    Can you imagine writing the real equipment book? With the constant upgrading of the system, that book would be multiple enormous volumes. Hope the Meyers have logged a lot of their research.

    No 18's here. Of course not needed.

    Back last year, Oro, you asked if I was running multiple subs. I am not. I have a 12" SVS Systems sub with built in Sledge D amp. It is like the rabbit, it is a thumper. Goes down to 13 or 15hz, so below the 20hz of human hearing. That is, if all memories about frequency response are still good. Starting to get the old enough to question my own thoughts at times.

    I am still hoping for the day when we can listen to WoS through a system that takes us to the "Fare the Well" P.A.. Would have to be software based, but I look at it like 4K upcoding an HDTV signal.

    Wow, FTW PA is now 7 years ago. Bet the Meyers' have gone way beyond that. I almost applied for a job at Meyer 7 years ago. Was in my career field. POTHead.

    That 2015 system had multiple flying 18's. It also had a load balancing system. This was done by having 2 systems, intake and outake. That is, they had 100 microphones throughout the stadium to push into the analytics software. Of course, the output systems was not connected except thru analytics, to the input system to avoid feedback. Brilliant. The analytic input system could then be used to balance the PA by section of the of the stadium.

    Sorry for interruption but I wanted find the article on pro sound web about 2015 FTW PA.

    I did actually find it, but not by searching pro sound web, but by searching internet at large and it found it on the pro sound web site, even though pro sound web could not find it in its own search.

    Gary, I think besides trying to keep up with Garcia, Phil was using that big system on stage to help fill in those near field areas (up front etc) we were discussing, the areas that didn’t get proper coverage from the PA?
    What some refer to as the Phil Zone, though to me that’s was where both his stage sound and the PA sound merged and acoustically coupled.
    But yeah, My spine tingles and can still feel rather than hear those sub frequencies in my DNA. (By sub I mean below the threshold of hearing, not a subwoofer). Those Meyers 18”s in the PA were ridiculous in the right spot, in the right venue etc.
    Plus, it’s the Grateful Fucking Dead so why not go big!

    PS, that Grateful Dead gear book is great, though a little dialed down.

    thanks for the write-up, input. Need a little time to read again and ponder. Think again we are speaking the same language but as 90% of communication is non verbal, some times the written language let's us down.

    It seems I have the dead's equipment book, need to track that down. Not necessarily for this discussion but just to find it again...

    Should have figured Phil would use Meyer systems. Using 18's onstage, wow!

    As of late 82 or early 83 Phil was using 4 Meyers cabinets: (4 -18”, 4 -15”), 2 per cabinet powered by custom PIE amps, until they started not using speakers on stage in 92. (Which I didn’t like).

    Not sure I get all what your saying? I agree that Soundboards do not sound natural for many reasons.
    Perhaps your referring to the phenomena of Microphones not having frequency response to accurately record bass waves combing sub sonic frequencies at those kind of SPL levels?
    Mic location can also make a big difference and was partly why Dan started the tapers section. Unless you have the right knowledge and equipment chances are a recording made too close will mot sound good.
    Plus you have the physics: the lower the frequency, the longer the sound wave. If your too close you’ll not hear the fully formed bass note etc.
    In fact if your too close much of the PA sound will blow right by you. You’ll also not properly experience stereo imaging. That’s why usually, the sound board or just before it was THE place to be. It was a trade off going up front: yeah you were up close and could see and hear their stage sound, but the PA mix was so above and beyond you that you missed a lot of info. Eventually they added little Meyers boxes, usually sitting on the front of the stage to add some vocals etc for those up close.
    Nothing comes for free! Personally, like Bear, I didn’t like the stereo set up because of this. Unless you were in the right spot, you missed a lot of info, especially if you were sitting on the side!
    This was the main reason Reserved seating sucked: nobody could sit where they wanted so if you were a sound nut like us, you often had to endure less than perfect sound/mixes.

    Fall Out from the Phil Zone

    I listened to 1988-10-15. Once Friday, Second Saturday. Two different sources although both said the Ultramatrix board, the first was much muddier than the second. Best highlight was the deep garbled voices toward the end of drums. Really bizarre, and reminds me of garbled voices during latter Star Wars during broken transmissions, and reminds me of the fellas ties to Lucas, the lightgiver.

    I was very disappointed in both versions as the show is missing a whole lot of data/music. What I mean by this is, I am wondering if there is fallout from the phil zone? I am positing that as the Phil Zone expanded, Healy lost control of the overall sound. If memory serves at some point it seems I remember maybe Phil using 18" woofers onstage. For sure he was using 15's (plus 12's and 10's). Now I loved my bit of time I spent in the Phil zone, but generally when I got up close, it was Jerry side. As Phil blasts his horn, this means Healy had to bring Phil down in the overall P.A. mix. In my humble opinion, I believe this led to the bad tape sound, lots of data/music missing. When I focus my ears, I can tell that much of the overall lower sound waves are missing or nonexistent. Even worse, the frequencies that are there are very muddled and indiscernible.

    Now as a way to test my theory, I listened to 1988-03-27, Hampton. Another group of shows I saw in 1988. I did see 8 Dead shows there and fully know the quality of the sound that can be obtained within the mothership. (Also saw the shows that make up "Hampton Comes Alive..") When I listened to March 27, the sound is very good. However, although not as bad a St.Pete, there is again a large amount of data/music missing as well. The imaging is excellent but that is because the imaging comes from the higher frequencies. Bass frequencies are much more omni- directional, whereas high frequencies are unidirectional. (Want to press on these concepts furthur, later on. I want to go back to some discussions back in October regarding HDCD.) If my hypothesis is correct, then the tape anomalies concerning extremely muddled low frequencies will test out thru other 1988 shows. Had not heard or noticed this until this past weekend. So for St. Pete, it not only causes Phil to be muddled (deep booming bass with no clarity to individual notes played), it also means some muddleness from other players/instruments. I believe this may be the reason why 1988 recordings may all need matrix recording.

    Just one man's opinion, would like to know what others thought.

    Both Hampton and St. Pete were excellent shows when you factor other aspects than just the quality of the reproduced sound on tape. One reason I love the later shows is because the P.A. quality produces a much more full bodied, across frequencies, sound than do earlier performances. Early performances are fire from perfomance, latter shows have more depth and clarity in the frequency spectrum, hence DaP#40.

    I was there.. It was so hot at the start of the show... Close to 100... Really enjoyed the long scarlet>fire popping up in the 4th slot.... Drove straight to Louisville after the show... why oh why.

    Knew we were getting close. Still love the Raven show. I am a huge '82 fan.

    This was the same time as my first drop, April 1982, what a life changing event, as I know 4/19 was for you.

    First 2 drops were Orange Sunshine and Purple Haze. Not too bad for first 2. Man, there is a lot to write about with those 2.

    4/19 - Why take one when two will do?

    I can't say no to that. A pivotal moment in the life of Jim.

    The drive home (including the arduous task of finding the car) was perhaps scarier than that moment when they derailed into discord and mayhem shortly after drums. The driver, the older brother of the friend I went with, was totally straight and a taper. The two of us had never seen the dead before and we both indulged - two each. Making it through space intact was the first challenge.. then we had to live through it again on the drive home. I was given very strict instructions which I followed as if my life depended on it, "He cannot know." So we hop in the car, he takes out his newly recorded master and fast forwards to that very moment it all began.

    "Quoth the Raven Nevermore. ....It was a dark and stormy night.... Wasn't it?" and the laughing and the sounds of nitrous.

    Listening to this again for the first time in a while, that laugh at the beginning of space that sounds remarkably like the laugh repeated over and over again on a loop cycle during the excellent Space from Dave's Picks 40, Deer Creek 6/18/90. It's the same laugh whether recreated or brought back to life from this recording? Not sure.

    Looking back on this 40 years later, I have to think maybe Larry wasn't as straight as he was purported to be. How could he not have known we were holding on for dear life on that fateful drive home? Perhaps he fast forwarded to that space because he knew and approved? A test? Questions that will likely remain unanswered.

    If you haven't heard this check it out, there's a brand spanking new Miller on the archive that reeks of an upgrade. On a similar note, Lemieux has been playing stuff from this tour this year. I recall him referring to it as "a most excellent tour", perhaps foreshadowing things to come?

    To me, the sound is better than some of the 82 that's found it's way to CD.. When the sweet chords of the Wheel finally broke through the madness that came before it.. I realized things were going to be ok after all. And they were. But the half hour before that and the half hour drive home took some time to make sense out of. Thankfully the Wheel and Stella Blue were there to provide support and ground us after our travels.

    I'd like to think we both passed the test. ahh.. well, onward.

    Edit: Two additional comments.. the discord probably started with Feel Like a Stranger, also that Brokedown Palace was sweet. 81 and 82 have some really nice versions of these songs, Jerry's voice was in good shape during this period. a real highlight.

    I can't honestly say I remember the Pigpen version - despite having the cd of 4/18/70. But that John Lee Hooker record is unforgettable. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds cut a thunderous record based on this theme, and with that title, in the mid 80's.

Great show, Lost Sailor-SOC, yes. Scarlet Fire, really good. Again these shows have a different vibe. Give me some more 1979-80.

Otis, yes, I think we have moved to unofficial releases in the mix. We should be able to get a good mix of both official and unofficial.

For me personally, if the sound quality is not great, I will just pass. I spent way too much time in 1980s listening to marginal cassettes to not enjoy the treasures Dick, Dave and Co have blessed us with in the last 20 plus years.

I am late watching this tonight, but holy shit this is good. We get a Half Step, on of my favorites Wang Dang Doodle, Queen Jane, Bird Song. Sounds really good in my system. Love Phil's turtle neck sweater looks sweet. Jerry is looking and playing really well. Maybe 91 is underated?

We definitely still need some Shoreline shows released.

Some good listening this week.

Thanks for checking out the 6/12/80 upgrade with me yesterday.
I'd only previewed it but that was the first time I had a chance to really listen to it and it's a big improvement over the skeevy out of phase SBD that circulated previously until this month.
Nice way to celebrate that shows 30th anniversary with a newly restored recording. (Thanks Charlie!)

Last night's Shakedown Stream was fun. Haven't paid much attention to that show and video hasn't been released so it was almost like seeing / hearing it for the first time and I dug it. Especially liked that Bird Song, OMSN S2 opener (I knew you'd be stoked VGUY) and the PITB > UJB.

You can definitely hear how much Bruce drove the band in that period, but you could see it too last night.
And yes Spring - Summer '91 has some hidden gems in there for sure.
It's fun digging through that stuff to find them, cause they're quite surprising and refreshing and make you want to hunt for more:)

Dug 5/28/77 To Terrapin relisten.. but was still coming down from 10/12/68 and was a bit distracted, I'm not sure why I've never given that release as much attention as it deserves, great show, great artwork, PITB, May '77.. and yet I forget about it. Thanks for the reminder, it's a cool release.

And I dug going back to Shoreline '90 this week too.. Summer '90, that was fun!

Some how this morning I stumbled into Summer '93.. 6/6/93 to be exact. It's pretty fun so far.
BTW speaking of digging for treasure. There's a cool pocket of surprisingly good shows from December '92 - June '93.

It's not Plinky Keys but it's the GOGD and it's fun.
(What do you call Vince's keyboard sound btw, Clown Town?)

Yes, Jim we have a leadership vacuum. Like a herd of cats. Dave's 8 sounds great and so do the Giants box shows, maybe 91 would be good after last nights Shakedown. I wonder why the Charlotte 12/10/73(DL8) show never gets any love. Anyone have any thoughts on this show? I don't remember any discussions of this show ever. It looks great on paper: fall 73, in between the celebrated Cleveland and Tampa shows, a charming southern city. Why no love?

In regards to what is mentioned here, I like the sound of 12/10/73 as like stated, that is overlooked for sure, I had to go look and see. Let's do it!

1980-11-30 - DaP V8 was picked way back in April 19th 2020 based on my notes, and '73 is good for Home Repairs :)

Thanks for the notes, GOGD. They fill in some crucial gaps. I wondered what the heck was the deal with the Peggy-O. Now it makes sense, it was a first performance. Then Weir interrupts with " have a safe and sane 4th". There must have been some real fireworks for Bobby to interrupt like that. An excellent Deal, with Keith's piano the highlight for me.
The PITB sounded a bit tentative to me on a first listen, like everyone was waiting for something to happen. But Garcia's shimmering liquid tone is in fine 1973 form. I liked it better on a second listening. Keith switches to electric near the end and Phil gets more aggressive. I'll need to spend some more time with this one!

Yes, it's a fine lil show. I guess its fair to say it doesn't quite reach the heights of our favorite 73 shows. I think the PITB is essential, but then I think that of every 73 PITB I've ever heard. It's nice to listen to an earthbound 73 show occasionally. I think it gives some context for the stratospheric shows.

Anyhow, there it is, btw the Audience of 6/14/68 at Fillmore West is really quite cool and pretty damn good for '68 (meaning rough, but if you're a head you can do it)... Early St. Stephen (Actually The Eleven > St. Stephen!), Alligator > Lovelight > Caution... Far out. Summer '68 is very underrepresented.. no tapes, but an intrepid traveler managed to tape this one :)

Great Pick yesterday Gollum, I gave it the once over twice and really enjoyed it!

It was a good time, sitting on the deck, quaffing Oberons.....
Had several, now don’t really remember that much about the show except that I liked the PITB and wondered if it would be possible to clean up this show with a Plangent remaster.
Put that on the to do list for after remaining unreleased quality reels get the Plangent/Norman treatment.

Going to do more sitting in the deck today and roast some coffee beans.

Susana states -
The reporter next to me (clearly not a DeadHead) questioned them as to whether they were on drugs, and they ignored his repeating this question twice but when he got really loud the third time, they all stared directly at him, faces stone cold but on the verge of cracking up!

I've been looking for a good quality video of the Press conference, I've got some skeevy excerpts.

WILFREDTJONES - There's a Matrix, but the audience recording of Cumberland is missing the first 4 minutes or so, so not sure it would fix your ills.

Yeah, going to try and do Shoreline 90, and Greek 85...but damn the Scooby Doo house is perhaps my favorite Dave’s so...Doooaahh! I have so much “grown up” shit I need to do, including phone calls, but I’ll try and at least throw em on while I’m working...I’ll prolly give one the full treatment, the question is which one!

EDIT: dug 6/14/85 yesterday. Don’t think I’ve ever heard the first set, I’ve had the second set probably since 85 or 86, another gem picked up from ole Fred and Barry out at Sundance books back in downtown metropolitan Geneseo NY. Buzzo’s Music store used to be next door. Buzzo was a real character, his commercials were like “Buzzo, Buzzo, Buzzo”, and he had the best prices on JBL E 120 guitar speakers (what Jerry used).
Don’t think Buzzo is still there but I believe Sundance is....man that’s going back a ways in the ole memory bank, good times. Used to spark one up and take the leisurely country drive with ole Chuck to get fresh tapes from Sundance, kinda like Christmas!

This must sound fucking boring by now. If you look at the Waterbury concert page from a few years ago I wrote about being there those two nights, let me reiterate . I had been living in western Oregon after high school graduation that summer. My amazing mom died a few days before the Waterbury shows from cancer. Had to winter in Ct. to help my grieving WW-2 vet father (mess Sargent in Patton’s army). Very difficult time for me being only 18.
First day of Waterbury I rode up with friends Don H and Tom B. Went to a rodeo the afternoon before the concert that night. A rodeo in Connecticut of all places. A couple hours before the show I knocked on the back stage door and talked with Joe Winslow , told him I’d been living in Oregon and he let me in. I’m sitting in the empty theater when Ron Rakow looks at me and says to Winslow “who the fuck is this?”. And Joe Winslow tells him “back off! He’s a good guy”. Joe being one of the Pendleton boys looked out for me. I guess he appreciated me having been in Oregon for a few weeks. On a side bar Ken Kesey once talked about all the Grateful Dead roadies who were natives of Pendleton and joked about writing a book about them called “Place of Dead Roadies”, a spoof on the William Burroughs book “Place of Dead Roads”. The second night I showed up soon before they opened the doors and my friends Greg and the Weibel sisters who had been sitting in line for several hours let me cut in with them. In my post from several years ago I had the opening song listed wrong, but it was the only Dead show I ever attended when the Dead were on the stage playing as people first started streaming in, running to find good seats. Schwing (real name) and Bolton were also there. I went home after with my first love Cricket. Fast forward to early April 73 when I made it back to the promised land and then returned to Oregon. “We come with the dust and go with the wind”.
Now how do I collect 13 years of my posts off this site to put under one cover.

One last note. Dave Chapelle 8:46 on YouTube has gotten 17 million views in three days since he posted it. Extremely powerful!
Will make grown man cry.

Maybe best of the Cali June 90 so far? Seemed a little more energized than Cal Expo? Remember nothing of this one, but not sure why (yeah right!) as it’s a good one. Good H-S-F opener, Desolation Row, rest of the usual suspects all good...
2nd: nice Scarlet/Fire, Blow Away ok, but perhaps like Hornsby was saying last Friday about his and other songs, sometimes, eventually, the band was starting to be a tad over this one? Same with 7/16/90, it’s ok, but this song definitely seemed to peak in 89, imho...same with this Women Are, good, but not quite up with the 89s?, did dig the weird jam though. Didn’t get to engage in the rest as much, had it cranked doing housework... but don’t recall anything notable, either pro/con, just another solid, enjoyable 90 show! Lol, makes that sound like a bad thing! Words...we should be able to communicate without them!
Ok, on to 6/15/85, not sure I’ll get to Scooby Doo house today, but I listen to that one often so no biggie.

Tomorrow 6/16/85, and video of 6/16/90 tomorrow night in the theatre...in case anyone’s interested..

Always been fascinated with the Oregon Dead connection and the impact Kesey and fam had on the 60s, San Francisco, and Oregon. Pretty wild stuff. That guy having so much impact on our world.

It was cool to watch Sunshine Days again, it'd been awhile.

And speaking of impact, 8:46 is definitely a heavy trip. Powerful stuff for sure.

The last notes of JBG from the ole Scooby Doo house just faded out. That show is sick! One of the better DaPs?

So you helped me decide what up next. Best of Cali June '90 so far.. I like the sound of that.
The bands tuning up as we speak, write, whatever you call this.
You probably called this based on the tuning.. sounds like some excited fans know what to expect.

Yeah, looking forward to 6/16/85 fo SURE... first Cryptical since 9/23/72 Waterbury CT.

Almost five years since this was released.
Love the Cumberland opener, then into HCS. Really good. Another wonderful sixteen song first set. Really like this Half Step, Jerry's guitar sounds so pure. WRS prelude into Dark Star, Eyes than Playing! Love this show and you were there Strider, wow, really cool.

We should have Dave's 35 announced in roughly a month. Can't wait. No clue what it will be but I have my money on an eighties release.

As I have been acquiring releases in bunches, two of my recent additions are DP 32 (8/7/82) and DP 21 (11/1/85). I haven't been able to give them a proper listen until recently ( a rare benefit of the the COVID-19 lock down). I have to say I liked them both on the first go around. I knew DP 32 was wrought with sound/mixing issues but overall it was a good show. As for 11/1/85, I dug it and I am finding that I am really liking the 85 shows. In comparison to my usual listening of 69-77 or 89-91 eras, they are good shows, different, but still good. I need to check out the Riverbend 6/24/85 show from 30 Trips. I have heard good reviews on that and it also has a Cryptical.

GRATEFULHAN - There's definitely some good stuff in the early 80s.

And FWIW, Summer '85 is a blast.

The 6/24/85 Riverbend release has always been a favorite, but don't stop there.
6/25 Blossom, 6/27 SPAC, 6/28 Hershey Park, 6/30 & 7/1 Merriweather. A highly recommended tour and a really fun run of tapes.

And speaking of, today is the anniversary of 6/16/85 and the brief return of Cryptical Envelopment.

Highly recommended because it's fun!

OROBOROUS - Dude, dug 6/15/90. Especially that interesting jam after He's Gone into Drums. Fast paced Scarlet > Fire and the opening HSF were tops. Good times!!

Alright, started up the 6/16/85 show and Bob's talkin' Walkin' Blues and it sounds fresh.. because it is in '85.

Gratefulhan: what GOGD said! And don’t forget 7/13/85, at least the first set. The band, the hills around them, everything’s on FIRE! If nothing else, be sure to check out 6/27,28,30, but the whole tour is good. Summer 85 is like this nice little oasis between the eras you mention. I’m extremely biased because it was probably my most fun year, but I love the music too, worts and all. There’s something dangerous and exciting. They often really go for it and at times your sure their going to jump the track, but they usually pull it off. I guess it’s they A++ for effort versus safe but perfect execution?

Ok, have to finish 6/15/85, then the mighty 6/16/85, and later, I’m going fire up the 6/16/90 DVD tonight on the big screen.

I know that it has been mentioned numerous times in the past, but it is WAY past due for TPTB to collect these Greek shows, shine em' up, and give us a Greek Box, a la The Giants Box. Looking at their history, they could go in a number of ways. I would like to see maybe 2 boxes, Greek 1: 1981-1985, and Greek 2: 1986-1989. Choose the BEST overall show from each year, 4 shows per box.

Or, make it a bigger box with all 8? I don't know, but I do know that I want it. Or hell, it looks like they played the Greek 27 times...

This 85 show is slaying me right now, and I'm only 4 songs into the 1st set! I'm glad Brent eventually got invited to the party 1/2 through "Walkin's Blues" :) Another hot pick!

OTIS - Glad you're peaking at the Greek with us.

So upon revisiting these old favorites from Berkeley June '85 I've decided the following:
Are they the hottest thing ever? No.
Does Jerry's voice sound pretty shot? Yes.
Is it the bands 20th Anniversary and despite adversity and multiple challenges do the band rise to meet the occasion? Yes.
Do they break out Cryptical Envelopment after 13 years of not playing it on the last night of the run? Yes, yes they do.
Are these 3 shows enjoyable? Definitely.

Finishing up Night 2 now.. wasn't able to get to it on it's anniversary. And really all 3 nights are cool.

I'd be slightly disappointed if they chose to release one of these and not the other 2.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the tapes we have are from the Cassette Master which, as far as we know, is what's in the Vault.

So the big question, as I see it, would be how much would the plangent process increase the quality?
And I'd be happy to find out the answer to that question.

I'm not holding my breath. So in the meantime, I say, dust off or grab these 3 SBDs from your nearest Charlie Miller source and open up a copy of the Taper's Compendium V2 and enjoy a little bootleg box set glory!

Ain't no time to wait...

6/15&16/85: finished it up 15th this AM. Have had this full show, but only second set of first night, and have never heard the 16th until today! Some what mixed bag like much of 85. “85 is like a box of chocolates, most good, some you get that one ingredient you don’t like, and a few are dosed”) 😎
Though the first and last nights prolly look more sexy on paper: Keep on Growing, last Stagger Lee 82, last Comes a time 80, Set opening Dew, and the Cryptical etc., I think maybe the second night is the best played overall? And we get a FOTD, scorching Might as Well, and of course yet another sweet She Belongs to Me. I’d definitely say it’s between the first 2, as the last night seems less tight? JG definitely having some issues from like Cryptical on..
Yes it’s cool as hell to hear it, (though I want to find a Aud version to hear the crowd go nuts, they sure did in Meriwether!) But Jer does not sound very confident so it’s not all it could be. After something going on? Brokedown ends it on a good note at least.
Yeah, this 16th is a classic 85 roller coaster. Wharf Rat a good example: Jer’s stumbling, but Brents organ and some of Bob and Brents harmonies are amazing. Yeah, shits all over the place sometimes lol.
Never made it to the Greek, but from all accounts and documentation I imagine it was top shelve, so seeing a weekend of these shows at that venue....I can barely imagine. Well it sure was fun. Haven’t really checked these out in a while (or at all), but my recollection is the heart of the summer tour is more so where the meat and potatoes are? Hope to confirm that as I’m going to try and do this tour starting next weekend. I mean what the hell, it’s the 35 anniversary of probably my favorite?, craziest (definitely), most fun (probably), tour!
Tonight Vault View 3 I believe it is, from 6/16/90. Hit the last Shoreline 90 mañana, then need some 70s in between, perhaps revisit the 76 box fir a good deep brain scrub, then everybody into the pwuel, cause summer 85 is back and the time is right for dancin in the streets....unless perhaps your African American cause they’ll look ya up for that shit in some places! Harumph!

EDIT: always glad to have brother Otis along for the ride! The more the merrier eh!
