Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? I'm in. Snow day here but nothing like the front range. Got our biggie last week. I-70 closed and the Denver skiers asked the state patrol how can we get there from here and they simply said you can't. Always a better ski day after the storm anyway, lol.
    Cheers

Edit: Fired up the Minglewood opener loud. Jerry's tone and first solo tells me this is going to be a good one. "Some things you just know." Dick's 28-36 is just a hot run. I'm drawn to those frequently.

    Thanks man.

So, we are getting close to mid March and we haven't had a box set announcement. Looks like we will not have a Spring Box. They might be setting us up for a fall release to coinside with that fall 74 run. We will see.

In the meantime, cuing up 11/5/77, Dicks #34.

Pittsburgh 4/3 was the first time I had to call in “sick” from the hotel pay phone.
Trick was to find out how much the call cost (remember no cells so people still used pay phones, and have proper coinage before so call could go through and they’d not know it was LD , AND, no one was dumb enough to call from the room lol
“Hello, Louie, I’m afraid I’m not feeling so well…” while tripping freaks are laughing and yelling in the background lol. Yeah, I may be dumb but I’m not stupid ; )
And because I’d just started that new job and actually liked it, had to blow off the excellent Ann Arbor shows, had tix and a ride with BOO469 and everything, sigh…
4/8: went with a gal who was just a friend, but we probably should have been more, and not sure how after this show we weren’t lol. Between the song list and the X we probably were hugging the whole damn show lol
Yeah, wasn’t playing on tripping as I had to drive back that night (more on that later). But long short some guy came by in the lot and figured, hell we’ll just split a quarter 2.5 ways and be fine. I feel bad cause I kinda messed with the guy about if it was good etc. We’d just spent much of fall 88 going down that road a lot so felt pretty confident about our experience, but boy, oo-eee that was some good sheet. Id never before or since had X that strong, holy crap lol. And the poor gal with me had never done it!
So as you know, that comes on very fast comparatively, so we dropped right before going in and man before we were even out the lot shit hit us like a freight train. I remember she started getting the fear as we approached the one busy street we had to cross then up the steps and in, but she was having a hard time.
It was all gloomy and noises and I think steam coming outta the manholes lol, like instantly being plunged into a scary movie! But being a pro, I knew it’s get better after that first big rush and knew set and setting if we could just get inside all would be well with the world!
So after careful tender sharing of this key data, we finally got the nerve to go, once inside we were so high we just walked right in the back abd stayed there the whole night. Thank goodness the ushers didn’t kick us out lol.
But once inside, we immediately could feel the love and as I say, I think we swayed and hugged and danced the night away in a awesome blissful state.
Probably why I didn’t “know” this show better lol.
But the story doesn’t end there. Even after, another anomaly, we were still too damn high and there was no way I was going to make back to WNY from Cincinnati that way, so don’t recall who/how etc, but somehow we ended up across the river flopping in somebodies? hotel room on the floor with only just enough floor space for us to curl up and crackle a few hours before leaving.
Now the part all these years later that frosts my ass, is that we didn’t go to Louisville.
Not sure if she had to be back, but I had that relatively new job so I had to be back Monday after calling in previous week from Pittsburgh. But 4/9 was a Sunday, and back then my CC Cassady skills were epic, so if we’d have gone and not tripped etc, it would have been tough, but I’d done it before: (drive all night after a show and go to work next morning.)
Probably paranoid of crossing the mason-hippie line lol
But whatever, as it’s all so long ago, yeah, that’s one I wish I could redo.
Thank goodness for the archive though so we can relive all these wonderful shows, joyful ecstatic moments and some of the fear and danger too, now comfortably and safely from our homes! We are pretty fortunate in so many ways!

Come on it’s time to go

1/17 and 2/21 we’ve done, former good, latter excellent!

But amazingly I don’t think I’ve hit all of the January Avalon run, so that’s where I’ll start. Then 2/7 and 2/15, maybe I’ll rehit 2/11…anything else we haven’t done in March that’s worthy?
Would like to hit the Ark shows as I’m not sure I’ve heard all and think they should be done all at same time. I’d like to try to get up to RT 4.1 for this trip, then I’ll probably go back to 79 and/or 84? But I marked down 6/27&28 and 10/31/69 and will hit those later in the year when I need a 69 cleanse again lol

Ha, my only purpose in life now seems to be to battle poor health, and try to listen to every Dead show I reasonably can….well, at least I’m kicking ass at one of em ; )

DV: rut roah, seems there’s been some real bad flu this year.
    Hope y’all feel better soon!
And big kudos to the Edina boys on the big state championship!

I mostly went with the Ultramatrixs to keep things consistent.
I found them mostly good, but no idea of what’s available overall?
Yep, we were at the Pittsburg shows (DL 9).
The first is sorta anaemic, but the second night (3rd) was good.
Still wonder if another right city, street, but wrong house?
As good as the third is, I still think others might be as good or better, especially 4/5! Really, there’s no dog in the bunch and several could be considered a top pick depending on who’s picking ; ) Hopefully interested folks can find a show or two here to dig!

    Ok, January Avalon

Hell of a post on spring 89. Recordings available are hit and miss and don't match the multi tracks from summer through fall 89. Still some great shows there and would love to see them put one out for official release. I believe the one and only release was from the download series #9 from the Igloo (18 years ago).

I see this show has been suggested a few times. I'll be interested in y'all's comments if you ever get around to it. I've never quite understood the love for this show. I know I must be missing something. I know it was one of Latvala's very favorite shows. But there's just the one big jam, the 20 min NFA. That jam never seemed to me very psychedelic, by the Dead's standards. I've never even heard or read much praise for this jam, in particular. The rest of the show has great high energy performances, but nothing unusual for 1977. Is it just the ambiance of an outdoor 1977 show? (the only outdoor 77 show?) The ambiance of a huge crowd? I know I must just be missing something. I certainly have learned to always trust Latvala!!

What does it for me is the uniqueness of a few songs. The Mississippi Half Step and He's Gone is like no other for 77....... Also a very strong Estimated>Eyes sequence... bob t

I would add.. in general it's a very well played show at a mammoth outdoor concert in the greater NY area.. it took place over Labor Day weekend and in excess of 125,000 people attended. Look how fast the Giants Stadium box sold out.. NY fans are a rabid bunch.

I don't know Gollum, but all this talk about Englishtown... makes me curious to give it a re-listen.
What was the consensus on that, wait till later in the summer? Something like that, I believe.

4/21/84.. I agree JIMINMD, that Slipknot! cooks for sure. I dig that Set 2, some good stuff happening there, and that stoked up some excitement for DaP V35 for me. Personally, I've always been real fond of '84 and I dig the cover too.
Pre-order is 7/17, when do they usually ship, I can't remember? I guess I could look...

Alright, what should we listen to today?

BTW I'd be down to re-listen to 9/20/70 this week, but maybe over the weekend when everyone can give it some proper attention, just putting it out there again ;)

Jim in Midi ;)

Yeah man, I'll follow your foolish heart off the path to Shoreline 5/10/91 (puns all intended, 2nd cup of coffee over here).

Looks fun, and for the record we've only had 1 yes count it 1 pick from '91 in the close to 4 months we've been doing this and that was 9/10/91 on 4/23/20. However, the bro / sis of this show 5/11/91 was watched by many on Shakedown Stream about a month ago.

Alright, there's your fun facts for the day ladies & germs.

Let's do this, thanks Jim!

Sorry fellow pickers, been hanging out in the front too much....(seems like all I do is piss people off?)....needed to take a step back and smoke some fatties and mellow back in the last row for a while. Unlike y’all I need to take a time out from all dead, all the time, every now again, from time to time. Yes, blasphemy I know....it’s just when it starts felling like work......and having to occasionally go to work doesn’t help.
Fortunately I’m only working in unoccupied mansions that nobodies been in. Still a worry as your never sure if/when maintenance/staff people have been in. But compared to most I cannot complain.

I did throw on 4/21/84 yesterday, though only background listening on the iPad...but it did seem like a good show. I have a tape of second set but don’t recall anything about it so guessing I didn’t listen to it much? Prolly didn’t sound good, I’ll have to dig it out just for shits and giggles? Of course having my “favorite” ending combo probably had something to do with that also? 😉 Sorry, that probably offends someone so I’ll apologize now.

So I’ll try and throw on 5/10/91 under similar circumstances today, but at least I’ll get an introduction to it....

INGRISHTOWN: I believe WTJ, Deadvikes? someone wanted to wait on that until end of summer?
I’m with Gollum, it’s a great show but not a top 77 show personally, and of course 77 isn’t a go to year for moi...ooops, sorry, probably offended someone else now too...ok, need another fatty...dammit Pedro. shut up and get back to the last row where you belong, lol

I always will give a show a shot, because you never know. Thanks GOGD. 84 is not a go to year for me. It will be interesting how Dave's 35 will compare to this show.
Jim, I listen to the unofficial releases through Relisten (thanks to Oroborous!). It doesn't tell me the exact source, but it was the first SBD FLAC option listed, so it probably was the Miller.

Englishtown is another epic show, their first show back since Mickey's accident in June. Just think if they kept playing that summer? They were hot.

First Truckin since their return in 1976. Terrapin encore, come on! Gollum, time for another listen.

I might listen to this one again soon, just talking about it makes me want to.

I am in for a 91 show. Thanks gents.

Which I believe if you choose a version, and then go to the bottom of the song list page, it shows the archive number...I know it’s in there someplace it’s just harder to find?

EDIT: yep, just checked, on bottom of song page it says “view at archive.org” and lists there which version.

I’ve never said I’m not a fan, it’s just not a top year for me is all, personally I love all the years combined, and I’ll give any show a try, especially the weird ones! Lol I will concur that 77 is perhaps the best overall consistently good, night after night, year in the catalog, it’s just personally not a favorite...just not weird enough..and only clarifying because I don’t want to offend anyone.

Hi Ya!

Good to see ya all over here today..

Digging the comments, keep 'em comin'... that's some funny shit.

This show has some spark in it's step so far.

Bruce gets Jerry inspired.

'77 is not really a go to year for me either... not knockin' it, just saying.

I'll come clean, I've always puzzled over Cornell. I mean back in the day, we played that tape non-stop because it's good.
But most of all, it sounded great (all be it fast / my tape needed some serious pitch correction) and we didn't have a whole lot of Great sounding tapes.

But now with all the other stuff.. is it the greatest thing ever? A subject for endless debate.

No Dark Star, PITB, Bird Song, I'd pick 9/21/72 over it, just as a quick example.
(Man really love that show especially after the recent relisten.)

Again, not knockin' but since OB is feeling feisty I figured I'd stir the pot, or is it smoke the pot?

Be Well, fun to hear you all!

I'm with Oroborous on '77. Early on I settled into 77 and 74 and my comfort food go to years, but I listened to so much '77, mainly because there is/was so much of it, that I guess I built up a tolerance or something, it takes more '77 to get me off (which by the way is exactly was the Swing did.. that one was extra potency, Grade A ).

I do really, really like 1977 and respect it for what it is. Like dating a supermodel.. after a couple years the 68 and 74 flawed but fun hippie chicks get you in their gravitational pull.

Thanks for the pick Jim. Sound quality is really good so far. Just started and we get a Maggie's Farm!

Okay, remind me later not to pick any 77 for you guys.

You guys can pick 1977 any time you want.. it is a truly monumental year. My advise to you is don't listen to a word I say.. :D

If we do go down the 77 path.. Baltimore is the abandoned stepchild. Sort of the Cinderella story of Spring '77.

As for 9/2/80, killer Oroborous. Were at Richmond 85 too? I think yes.. which makes that release (DiP 21) a twofer for you. Outstanding. We should do or both of those shows at some point. Being at Richmond myself.. I like the other show just as much... outstanding news.

Speaking of twofers, well.. this one is a threefer. I was doing my morning bike ride relistening to Jai Alai and just as Weather Report Suite drifted into Let It Grow, I caught this mother and two cubs sitting under a shade tree on a farm in the middle of the ride. ..about 20 yards away. Very cool.. bears are here but they sleep a lot during the day and you really don't see them all that much. It was very cool, but about scairt me right off my bicycle. Perhaps I should have shared this on the Dave's Picks thread.

Don't forget The Palladium show from 4/30/77, which is also from the Download Series #1. Melt your face Half Step, Peggy O, etc. etc. Yes, high quality from start to finish.

I think Half Step peaked in 77. Oh crap, did I say that out loud?

Loving the 91 show from today's pick. Thanks Jim. Sound quality and performance are both great. Need to finish it up tomorrow morning. I think I have said it before but for me 1991 has surprised me on how good some of these shows were. Seems like they were better than fall 1990 after they returned after Brent.

Be well folks.

Agree on the Palladium shows, you'd have to think they will come out as a box set at some point. Also the Capitol Theatre shows were recorded on black and white video.. considering what they are, it'd be great if they made those available when the remaining shows are released.

What's in store for today? Was there a suggestion nested a few comments back in this thread?

I think we should conspire together and up the ante to three shows a day and see the reaction on DeadheadBrewer. Will it drive him over the edge and put him in the white room?

Got Any '77 you wanna listen too OB? ;)

All that '77 talk yesterday.. might have to look at one of them there and see.

We have already listened to the following:
5/08/77
5/11/77
5/13/77
5/19/77
5/28/77
6/04/77
6/09/77

So other than the legendary April - May time frame there's still lots to choose from, you got Feb, June, Oct, Nov, Dec.
All kinds of stuff!

Who's got a pick, I'm eyeballing a number of Dave's & Dick's in '77 I haven't listened to in a while.

Great Pick yesterday Jim!

In the meantime I'ma gonna go check out these Bear Drops :)

EDIT: Or like WTJ says Spring Summer '89.. so much to choose from!

Sound we do the next night 5/11/91??
Or wait a 77 pick? What?

Quick question on these recordings from the Archive. When the source states recorded by Healy and Pearson. Does that mean these are their actual tapes of the shows? Since they were both employed by the Dead, does that mean these are the official versions?

Let's do a different show instead of 5/11/91 since that was the Shakedown Stream about a month ago.. just saying.

As far as the Healy / Pearson Tapes on Archive. Based on the source info these are Transfers from Pearson's Cassette Master of the show. And real sweet transfers with good equipment. What circulates all appear to be UltraMatrix'd with ambience, cause that's what they were doing then. So.. these Pearson tapes are pretty much as good as you can get, without you know "plangent process" it or "Normanizing" it ala whatever far out processes they do, which costs a bunch of cash. You gotta pay Jefferey for all those hours put in, etc... That's a big process and expensive. Bottom line, these "tapes" you mention are amazing.

Now the question is.. are there multi-track of these same shows in the Vault?
Answer appears to be in some cases yes. I was surprised the other day reading an article Blair Jackson did with Phil in 1990 when he was working on Without A Net and he said in that interview that they had Multi-Track as far back through 1987. If that's correct, which is not confirmed in anyway I can tell, then it's possible there's Multi-Track of some of the earlier shows that year, ie Spring Tour, which would be GREAT!

The UltraMatrix from that tour have too much ambience mixed in and are more like good audience tapes. But I know that there's a clean SBD of Hartford '87, DL's first show, cause he played it on the Taper's Section and it's a different source than the UltraMatrix sources that are floating around.

Alright, just had to geek out a bit as this fascinates me and always has.

BTW Let It Grow from 10/11/77 is shredding!

Thanks for the info on these shows GOGD. Fascinating to me anyway and the shows on the archive are definitely hit or miss and I really keep an eye out for Healy and Pearson.

Make the call for today. Thanks Man.

As for a show today, I was hoping one of those ‘77 gurus would make a suggestion.

Maybe the hacked up RT V1 N2 10/14/77?
PITB > Brokedown > PITB is calling me.

Whole show or the whole Compilation release. Either way.

But if there’s a better pick, I’m hip.

Was hauling ass down the mountain from Bachelor Gultch ala Henry, and luckily put my brakes on for that corner if you please right before the Ritz, when out jumped a huge Bull Moose! I’m not sure who was more freaked out? So seeing as I’m driving one of those dinky company transit vans (ours have polka dots, don’t ask....) so they look like a clown car or ice cream truck. (Children have run out with a dollar mistakenly) So of course the larger vehicle rule applied (hey, it was a big Moose) and so I hit the brakes and gave em some space, and luckily once he gathered his thoughts, he bolted, which was nice, because if he thought I was a threat he could have stomped and crushed my little van like a beer can!
Funny part was I had on its all over now baby blue from 5/10/91 again since I left before we picked today and I have no net where I’m working. Funny because a few seconds earlier and it might of been all over! Lol
But what a great show, we should definitely do 5/12 one of these days since I believe GOGD or ? said the shows got better every night of that run, which considering how good the first 2 are is enticing...
But hopefully tomorrow we can get a pick before I have to leave at 8:30 MST so I can download from Relisten and hang with the cool kids? I’m down for whatever: 91, 77, 81, some more 84.....it’s all good!
Let me know...till next time,
Buenos nachos mi amigos!
