Marleyman in Canada...

I still haven't received mine. According to UPS tracking, it was handed off to Canada Post on May 10th. I contacted UPS to see if they had new tracking info for Canada Post, but they didn't - told me to contact the shipper. So it looks like things are just moving slowly (I'm guessing in part because of border restrictions).

I keep lurking here to see what people are saying about non-USA deliveries. No need to panic, yet.

Alligator 1985

I imagine, Garcia probably felt without Pig Pen doing Alligator or Easy Wind for that matter, that those tunes just wouldn't make it. Those were Pig Pen tunes all the way, and he was the guy that really made them work.

Canada Delivery?

Has anyone here received this in Canada yet? I got an email a month ago saying it had shipped. It usually takes 2 weeks but because of COVID-19 I have been extra patient. I have heard some things about USPS and Canada Post being super slow.

I just want to make sure I didn't have an issue receiving this before I contact asking where my package is. Thanks for any information!

Jerry should have had more faith! They could have done it and it would have been really great! I can hear the 1985 GD playing it in my mind's ear. They had the right sound to do it I think. Just imagine Alligator>Cryptical>Other One at the Greek in June! What could have been! :-)

Pensive Memorial Day, all . . .

Garrison, it looks like Jim has your back, but I can always help with many of the Live Phish. PM me . . .

A few years back I took out my original-run Live Phish and sure enough, the discs had melted away. But it was not disc rot; the plastic photo-album-style CD pocket holders had some chemical in them that ate the disc material. I tried Phish and the manufacturer to no avail. No one would help, even though it's well-documented online that the first year of Live Phish had the problem. Phish quit putting the series in those sleeves after a year or so. All I asked for was some FLAC files (no dice), since it's likely that they have no more physical product of those CDs, but I ended up finding Phish fans who allowed me to rip copies of their Live Phish discs that they had purchased after the switch. One phan phound out that his discs had melted away when he went to pull his out to loan me. Doh.

I've not seen evidence of disc rot after 30+ years and 3000+ CDs, but who knows?

Ryan, I'll definitely check out that Lee Morgan documentary, thanks! I'll watch it with my trumpeter son.

Just received a remastered Hunky Dory in the mail Saturday to replace my 1999 mastering, which replaced the 1989 mastering, so I will admit that I chase remasterings all the time. The CDs from 1987-1994 or so were rushed out, and the music companies usually did not take time to find the masters for the CD pressings. And few realized at the time that the CD was not just a smaller version of an LP or a round cassette; the companies prepared the first CDs as if the discs had no differences than previous media in terms of pros/cons.

Then after a decade of discs, some companies re-did the releases with the best tapes and an idea of what the CD was capable of. But during that time (let's say 1996-2004) there were also folks trying to overly-compress the music (the "Loudness Wars"), so some of those first remasterings had better sound before the compression, but lousy sound on the CDs. (and some of the packaging of the remasters was not great)

So this past decade or so has seen people going back to the original tapes and to the good, 2000-era remastered tapes, but using the latest technology, leaving some breathing room on the discs, and also spiffing up the packaging, which to me creates a raft of second- and third-time around releases which really hit the spot. To my ears, the 1999 Bowie remasters are easily bettered by the more recent remasterings, but your mileage may vary. And as I mentioned a few days back, the newest stereo Beatles remasters really are ear-opening. (the Mono box, it goes without saying, is pure delight)

...Speaking about 1985 Grateful Dead, How about
Dick's Picks Volume 21! A grateful live album in the Dick's Picks series, it contains the complete concert that was recorded on November 1, 1985, at Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. It also includes several bonus tracks recorded on September 2, 1980, at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, New York. Also, for collectors, the Pluss with Dick's Picks Volume 21 is that it features rare live recordings of "Spoonful", "Gimme Some Lovin'", "She Belongs to Me", "Gloria" and "Keep Your Day Job".
Each volume of Dick's Picks has its own "caveat emptor" label, advising the listener of the sound quality of the recording. The one for Volume 21 reads:

"DP 21 was mastered from the original digital tapes, our earliest foray into the digital domain to date. The master tapes are Beta PCM cassettes, with stereo digital audio recorded on the video track. We've aimed to make this release sound as good as possible, and we feel we've succeeded. ... I remember when I first heard the release , I became very interested in the Dead’s playing in 1985, in my opinion, it’s almost to me , a feeling of a rebirth in the dead’s quality playing; Primo! In its own sort of way in the dicks picks series. This was actually one of my least playing releases but it started to grow on me. It brought back a lot of fond & beautiful memories of my touring years with the dead & the whole community that followed the dead from show to show as well I was grateful enough to meet many beautiful people in the 80’s & 90’s touring community!
Man, now looking back on 1985, I think it’s about time we get another 1985 performance that is Norman treated! Any other fans of 1985 Dead?

. To find HQ releases of this era of the Grateful Dead 1983-1986 have been very hard to find. There aren't a lot of HQ copies of show in the GD Vault from this ERA. I love this era with Brent on Key's. There is so much released from the 70's but very few from this era. The quality is excellent and the energy between the crowd and the band is epic!.Would love to see more release from this era hoping Dave can find some HQ Recordings of this era!!

Alligator 1985

Bringing back Alligator in 1985 would have been very cool. They brought back Big Boy Pete once. I read an interview were Blair Jackson asked Garcia if they could bring back Alligator and he basically said I don't believe we could ever do that one again.

It's one I think Jerry's 'froggy' voice and Brent's 85 keyboard tone could have done. Boy, that would have been fun. More fun than a Cosmic Charlie breakout? I don't know. But, in '85 there was potential. They were varying the set lists the most they'd done since '76! :-)

Just saw your post on I Can See For Miles. I heard / saw the overdubbed bass version 1 time on TV and have not been able to find it anywhere since. Is it on anyting? It's more obscure than the vinyl cut of Magic Bus on Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, which has a real ending and not a fade-out (as well as some other nuances). That's the one I grew up with on vinyl, and then they replaced it on the CD version with the fade-out version. Bothersome.

I have just been informed that the Swedish Postnord have returned my Daves to sender! No information when or why, and no attempt at communication from them. I have been chasing them constantly since it was sent from Brussels on 19 may since when no tracking updates.
I hope Dead net can send a replacement......
This is not the first time something from Dead Net/Rhino has not arrived. Not their fault, but I shall not be subscribing again. Too much hassle.

Shipping Bummer DaP 33 and 34

It's a nightmare! Seems I'm the only one in Germany who has not received the CDs.
Wonder why this happens obviously only with deadnet/Rhino.
I'd ordered Garcia Vol. 13 on June 24 from the 'Big River' USA. Guess what? CD had been shipped on 2nd July and arrived on July 13.
Now 11 weeks waiting time for DaP 34.
I'm also waiting for DaP 33. After I received a shipping note on 30 Jan. I was in good hope. On 3rd April I checked status.
Surprise, surprise. Status said: processing! Customer service promised me to send a copy as soon as possible.
Repeatedly on June 23.
Next trip might be the WMD box, shipped July 10th. And I'm worrying what becomes of DaP 35.
I understand possible delays due to Covid 19, but as it has proved it can be done better.
The shipping time for the June '76 box was 6 weeks, but he box made it and it was acceptable.
I'm not sure if'll I ever buy or subscribe again.

EROUPE DP 34: that’s crazy that y’all still are having problems getting 34? Murphy’s law too, it would have to be a killer 74.....have any of you tried contacting the Dr or Marye? Hope you receive yours one way or another, sooner than later.

Thanks for your concern Oroborous. I havnt reached out to Marye, because this time the fault doesnt seem to lie with Deadnet, rather, their choice of shipping. Of course the Covid epidemic has slowed things down considerably, but we are also talking about the delays of the various links in the chain which should get Daves to me, and Postnord has also showed a remarkable level of incompetence. I have phoned them numerous times but they do not recognise the tracking number, today I didnt let them fob me off, and was then told it had been returned to sender!
Deadnet have assured me that they will send a replacement, but even if they can get their warehouse to issue it, its another 2 months till I have it my hand. If it comes, thats a big if!

I'm really exhausted by the way they managed things! I have been shopping on the Deadnet for 25 years but the last 2 years have been a disaster! Just for the record...Last year I had to pay twice the price of the Pacific Northwest boxset due to some mysterious courier deposit costs, I contacted Deadnet and you know what...they didn't even answer me!
Obviously I don't buy boxes anymore, I don't want to throw money away

Anniversary show 7/17/82 Ventura

38 years ago today I was down in Ventura having a blast! The Dead put on a great show, they ended the first set with Truckin. I spent a lot of time in the beer garden that day. Crazy fun times had by all.

Can anybody tell me how to get to Dave's 35 'Comments'? The links to 'Description', 'Product Details', 'Track Listing', and 'Comments' on the main 'Product Pages' no longer go anywhere. I was only able to get to this 'Comments' page because I have it bookmarked. I'm using Chrome. Same results on Firefox.

Am I missing something? – Wouldn't be the first time. . . Onward?

I can access it from the product page using my iPad. The other way is to click Community at the top of the home page, go to the bottom of the list and select Dead Store Products then scroll down the list, at the moment the DaP 35 comments are found on the second page of this list but will surely move up to be first page as more people comment. Then you can bookmark it. Alternately, wait until it appears in the last four posts shown at the bottom of the home page click there and bookmark it.

Just as I was about to go into existential free-fall, you and another brother showed me a new way to Dave's 35 Comments. Thanks a ton! I still don't understand why I can't get to 'Comments' via the main 'Product' pages (I tried Dave's 34 & 35 and WMD). It didn't matter if I was using Chrome, Firefox or Safari on my MacBook Pro – the links on the main 'Product' pages don't work – all that loads is the product image, Listening Party, Dave's Backyard Chat and dead* links to 'Description', 'Product Details', 'Track Listing', and 'Comments'. Shipping to Europe

has anyone of you from Europe already received their copy of DaP34? because i'm still waiting. and the client support mailing agent or whatever wasn't helpful either, because he gave me a generic copypasta as an answer...

Europe CDs

Most European copies were delivered in June. Mine arrived in the Netherlands on June 3. Many others in Europe received theirs later that month but Scandinavians, amongst others, have, in many cases, not been so lucky and are still waiting or have given up. I am afraid this offers little consolation to those still waiting.

DaP 34 still missing in Belgium

I don't know for the rest of Europe, but here in Belgium I am still waiting for my DaP 34. I did receive a tracking number but USPS's status hasn't moved since may 12th and any response to my inquiry from customer service hasn't yet showed up (worst part about the situation is that the DaP shipments do transit in Brussels!). And of course that kind of thing had to happen with the DaP that came with the bonus disc. So, even if Dead.net issued a replacement, would it come with said bonus disc?

I'm also waiting for DaP 34-Germany

plus DaP33. A replacement shipping was promised for this one in April.

Long time Dead listener. I've purchased Dead shows on and off through the years, but have missed the boat on many great shows officially released in recent years due to life's demands. Last item I purchased was "Get Shown the Light." I was wondering is there anywhere to buy sold out official Dead releases for a reasonable price anywhere? I get on eBay and about pass out when I see the prices listed for individual Dave's Picks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I often look on Discogs site to see if there are second hand box sets that I am looking for. I can't say I have ever bought a Dead show from them-and those I have looked at don't come cheap. But I have found bargains by other artists-so it's worth a look if you haven't checked them out before.

Any sub/bonus-disc versions that are unnumbered?

This is kind of an odd question but I am wondering if anyone is aware of the existence of subscriber versions of this (with the bonus disc) that are NOT numbered? The reason I ask is because when this was released, my order got utterly lost en route, and so I contacted Dead.net for a replacement. IIRC, the title was already sold out, and yet I got a replacement with the subscriber bonus disc, which made me happy. I had been so anxious to hear an official version of these shows that by the time the replacement was sent, I had already obtained the digital audio files from what may or may not have been nefarious means.. So I kept my copy sealed. Then, lo and behold, months later my original order shows up at my door, and in one piece too!

But I've been hanging on to that replacement order for years now, and since times are especially tough in my house, I'm considering selling it for whatever the invisible hand of the market decides its worth. However, I can't discover whether or not it is a numbered copy without breaking the shrink wrap. So back to my question - are they any known *unnumbered* copies of this or any other DP entries that shipped with a bonus disc? I've also heard of people collecting the unnumbered / promo copies, which seems weird to me (it's not like promo vinyl where there are sound quality reasons to want a white-label promo).

On a related note, I received another unnumbered copy, this time DP 49, in February, and Dead.net replied to my inquiry in record time and sent out a replacement via FedEx lickity-split. I've also had a few vinyl orders that shipped out FedEx as the default lately. Good on them for (finally) upping their shipping game!
