Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? I'm not sure if there's a better to place to put this - and I've been ludicrously busy at work all month, so maybe this has already been discussed elsewhere - but is there a thread or discussion of Dave's recent 'Spend a Little Time on the Mountain with Dave Lemieux' YT video?

"And then I won't give anything away, but #51, I've been working very closely with Jeffrey Norman the last few weeks on #51... of course it's a complete show... there was a little bit of extra room, and we are rounding it out with music from a show that we released awhile ago... a couple picks ago... that wasn't complete because there wasn't room. [...] So if you want to finish off another complete show that was part of the Dave's Picks series, I won't tell you what show it was, what pick it was, no hints... but it will complete that show as well."

So surely that must be the rest of 10/24/70 St. Louis. But, does that imply we're going to get a Pigpen (and perhaps T.C.) release for Volume 51!?! I'd love to think so, esp after Dave all but said Vol 51 won't be a Keith nor a Brent era show. But I guess the presence of some 1970 filler doesn't guarantee that the 'main entree' will be from a similar year; after all, Dave's Vol 44 is a 1990 show that has that Cold Rain & Snow filler from December 1969...

I'm really partial to that Shea's show! I think there are several factors in play for me, including it being an early tape in my collection (I only had set II) of a really good audience recording. I enjoyed the timbre, the feel of the room. I know today it looks like a standard set list if you discount the DS but back then I didn't know differently. And I was really familiar with 12/31/78, so this night just felt on a continuum since I didn't know anything about band internal dynamics etc. Oroborous' review (thank you for typing that all up!!) was lovely to read. This afternoon I have been listening to 1/7/78 - one of the laryngitis shows in San Diego, and the night before the 'Uncle Bobo' show - but afterwards I think it's time to jump ahead a year to this night in Buffalo.

Yeah man, that January tenth show could easily be edited to under three an a quarter hours, which would leave just enough time for a nice slice of January twenty say from that groovy Serengeti drum jam through maybe NFA. Make a cool DaP, Of course that’s if there’s tapes, which word on the street is nadda : (

That Moore is a good tape! Says Sony TC-D5M recorder with mikes way up high in 6th row. Serendipitously I just looked at some decks from a high priced vendor and a restored one of those Sonys was like $700 to $1900! Say what? Are they that good? It ain't a Nak.

Edit: Nice set list! And it has a Dark Star!?!
Edit 2: Nice write up ORO! I'm always surprised by how many comments are "first show". Hey, we're all at the same show today, lol. Pass me that jib.

Happy 45th Anniversary OB. Shea's Buffalo Theater. Would love a recap. The tall end of the Keith and Donna era. Must have been a blast.

On a side note, I love Dave's enthusiasm, but there are currently four Dave's Picks for sale. I don't think I have ever seen that.

Don’t know if anybody would be interested in one or both of those this week? Just throwing it out there...

By the way, did anyone see that video footage from Englishtown that's on Youtube? I think first time I might have seen video footage from the concert. It was in color, too. Any chance the whole thing was video taped, or at least good portions of it?

The snippets I saw left me wanting more. Have a grateful day everybody! :-)

No, I have never seen any footage of Englishtown. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the tip on that WTJ.

Haven't heard from Bolo for a while. Hopefully a 75 pick will get your attention and let us know if we will be seeing any other releases besides Dave's and American Beauty Anniversary release.

I hear Pyongyang is nice this time of year. Or Iceland. Those are my guesses.

Looking to my inner consciousness, I can't decide if Englishtown is over or under-rated. I guess I will punt on this. It's worthy. I personally like the end of the He's Gone jam, but the Eyes of the World was always a highlight. I guess sometimes you have to accept and be happy with the win. Through all the pomp and circumstance, it's a very well played show.. one of the great ones.

For me this show is really special. I grew up as a huge fan of Blues for Allah. Used to have the tapestry in my room for several years. I think this finally meet its demise sometime in 2014.
Anyway, if you haven't listened to this show in a while or ever, you need to check it out. First set is filled with Blues for Allah tracks and a separated Franklins, great Big River and a great version of It must have been the Roses. Then they go into a great Truckin, Eleven, Drums and my personal favorite Milkin the Turkey! Love this Milkin the Turkey.
Finish it up with a NFA, GDTRFB and One More Saturday Night.
Only complaint the show ended.
Sound quality is A+.

Big Fan of Blues for Allah too. I regret I am two days behind.. two back to back great shows.

Great picks.. I might get the chance to play catch up tomorrow.. provided I don't stay up too late watching 06/21/89 Shoreline Amphitheatre on YouTube. Did we pick this one yet? It's kinda good.

I'm going with the video today. I am laying flooring and will be able have it on a screen fed into some (albeit crappy) external speakers. Not even going to check the setlist, so it'll be more like if it were live. Long time since I listened to my tapes of this one. Thanks Jim.

...where I had very limited internet access (aside from my phone,) so I missed out on a bunch of picks. Other than missing this board and having access to the Archive, I really didn't mind the disconnect.

Glad to see that 3/18/77 was the pick for my B'Day. That is one of my 77 faves... I too would love to see another 77 box set collecting those Winterland shows.

Today is Shoreline 89? Sounds groovy to me.

Peace

Was on pay for view live, with simulcast on FM. Funny, my cousin and I watched it on a tiny little TV, but through big McIntosh system: C 40, MC2300, and XR 7 speakers. Tape I made was awesome except for the obnoxious station ids in bad places and I needed to pop in another tape so think I have a gap? Used to not dig this one so much, think it’s grown on me more since. But compared to most of the rest of summer tour.....
Not a big Clarence fan either, meaning I dig the dude, but always felt like he was a fish outta water with the Dead. Think there’s some Jerry shows he seems better on? Believe we saw him at the June 90 Warfield shows and he was good? Actually waiting on Vol 13 as I was told he’s pretty good on that one...originally got scared off...
Now that y’all brought 6/21 up, maybe I’ll try and watch that one in the theatre tonight? Think today & tomorrow I’m going to do those 84 shows I proposed earlier this week, kinda digging the 84 lately...

EDIT: belated happy, happy, joy, joy to Otis!

It was a good one! Spent the night and early morning hours with my corners a considerable bit brighter, listening to nearly all of The Beatles from Help on with the wife and a dear friend, then a solo sunrise walk with my dog, then alone, on the beach while the sun came up and I came down, listening to Dave's 5... pretty sweet stuff.

Speaking of... have we done Dave's 5 yet? I could listen to it again (and again, and again, and again...) If not, how about for tomorrow 7/23? If so, I hear there is an 84 party going on somewhere around these parts.

Peace

Dave's 5 was one of the days I was out. No worries. I thought that it was odd we hadn't hit that one yet.

Sticking with the Fall of 73, I am all for firing up 11/25/73 - There are two copies on the archive, one with "filler" between sets, one without. The second set looks to be on the short side:

Around
Eyes>
WRS
Casey Jones
Sugar Mag >
GDTRFB >
OMSN
We Bid you Goodnight.

Here is the link to the show without the filler (it is the Charlie Miller transfer): https://archive.org/details/gd1973-11-25.sbd.miller.113007.flac16

Now, the other one has the whole show, plus some interesting filler... it is the heart of the second set from 12/4/71 Felt Forum, and includes M&MU>TOO>Mexicali>TOO>Wharf Rat. Seems odd to include such a different era, but it does come between sets, and it could be thought of as intermission music. Hmm... anyway, here is the link to the DeadLists SBD with filler: https://archive.org/details/gd73-11-25.sbd.sacks.2213.sbeok.shnf

I think I might go with the Charlie Miller without filler, then follow it up with the whole 12/4/71 show. I love that Felt Forum run.

Happy listening, DeadLand!

Peace

I love towards the end when Bob says, "Everybody turn around and dig the sunset" (or something along those lines)... For some reason I can visualize that moment...... last show before that end of the year tour that is so famous.... On a side not just got The Ritz shows 1/27 & 1/28/86 in mail. Wasn't suppose to come until saturday. Going to listen to first and then Feyline... Bob t

P.S. just remembered it Bob's dig the sunset might not be on the Miller version, on my cassette tape that I listened to a 1000 times on my sony walkman!!!!

Can only imagine where they might of gone if they hadn’t lost Brentski? How long would they have rode the crest of the wave.... Here’s to Brent, (imagine my toast held high....ok, it’s only emer-gen-cy , but it’s still a toast!)

6/21/89: well, the word that kept coming up was fickle, this show is all over the place. Poor Bob can’t get a break which seems to mess with his mojo until at least Cassidy? Maybe even not fully until second set? Jerry has a couple flubs early on like TOG, but more than makes up for it with hot versions of many songs, and like most of summer 89 he’s smiling and dancing, and he and Brent look like a couple of kids in love, beautiful to watch, especially after the permanent chin glued to the chest years....Clarence does better than I remember, but you can tell he’s mostly winging it, which is hard to do with Dead music. If your a muscian who’s played this music live, and have ever had a neophyte sit in, perhaps you know what I mean?
That is to say, nothing against the big man, as the majority of folks I’ve seen sit in have the same scenario except on easier, we’ll known tunes like say NFA etc... The Dead are just so unique that it’s not easy to wing it, even fir them sometimes! Lol
So though I consider it a good show, compared to many of the great shows of summer 89, I still don’t feel it’s top shelf where mama hides the cookies...which is like saying it’s only a BMW and not a Porsche!
Speaking of 89, really looking forward to the SS Friday with 9/29/89! Never heard this one and of course we get the big reveal, and it will be interesting to see how this falls within the spectrum of Summer to Fall 89?
Did superficial 4/16/84 yesterday. About how I (didn’t) remember it, meaning similar to above, good show, but not sure I’d say top tour echelon? Might try today’s 73 pick and 4/17/84 as I need to get caught up at work so need the motivation! Well, nothing to it but to do it!....Rock on mi amigos!

EDIT: somewhere someone started a shoe song list....how bout Sailin’ Shoes, by......wait for it.....Little Feet (cue rom shot)

Hi-Ya

Happy Belated Birthday Otis, sounds like you did it up right.
Welcome Back.

Got the Jerry Acoustic CDs Volume 14 and Bonus and am digging them.
The sound quality is excellent and the performances are real enjoyable.

Due to my obsessive Grateful Dead collecting and the investment that requires, I’ve pretty much avoided most of the solo stuff as my time and means are limited.

That being said, this one peaked my interest due to the GD material covered and the bonus CD.
I’m a sucker for limited edition bonus CDs.
So I bit and now I might’ve got bit back.

While listening I decided to look into what else was out there in regards to Garcia & Kahn acoustic performances. And yeah, that’s a whole other wormhole that appears pretty deep.

Kinda blown away with some of my (new to me, old to some) discoveries, for instance if you look at the number of performances Jerry played in ’82, when you combine his Grateful Dead touring with his solo projects.. God Damn I declare! I’m amazed with his output. Especially when you consider ’82, as far as I understand it, Jer was beginning to really struggle with addiction issues. How he managed to play / work this much is truly remarkable and a credit to his strength and determination to create music. Impressive to say the least.

That brings me to my tie in, looking at the Jerry solo stuff, I stumbled on the 11/28/73 Jerry Garcia, Mickey, Phil & Ned Lagin stuff that’s floating around out there. Some truly trippy excursions into weirdness. Digging it.

And lo, when I look at the pick today, it’s 11/25/73.

Cool…

Hey Oroborous, you mentioned tomorrow night we get the big reveal during the SS. What are you referring to?

Good to see you GOGD. Thought maybe you were trapped out in Portland.

Listened to Garcia 14 first.... Feyline is good from start to finish.... No giant jam but you get a set ending Playing, then an around and around followed by Eyes into Weather Report, (50 plus minutes for 4 songs) so you sort of get the jammed out feeling.... have a good night everyone.... bob t

There's a few of us here that have tapped into quite the collection of Jerry stuff, talking about the unreleased stuff.

Bet you know who we are and where to find us, but there is a good bit of acoustic Jerry and John stuff floating around.

In fact.. I need to double check my facts, but I think my first Jerry Show was Jerry and John at the Lisner Auditorium in DC circa 82 or 83??? I remember it being a short show but quite good.

Anyway.. not an empty offer, Jerry stuff does exist.

Not sure what's in the pipeline for later this week, but there is interest for more 84 and 85, I've been going there in my free time lately....

Thanks Jim!

Noted for sure.

Have you checked out the 11/28/73 Jerry Mickey & Ned?

Wild stuff. I was digging the supposed Tarot outtakes filler.

This 11/25/73 PITB ain’t bad either.

I need to explore some more. There’s so
much good stuff!

Wow- I'm just listening to this for the first time now. I love this stuff! - thanks GOGD for the tip! Great spacey relaxing music. Perfect for reading or a stressful day at work. I listen to compilations of Spring 90 drums/space when I need relaxing background music. Now I can also listen to this 11/28/73 stuff!

I'm looking forward to the new Garcia/Kahn. I saw 3 shows from one of their 84 tours but haven't listened to hardly any Garcia/Kahn since. I certainly loved the shows I saw, though.

p.s., edit, I assume 11/28/73 is from THE one and only Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco?! Such a beautiful special place by the ocean. I visited it as a tourist!!

Stoked you’re diggin’ it. I enjoyed stumbling on that this am. I was goin’ places. Endless treasures!

Just like those ‘86 Jerry shows.
35 years of collecting and still finding new stuff everyday.

Watching the 6/21/89 estimated with Clarence now. Yet Another treasure, more familiar with this one, but it’s been so long it’s kinda new again.

Good stuff, Fun sharing :)

Edit - yep, the palace of fine arts, although there’s a bunch of debate about the dates of all the material. Some of it from that date pretty certain, maybe not all. Supposedly Phil mixed it in quadrophonic stereo... wooo
