joshpbs - we've been around the block a few times on this, and we keep ending up in the same place. Chaos-management is the order of the day around here. I often wonder what the board would look like if everyone could create their own topics at will. What kinds of topics would there be? My personal fear is a million all-about-me bloggy type topics, which is fine in some places, but doesn't seem to fit the vibe around here. Was there a conversation you were wanting to have that you don't see a place where it'd fit? Please, drop us a note, or an email, or say something right here, and we'll see what we can do to accomodate you. It's been working pretty well so far, and the chaos, even in the wee hours of the beginning of the new site, has been pretty manageable. Things are getting better as the kinks are getting worked out, and I'm excited about how the site is shaping up!

If the program you are running only allows staff to make topics, maybe try making a new member group that all members are that allow the making of topics. If you do this so you can monitor the content better, you should think about making a mod for each board. Just a suggestion.

Really, we've been known to drop the ball sometimes, but we TRY to be responsive... DNC (DeadNet Central) is one place where regular users can't start topics, and it seems to rock right along. For now at least, it's a chaos management issue, mostly, and the software does not support having one area where people can start topics and another where they can't. All of which said, if you want a topic on something, speak up! In the What Else Should We Be Talking About topic, a PM to izzie or me, anything along those lines usually works. We check in at various times during the day and evening, most of the time.

I have suggested a fair amount of topics to the moderators and they have responded and put them up in any time from several minutes to several hours (at the longest). They are on the site quite often. Give it a try. Thank you marye and izzie. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

    A few suggestions.
Hello! I love the website and the content so far. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is a very good site. I was wondering why regular members cannot post their own topics? There should be a general board where members can post what they want to talk about. People should be able to make their own topics on every board too. Just a suggestion. I am a member on a few forums and this is the only one where admins make the topics .

I think there are a number of DNC folks here
and from what I can tell they're mostly using the same names, though a few reported problems. All the old Dead.net forums are defunct. We're exploring the possibility of restoring them as a read-only archive, but we're not there yet. Feel free to discuss Seinfeld in the TV topic here. Meanwhile, DNC is alive and well also, right here, and you'll see quite a few of us over there too.

could someone possibly change the filter box on All Recent Posts so that it defaults to <> and not <> A tiny, but nifty piece of streamlining..with so much on site now I find this route is the quickest way to find out what's new and it also helps keep me away from the Tapers Section (I worry about turning into one of those people who stop and stare at car wrecks) thankee kindly

Well, it's like 5am here and I can't sleep. I work nights so normally I should be awake away but, on the weekends I change my sleeping patterns around. Argh!? Anyway, today my daughter is coming over to visit for the weekend. I am really looking forward to seeing her and spending quality time with her. What else?? Oh...yeah I am trying figure out my checkbook. It looks like I messed up the adding and now have an extra $100! Hmmmm?

no stupidity involved if you've never had occasion to cross paths with the word, which, as you suspected earlier, is more or less synonymous with "everywhere," except it's an adjective. (Why yes, I AM an English major...) Sentence: "The Dead were in town for a run of shows, and tie-dye was ubiquitous."

marye is right. A well-put together concise sentence can be much more clever than a long, flowery one, full of big words, that makes no sense. I missspelled " a lot" in an earlier post. Two teeny tiny words, not "alot" like I wrote. THAT is more heinous than not having stumbled across "ubiquitous". ************************************************************** Don't part with your illusions. (despite the distinct possibility that Steve is just goofin' with us...) I think one thing that affects how often I hear the word is the Silicon Valley thing (I used to edit a computer magazine years ago, and a lot of my pals are techies). Between the engineers and the PRoids, the word gets used a lot, as in "ubiquitous connectivity," "ubiquitous wireless," etc. It's practically a buzzword in those circles, which probably has to do with why it's so commonplace here.

I need to look that up, but I tend to assume it's the same root as cryptic, encryption, stuff like that -- secret codes and stuff. then there's "quodlibet," as in "quodlibet for tenderfeet." Which, back in my young days of Latin studies, I coulda told you what it meant, but now, no. My smartass Latin says it means "whatever the hell you want," but hey, my Latin dictionary is all the way across the room...

Hal gets my intellectual of the week vote for that BUT Did the Dead spell Quodlibet as Quadlibet because they couldn't spell or because there is some secret and very clever joke involved? Also Is there yet a word for running around the streets with a laptop looking for unsecured wireless networks to get online with? Its fun! bye

Coscmicbadger - it is called warwalking, on a bike warbiking and in a car it is wardriving. There are also codes that people place outside of unsecured wireless with chalk, it is called warchalking and was inspired by hobo symbols that they used outside of homes for handouts. Warning and disclaimer - this may be illegal in certain countries. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

i've been asking the same question since june...why is the postage rate to canada $11 per cd? that is unheard of..i buy alot of cd's from the u.s and the rates are usually $2 per cd or at most $4 for the first and $1 ea after that...and they use the same mail as you do? this is preventing me from placing orders from this website...the last time i asked this i got a rude answer saying it was being looked into....but how long does it take? canada is only next door to the u.s , so to charge us this rate is depressing...

I blame Canada! Blame Canada! Blame Canada! It seems that everything's gone wrong since Canada came along. Blame Canada! Blame Canada! They're not even a real country anyway. When Canada is dead and gone, there'll be no more Celine Dion! And so, the draft will begin tomorrow as more and more troops are needed to invade the Canadian border. The Canadian government pleads for a peaceful resolution, but naturally, we're not listening. Oh, good job Mrs. Broslofski. Thanks a lot!

When the sight was redesigned and it was relaunched, I was under the impression that there was new life for the Grateful Dead as far as new releases and new merch but that has'nt happened. Seems that everything has been put on hold for the foreseeable future. Is it really finished? Are there some legal reasons that we are'nt seeing as many new releases per year as a year and a half ago? Are the vaults for the most part sealed indefinitely? Is GDP still in charge of the output of new merch or has that been taken over by a different entity? Do the surviving band members still have a say or any input on what and when things are released? Now that it's Halloween and the Grateful Dead tradition for musical treats has been broken, will there be any new (unreleased music) offerings available for the fans to purchase by years end? Do other people that are a part of this forum share any of these concerns? Should I just give up on expecting anything new and just start supporting the free trade of quality soundboard/multi-track bootleg/pirated recordings because the well appears to have run dry? I was really hoping for some beginning of the holiday season great news but can't help but feel somewhat let down. Sorry for being a bummer but I'm somewhat disappointed.

Thanks Izzie. I pretty much check this sight daily hoping for news of new releases and just when I was on the verge of giving up hope, there it is, a brand new release and series. I hope this is just the beginning of the floodgates being opened wide because of the wealth of material. I'm happy that it's from an under-represented year from Brents tenure (the Brent era being my favorite), even if it's taken from different shows (which I don't mind). Here's to wishing for the Alpine '87 run (regardless of the quality in the vault) in it's entirety, Laguna Seca '88 or really anything and everything from '88-'90. Incidently I think the compilation aspect will come in handy particularly during the Vince/Bruce-Vince era.

How could we not empathize with you on your 10/31 post? What just happened to you is kinda like what was happening to most of those fans at Winterland (and most other Dead fans) right before Phil finally played the intro to Dark Star on 12/31/78. I was relatively new to the scene at that time but it was a big deal back then and still is today. A lot of Dead fans were getting what they needed for a lot of shows and then ... they got what they wanted. Is patience still a virtue? God, let's hope so. Are anger and being quarrelsome about money acceptable in the Grateful Dead world (huge breath before I run) - God, let's hope not. "From day to day, just lettin' it ride, You get so far away from how it feels inside, You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all."

But I can't seem to find where he is posted as a topic. I know that several of us wished him a Happy Birthday. Could he and John Perry Barlow be listed in the subsection Grateful Deadunder section Grateful Dead along with the other band members where they both belong? Just thinking that it would be a good thing to have a separate forum for "In search of old friends" and another for "In search of things needed". I feel bad for those looking for old tour buddies when the In search of forum is filled with over 360 odd posts and rapidly filling up with more, most of which are for THINGS not family. Many folks may not find who they are looking for because there are too many posts for people to be bothered wading through. Some editing would be needed to put the existing names/posts into the new forum of course. Did I say how nice it is to have this place? Thanks again! ;) Jerry Christmas and may enlightenment come to all this festive season!!! Much Love, Jody Are you kind?

It probably does make sense to divide up the next incarnation of the topic, but I can seriously assure you that the existing one isn't going to be edited and reposted, any more than Introductions or What Are You Listening To Now. It was created as a general In Search Of and it'll stay that way until the new version emerges, and remain readable thereafter. Which isn't to say that those still searching for tour buddies can't repost, of course!
