my third show
It was a long wait since the Lyceum in 1972 for another Dead concert. [I was loaded with lord-knows-what for this show] All the hype about the Wall of Sound was justified. It really did come across like a giant hi-fi system. Phil in particular had a huge and beautiful sound and he certainly used it on EOTW in particular. I also remember really enjoying the Phil/Ned Seastones sequence although most of the rest of the audience were definitely not! I also remember a gorgeous Ship of Fools and a great US Blues encore. The stream on archive.org of this show is very nice.
Ally Pally
Scarlet Begonias was a brilliant opening and after that it just got better - being stoned on tequila helped though not a guy who claimed to be from Hawkwind and who, during the break, kept offering us non-existent cocaine. When it got to the stage of everyone lighting and holding up matches, lighters, one of my friends freaked out all those around us by waving around a small lit gas stove we had for making tea. After the show, I blew my big chance. Bill K returned a frisbee someone had thrown so I followed after him and suddenly found myself in the backstage room where the whole band was gathered. I sat down but somebody approached and asked me in our polite English way to leave so I did, without uttering a word, not even to say thank you -one of the few regrets in my life. I caught sight of Jerry as I left with what seemed to be a gentle smile on his face which still stays with me. One of the best, if not the best, concerts I've been to so I'll take the opportunity to thank the band now for a wonderful experience.
My only show
I remember 'Playing in the band ' being one of the highlights just before the interval. Then going to the toilet just by the stage and suddenly realising that it was Phil Lesh standing next to me.
Ol' Deadheads Unite..... or not as the case may be....
Hi MBW I've sent you a PM. It's Nik Nic. I remember the wall of very clear sound and the fact the Dead gave us eye contact. Lovely band----thanks for introducing me to them---- still listen to them on a regular basis. Miss Jerome a lot.A mate of mine, Dougie (front room left at Grove Street) is in a Dead tribute band, Wildflower Seed. All the best.
