Fun show outdoor show.I
Fun show outdoor show.
I think my ticket said Rye Gate Fairgrounds.
Show seemed scripted though. tight musically, but lacked alot of the emotional punch that I experienced in teh 70's. Maybe that was just the way it was..
Excellent New Speedway (best tune of the night)
Para sailers came down from the sky during sunset.
youssou n'dour was very very good.
First Show
This was my first show. What I remember was that it was sooooooo hot out with no shade, I ended up in the trunk at times for shade. I also remember all the fun and crazy people I met there. I remember going thru the gates with great anticipation of what I was about to experience, and was not dissapointed. I had a blast and did not want the night to end!!!
friendly vibes
This show was and will always be a special one.The opener N'Dour was excellent.
The crowd was completely into it.
Jerry flubbed some words and it wasn't a great show as that goes but the playing was very good and the atmosphere was very laid back friendly. Traffic was terrible getting into there and the next year was no better. Getting out was almost as fun and we just waited it out as it made no sense sitting in a running vehicle for hours. Nothing really stands out as super but the overall experience was one that was rare in the later years and not to mention something not in a middle of a major city.
Anyone remember the huge balloon at the gas station where we got off for the airport that said "welcome deadheads" ? sums it up :)
This show was a major
This show was a major dissapoinment to me the speaker towers sounded like crap the band played poorly IMO It was nice to see Jerry play I want to tell you. I felt this song may have been a apology of sorts.
Huh?
Wow! I can't believe what I'm reading....Maybe it's because I wasn't ON anything at this show, but I gotta say....this was possibly the worst show of the 33 that I attended. Jerry flubbed more than a few words. He missed notes and lyrics in practically every tune. My guess is that he was having a rough night due to extracirricular activities... but it is not my place to assume that to be true.
I LOVE the Grateful Dead. I'm not a hater...but this show was a dud, IMO.
The tune of the night was "Corrina", in which Phil crushed the intro. The band seemed a bight tighter in the 2nd set, although Jerry seemed to have faded back post Space...in particular he completely botched SOTM. He missed almost every lyric and was completely lost on his guitar. THE BEST thing about that was TWO NIGHTS LATER at RFK, when he played the "redemption" version of SOTM. I have little doubt that Jerry knew he was "off" in High Gate and came back with a vengeance at RFK...the SOTM from 2 nights later was STELLAR!!!

Higate 94
Gotta agree, Pappy - the performance was pretty uninspired.
But I dug the Vermont setting, and the whole thing had a wonderful innocence and energy. Counting the pre and post-show activities, this was one of my favorites. I'll never forget the spinning hippy who slammed into our car at 2 AM (we were sleeping in the lot, couldn't get out). I opened the door and said, "DUDE! ARE YOU OK?" and he looked to the sky and as he spun off, said, "THANK YOU! THANK YOU, GOD!" (-;
"When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me"
Highgate
thie was my last show and probably the worst...im from vermont...but there just was way too many people and poor sound....no connection to the audience i felt...funny thing was for me, SOTM was my favorite despite the problems noted above, perhaps because this song reminds me of my mon, who had just passed away.....
We missed this one... :( ...
This show wasn't on schedule when it first came out... We did have tickets for the Dead later that summer, they started late due to the soccer that was being played in the US... We went to visit my sister in Burlington, VT... First we were going to camp in Adirondacks and we did see a lot of Dead Heads and thought that was cool... Had a great time spent about three weeks camping and the night before we were going to drive into VT we called my sister and she says, " where are you guys." Why...?... The Dead are playing tonight....WHAT...?... I've been hoping you would call... Well it was late the sun was going down... We went to our camp site by the lake, put on some good ole GD and had are own concert in the mountains of the Adirondacks ... The next day Burlington looked like they got invaded, what a great site to see...
don't be a hater
Hey PappyPGH,
I wasn't on anything and I thought "Standing on the Moon" was really cool. I think they played it for the 25th anniversary of the moon landing.
Actually, come to think of it, I liked the whole show!

quite the scene
Vermont had never seen anything like that I guarantee it. The heads flocked to this place and it was very cool. Too bad music was marginal at best. It had it's moments but will be remember by me as one of the nicest outdoor east coast gigs in a long time. We sure had fun that I remember, but by this point my days of seeing them often was slowing down so my impression was the band was off but the heads were on.
SOTM
Standing on the Moon was stellar, Jerry sang that ending "but I'd rather be with you" a few times, went into the guitar outro a bit, and then went back into singing "i'd rather be with you" again and again with intense emotion and it was for me the highpoint of the night. Listen again, its killer
maybe i had too much too fast?
I remember not being able to hear too clearly and spending most of the opening looking for a better spot to hear from. I ended up smack in the middle (prob. 50-74yds from the stage) by the time jack straw came around and the sound was pretty good
An uninspired performance.
The band just fumbled thru the show, the writing was on the wall, and the end seemed near. I left disappointed and sad that my worst fears (read: the dream was soon to be over) were being realized. As it turned out it would be my penultimate show.
The worst show of 50 id seen
The worst show of 50 id seen and my last show unfortunately... no water no light, and every store for 25miles was wiped out of every item they sold. worst traffic jam Ever! Jerry was out of it... sad sad... They worked him TOO hard in 1994 poor fella. Money hungry hounds.
Dead Shows like Highgate, VT are part of the legacy
Highgate, VT was the last time I saw The Greatful Dead as I new them with Jerry Garcia.
The Dead played a show in the middle of nowwhere, because of the demand. What up and coming band from Vermont did/does this?
Dead Shows like Highgate, VT are part of the legacy. Be happy you endured the heat and crowds and SoSo show. \
A GreatfulDead Show has many parts.
Highgate where???
Man...we really dug the thought of a Dead show up in the middle of nowhere Vermont....that was cool...on the other hand the sound was way bad...but we were having a real good time, thank you....We had a caravan come from Bangor, Maine and had thought this trip out enough so that we had a motel room booked for the night before and the night after, so we could shit, shower and shave the day before and the day after....thank god!
For some reason...the higher we got....Youssou N'Dour became "You should do her"...and that was the theme for the day!!! Another great(ful) Dead experience....
As a head of longstanding
As a head of longstanding (though shows attended of recent past were far and few between - and resigned to the Tri State), I relished the thought of a road trip to Highgate (I would kill for a High Time at Highgate "t" if they were still around - simple but cool). We got there the night before, dug the scene, and I know we moved our car (and forgot to take the cooler - I hope that you enjoyed the vodka and sandwiches ; - )
The show was nowhere near a vg one, but hey, it was a chance to see the Dead out in the country, and beautiful country it was. Y'Sou was just so good. I remember Phil being stage side digging him and his group.
Speedway Boogie was indeed a highlight, but what resonates with me 16 years later, possibly forever, was my really missing home during SOTM - I checked my watch and it was about 5 minutes to midnight. Litttle did I realize that some 350 miles away, my wife was holding our Golden Retriever, Belle, as she 'passed' into the ages at just about that very moment.
This first show at Highgate will be remembered for it's innocence, it's great vibe, and wonderful weather. Too bad, '95 turned out to be a complete disaster and my vowing that it would be my last ever Dead show (little did I know it would be).
Great Crowd, Greatest Venue!
Like I said the crowd in 94 was great, the venue is what made the show. Some people talk about sky divers or whatever, no that guy was flying an ultralight illegally over the air space and got arrested for it. (basically a parachute with an engine and propeller) No one was getting hassled at all, people were all having a good time. The locals welcomed us. What an awesome venue what an awesome crowd! Need the venue for vibes or furthur, I'd drive the 5 hours to go up there instead of the 45 minutes to Mansfield MA any day!
right there with ya jer!
boy, after a long journey filled with wine from worcester ma the night before and a long day filled with even more of the grape variety....i was not in the greatest shape! went up front thinking they were coming on first, had no water, neither did anyone else, i made my way straight to where all my friends were by the soundboard, (how i found them i'll never know), only to soon be dizzy and ill and i remember from somewhere up front came two advils and before long i was being dragged to med tent. i remember they gave me a bread bag to heave in and it had a hole...yep everything on the grass right next to cot. next thing i remember is being put on a backboard and rushed thru the crowd (and it looked like a parting sea of heads) to the real med tent where they had to i.v. me to rehydrate. i don't remember much of the music, but reading here, they were as bad as i was! in the med tent my bf helped out some youngins one who was on his first trip, and it was NOT a good one, my friend got him thru it. was finally released during standing on the moon and it was the most emotional song i've ever heard jerry do......still get goosebumps thinking about it.had tickets but had to miss the following year's highgate due to learning to be a wharf rat and missed what would have been my last show in 95 before jerry passed.....i'm grateful i had the experience of this one tho!

checked back in
I went to this one with a group of tour heads.Man the times had changed. Not for the good either. To many people and music was lame. Glad I was on tour in the very early 80's I consider it to be one of last good era's They lost a step come late 80's few good shows but to many people follwing them .i liked the 82 83 84 summers. Even 85 even though more people.
Awesome Day
This was a beautiful day that was the embodiment of how I view the Dead's music in my head: sunny, bright and mellow... on tape this show can be tough to listen to, but when we were there it was great...basically this was the image of a dead show I still carry with me all these years later, so heads, don't dump on 94 so much, there's good things to be mined in almost EVERY Dead show,Other ones, Furthur,Phil + co.,Bobby and the Gang, whatever...Let's keep it alive as long as we can, and be thankful that the trip IS a bright light for so many, and the vibe is still alive!
And He Shook His Bones
It was not yet dusk. We watched him in his white t dancing along with the streaming rows of people. Not quite right...but you never know. "Hey, a ghost" the couple sitting beside us says. Sure enough! Thanks for the witness.
