Last of four featuring the complete unreleased soundboard recording of 6/12/80 in Portland. According to Deadhead legend, My St Helens erupted during "Fire on the Mountain." I hope it's true!
Enjoy!

Concert Eruption
It's definitely true, Mt St Helens was erupting. It actually began with a moderate explosive eruption about the time the Dead went on - but a second, much larger explosion occurred during "Fire on the Mountain". I think the band was told about the situation, because they did only one encore, and that only when the crowd really insisted. It didn't seem like the normal Grateful Dead, on a night when they were playing great and had a really enthusiastic crowd I'd expected at least two encores.
When we got to the parking lot and saw the ash falling, it all made sense. We didn't get far that night, driving north up I-5 through Vancouver the ash fall got increasingly heavy, the traffic kicked up so much of it that visibility was almost nil. The guy driving pulled off at the Gee Creek rest area and we waited it out there. The ash cloud generated a wild thunderstorm, we sat in the car and watched the fireworks, crashed out for a while, then drove home about 5am.

That’s awesome this happened at or close enough to claim!!! I was born when St. Helens erupted and named Stephen. Hmmm…🤔🤔😂😂 Strange enough for me😵💫
This Althea is the best-ever…
This Althea is the best-ever by D&C and dare I say on par with the GD. The same show's Wharf Rat is equally sick.
Mt St Helens…it’s true!
Proud to say I was there. And yes it’s true…when we left the Coliseum that night, there was about an inch of ash on the ground. Whenever I think back to that show, I think of it being in December, remembering snow instead of ash.
