Bolo24 says: An Idea, Perhaps? Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

It took 5 days from the “your order has shipped” email from the GD Store until UPS My Choice said “package received for processing”.
It then took another week for transport and delivery.

Hey OB, we will take a 77 show mention out of you.
I like this show. Sound quality is great. Enjoyed the whole show. Love these early versions of Jack a Roe. Great FOD. Groovy Estimated Eyes. Stella Blue! And close it out with Brokedown Palace, yes! Another good May 77. Not sure if it ever gets released, but who knows. I think they will release more 77, would love to see 10/2/77. One of my favorites from the fall. But hey, more variety, mix it up, absolutely. Like start hitting the early Brent years a little more......

Was thinking about other Nassau show from Spring 1990 for tomorrow, 3/30/90. Everyone knows that night before with BM. Let me know.

    Still no tracking for me.
Conekid, did you get notified through UPS my choice?

you been hangin’ out at the Bong Rec center again ; ) I wish I had 42! Hopefully I can drive the Other Half nuts this WE!
Oh, speaking of, she thinks there should be a board for “Deadhead significant others”, a place where the poor folks who have to live with us nuts can commiserate! Perhaps we should lobby Marye?

DV, recommend is a strong word!
Occasionally I might actually recommend something, but usually I’m just scratching some itch, or more likely shooting in the dark lol. I don’t know what I’m goin for, but I’m gonna go for it fo sure!
To go where not many Deadheads have gone before! Like Star Trek for shows!

5/18/77: so as I said, this was on Dave’s “list” which we’ve been trying to chip away at the last couple years.
It’s May 77 so definitely not a bad show, but it seemed a tad lesser than some of its neighbors.
This is perhaps why it hasn’t been released?
Meaning, the bar can be pretty high when it comes to May 77, so though this was a good show, I didn’t find it great, comparatively. Like it’s good, but not Buffalo good…
Hopefully that makes sense and no one’s going to torch my house tonight lol.
Daves 41 I found to be up to the task, for example.
Now, my listening conditions where not optimum, but I think I was able to get a good enough read? But maybe not?
Interested to know how y’all feel about this one?
I’m sure some 77 nuts will want this (all 77) out, but I’m from the camp that feels there’s enough 77, at least for a while, since it’s been covered more than any other year: 5 DP, 6 DaP, 1 RT, 1 DL, and four boxes if you include Hartford.
To me, this would be another good street, wrong house pick, of course he’s been to all the other houses already lol.

So since no one’s offered up a pick, I might hit some more 82. Perhaps a little west coast warm vibe on this cold snowy morn? Say 7/17/82 and/or 7/18/82? A little California dreaming for hump day?
Maybe tomorrow Doc can take us primal again, though we’d love to hear from some new blood, or GOGD, Cept he’s a slacker now ; )

Guessing Jim’s heard it so he can catch up, but those needing an immediate fix can score?
    But I’m open to suggestions…

This is one off of Dave’s list, but reviews are somewhat mixed i.e., it’s great, versus its good but not great etc, no one said it sucked…if used as pick, would Dave have gone to the right street but wrong house again? We’ll let you decide.
Of course there’s not many houses left on that street.

His job is to shed light, not to master: all 3 of those shows are good in their own ways. Obviously era differences, but all are good era comparatively. So Chever way your pleasure tends.
All good things my friend! Time is elastic, keep at it and it will loosen.
Having to be an adult can really suck, especially when one is not prepared to be one. At least that’s my story lol.
Hang in there baby (remember those posters with the cat?)

So steer me guys, of the three mentioned, where should I go today? Or should we just start anew? I might be getting my 42 soon, which will only gum up the wheels further, but in a good way.

5/1/70 was ok, nothing mind blowing, good little show for at work. Another that I’ve been meaning to check out as I went on a field trip there to check it out in HS. Fun show for sure, nice representation of a solid ’84 show.
Whenever I hear a good ’84 show, I always think, hmm wonder what the rest of that tour was like.
I guess that’s the magic that kept the Dead on the road for so long.

Great Set 1 with real nice Bird Song, and like many have commented a top Jack Straw, best of the ‘80s? best after hiatus? However you want to quantify it, it get’s a lot of best talk.

The Shakedown > Samson got the 30 Days treatment in 2017.
A relative newly dusted off Smokestack Lightning with a real sweet jam after, short drums > space (is there a reel flip in here I’m missing, might have to research). Great post Drums set list Wheel > TOO > Black Peter > Lovelight. And last of 2 Revolutions for the year. First Black Peter into Lovelight? First of the infamous Amy Boards.

It was a nice return from my 1970 wormhole that I entered on 7/24 with the 9/20/70 show, went deep on that one, even ventured into the land of the PERRO session tapes, fun trip. Completely enjoyable and fascinating.

Nice Pick!

Well, I've heard it said there's something wrong in my head, now.

And the doctors can't seem to figure it out. Been on the shelf for a couple months with an odd malady - more or less constant dizzy, spacey feeling, which family and friends quickly pointed out seems par for the course for me (yeah, love you guys, too).

It feels kind of like I've had a couple of pretty strong mai tais. Not the worst feeling in the world, and I get the "buzz" without having to spend money on libations! Or a round trip ticket to Hawaii.

But, I've had to be horizontal a good bit of the time, can't really exercise, drive, etc. The best way to explain it is that I've been living inside of a 2 month long Dark Star>Seastones>Drums>Space>Feedback. With a Samba encore - Yikes!

Anyway, things have improved over the last several days, and I'm gradually returning to civilized society, although that seems to be slipping away lately out here on the west coast.

So, I'm only five dozen shows behind the rest of you. I should be able to catch up by the end of the weekend! And I nominate 9/19/2003 for a listen one of these days - a terrific post-GD show.

Cheers and good health to all.

Edit: Man, I really have been out of the loop for a bit. Neon Nikes - really??

Good to see you back in the mix Bolo. Man, good to hear things are getting better. A little Black Peter?

We will have to cut you some major slack on the past picks.

2003? You will have to help us out with that pick.

Or perhaps Mexicali Blues.

I think what Bolo was trying to say is Dave's Picks 36 is 04/16/78 Huntington Civic Center - Huntington, WV.

It was the Peggy-O reference that made me think of this show, and then when you see the first set ends in Scarlet>Fire. ..well, oh.. and get better Bolo from whatever ales you. Great to see you back, be good get or stay healthy.

Edit: Or it could be I am full of shit and think we are due for a '78. Either way, it's a win.

Bolo - it can be a bit restricting, having dizzy spells. I acquired them-with attendant feelings of nausea about 5 years ago. No one was quite sure why-possibilities included a reaction to prescription drugs, having low blood pressure and an imbalance in my ears. Nothing was decided, so I just carry on as I am. I find I am alright if I don't look down. So I don't.

And in regards to the west coast, You know the nearer your destination, The more you're slip slidin' away.

Hot tip on the 9/19/03 show... anybody got the SBD of this one out there?

It looks like that whole Dead tour was released on some limited edition Summer Getaway CDs, so I thought'd I'd check.

I've never listened to the Joan Osborne stuff, this show is sounding pretty dope and so naturally.. the SBD came to mind :) Some things never change in regard to collecting music.

Dug the 1983 yesterday and looks like some early 1973 for today, don't mind if I do.
Shipping notice received over here.

I'm afraid today's website glitches were probably my fault. As part of a rather complex NDA with my "employer," I am required to give them advance notice before I post on any website. In my compromised state of mind, I forgot to do so. I'd explain, but it's complicated. And dangerous.

In the unlikely event that anyone did a screen capture of my previous post, I strongly urge you to reboot your computer, change the locks on your door and stay away from the windows.

Also, I have the SBD of 9/19/2003 (WAV format) if you need it. Not sure how I would send that digitally - pretty big file.

Thanks for joining me on these one Jim, GOGD, Vguy and hopefully the rest of you. Gollum, you should be a fan of this show. Oroborous, I know you love this one.

This release really changed my view of releases. This is by far the most played Dave's Picks for me. Not saying it is the best ever, just the most played. Sound quality is A++. There are zero flaws in the entire release.
The Deal just kills it, so far my favorite China-Rider. The transition is unreal and I have not heard anything come close. Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Box of Rain! So many highlights. Love the HCS. Why did they retire this song and when did they retire it? Love the WRS prelude into eyes. Did that ever happen again? And such a great finish.

Yes, Jim, I sure hope we get more 73. Dave's 16 is killer, Scooby Doo, and Dave's 32 at the Spectrum is so good. Love the variety. That He's Gone, Truckin, into the Jam- Dark Star into Sing me back home is super special!

So let's hope they have more 73 in the Vault. So many good shows.

Be well and let me know where we are going next.

Yes, I surely do love 4/2/73 Deadvikes. I'm trying to keep up with the daily picks but have been dragging ass a bit this week. I'm still knee deep in Sunday's pick 2/11/70! I always avoided 2/11 because of the special guests. I guess I'm wary of outsiders. That's silly, of course, and it's just a great show. The whole Star-Spanish-Lovelight jam is sweet and meaty like a butt steak.

The three Spring 73 Dave's Picks are among my very favorites, too! I'd love it if we got some more 73 DaP's- maybe 8/1/73 or 9/11/73? I think those Dark Stars might be underrated because of sound quality (I dunno?).

I'm enjoying y'alls comments. Some day I'll catch up with you guys...

Sure do Love Spring '73

4/2/73 is solid top to bottom without a doubt. Really like when Phil still sung on Half-Step, even (especially?) when his voice is cracking (12/19/73 comes to mind as the standard to measure against), just ain't the same without that little bit of wonderful. Great great stuff here people. No complaints at all. Wave That Flag stuck out as it had me bobbin' along. And the Jam in Eyes that Jerry gets into at 14 minutes is the stuff I keep coming back for again and again and again.

No secret that PITB is an absolute favorite, possibly my #1 favorite, but def in the top 5. This one is great per usual.
But I had a flash yesterday on it's life cycle.

So you know how Dark Star had it's most epic versions from 1969-1970, IMO of course, I mean it's always great, but 1969-1970 those Stars are just universes of greatness, peak versions shall we say. It stays in the rotation, and is played great, but they're not 1969-1970 Stars. I'd say this is when Jerome was most excited about it, which makes all the difference to me.

Playing In The Band seems to have a similar life cycle in that regard and it's peak is arguably 1972-1973, again it stays in the rotation, and is played great, but they're not 1972-73 Playings (sp?). Anyhooo.. just wanted to say that cause that's what I was thinking about as I drifted through yet another magnificent PITB from '73.

Plus the coffee's kicking in and I don't really want to do the other stuff I should do today, so yeah I'm procrastinating.

And if you made it this far, congrats! You are a trouper.

That 2003 The Dead stuff was ringing my bell yesterday, those set lists had me at Born Cross-Eyed, another top 5 song for me.

What's on the haps for today?

PS - I probably wouldn't click on the RAW RAGE link below, that sounds a bit sketchy..
Spammers does anybody really go for that?

Interesting that people gravitate towards 4-2-73. I think the three Dave's picks from spring '73 are a really nice triad. Between them you have pretty much everything they were playing at the time.

You've got 3-28-73, Dave's Picks 16, affectionately known around these parts as Scooby Doo House. Recorded by Kidd, opening with a Cumberland -> Here Comes Sunshine, all the expected 1st set goodies, and a 43-minute Dark Star into Eyes deep in the second set. This recording doesn't sound as warm to me as Dave's Picks 21 - 4-2-73 at the Garden.

On this one Rex Jackson gets the credit for recording. Which is interesting since she and Betty were more or less a team during this period weren't they? maybe this accounts for the slightly warmer sound, which is generally attributed to Betty's recordings. This show has a great 1st set China-Rider and a fantastic 17 minute Playing in the Band to close out the 1st set. Set two has a nice slinky Mississippi, and the aforementioned Sunshine -> Jam -> Bobby McGee is unique as far as i know. The jam is a little dissonant for my tastes but no biggie. I believe this is the Eyes where garcia sings "There follows his wagon behind him thats loaded with kale".

Then comes my favorite of the bunch, Dave's 32. Both Rex and Kidd get the recording credit on this one, and it seems to me to fit right in between the previous two shows sonically. most of the 1st set is typical, but still very well played and the set has a great flow to it. I really dig the chorus like effect that Bobby was using on this tour - notably on Looks Like Rain. This show just seems to go on and on and the 3rd disc is special: He's Gone -> into a nearly 40 minute Truckin-> Dark Star (sans vocals) and then a Sing Me Back Home.

Just a fantastic show. The only thing this triptych is missing is a big Other One, which hopefully we'l lget soon in another Spring '73 release. This is my absolute favorite time for the band. Pig is gone, but i think that freed them up in a sense, and you can hear it in the playing, which is adventurous. And they have a ton of new material to learn and hone. I get it that some of the 1st sets are repetitive, but I usually just hone in on Bobby or Phil, who are always playing something unexpected. Bring on more '73. I'd love some more fall shows too, which might be a bit more complicated to release becasue of the guest horn players.

Well put slow dog. They are all great shows.. 4/2 has a little pixie dust mixed in with the mix, so it probably gets a little extra hype for that.

With the number of unreleased '74 shows just beginning to thin out.. 73 is going to come into the foreground eventually. I bet we get a good dose of 73 over the next year.. year and a half.

Well, this fall is the 40th anniversary, and we did get Warfield Acoustic last year which caused a lot of speculation about a Fall ‘80 Box.

Sign me up!

Conekid, yes, that has always been the hope for me after they started releasing the big box sets like E72, and the two Spring 1990 box sets, I thought it was only a matter of time. Here we are the 40th anniversary!

I know Glasser did not work on the June 76 Box, so I am hoping he was busy on something else??

And I have heard all the rumors, the tapes don't exist, they recorded over them after they released Dead Set and Reckoning, or For the Faithful. I think I still have my For the Faithful LP.
Anyway, I don't think that is true. Three reasons. They rereleased Dead Ahead with new bonus songs in the 2000s and expanded Dead Set and Reckoning in 2004 or 2007, can't remember the exact year, with all new bonus material from the run. So, there has to be something there.

Somebody knows around here.

I have had him pretty occupied doing roofing repairs on my house. But it's going to rain the next several days, so he should be back in the studio cranking out 1980 gems as far as I'm concerned!

It does seem odd, the 1980 dilemma. I guess it's mostly true, but man.. they didn't even keep the single reel masters? Something must left worth releasing in the tool shed.

Hi-Ya, chiming in on the 1980 stuff, in 2012 DL said the following:

“Recorded every show from Warfield & Radio City Music Hall to Multitrack. Unfortunately a lot of that was erased in the early 80s. Nonetheless there’s material there.”

A number of the Acoustic sets were part of the Betty Boards that were returned, I'm assuming those were two-track mixes though and not multi-track.

Not sure if there's any info about the wiping of the original tapes. If anybody has info on that story let me know.

In other news, looks like new DaP V35 might be arriving soon... fingers x'd.

And lastly 5/29 & 5/30/71 look kinda cool...

Those were general comments.. I have no facts to back them up. I just can't believe this there is nothing left on the shelves from those tours.

Lemieux.. if you listening, check in that unlabeled banana box in the back of the room with the Blues for Allah painting. We think you missed some reels.

Sounds like a winner to me. Cal Expo.

I am in the camp of hope for 1980. Time will tell.
Thanks for the information guys, this is better than the alternative.

GOGD, did you have a link for Dave's comments?

To bad they erased those tapes, I'm happy to hear that some survived. I'm. happy they released the 10/9/80 and 10/10/80 acoustic sets, I was at both those shows , so that might mean they still have the electric sets for those shows. Both those shows were killer shows, electric and acoustic , so hopefully the electric sets will we the light of day and be.released.

BTK: Yeah, so I think based on Dave's comments that some of the multi-track stuff still exists, some of it got wiped. And then there's also Betty's 2 Track mixes that exist, I think those are mostly acoustic sets, at least based on what circulates.
I'm tempted to go through both runs and gather my notes on what SBDs are in circulation and which aren't, but I'm thinking that's a pretty good representation of what exists and what doesn't in the vault.

DeadVikes: Yeah, here's a link to Dave talking about this on January 17th 2012 @ 33:48ish - http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/19834305

It's a good watch and pretty informative. I stumbled on it looking into the 1970 tapes in the Vault, and it did answer my question on that as well.

Unfortunately, he states that there are virtually no shows in the Vault from July 16 through December 1970, largely because of Owsley getting busted. I guess the Dead themselves were not running tape at all during this time. Might be old news for some, but I wanted to confirm it with my own ears.

Clever Deadhead and Photographer Bob Minkin also gave us a clue to this on Page 221 of his book Live Dead with a picture of the 1970 reels in the Vault, in the picture there's a huge gap of reels between 7/16/70 - 12/27/70 :(

Dang it.

The above totally coincides with the tapes that circulate, mostly what exists in circulation from that time frame are either Fillmore East Crew SBDs (partials), FM Broadcasts, or Audience recordings.

So, mystery solved? I'd still like a nice list of what's there and not, but yeah that might be my OCD.

Since we're all getting older here, I think some time should be put towards figuring out what else exists from the Festival Express and to try and get that stuff and get it out there. I know there's more of that than what circulates.

Unfortunately, I don't see any 1970 acoustic set stuff happening for American Beauty 50th, because it doesn't sound like it exists. Happy to be wrong.

Alright, well there you have it, and that's the way it is Tuesday August 4, Two Thousand and Twenty, I'll be away on assignment and Dan Rather will be sitting in here for the next few years.
