Grateful Dead

One of if not the best show I have seen!

Set 1-Jack Straw: good short 1st solo, very good 2d solo, smile -Sugaree: Jerry’s voice a little weak; 1st solo 1:36 – 4:00, slow and soft 1st run, next still delicate but pretty, faster next ones, very good; 2d solo 5:30 -9:02, Brent in the lead on organ, Jerry keeping the beat and eventually taking more of the lead, Bob adding color, real band effort, pretty hot; 3d solo 10:30 – 14:33, different tone from Jerry, richer & deeper, halfway through switches to higher tone, very good; VG version 16:50 total -MM Uncle: nice solo -Big River: good energy; good 1st solo; Brent takes the lead in the 2d solo, keyboards, 3d run of his is great; 3d solo Jerry playing fast, screechy 4th run is excellent, well done; good energy & tempo in the cowboy combo -Loser: solo 4:17- 5:40, haunting, very good; good emotion -Easy To Love: nice Brent solo -Minglewood: good 1st solo; 2d solo, Brent & Bob, then Jerry takes a nice final 2 runs; “T for NYC where the little girls know what to do” (you’re in Pitt Bob); VG version -Althea: note how great the vocals are (sound is SO clear); short 1st & 2d solos; 3d solo starts slow, heats up in the middle, very good; Jerry sings the “thinking a lot about less and less” verse before and after the 3d solo, so I think he missed a verse; VG version; 11:40 total -Music: little bit of a different intro, very hot jams, excellent set closer Set 2 -China Cat: Jerry’s voice definitely weak; starts to get hot in the middle of the solo; hint of Feeling Groovy during the nice jam -Rider: extended & excellent solo; nice peak in the headlight verse (good old Grateful Dead); Jerry takes 3 runs in the very good outro jam -LL Rain: good 1st solo; nice version though tough to excited about this song in set 2 -He’s Gone: excellent 1st solo; outro slow and pretty, lazy summer afternoon; VG version -Gloria Jam: outro of He’s gone changes into what I thought was a Last Time jam, but the Compendium corrects me, Brent adding great color, excellent jam -CC Rider: never one of my favorites but seems appropriate here; VG 1st solo is slow & soulful; 2d solo, Brent on the organ, 2 very good runs, then Bob (or is it Jerry takes a run), very high energy and Bob screams on return to vocals -Space: continuation of jam really, short -Drums: -NFA: interesting intro; Brent adding a lot; high energy; good jam -Black Peter: solo starts slow, picks up, Brent organ backing, heartfelt & mournful guitar playing, very good; nice buildup to “see here how everything” verse; short outro -Sugar Mag: good jam & energy, nothing special though -E: Saturday: send ‘em home with some rock & roll Overall: Really nice show, with a pretty hot 1st set (Sugaree, Music as the highlights), a very hot pre-drums 2d set (Rider, He’s Gone > Gloria jam > CC Rider are highlights) and a solid post-drums. VG show, 8.5/10.

Had a good nights sleep. Drove to the show via the Fort Pitt bridge/tunnel and was ready to go. Jack Straw had Mickey standing and pounding the drums. Sugaree went on and on and...Althea slow and methodical. Music Never Stopped finished an ok set. The band was cookin and hoped the second set wouldn't dissappoint. China > Rider smoked. Looks Like Rain started with drums and Jerry creating a thunderstorm. Love this version. The jam after Hes Gone is the dead as one and a highlight of my time seeing the group perform. CC Rider topped off the jam nicely. They were rockin'. NFA had a punch and Black Peter was soulful. Sugar Magnolia rounded out the perfect weekend. OMSN sent us home with Grateful Dead smiles that took a month to wash off. I used the Stanley shows to compare other runs for years to come. Not many came close.
