Day on the Green
Dead opening for The Who. Two legendary bands, no waiting.
First show
We drove all night up from UC Irvine...a van full of Deadheads... what a ride... what a great concert for my first
Great show, but a weird…
Great show, but a weird juxtaposition for sure.... Best memory is standing in line to get in. There was this guy, a socialist/revolutionary type, walking back and forth along the crowd line, proselytizing. He looked like Allan Ginsberg, with the dark beard disheveled hair, and wire-rimmed glasses... but wearing a white t-shirt, cut off jeans, and half-laced army combat boots. He had a "mister microphone" type unit, and as walked up and down the line he balanced the speaker on his head with one hand, while holding the mic in the other. He was yelling things like, "workers unite", "don't be suckered by the Dead, they're dirty capitalists, they're exploiting you". And the best line was, "Jerry Garcia doesn't give a shit about you"... it was hilarious! We had an extra ticket, and I told my friends, "let's give it to THIS dude". And I remember my one friend's wife saying, "he probably won't take it", after all the shit he was talking about the Dead. So the next time he came by us, I offered him the ticket. He stopped, looked at me through his coke-bottle glasses, said, Thanks, man!" , grabbed the ticket, and ran off towards the parking lot to stash his mister microphone before catching the show... SO CLASSIC!!!!!!!
First Time Dead concert
We were about 60 ft from the stage, just a bit to the left of center stage on the field. It was the most beautiful day, sun shining warm and the Dead started early in the day - and the crowd rose up and never sat down. It was dancing music right from the get-go. Could not help but move. the sound system was incredible. Massive speaker towers on each side of the stage, looked like custom speakers, no covers, made out of plywood. The sound was intense - cleanest concert sound ever, Jerry's guitar notes were like ice-picks cutting through, so clean - plenty of head room and dynamic range, every note crystal clear, and the finale, Johnny B Goode, was fantastic - the Who tried its own version of JBG and just did not cut it, but a worthy effort. First time ever, I had seen the 1st up out play, and out sound the headliner!
