In the Zone: Mickey Hart TV Doc Airing This Weekend

If your cable or satellite TV system carries the Documentary Channel, be sure to tune in on Saturday August 6 at 9 p.m. for an episode of the Bravo! Canada series Innovators in Music that is devoted entirely to Mickey Hart.

A couple of years ago, producer/director Daniel K. Berman brought a camera crew out to Mickey’s beautiful Sonoma County spread and spent a day capturing Mickey in his element: playing music in his percussion-filled studio/rehearsal space with fellow Global Drum Project brothers Zakir Hussain and Sikiru Adepoju; creating a eye-popping painting in his art studio; talking about his collection of miniature bonsai trees and the “found” redwood trunks he uses as percussion instruments; and talking about the “vibratory world” and his work creating music from electromagnetic waves emitted from different parts of the universe. As he tells Berman, “I love the noise in things.”

There’s no narration, no historical context. Instead it’s like we’ve suddenly been allowed to tag along for a day and watch Mickey do his thing. The music is sublime, as Mickey and his mates navigate through a sea of instruments, from African balafon to The Beam to talking drum to tabla to various electronic pads. And, as always, Mickey is extremely articulate in discussing how he creates his music and why the sounds of the cosmos have inspired him. What he is doing with his music (and his painting), he says in the show, is “expressing the unknown in a form you can share with someone.”

All in all, it’s a fascinating and compelling glimpse of Mickey’s magical world which should not be missed. Hopefully, one of these days, this and other episodes of the fine Innovators in Music series (including shows on Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Sonic Youth and others) will be released on DVD, but for now the only place to catch it is on TV. Highly recommended!

    what's up Doc?
Any possibility of an airing or licensing etc. to a broadcaster in Britain? A box set of the other artists in the series would be cool too. Steve Earle, Sonic Youth, Levon Helm, Mickey Hart? Abso-fucking-lutely!!!!!!!

I watched the doc on Levon Helm (another miss) before the Mickey Hart one, so I was already skeptical. If you didn't know who he was/is, this piece wouldn't help. He mentioned playing with The Grateful Dead. Was he a member of the band or a guest artist like Airto? The way it's casually tossed off, if you didn't know you couldn't tell. No narration other than Mickey rambling on about some current projects...all of which looked really interesting, but without much explanation or context. His musical partners (mentioned above) were never named. How long have they played together? Who would know? His painting "helpers" are his employees? Santa's? friends? homeless? Opening shot of the Sonoma coast, or so the caption read. Are we to assume he lives there? I guess. Don't get me wrong. I love Mickey and all of his Planet Drum stuff but this cinema verite offering was a waste of time. And the 5 minute NPR spot that Levon Helm did a while back was a helluva lot more informative than his segment. Bonsai!

...but I like that we didn't have to be spoon-fed info in a straight documentary style, for a change. It's just a glimpse, a look... And the musicians were credited at the end. I agree it would have been nice to credit them when they first turn up... I guess it presumes a certain level of knowledge. That's cool with me...

We could go around on this forever, but while we're talking documentaries, I have a question. After watching the Levon Helm piece we felt the urge to see The Last Waltz and I've always wondered why Garcia wasn't included. Was he asked? Did he decline? Considering all the shows the played together through the years, and they were at Winterland, and the Dead were not touring it just seemed like a natural. Any ideas?

Figure the wish list was long and needed extreme excising, There was a big time movie planned all along. The final guests were chosen for a more deeper relationship than concert billings.Joni & Neil, Canadian connection also superstars Muddy was the blues roots rep Diamond just recorded with Robbie Van is on Cahoots Hawkins was their first boss Dylan goes without saying.. Plus I could see the GD/Garcia balking at playing a tribute at that time.
