Enjoyed this show. Sound quality was decent. Nice Box of Rain, Sugaree, China Rider. That Half Step Truckin, Eyes, Stella Blue was pretty sweet. Nice Phil funk at the end of Truckin. Moving on to 2/22 next.

Let’s continue our primal stroll through the Pacific Northwest in early 1968. Dedicated to the memory of Dick Latvala, who showed that releasing early 1968 shows could be done, and done well……..

February 2: Probably just a fragment, but if there are only fragments, Lord let it be like this. Relatively short, sharp, intense Viola Lee followed by the very interesting CE/TOO/CE/Clementine/Schoolgirl sequence.

February 3: The following night features generous amounts of jamming and a decent dose of grease. Some things have not yet reached expansive lengths yet, but definitely still worth a listen…

The circulating Miller remasters are very nice and highly recommended. Are better quality, more complete recordings in those banana boxes? What are the obstacles? Release the reels!!!

It has been said that man is a rational animal. All my life I have been searching for evidence which could support this…..

Pick Of The Day: The Warehouse, New Orleans January 31, 1970

The events that begat Truckin’, a well known day in Grateful Dead lore. LOL the revolution is over, everybody go home, remember obedience to the law is the only true freedom. We know the history, but what of the music itself??

The Dead start off nicely with their own unique brand of electric enlightment, including a mid set Morning Dew, Mason’s, and a short but greasy Hard To Handle, after which a “severe technical problem” (Phil’s busted amp) prompts an impromptu acoustic set that is filled with nice oddball tunes such as Long Black Limousine, Seasons Of My Heart, Saw Mill, and Bound In Memories. Maybe not classic, but certainly interesting and worth a listen!

Bear travelled to these shows and we assume he recorded them. Are the reels in those still mysterious banana boxes???

Men who wish to know about the world must learn about it in its particular details…..

Sounds good to me.

Sorry I've been amiss. Struggling with time lately. Between my son playing HS basketball and balancing out surgeries for my folks back East I seem to be treading water just getting my work done. It's sort of put me in a music rut. Funny, you sometimes shun the one thing that can see you through. Spring '73 sounds good.

Edit: I guess it's really Winter '73. A very creative year for the boys.

. . . sounds good to me. Despite the fact I love 2/15 and 2/19 I don't really know these shows despite having listened to them at some point.

Oro I hope you don't think i was giving you a hard time. I was just surprised. Lord knows it's hard to keep up sometimes. Almost a full time job to give it all a dedicated listen. There's a lot of music out there!

POTD 2/21 & 22/73

How bout a double shot?
These are both on Dicks list of recommended 73s and I don’t think we’ve heard them here, at least I’ve never heard em.

BC, I’m sure I’ve missed some picks, GOGD I am not lol. (Even though he’s a stinking quitter; )
Perhaps part of the problem is when several of us toss several things out at once, or like your recent mention of some 72 stuff: we’re those picks, or just stuff for discussion/suggestion?
In those cases, say where four shows are brought up, I’ll mark the one or 2 things that others seemed to actually listened to and or commented on.
Like how I’ll mention something related to a days pick as a suggestion for furthur listening, but I wouldn’t call a “pick”

I’ve been trying to go through at least once a week and note the shows picked and who picked em in my Deadbase, but I don’t keep track of when etc. I’m sure there were times between GOGD and when I became more diligent about keeping track that I’ve missed, SLACKER! LOL

3/21/94: I need to discuss these shows sooner after I listen as I’ve already forgotten some of the nuances I wanted to discuss, yeeesshhk.
I thought this one had good energy for 94 or in general, though Eternity was a bit of a buzz kill. Didn’t used to mind that one so much but it’s shelf life might be coming up? Really dug the second set! I’ve always liked the rocking vibe of Picasso and how JG can rip it up sometimes even if I have no idea what it’s about lol. Cool Speedway, and I usually like a good Victim, though I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Sweet He’s Gone, great harmonies, lil jam into another trippy 90s rave space, followed by a a nice LL/Stella/LL samitch and a Liberty encore for some variety.

3/30/87: I’ve found these spring 87 shows more enjoyable then I recall?
I like the matrixes and this one didn’t seem too bad though I agree that some of them are not balanced so well. I think part of my weirdness with this tour stems from being there, and being disappointed because if certain expectations we had more than the music itself?
The way things were progressing vis a vis breaking out oldies and the old psychedelic energy, 87 was like a step backward (to us perhaps versus reality?) the jams were fewer/tamer, the vibe was much more dialed in, settled, and lacking that element of danger we were getting used to before the first health hiatus.
We had gotten the whole tour ticket package (perhaps for a discount?) though not intending to do the whole thing. Probably figured extra tix on tour are gold Jerry, gold i tell ya!
Whatevs, we did hit the first 8 but by Worcester I think a combination of burnout, tour colds, rapidly diminishing funds, and most of all, feeling underwhelmed? It’s all such a blur, don’t recall much of that spring or more so 86?
So we sold the Wooster tix, hindsight being 20/20 wish we’d gone… (think we got rid of Chi town and Jersey already?)

Anywho, my point being at the time we had a blast, dug the shows as always, but we’re a little disappointed.
So unfortunately, like many things, once I’d made a judgment that was that and I’d sorta wrote em off.
But through going furthur these most recent years I’ve grown to like them, even if not perhaps top shelf?
So This go round of 3/30/87 was quite enjoyable for a lazy day in the comfy chair.
Shakedown not the goat but no slouch and a good opener! Nice well played energetic songs with a good set list.
Second set builds up nicely, including another good He’s Gone. I believe it was this one that has Phil hitting these big single notes on the backside outro section. I remember it really stuck out and I was smiling etc.
Perhaps like much of 87 no really stand out stuff, just good clean safe tight GD! I’ve come to think of 87 as 77s younger cousin in that sense of the band really listening and playing consistent good clean music together as a unit, even if lacking the big jams and fireworks?
Anyway, glad I got it in abd hey, it’s got a Baby Blue ; )

Wish I would of continued with more music yesterday instead of more poorly played football.

I am at an impasse with some of the partially released 74 shows.. I think I need to reconstruct the full shows using pieces of the official releases and supplement any missing parts from the best available source.

What were they thinking???

9/10/74 Alexandra Palace finished

Already on the end of set one of 9/11/74, Playing just started...23 minutes to end the first set. Then a 41minute Phil & Ned where a big chunk is with the band before going into a great Eyes of the World into Wharf Rat... (44 minutes of Eyes and Wharf Rat) .. 108 minutes of jazzy, jammed pure 74 bliss. bob t

some of my favorite releases back in the day were the 1974 multi-show highlight releases, and of course same goes for DiP 4 Fillmore East. Still find them solid and very enjoyable. however - i definitely would like to see full show releases of those shows barring any significant reel issues.

Bluecrow Hat Trick - continuous deep listen to all three discs in a single release. much as I can ask for nowadays.

Always enjoyed his work, in and out of the Grateful Dead, all around, the faster we go the rounder we get. Rolling Thunder, Diga Rhythm Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Dead and Company. Prolific musician and workingman.
Excited about upgraded Betty Cantor recording of 2/18/71. Also when American Beauty was released my old friend Jimi tripped out on the lettering on the cover. Was the first person I remember to see “American Reality”. More than we ever dreamed it would become , reality.

To my ears, perhaps the best of the fall '73 mini tour with horns. Definitely worth a listen. Might not be the most popular release if it were to ever see the light of day, but well worth the listen. I am right there with BobT, an enjoyable and noteworthy show from an enjoyable and noteworthy tour.

I'm paying the 3 dollars and coming back for the next night!!

Agree, most of 91 decently recorded for the most part. Oft maligned, but not deservedly so. Bruce brought a lot of energy and in some ways brought Garcia back to life.

Keeping the 90’s alive

Since the CD-R case in my living room containing 90’s shows I burned more than 10 years ago is open, I tossed in 3-30-94.
The ScarletFirePlayingDarkStar is awesome and worthy of official release.

Nice pick. I'm not too familiar with this show. Well, it seems a couple folks on the archive claim this Dark Star is one of the greatest of all time. You never really know, do you?! I'm listening to a matrix now. The live music shutdown has given me a new appreciation for audience tapes.

Finished my third or fourth listen of this gem. I love how some releases seem to get better with each listen and this one fits that bill. The whole show rocks, so many highlights. As others have mentioned Disc 3 is very special. The He's Gone-Truckin-Jam-Dark Star into the final three songs are just awesome.

Yes, #32,#33 and #34 are pretty sweet. Looking forward to what Dave has in store for #36. Okay, my money is going with 72 or April 78.
