The Tour That Keeps On Giving: Here’s Europe ’72: Vol. 2!

Did you feel left out by all the hoopla surrounding the Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings mega-box? Or maybe you thought: “Geez, I don’t really need 22 shows on 73 discs in a box the size of a small refrigerator. But I sure did love the original Europe ’72 album back in the day. And now that you mention it, Hundred Year Hall, Steppin’ Out and the Rockin’ the Rhein became favorites of mine, too! It would be kinda cool to hear more from that tour.”

Well, it’s your lucky day, pal. We’ve got you covered! Ready for release on September 20 is Europe ’72: Vol. 2, a two-CD set featuring 20 newly mixed, never-before-released gems from that epic and historic tour. As most of you know, engineer Jeffrey Norman spent many months mixing down the 16-track master tapes from every show on the tour for the humongo-box, while mastering ace David Glasser put the final polish and brought the sonics up to HDCD specs. You may have heard various circulating soundboard tapes from these shows through the years, but trust us, you haven’t heard the music sound quite like this before! Meanwhile Grateful Dead vaultmeister and box producer David Lemieux was tasked with coming up with a two-disc compilation that would work as a worthy successor to the classic original album, 39 years later!

And there was this guiding philosophy: There would be no songs that appeared on the original 3-LP set. Whoa! No “Truckin’”? “Morning Dew”? “China Cat”? Nope! But what’s here is magnificent, including a spectacular, nearly hour-long combo of “Dark Star” > “The Other One” from the famous Bickershaw Festival in Engalnd (5/7/72); a kickin’ version of “Not Fade Away” > “Goin’ Down the Road” > “Not Fade Away” from the super-charged first night of the tour in London (4/7); and the always-moving “Sing Me Back Home” from the last night of the tour (5/26). There’s also a wonderfully varied selection of other tunes from Copenhagen, Paris, Frankfurt and Luxembourg, including favorites such as “Bertha,” “Playing in the Band,” “Good Lovin’,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Sugaree,” “Deal” and many more.

“One cool thing,” David Lemieux told us recently, “is that we ended up including several songs that the band had pulled from the master reels for the original Europe ’72, but which, for whatever reason, didn’t make the cut. That was really the impetus to get this thing rolling—that there was a lot of stuff on the cutting room floor that the band had slated for the original album at some point.” (You can find our entire interview with David here.)

Finally, we should note that the artwork on the album is by none other than Stanley Mouse who, along with his late partner Alton Kelley, created the memorable “Ice Cream Kid” and “Rainbow Foot” images for the original Europe ’72 package. Yep, it’s the return of the Kid! “Trouble comes in many flavors,” Mouse cryptically commented recently. “Ice Cream Kid is in hot water. The jury is out. His only defense is love.”

    Individual Shows
Just because they're offering this release, doen't necessarily mean they won't put out some individual shows from the E72 behemoth. There are always releases meant for record stores and casual fans along with the RT and DP releases. Maybe I'm a fool, but it seems to me they'll wait 6 months or so to try to sell as many full E72 sets as possible, and then release some individual shows. They've done all of the work, so why not make them available? Fingers crossed. Jeff VanderVeen "May the 4 winds blow you safely home."

I've always felt sorry for the "Ice Cream Kid," because of his poor dental hygiene. I wish Mr. Mouse would have supplied him a good oral surgeon before letting him grace the album cover again!

    Nice!
While you're at it, why not re-release Vol. 1 with the new remixes?

I never complain on these boards, but I can't resist this time. You guys have 22 new shows in HDCD specs, and you can't release some individual digi-packs? For God's sakes, put them up for download and let people give you $20, no mailing, no packaging, just pure profit! All the heavy lifting for Rhino is done, and we get a 2 disc compilation if you don't have $450? And, if any release deserves a bonus disc in order to order from Dead.net, it's THIS one..... 3 bucks cheaper on Amazon already for the same product. I'll still probably order this, but BOOO! Sincerely, Mark

As a long time GD collector and rabid fan, I will buy this, but will get it from Amazon for the cheaper price, then toss in a few bucks to get to 25, then no shipping. I was hoping a Bonus CD would be offered with this, strange that they have so much material no to offer one. I'm not complaining, got the full E72 box on the way. The box will have enough to keep me happy for a long time. This set of songs will be great for the casual fan, much cheaper too. Keep jamming! Coconut Phil, living Free.

Great release. But it would be nice to have a bonus disc for those that order at this site. Amazon is cheaper. I'd love to see one more disc of great unreleased songs included.

...because I have ordered the E72 box set. However, the selections on this release are great, and well sequenced. Thank you very much! However, I would like to see all 22 shows from this Europe be released individually for a nice price each and then add mailing charges. Again, thank you very much for this release.

The original was always my favorite. I received it as a bday gift and oh what a gift it was. I love the drippy reverb they used back then and clean guitar tones. Any thanks for the release. Its a fair price and I have to buy the original because ramble rose skips but its worth it. It would be cool if all past bonus discs were available for down load. (just a thought) Its cool that you will be releasing it on vinyl. I will get a turn table when I get my man cave one day. peace

As a twenty year old college student I watched with quite a bit of depression as the E72 box set sold out without having any possible way of affording the 450 dollar price tag. Even though its only twenty songs, I'm really happy that I can still have a taste of what I'll never be able to have.

On vinyl, even though I am getting the big E72 box. Looking forward to it, in fact. The original Europe 72 album was not my first Dead album, but it was definitely my gateway record to Deadheaddom (Deadheadism? Deadheadishness? Da Bus?). A companion vinyl (180 g audiophile?) album to flesh out that original experience would be quite nice!

Anything from 72 is a welcome treat. 72 is so full of mind blowing Dead goodness that box set, single CD, double CD, etc. is a cause for celebration. Now about that 90 spring tour box....;) Having seen the boys whip up the magic on and off from 87 to 94, I am just pleased as punch that enough of us crazy heads are still grooving to this music and that the remastering sounds so sweet! Take care all, see some of you down in Eugene!

The illustration with the chopper is pretty good but the illustration of the "ice cream kid" holding the volume 2 sign just looks a little half-baked and rushed. His face and hair in the "vol. 2" illustration make him look like a simplified and generic approximation of the original character. It seems that a little more effort was made and personality is apparent in the "ice cream kid" on the motorcycle. I really hope they use the motorcycle for the front art.

A lot of people are asking for these, and my guess is that we'll see them, but not until the box sets are sold out. There's no reason why they wouldn't release them in that form, but I think they'll only choose a handful of shows for individual release, because they might otherwise end up with a lot of unsold inventory. I do think these shows should eventually be sold by download.

I HAD a reservation for a customized box... but not $450 (OUCH! and I would have spent it on this in a HARTBEAT!!!). I WILL buy ALL shows if/when they are available individually (or if you can tell me how long I have to save up $450 on a budget of a couple hundred bucks a month...). PLEASE RELEASE THE INDIVIDUAL SHOWS, ALL OF THEM, NOT ONLY MAIL ORDER, BUT IN STORES AS WELL!! I will BUY (or beg or steal, have no doubt about that...) the entire box (or download it in flac for free, but I'd RATHER BUY IT AND GIVE YOU THE MONEY!). SO...? Still sucks that I had to lose my personalized reservation, and, of course, no one would miracle me, or loan me the money (or I would have bought two and sold one...), alas... THIS IS THE ONLY THING I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IN RETIREMENT, GREAT HEADPHONES AND GRATEFUL DEAD! ESPECIALLY the Europe '72 Tour (the Paris shows are FINE!!! Great atmosphere). Let us (or me) know, peace! Mary, please email me if I have any other options, Legion of Mary, for sure! PEACE.

Ditto on the vinyl. I recently started listening again to vinyl and one of the albums which most astonished me when compared to the CD was Europe 72. Especially, Truckin.

Just add me to the list of kvetches that is very disappointed that you would charge more than Amazon.com with no bonus disc offiered. I have every studio release and all boxed sets (save the E72 box, which was hard to justify economically -- but great idea, really) + all DP & RT releases. I even have the entire Download series in flac. I even buy the releases that I already have from Soundboard bootlegs. Add all the JG labels to that. I am a loyal fan. This feels like a slap in the face. The CD itself is almost worth it just for another version of Chinatown Shuffle, a fairly rare release of the song. But I think I'll go with Amazon this time unless there's a change in policy/price in the next few days.

I preordered one on Amazon for 13.50, that was a few weeks ago, you get whatever the lowest price is and it has been going up and down. I may cancel it, I have the original ,both versions toboot. I liked "100 Year Hall", didn't like the "Steppin Out CD from 72", I don't know yet, The whole project looks so piecemeal, but I expect incredible results. Just got the Europe 72 personalized trunk in the mail today. Scored number 1814 with a personalization of "Before My Time" since I was born in '74. It is a sharp looking boxset. It came with a 100 page hardback book about the tour, recording process and a reprint of the Book of Dead in paperback from 72. Just but disc 1 in from 4/7/72 and it sounds great. Unfortunately this disc is not tagged with recording artists and track titles when I put into the computer (daughter is gearing up for bed so she is watching TV where the stereo is, where it doesn't matter in the end). The show sounds fantastic! The artwork is superb and each essay is written on the gatefold of the CD as far as I can tell (haven't pulled all 22 out yet). There are also photos in some of the gatefolds. Great piece, you won't be disappointed with whatever addition/version you go with. It sounds fantastic.

Hey Now. I'm really glad the boys are releasing the entire Europe '72 tour as a box set. Unfortunately, for many folks like me, coming up with $450 on the spot for the entire box isn't doable. In my case, I'm disabled. I can afford to pay to download a show or two a month - but not the entire box in one fell swoop. In light of this, I urge the band and its distributor - in the strongest possible terms - to make the individual shows available as downloads (and, if possible, individual cd releases). Thank you.

I, for one, would LOVE/have loved to see Dead/Rhino come out w/ a special USB drive of the tour (similar to what The Beatles did when they re-released their catalog back in 2009). You would literally have to navigate from show-to-show from the tour map. Sigh. Ok I'm done... I'm happy with what we have. Thanks again everyone.

Got the package today and listened to the first disc, or the songs I liked anyway, I am a diehard Dead fan, especially of 72-79, I was a bit disappointed by the overall sound quality of Part 2 for what I have heard so far, Definitely not nearly as good as Rhino's 03 remaster of the original, which was overdubbed. Wish the packaging was better, but I am not complaining, paid 9.25 on Amazon for 3 hours of music. Seems like every song is different quality as it should be, from different venues. I don't know if the tapes were rough or what happened, I mean, it is muddy at times, Sometimes you can't hear stuff. I see why the first version was overdubbed, the vocals on alot of songs are not great, but the emotion is there. Well, I am not going to say anything else til I listen more , Remember, this is just my opinion, still glad that I have it, I was just expecting better sound quality.

packaging seems to be cheap, artwork is upside down on the 2nd and 3rd panels compared to the front panel. Is this intentional or a mistake? There is no printing on the inside of the cd case and no liner notes..first cd sounds great, like the set list.second cd with the dark star, drums, the other one combo is fantastic ....

I had the same questions as markonin. Is the packaging a throwback to the original vinyl or something? The pic on the back and the songlists are upside down, and the inner-panels of the tri-fold are completely blank. Is it supposed to be like that? I've only had one listen so far, but I'm loving it. Thanks!

This is designed to look like the original Europe'72 LP release from Nov 1972. There is also a booket inside the back (3rd) cd sleeve with color pictures, much like the original 4 page booket. It's a nice 2 CD set for the car. Enjoy !

More that I listen to this compilation on my older deck, I am really enjoying it. The second disc sounds great. "Sing Me Back Home" is just a classic, and probably my fave NFA/GDTRFB jam, really a good one. I'm liking the new Cd company that they are using. And only rip I have had was originally opening it, I ripped a corner of the cardboard.Learning the squeeze technique for pulling out the discs.

Nice song selections...the 2nd disk is the highlight (a 1972 Other One is always a treat)!! It seems to me that Pigpen's organ sounds louder and Keith's piano is softer than Europe 72 Vol.1. I'm quite happy with this release...thanks to those who made it possible.

For those of you who complain about packaging, The ice cream kid cover art, the $450 price tag for the E72 box, E72 Vol2, compilations, or complete show/tour releases from this tour or any other, I have one thing to say to you: QUIT YOUR BITCHIN! As Deadheads, we are the luckiest fans on the planet....Name 1 other band (rock and roll or otherwise) that has a vault from which to draw almost their entire recording history.... and not only that, but to be able to convert their shows to HDCD, etc, it's practically unheard of. Thank the Lord they had the presence of mind and cutting edge recording devices back then (16 track) to capture it all. My personal and heartfelt thanks to Jeffrey Norman, David Lemieux, Rhino, and of course Bobby, Mickey, Phil, & Billy for all the great releases over the years! So thankful for you guys, and oh yeah, thankful that THEY'RE STILL TOURING!!!! 46 years so far!! Forever Grateful, Salmon Will
