Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville??     Nice show Deadvikes. Nothing mind blowing but a good solid 87 outing. Always enjoy Pocky Way, and Candyman too. We got an Esau in there which some don’t get, but I always liked it because it was an unusual song and a change of pace. Bird Song and TMNS to round out the first. Loved the Maggie’s>>Cumberland. Don’t think I’ve heard that combo? Don’t think I’ve heard them do Maggie’s with just JG and Bob either? I’m Used to the big 4 vocal versions post Brent. So yeah their taking it higher untiiilllll ittttt comesss backkk downnnn with LL Rain, meh,... nice solid Terrapin with JG steady and confident, not a sizzler but we’ll played. Yes after that it’s sort status quo time to bring it home, but enjoyed Stella, and Quinn is a nice alternative to the more usual encores. All in all I nice little show.
    As far as Ultramatrix, some seem a little dull sounding to me, some too metally, or I guess that could just as well be the metal tape?, but for this show the one I listened to I thought was really good. Personally I’ll take a good matrix over a SB any day, cause sorry folks but a dry SB feed is not what it sounded like live! To me some of the old stuff folks go on about I think are hard to listen to, especially the vocals and often the bass.
    But of course compared to most Audi’s back then the SBs are a step up, and though I’m a audiophile, I’ll take a hot show via a lesser recording than a perfectly sounding dud, but that’s just me. I guess I’ve never really been a “taper” and I don’t mean necessarily someone who actually tapes. To me it’s always been sort of a click, a club, a cultural thing. And I think their mentality has sometimes biased things in a limiting way, again, that’s just me. I love Dave, and think he does a great job, but he suffers from this bias too. Sorry, not trying to be negative and didn’t mean to ramble, just say I prefer a good matrix. Although nothing beats a multitrack from most any era!
    I wonder if ULTRAMATRIX is named somehow due to the Dead/Ultra Sound relationship. Don Pearson was I believe the Meyers Ultra Sound representative with the Dead who worked closely with Healy to tweak the system etc. So I’m curious if these new Pearson matrix’s we’ve been seeing are ones he perhaps took care of some of the tape mix while Dan did his thing, or are they separate some how from Healys normal feed/mix? Definitely would love to know more about all this!
    Ok, Summers here and the time is right for some 85 Dancin’ in the streets! Woo-hoo, of to Alpine!

    Fun to watch yesterdays show as well as listen to it.
    Watched VFTV III for the first part of Set 1 & YouTube for the rest.

    I'd say it's a good show, but not great.
    They lost me with the 2nd set LLR and for me it felt pretty routine after that.

    Much better stuff earlier in the year ;)

    It might've also been that I'd listened to 8/3/02 The Other Ones for the first time earlier in the day.
    That was pretty far out!

    It makes you think what could've been..

    Speaking of LLR, 6/21/85 is playing over here and we've got a Set 1 LLR > Day Job closer. Uhh...

    Fortunately I know that Estimated is a smoker, can't really remember the rest, and therefore I will relisten.

    BTW any ideas on that there BOLO Contest?

    Minus the plagiarized lines from Raiders, I've got nothing.

    Hiya

    DEADVIKES - Lots to see & hear in 1987.
    The ULTRAMATRIX are essentially matrix tapes that Dan Healy made. Healy would record the crowd / ambience and blend that in with the SBD feed to create a more live sound. He was experimenting with it for awhile, but 1987 seems to be when he focused (exclusively?) on it, could be wrong on that. So most of the Tapes from the time period he was doing this, sound like a matrix tape with audience noise (sometimes way too much) and are called ULTRAMATRIX or ULTRAMIX.

    The Spring Tour of '87 unfortunately, appears to be when Healy was figuring out how much of this ambience he wanted on the tape, and IMO those tapes tend to have too much ambience making them sound more like an Audience recording than the '85 crystal clear SBDs we'd come accustom to.

    I was super stoked after Spring '87 shows to get the tapes, I wanted a dope SBD of those shows so I could see if what I thought I saw was amazing as I felt it was. So I waited and waited and waited. Never could find one, instead I had what sounded like a pretty good audience tape. Turns out it was a muddy transfer of Healy's ULTRAMATRIX recordings and the crystal clear SBD never appeared. In 2017-2019 Charlie Miller started to post some Upgrades of the ULTRAMATRIX cassette masters from I believe Joani Walker. Hopefully there's some even better transfers brewing in the Don Pearson stash that have been trickling out, I guess we'll see.

    Some love em, some hate em.. yada yada. I'm still curious about whether or not in cases where what circulates is an UltraMatrix if there is also a "clean" SBD tape as well in the Vault. It would appear that the answer would be "sometimes". For example 3/26/87 what circulates is the Healy ULTRAMATRIX but there appears to also be a straight SBD of this show, which Dave L. played on Taper's Section (BTW it was DL's first show & a Charlie Miller Fave and worth checking out!). I'd love to find out that the Vault has "clean" SBDs of all these shows in addition to the ULTRAMATRIX that circulate, but I think that's probably not the case, or we'd have heard more. It's possible though, and it's probably more of a case of they have some but not all. I guess time will tell if we live long enough.

    I've been trying to find out since '87 so yeah, don't hold your breath.

    Can anybody explain what an ultra matrix recording is? I am familiar matrix recordings (Dave's #8).

    Time to do some more research on 87. A lot to offer. Don't think we will ever see an 87 Dave's Picks release, but man, it would be cool.

    I was unaware that a shirtless Jerry photo might be a rare thing, especially since lots of folks carried cameras for those outdoor shows back then.

    So, here's the contest: come on over to my house, garage, attic or perhaps my storage unit. Whoever finds the photograph can keep it.

    One caveat: you know the warehouse scene at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark"? Yeah, its kinda like that. Good luck!

    10/10/76 yesterday and 10/3/87 today.
    Another great 76 that was put in perspective from that interesting post about DOG and specifically The Who/Dead shows. (Thanks for that GOGD) But now we REALLY need Bolos pics!
    Personally these shows, and this release, just rose in status. Not only cause it’s sum good sheet mon, but because they BROUGHT it even though it sounds like they were dealing with three main things R&R bands hate:
    - getting up and playing early
    - an empty venue
    - opening for another bands fans who aren’t interested etc

    Dead Workingmen indeed! Not only that, they stick around and party, with JG dancin topless. Many bands would have been whiney beeatches, played short and shity, and took there toys and went home. No these boys were true professionals. Sure they probably were compensated well, and helps the ole BGP relationship, and they might even have asked to play first, considering Monterey. I’m sure there were plenty of heads there, and it was a nearby home show, but still, the level of playing and energy on these fine shows are only enhanced by the fact that they did so in spite of the situation. Cudos to all on a fine release. Can’t believe it took me so long to grab this one...Man I dig 76 more and more!
    10/10 was another fine show, and I dug the space. That’s a couple times now I’ve been pleasantly surprised by a 76 space! Love the 1st set Dancin>>Wharf Rat>>Dancin, had to check, thought it was into the second set and I missed something, lol. Overall though, I think I prefer 10/9 just because I’m a sucker for those awesome, tight, segways ala 7/18/76. If I didn’t have such a good CD FM? original source? copy of 7/18/76 that I got on amazon?, anyway, if I didn’t have such a good copy I’d be lobbying non stop, as that show has been a WTF since way back when. It was one of my first tapes back in 77, and being a relatively low gen FM, it was probably one of my early tapes that really sounded good. Yeah that ones a beast, but I digress.
    So, onto 10/3/87 today from the wonderful month of rocktober. I believe theres YouTube video of it so maybe I’ll wait and watch it tonight on the big screen? If not, that matrix vguy dialed up looks good. Hell maybe I’ll end up doing both ; )

I've always enjoyed hearing what was happening in 1989 and dig it.

Nice recap OB, fun times!
I especially liked the line - "the dream is weakening".
LOL at that as I peaked at the post drums set list and saw the death of a dream there.

And I second VGuy that 10/25/89 show is killer, it's the Light before the Dark. Kinda cool that they were using that PITB > UJB > PITB as a vehicle during the Dark Star breakouts. And I mentioned this before but the Set List Heads must've been holding their breath after that sequence on 10/25.

5/26/72 deserves big praise and accolades. Top 10 show?
I'd go into it, but it's Monday and too much to do. The only Set 1 NFA > GDTRFB > NFA, and hearing the crowd get it started is a real treat. And... Is this the first PITB that goes outside of the 7/4 realm, based on what I was reading in the Taper's Compendium they're saying yes. That's Huge! This is quintessential Europe 72 literally.

And, '78 has been on my radar since the DaP V37 announcement.
Yesterday stumbled into 1/11/78, what a ripper.

.....i hear ya. Saturdays high here in Vegas was 88 degrees. Todays high? 58. 30 degree swing in 2 days.
Checked out Miami 10.25.89 yesterday. Never heard it before and it was pretty spectacular. 10.26.89 today.

I've been collecting their music for many years now and just love this band and their variety. There are a lot of good folks posting on here. It's generally a positive place to hang out and needed in these days.

10/25, it was a Wednesday, a beautiful fall day in south Florida, we drove down from Orlando and arrived at the Arena about 5:00 in the afternoon. By this time, the weather had turned to partly cloudy to cloudy with a bit of a breeze, still a beautiful day in the mid eighties. As we navigated about and felt around to find out way inside, the security was tight, they were searching everyone and taking away any and all party favors that they found and just threw them into a large grey trash can, which was getting quite full by the time we got to the pat down area. We had brought some shrooms with us from out favorite field that we had picked the weekend before the show, which was rare as usually in Florida about this time the shrooms fields kinda dried up by end of September. It was a rainy season and we were still picking by mid October. The picking was sparse, but very potent yields as was usually the case from this particular field.
Back at the pat down area, we saw as we approached that there was no way we were going to get the shrooms into the arena, so we consumed them right there in line, to the delight of some deadhead onlookers, who wished they had some, but alas, we only had just enough.
Entering the arena, it was our first time visiting the house of the Miami Heat, and found it very well laid out, with short lines for the numerous concession stands and long lines for the less than enough restrooms. We get to our seats, which this night was just to the right of Jerry and up about 25 rows. A great seat for sure.
Then the shrooms started to take hold, the sets starts with Hell in a Bucket, not one of my favorites but it gets us going into Sugaree, a good version from my notes altho by this time, the shrooms had me sitting way back in my seat. I don't recall much from the rest of the set, although I so remember a trippy Picasso moon right before an awesome Deal to close out the set.
The lights come up for the set break and according to my notes from that day, I was off as it looks like a series of scratching's and doodles until the lights finally go out, a big smiley face on the note page. Then, the second set starts off with Playin in the band, which runs into Uncle John's band back into playing. Wow, then a beautiful reading of Standing on the Moon from Jerry and I could relate, looking down from our 25th or so row seat, we were literally above the band and looking down from space, awesome. Trucking takes us into drums>space, more doodles on the note pad then Gimme some loving which had us all up dancing. This slid into a beautiful Wharf Rat which is one on my favorites. No more notes on the pad as the end of the show was a dance fest, with sugar mag and US blues ending the show. Back thru the maze of faces and bodies to the car and off to our hotel room, where we partied until dawn. If it wasn't for the notes I took, I would not have remembered any of the nights festivities due to the shrooms.
10/26, got a late start as laid in bed until the maid came and asked us if the room needed cleaning, we said "no" and decided to get up and head out for some breakfast, in the mid afternoon. Feeling a bit spacey from the night before and with no party favors to take us into the night we just hung out until about 6 pm a deadhead in a long trench coat approaches our little group and opens his coat to reveal t shirts and stickers and other paraphernalia, we weren't buying until I asked about doses and he said "Blue Unicorns" Score. Finally they open the doors and we get past pat down area with no problems and into the arena we sail again for the final night of the tour. It's Thursday and not as warm as the night before, a breeze blows from the ocean and it feels a bit like fall.
We are all hoping for a blow out show due to it being the last show of the tour and we were not denied, a truly remarkable experience was about to unfold before our very eyes. Again, we had great seats, mid floor, about half way back.
The night starts out with Foolish Heart, again, a favorite of mine and Jerry stretches' it out a bit at the end to everyone's delight, oh boy, Jerry's on. Notebook is blank so can't remember the next song but I do remember Stagger Lee with Jerry's voice starting to crumble, a couple Bobby cowboy songs and then Jerry again slurring his words thru Brown Eyed Women, a great version even with Jerry's voice starting to sound like as Blair Jackson put it "he had gargled with razor blades". Here's were it starts to get a bit dark, Victim or the Crime is next with Bobby singing like it's the end or the world, some real spacey sounds coming from Brent and Jerry into a mean Don't ease me in with Brent again taking it to the max as he slams the keyboards over and over again during the song. My notebook has Don't ease in big letters and it was a great version.
The lights come up again blinding us all as the unicorns had started to take hold by this time and I just wanted the lights to go out, as they were very bright it seemed.
We're off by now and the second set starts with a trippy Estimated Prophet into a Blow away that again has Brent taking it to the max, a great night for him. Then the first notes of Dark Star, the crown goes nuts, it was my first and only dark star and the notebook is now empty of any notes. It was dark, a very dark dark star, unbelievable sounds coming from everyone, Mickey and Billy banging on the stage to make a sound like stars exploding or comets coming apart at the seams, very cool, Mickey using the Beam throughout the entire suite, not as the main instrument, but as a side note, hitting and plucking and stroking the strings like some kind of devilish harp from beyond the grave. Truly amazing. The wheel comes out of space and it is the light at the end of the tunnel, a slow teasing by Jerry until it finally erupts into it's magnificent colorful spinning prism. Then another dark turn with All along the Watchtower, into a beautifully dark Stella. Jerry leaves nothing behind with this performance and I/we are spellbound. NFA finishes us off and tries to bring us all back from the dark reaches of space but it is a little late for that. Then the encore as they all stand on the end of the stage and sign us a beautiful we bid you goodnight.
Again, wow, spent the rest of the night talking about the masterpiece of psychedelia we had just witnessed, wishing we had a tape of the evenings performance right then. The drive home the next day was surreal almost dream like as I could not get the previous evenings magic out of my head, where it stayed for several days, mind truly blown.
Starting in 85, I had started to take notes of song selections and other occurrences and performance notes from the evenings festivities at Dead shows, so glad I took notes this weekend, or I would not remember as much as this, but I wrote it all down, not knowing that one day I would again read about a legendary night in Dead history.

Ran through 10/22&23/89 yesterday and made it 2/3 of 10/26. So 2 goals and an assist, not a pure DHB hatrick.
Will give 10/26 a proper listen when time allows.
Will give 22&23 a few more runs before I review...initial thoughts are 22 meh, 23 good....
Really looking forward to 10/25/89 as I’ve never heard it and it got the vguy thumbs up so.....

Ok, have to try and find the damn Buffalo Hyde Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Was in the mood for a nice Scarlet Fire this morning for a quick palate cleanse.. so I hit the Spectrum '84, then read Billy's 84 BCT comment and am continuing down this rabbit hole for a bit.

As we entered the turnstiles in the Zenith, our tickets where ripped and the next person placed squares in our hands. TV Screen Turbulence show from there on out as I had already partaken of some outside along with some wine and baguettes. The China>Rider is superb and a nice Crazy>Playin' - First Set was well played with nice song selection. Standing in the pouring rain the next day for tix's for the added night was not the most fun I had on this trip but another strong night.

How could I forget that? Loved that show on cassette and when I read the 30 Trips announcement was super psyched (still a usable word) that 10-27-79 was picked.
So now, do I jump shows, or stay where I’m at?
Think I’ll save 10-27-79 for Friday when I can really get tuned in.

Well, it has arrived at the beer store I frequent.
I grabbed Pseudo Sue since I like Pale Ale.
Pretty tasty. Similar to a local brewery here, but several $’s cheaper.
Will grab some other flavors nest time at the store.

Another one that we have starting getting is GFJ IPA from Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis. It's also very tasty!!!

Scores! Didn’t end up having to go out in the cold yesterday and had no pressing honey dos, so went hard on 10/22&23/89, in fact had such an enjoyable day, including basking in the toasty afternoon sun while only 24 outside, that I broke regulation and had a couple weekday beers! But I’m gettin ahead of myself, so on to Charlotte.

Have never heard these shows so was curious to hear them. Charlotte seems to be one of these off the grid venues, but repeatedly I’ve been pleased and surprised if and when I make the electronic journey there. And these were no different.

The sneaky chameleon tour continues. This show is a prime example of this both on paper, and after first time listen: it might not seem like much at first, but upon further review it shows its true colors!
Both times I listened to this I loved the first set. Like much of this tour they come out energetic but not manic, with spirited versions of Touch O and Minglewood, 2nd of 2 on the tour. Followed by a decent Half Step, the 2nd of only 2 on the tour, with a good Queen Jane, another 2 of only 2, Ramble On Rose 2/2, and an always fun BIODTL, the only version this tour, and only the 2nd of 3 for the year, with the previous being on 2/12/89! Another good spacey/midi Birdsong (for good or for ill depending on how your pleasure tends?) A spirited JBG closes the set out, only the 5th of 6 for the year and a nice first set closing change up.
So we see again that below the surface lies more. This has been a reoccurrence on this tour totally facilitated by multiple listens of the tour in order. Very enlightening.

Set 2 perhaps even more so...after first time I was nonplussed. It had moments, and it had moments, the kind that might negate box use? Blow Away being the main culprit, or is it? It is a bit raggedy, and like other Brent tunes especially on this tour it has a energy? not dark but...and the drum triggered whips are almost disconcerting lol..
Brent even slipped some comments in that lead me to think maybe this was when his personal shit was going on? It’s a subtle thing, and I love Brent, but he seems a bit off this tour after his fine performances on both 89 summer tour and spring 90?
Here again we have the slightly truncated version of Blow Away, but he does rant a little. The crowd loves it and on second run I had a better take...still feels like weird energy, tad sloppy, another subtle, occasional (sort of west coast like) underlying vibe on this tour.
As others have mentioned, this tour sometimes evokes a strange character or vibe. More chameleon: mostly tight, but still loose and because of the exploratory factor, occasional misses compared to spring 90 perfection. Relaxed and sometimes mellow, but with a dark edge, the Dark Star whirls on it’s axis...the psychedelic gods woke from their crips via electronic wavelengths of midi summonses...
Second of two Samsons, was decent, with only the fourth Help-Slips-Franks since reintroduction, and a rare pre drums slot, that works well with integration into the weirdness zone. Though I thoroughly enjoyed this outing, I think I’d give the nod to earlier versions though. A status quo Miracle in it’s usual wake em up after driftin’ and dreaming through another faux psychedelic star ride, but alas, no big ticket items this go round. JG does give us a sweet Stella though, and the 1-2 Stones/NFA knockout to send em home eager for tomorrow’s show! Hold on, still have an encore folks and they've sometimes been huge this tour, but “only” a nice Black Muddy River tonight, which only adds to the vibe for 10/23. Overall a fine show, if sneaky and chameleon like on the surface...great song variety/sequencing this tour, with many 2 of only 2s this show. ok, hang it up and see what tomorrow brings!

Another sneaky Pete. Yes there’s a couple items on the big list, but overall you have to dig a bit to find some of the gold. More great variety with over a half dozen 2 of only 2s, a couple 2 of 3, including a biggie, 3 3 of only 3s, a nice once only, and of course the big Attics 3rd of only 3 on both the tour and since 10/28/72!
So the big second of only 2 ever California Earthquake outta the gate and another beauty it is! Perhaps not quite the emotional impact of Philly, but that might just be bias? Next another great 89 Stranger, though not as good as “thee” Stranger from Hampton which I believed was released on that great sounding live Without a Net album...but this ones fine and only the 3rd of three on the tour. Interestingly, the other 2 times they broke out DS....would it continue?
Next a phenomenal Loser, another 2 of 2, until the hiccup during reentry, but it’s slight, and both the crowd abd I don’t care ; ) Weir with the dialed in Walkin’ Blues that energy wise is a bit of a let down in the overall flow, though a decent enough version. After a little futzin around, JG comes back with an upbeat nicely odd mid set Bertha! (2 of 2)
Good Masterpiece, Jed and Let It Grow to end another fine first set. Have really enjoyed many of the first sets this tour so far. First sets during some periods were unfortunately sorta throw away, but thankfully not here!

Touch O for decent upbeat opener, followed by second of two tour Looks Like Rain and a nice status quo version here. Then another rumble strip that was more noticeable the first time: We Can Run in a slightly unusual mid second set slot, and again not Brents best version, but Phil and Jerry really step up the backups and keep it moving and decent. Though there are occasional songs on this tour let might not be perfect, being multi-track and given the full Normin, I bet they’d clean up nicely! Like I’ve always wondered but never did the leg work with the Hey Jude from Hamilton. Remember it being emotional but Brent sounded ruff at the show, but the box release sounds fine? Meaning I should compare the box to the tape etc? There are certainly limits, but they can do wonders now: Winterland 74 different mixes, and many Donna tracks on multitrack versus only stereo come to mind. But I digress.
Now we come to one of those under the radar fun facts with JG giving 2 DBL Dbls in the second set. The first here with a sweet Crazy Fingers, 2 of only 2, then nice Terrapin. (3/3) which also lends itself to the psychedelic slide into the weird zone. We come out the other side with I Will Take You Home in its usual help the high people back to the ground spot, and it’s decent but perhaps still not full potential comparatively? No worries as they break out a spirited GDTRFB, this being it’s only tour appearance and the crowd appreciates it. But JGs not done yet with the second DBl/Dbl and second of only three Standing On the Moons and like other versions, he really seems to be confirming his decision to change his life and “rather be here with you”! and the crowd sends the love and appreciation right back at em.
So again, those with dreams of glory are starting to squelch them, though I’m guessing these feelings were underlying at this point given the great performance they were experiencing. Lovelight puts the exclamation point on it all though, with only the encore left....and alas, they finally bring the bling with another beautiful offering of only the third of three Attics on not just the tour, but since 10/28/72! And like most of the big moments on this tour, they deliver, something in the past not always the case lol.
Yes this show has a couple of on paper big ticket items combing to make the bread for the sandwich, but after digging in to the middle ingredients, the rest is just as tasty! Another fine show! I would say both of these would work nicely as part of our fantasy league tour box, but suppose one could get the ax if truly necessary? I just wouldn’t want to be the one picking...it might be easy to go for the second show on just a glance, but after listening I don’t think it’s that cut and dry? So why not give us both, if only because of the multitrack auditory ecstasy which would surely cover and make up for the occasional foibles...

To include both would give us 6 shows in our box so far. Though I’ve never heard 10/25 yet, I’m gonna throw it in there, yuck, yuck, simply based on vguy and other 👍. That would give us 7 shows, with my proposal of 9/29/89 for the first lucky “x” thousand purchasers, as a carrot generating bonus show, or at least the second set...

Thus we would have the following interesting, different, multitrack sudo psychedelic glory of this fine and deserving 89 fall tour:

10/16/89 Nightfall of Diamonds release

Love this show, or the partial release of Dick's #24. It is 74, Wall of Sound and yes, it is spectacular! Want the full show? Of course, but this two cd release still hits it.

Sound quality, A+. Bob t, yes, the first live Scarlet and Cassidy, really good.

Love the Playing reset and it is a peakers delight. And then you get the sandwich 🥪. So good.

Stay well out there. Looks like #36 has landed for some lucky folks. Looking forward to hearing the feedback while the rest of us wait.

I still have half the Cow Palace left.. the first half was spectacular. Powerful.

If we add in dekalb, our cow will be Corn Fed. I am still waiting for this show to grab me. Perhaps today is the day.

Lovely cold rainy day here in Rhode Island... Cold, rainy, 15 mile bike ride this morning, and now warming up with this show!! After I'm heading a little east to Cape Cod Coliseum 10/27/79 (spaced it on anniversary)... Not going to listen to the whole show but in the mood for that Dancing in the Streets>Franklin's Tower.. Steamers optional (soft shell clams).... Growing up in Ohio the only seafood i ever had was fishsticks!!! bobt

Continuing our saga...

Have been meaning to get to this show since, we’ll since 1989 as I had tickets to the Miami shows but had to sell because of Hampton. So know I missed a beauty the next night, but curious what I missed here?

This one was similar in many ways to others on this tour: generally played well though not flawless, sounds great, good songs, variety and set lists, good energy but still relaxed, not forced etc., good consistently...awesome weirdness!

So nice Bucket out of the gate, with slight miscue outta the jam, but good energy, same with Sugaree, not flawless , not stratospheric like some, but decent and a nice rarity (2 of 2) on the tour, same with the sweet FOTD (2/2) preceded by perhaps my favorite version of the tour of my favorite Brent song, Little Light. Brent finally sounds a little more like his usual self this night.
Bob cranks out Memphis, perhaps a tad over the top? JG with another nice change up: a good Cold Rain & Snow, the tours only! followed by a ragged but right Picasso Moon, and only the second Deal this tour. Nice solid 89 set, not mind blowing but good overall.

Next they come out with the Playin-Uncle-Playin sandwich, nothing unusual there, cept this tour so far that’s meant Dark Star, and perhaps that’s what the plan was? The first 2 thirds of the sandwich were quite tasty, nice spacey etc, but it’s almost like they and/or JG kinda hits the wall all of a sudden? First the transition isn’t smooth, then they seem to plod a bit, again, subtle but after hearing every show you catch some things you might not otherwise. Perhaps this anomaly caused the Star to recede until proper summons was issued?
Instead, Standing On The Moon is repeated from the previous show, and only the third of three, but while the last one really shined, this one seems to plod a bit too? The big vocal rave up is totally low key compared to the last.
After another awkward transition, Bob breaks out Truckin’’ to try and bring it back up a bit, but for a while it’s kinda tame and that fatigue vibe lingers, but they get the energy up and by the end Bob and Jerry are throwing some good shit back and forth with some nice angular, dissonant changes that eventually ebb, to begin the decent, into the weirdness zone like a hit starting to take hold. There’s a section in the earlier part of drums that has a wild sound effect that made me write “if gooey birds made sounds, this is what they’d sound like” LOL. Then a touch of trad drums and into the wild and back. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of meat, but I’ve always really dug this midi weirdness stuff. Like the big Dark Stars, I like the formless shit best, it’s what makes the Dead the best. Most bands have some good songs, but nobody does formless reflections of matter like the Dead! It’s cool how that all has progressed on the tour. Some sounds were very similar to what JG plays on the phenomenal Merl Album: Blues for the Rainforest.
Oh, also have kept meaning to mention that he’s been very subtly playing Close Encounters teases throughout the tour and he does so here. Just a couple notes and you have to be really listening cause it’s quick in the flow and never really full on, or takes flight. But a nice tease for those paying attention!
Eventually like a freight train blowing into then past the station hot, Gimme Sum Lovin’ brings things back up again, but is one more song spot less to fill with a big dog, and with Warf Rat following, though decent, probably puts the kibosh on any of that this night. After yet another sloppy transition Weir decides its time for his train into the station power flyby and brings a big Sugar Mag that by the end both he and Jer are ripping so hard you’d thinK this was the last song of the tour...well, not quite fellas...first, an up but bumpy US Blues and it’s down to 10/26 and the last one...
This show was kinda weird for me. On the surface it’s another status quo good 89 show, but deep down it’s got a few warts and perhaps a end of tour vibe that is subtle, but slightly noticeable compared to most of the previous shows. I probably wouldn’t feel that if I haven’t been doing the tour in order etc...
But overall another good show, with good lists and variety, something they did very well on this tour. In the case of the big dogs, some could argue they didn’t repeat enough!
Ok, only the last one left, and of course that’s a real doozy!

Finished up this beauty this morning. I really like this show. The flow is awesome. "This is the best day of my life". So good. The Eyes, Jam, St. Stephen, NFA into Black Peter hits it. And the Black Peter is top notch.
Best show of October 77? Not sure, 10/2/77 has been getting a lot play this month. Probably the best Casey Jones I have ever heard. Hope this one's gets released some day as it is part of the returned Betty stash now in the vault.

Hope you all enjoyed this show. Did it do it for you Jim?

In truth, I put it to rest after an argument w/ the mrs. So another distracted listen. I have had equally bad luck with Dave's Picks 11, Wichita. Cursed listens.

It was a crappy rainy day and with everyone spending so much time at home.. sometimes things get overshadowed by the covid blues.

Maybe tomorrow.

And for Dekalb, one of the better all around complete shows of the era. Different from what they were doing pre-hiatus, but definitely a powerhouse show. One that deserves full attention and a louder volume.

Previous night is nice as well, what with the Candyman that's a nod to Halloween and the lovely He's Gone. I wonder if they ever unearthed the last reel from that show at Soldiers and Sailors.

I was thinking about some of the best Space Jams the band ever did. I haven't thought about it a whole heck of a lot, but the Brain Fry Space meltdown from 12/2/73 and the Space Jam before Wharf Rat on 7/5/78 are good. Someone was mentioning the Space Jams from October '94 all being good.

Anybody putting a Space Jams soundtrack together for Halloween?

Y'all strap yourselves in for November and 30 Days. I hope you win the calendar! :-)

Our group only made one.... 1985-10-31 - Carolina Coliseum USC - Columbia, SC.

I remember the unique sound system arrangement. I remember the place being one level pie shaped and in the back corners they had speakers set up. Bob screaming during Werewolves was piped through these speakers and the sound wrapped around the arena. We gave Music Never Stopped and Tenn Jed a plus 1. LL Rain got a plus 3, listening right now,,, nice recording,,, came from archive.

I remember a huge spray string war at a holiday inn down the street. I remember people changed the sign in front of IHOP to read something like LSD served inside. Can't say I remember how heavy I was tripping, but I know I was!

10/31/70 NRPS from Fifty years ago playing as I type this.
Digging these NRPS sets and the story behind these shows.
SBDs recorded by the SUNY sound crew and we get essentially 4 complete shows Early & Late with the NRPS both nights!
That’s killer.
10/30/70 you can tell the band is a bit frustrated with the scene and if you read about what was going on around them that night and in general at this time, it gives cool insight to what you’re hearing.

The student sound guy for one is turning down the mic volume when there’s no singing and then when the singer gets back on the mic, the mics not working. I noticed this a couple of times in Lovelight, which in turn throws off the bands timing. I believe by 10/31 Bob & Pigpen threaten the sound guy, looking forward to that today :)

Well worth a visit for their completeness in a tape desert during this historic period in the GD verse.

10/30 & 10/31/80 - Who watched Shakedown Stream?!?
Some killer info about the story behind the 1980 Radio City & Warfield tapes.
DV - DL gives the skinny on the story of the master tapes in detail (minus the dates of what exists and what doesn’t). You gotta check it out.

From what I was hearing, random reels of those masters were recorded over for Brent Mydland’s solo stuff.. At the time the archival value wasn’t perceived and they essentially saw those tapes as having already been used up in the making of Reckoning & Dead Set. So they'd grab.. say reel 5 of 7 and use it for a new project.
Fascinating and somewhat heartbreaking stuff!

Favorite Halloween shows - 10/31/85 has always been a favorite. (Wow Dennis you were there, I’ve always loved that one since I first heard it BITD) and 10/31/71, 10/31/69.
Shit I like em all! 10/31/83, 10/31/84.
