Holy S#%*! It’s the COMPLETE Europe ’72 Box! On Over 60 Discs!

    $450.00
    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings

Hey now! Due to overwhelming demand, surprising even those of us with huge faith in the Europe '72 project, the entire limited edition run of 7,200 boxed sets has sold out in less than 4 days. We thank you beyond words for your support and belief in this unprecedented and wonderful release.

After lengthy discussions, we've decided we don't want to deprive anyone of this music, some of the finest the Grateful Dead ever performed. Of course, we're keeping to our promise that the boxed set and all of its accouterments will not be made available beyond these 7,200 boxed sets (and wait until you see the case in which the music is housed, the hard-bound coffee-table book, plus all of the other cool surprises we've been unearthing!). But, we're going to offer just the music, all 22 shows, more than 60 CDs, more than 70 hours of music, each show housed in its own packaging, for the same price as the boxed set, $450 including domestic shipping. Although perhaps not as cool as the boxed set, the bottom line is that the most important aspect of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings is going to be made available to all, the music.

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan, beautifully designed EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping 60+ DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this stunning box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

The packaging is, as you might expect, first rate. Each show is its own Digipak, with its own liner notes by top Dead scholars (including David Gans, Steve Silberman, and Nicholas Meriwether) and attendees of some of the concerts, and many never-before-seen photos. Additionally, there is an enormous book worthy of coffee table treatment featuring hundreds more photos and a comprehensive essay by yours truly (Blair Jackson). The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour.

A rough sketch of the potential packaging.
Check back soon for more product images.

At $450, this clearly will not be a box for everyone. In fact, this individually numbered boxed set will be limited to orders placed with a maximum of 7,200 boxes produced. As a special bonus, the first 3,000 orders will receive a personalized copy. Due to the huge manufacturing costs (wait 'til you see it! We're doing something unlike any other boxed set release ever! It's exceptional!!), we need to hit 3,000 sales before we even go into production. If we don't reach 3,000 by April 1st, the boxed set won't be able to happen. This isn't a gun-to-your-head sales pitch. Rather, we want to be open with you about the realities of this release's massive scope and ambition.

    -->

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    I second what D-Rae says-
I second what D-Rae says- put them up as downloads. I like all the extras that come with the box sets, but honestly, I usually just look at that stuff once and then store it away. The MUSIC is what matters to me.

Kind of prophetic - Mega box of rain
And it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it thereBelieve it if you need it or leave it if you dare And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there

Yea, but how many of those
Yea, but how many of those shows you have on CDR are professional remixes from the 16-track tapes, and not just the 2-track soundboards?

that would work really good in reverse also! You could double the mileage out of your poetic endeavors. Another day and no one has come for my money :-(. I thought I posted here this morning successfully and it opened in a new page (256), but it's not here so I must have screwed something up and she who must be obeyed says dinner is ready....no time to repeat :-)

questions (once I could cut and paste adequately) and today Tony V answered by questions on letting me know that everything is on track. Thanks for all, especially Rhino's decision to make this all available. The wait for the show to start is tough but I get to sit patiently with all my friends in rapt anticipation. Soon the show(s) will start ;o} The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I, too, and must say that the experience was easy and informative. As to the waiting, well, that's part of the show as well as we all have ... So, as the crowd swells to capacity for the open note we pause to consider the reality of our situation surrounded by friends and like-minded souls we attempt to ascend the heights of joy upon the wings of sounds gone by to climb, to rise, to be with as the multitutes dance we twirl and swirl in the endless atmosphere of our lives L H M The Sky Was Yellow And The Sun Was Blue People Stopping Strangers Just To Shake Their Hand.

If 9/15 is the shipping date I am bummed because I will be on tour with Furthur without this box of 73 discs I thought I would have by then.... Please say it ain't so! Ahhh well, guess I'll have to have it Fed-Exed along the tour route. Sheesh, you think they would take care of the diehard fan base. And oh yeah, the hold dropped off your credit card for this one. It'll reappear 9/15. Count on it.

I say! Went up into the Gold Country Thursday morning knowing that when I returned there would be that credit card pre announcement there........... Not!!!!!This IS a lot like being a kid and waiting for Xmas morning :-) Keep recalling the time I slipped out of bed in the middle of the night, quietly opened my bedroom door and so stealthily crept down the hallway. Peeked around the corner to the Christmas tree to get a preview of the goodies Santa Claus had left.....Nothing, not a thing. Devastated I returned without a sound to my bed and laid there until sleep comforted my desolation. Next morning my mother gets me up for school....gee whiz, it was 12/17, not Christmas Eve. There is probably a lesson to be learned here. Other than there are to many days in the month of August this year, it's beyond me....

I was just surprised, is all. A couple of people posted having the account check on the first days and I sort of expected to see something happen this week. I figured the personalized sets would need to be verified first since they have to be personalized. I guess. LOL. No worries. Have a good week, freaks!

I live in N.E. PA. and I received my set today....it was so nice I had tears in my eyes! It's in a replica steamer trunk with a latch and a handle. Inside the lid is a hardbound book, a softbound book, and a sticker, all in a cloth pocket like the inside of a trunk/suitcase. In the trunk itself are 22 digipaks for the shows, each numbered and in their own slots. The individual digipaks don'y have booklets, but a continuing narrative that starts with Set1 and finishes in Set22. If a Set has 4 discs, the extra space is usually filled with more photos. Most have 3 or 4 discs apiece. One has 1 disc because it was from a TV show performance (Beat-Club, Bremen, Germany, more on that to follow), and one show has 2 discs because it was a concert for Radio Luxembourg. All the digipaks have artwork that mimics the iconic Europe '72 album cover, and each discs' artwork is done so it represents the country the show was in, you just have to see it, it's REALLY cool! Now for the complaints (sorry!)...The book is too heavy to be stored in the trunk's lid. Even though the trunk is well constructed, it still is just cardboard and leather. I can see people ripping the lid off it's hinges by accident. The Radio Bremen performance WAS FILMED and should have had a companion DVD. I know other shows were at least partially filmed, DVD's would have been the icing on the set! Last but not least, the Green Police attack again with all the discs unprotected except for the cardboard sleeves. For such an expensive set they could have at least put the discs in to Japanese type protective sleeves, a pet peeve of mine with a lot of new releases. Aside from my few quibbles though, IT'S THE MUSIC THAT MATTERS! I'll post again after some musical immersion......ENJOY & REJOICE FELLOW DEADHEADS!!!

Does anyone know why it is impossible to contact customer service via the 800 number? I received an e-mail stating there was a problem with my credit card and I should call to resolve the issue. I tried yesterday and this morning. I am on hold for very long periods of time - no one picks up. Did everyone take vacation at the same time? :)

...but that music makes me wanna scrub my ears out with Brillo. Ugh. Just got off with my call (an undefined "charge didn't go through" issue, not necessarily at my end). Never had to give that big old order number, just gave him my name and he knew why I had called... "Glad you called us, we were gonna sell your box on eBay". LMAO, those wacky CS guys ;). I gave him all the debit card info again, he said they'd try again within 72 hours and contact me again if there was any problem. Cool. And if I have to, I will find somebody at the bank and rip 'em a new one big enough to drive a bus Furthur through.

I have this from the boss. So crazy-making as things may be at the moment when some people are blissing out over their newly arrived sets and you're going ???, please hang in there, we really are working on this pretty hard. Received mine this afternoon, I saw the UPS truck pull up, the driver slowly exits the truck with this box, it's big, but manageable, he gingerly brings it to the front door and gently places it on a pillow sitting in the chair by the front door, it's was like he knew...In the meantime, I was inside jumping up and down like a little girl who just got a pony.

I STILL haven't heard a thing....no credit card pre, email, tracking info, NADA!!!!! The space in between the lines was a long silent scream. If you listen carefully you can probably hear it reverberating quietly across the universe. Back in January when I received the email about E72 from deadnet the treasure chest had been on sale for several days. My scream wasn't so silent and had a totally different pitch :-). Anyways I'm figurin' by that point my position could easily have been well above 6500....... And THAT'S why I haven't heard anything yet. It's not the little black cloud that follows me around. PLEASE keep posting which # of 7200 your chest is so I can throttle up my panic appropriately. stepineden72, I had the pre-auth on my credit card on 8-19, but it's aged off now without the completion coming through. I'm hoping UPS will show up with my package and I'll just not have to pay for it. ;-) I thought sure it would arrive today, as we had the first rainy day in months and I figured it would be sitting on my doorstep getting damp. From the photos on Ebay it looks like it's packed well so I'm not worried...

got it! Right, where's that map? Anyhow, great box, lots of fun..... exhaustive notes on each CD from different sources. Looks like I need to upgrade my CD player to extract the HDCD, although it sounds wonderful now. A nice hardbound photo book and an orginal-repro playbook from one of the shows. I saved the cardboard insert for the inside part, and will prop up the top when I open it as the hinges are flimsy, it being more of a showpiece than something you want to lug around. I hope it gets reviewed by the NY times as the greatest release ever... Then again, who cares, then again, it is so great.... sounds like summer, easy and bright, a place to go or not worry about arriving at.......

Got my box today. The package arrived beat up, looks like it may have been opened. Did I get all the extras ? There was a hardcover book, a tour program and a sticker. Is that it ? No map of Europe tracing the trip ? No reproduction of Jerry's passport ? No ticket or backstage pass repros ? Or, contract repros ? No vial of genuine Europe soil ? How about a clown mask ? Oh well, it's a lot better to find all that music on my doorstep instead of the recent hurricane here in Jersey !

Dear Rhino and Gentle Readers, From the announcement on the website: "The box will also contain other memorabilia and ephemera from the tour." From the description at the store: "This magnificent, unprecedented collection will also feature memorabilia and ephemera from the tour, . . . ." Sadly, my personalized steamer trunk contained no memorabilia or ephemera. This was somewhat disappointing. Apparently, the concepts of enclosing "Travel Documents" ("Tickets, Flyers, Maps, Etc.") in a manila envelope, of enclosing posters and maps bearing "Steal Your Face" emblems at each tour stop, and of the "Stash Box" expressed in the rough sketch of the proposed packaging were abandoned before production. The concept of enclosing a replica of the "Book of the Dead" tour program fortunately was preserved and implemented. The replica program and the hardcover book are high-quality and well-produced. The choices of saturated color, fine grain, and glossy stock in the photographic reproductions in the book yield a salubrious luxury. The photograph of Keith Godchaux on page 70 is revelatory, haunting, and heartbreaking. The mix on "Cumberland Blues" from Wembley 4/8/72 is dry and crisp. It is extremely gratifying to hear it considering the possibility that the original had been cut from its original reel and spliced to the "sub reel" (as it is described on the handwritten tape-reel covers reproduced in the book) with some irreversible alteration or damage resulting. Happily, this seems not to have been the case. It is also most gratifying to hear Jerry, Bob, and Phil's exhilaratingly precise and superbly well-arranged vocal harmonies viva voce, in their proper context, and to know they were sung live, onstage. Otherwise, Jerry is good and loud, but Keith is hard to hear. There is some phase-cancellation in Weir's vocals in the right-channel -- a shallowing and swallowing of the sound in slap-echo and reverb. The cavernous characteristics of Wembley having been dampened by draped parachutes in the hall, it remains to be elucidated how such slap-echo and reverb has made its way into this recording. Perhaps far miking in the field or some use of reverb in the live mix accounts for this artifact. Anyway, the best aspect of the mix is the accentuation of the all-too-often overlooked axis between Jerry and Billy, who understood the subtle relationship between eighth-notes and triplets better than anybody in the business. Billy's ride work spurs Jerry on. All in all, a good issue and a good purchase, featuring a wealth of never-before-seen photographs and never-before-heard mixes (and a few recordings) reproduced well and truly. It is inspiring to see such rich and revealing Vault resources put to such good use. Best to all, deadhead66

I love the new artwork that was made for each of the shows! The sound on these discs are great! I'm almost done with the first show and I'm pleased with the set so far. The book is well done and I'm enjoying the liners for this release. Lots of music and info to digest! All in all the guys in the Dead camp did a bang up job on this set. Thanks guys! Cheers to everyone involved!

We have reports of sightings as far west as Colorado and numbers closing in on three thousand. The Sierras are but a bump in the road to the coming onslaught. 3600 will fall as treasure chests flood the land!Sounds good to me! Come on baby!!! Hey Marye, whatcha gonna call the new thread? The long wait for the arrival is rapidly transitioning into the experience of E72.

Someone told me if your set does not contain personalization - but should - the powers that be will send the baggage sticker printed how you want it - however, it will not be numbered. My son's set came through perfectly - mine, not so much :( I'm trying to get confirmation on this. I still have the e-mail with the order number and requested personalization, so I know my set was in the first 3,000, but I might be out of luck. I'll try customer service again.

As previously noted in this thread, the scalping of this set will bethe most vicious scalp of all time. At the present moment 8/31/11 at 10:45 am pdt there are fifteen 15 ! box sets on sale on ebay from $450 to $1,000 + considering the appeal of this set it is RUDE of Rhino/GDM to not have made more effort to get this set into the hands of people who care about this music instead of people taking advantage of us. The Sky Was Yellow And The Sun Was Blue People Stopping Strangers Just To Shake Their Hand.

to prevent scalpers? drop the box off at everyone's place of residence and hang out with them for the next X months while they agree that they're actual fans? do background checks? they limited the number of boxes people can buy. scalpers are going to scalp, that's all there is to it. they chose to release the music independent of the box/extras (something they didn't do w/ the Fillmore box). if people place such a high dollar amount on the music + the box, two books and a sticker, let them pay. they can always buy JUST the music if they want to.
