    We have a tremendous variety of music for you this week, spanning almost 20 years of the Grateful Dead’s recorded history, and we hope you’ll find this week’s journey as enjoyable as we did while preparing it for you.

    As we mentioned last week, we have a bit more music from the Family Dog in San Francisco, specifically the encore from 9/6/69, a nice Pigpen-led Midnight Hour, with plenty of good jamming in the background.

    Our next chronological stop on this week’s trip is 9/9/72 at the Palladium in Hollywood (venue of the performance of one of the best-ever versions of Hard To Handle, in 1971). From this show in 1972, we have the second set jam of He’s Gone>Truckin’>The Other One, which features a reel flip that is just a fact of life in these 7” reel-to-reel tapes, which run at 7.5 ips, meaning the tape is changed every 47 or so minutes. It’s always fortunate when the cuts are located in acceptable places, like this, rather than the brutal cuts that often destroy the listening experience. This one really isn’t too bad.

    At this point we jump forward a year to 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum, with a song that mightn’t be what people think of first when they think of 1973: Looks Like Rain. This is a really great rendition, and just sounds so darn good, we thought you’d enjoy it. And, for a dose of quintessential 1973 music, we have the first set closing song from the same show: Playing In The Band. I really can’t get enough of these 1973 Playing In The Bands, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.

    Going forward to 1985, to 9/3/85 in Kansas City, we have the pre-Drums sequence featuring That’s It For The Other One>Eyes of the World>I Don’t Need Love. The “Cryptical” part of the sequence in 1985 never quite matched the energy or perfection of the 1969 versions, but the “Other One” portion of the song is very good, as is the Eyes and the rare Don’t Need Love. This is drawn from the Beta PCM digital masters.

    Lastly this week, we have a couple of songs from London on 4/7/72, specifically Pigpen’s Chinatown Shuffle and a powerhouse Me and My Uncle.

    tj crowley when one focuses one what one dosen't have, one loses gratitude of what one does have. since the onset on this allowance (?) to download, i've set up the cd's to create diferent atmosphere's..going back (some of us never left) and listenning to already burned (sorry dave L) disc's, it takes away whatever pain mite be generated by the loss (what can one lose when one never had) of probable tunes. listen to the space>comes a time>sugar mags.5 18 77..great seque from space w/ Phil pounding out the change...unbeleivable comes a time w/ jer hitting really sweet notes..THEN check the 'playinm' from 5 17 74...nice Phil..bobby kick's ass (and his guitar is noticable - he's probable the finest rhythem guitarist applying a piano approach to the guitar)..if you close your eyes (careful if your operating heavy machinery!) you can visualize bobby croutched over the neck of the guitar driving the bus to never ever land...

    This is getting boring...
    Especially when Gans comes in with a brilliant comment like this: "Eight gigabytes wasn't enough?" Hey, David (G), what about you? I haven't noticed your saying what you think of the GDH no longer being in MP3 format. You've never been overly upset about people trading your shows. What's your take on all this?

    I can't get enough of pigpen... And I'm starting to get used to the new listening method (although it's still a bummer). As others said, there should at least be an option to stream all the files together, so that we don't have to come back to the page each time a song ends. It'll make things a lot easier for us listening while doing other things. Cheers.

It would be a little redundant to mention Englishtown when it was already released as Dicks Picks...who doesn't own it? Who cares? Most of us folks couldn't hear the stream anyway! Might as well discontinue this section, it serves no purpose other than rub our faces into it.

The beginning of the end was Bill Graham dying, then Jerry passing, and it has been slowly dying for years. Lesh and Weir cannot even play together and we are dealing with people like the guy running this taper's section. What a sad ending to a legendary saga....

Gr8ful Today I commemorate a wonderful memory of a great 3 set masterpiece by the Dead in Boulder. God bless everyone who was there > I'll visit 9/21-22 for the CU-Miami game and hope for another rain shower and a free bag of pot during some special moment. The Other One is beyond compare, except for a the Harding from 1971, maybe. Nothing like the Phil bomb leading-in. Thanks David for the 9/3/72 filler on a recent Dick's Picks (Philly 9/21/72). Keep working on finding good sound from the Saenger 10/18-19/80, por favor.

....for suggestions for next week I nominate the "Eyes of The World" from 9/11/74. Love that streched out intro. Maybe some some of the preceding "Seastones" too. When I first took up tape trading in 1995, set 2 of 9/3/85 was the very first show I traded for. Very interesting set. Jerry sounds like he's dying at the end of Cryptical when he wails "you know he had to diieeeeeeeee....." Love that "Midnight Hour" from 1967. Thanks!

I STILL CAN'T HEAR A THING! Not on any of my home PC's, not on my work laptop. Nothing, no where no how. This new format is a waste of time for everyone involved. It stinks. It is limiting. It is punitive to the loyal fans. It is irritating to all who visit here. It is just plain wrong no matter how you look at it. Either drop this from the site or change it but something needs to happen. This is pissing me off that there are golden nuggets out there and I can't get to them. Better they were not there in the first place. Please David - a little love.. please!

Folks, I just came that way. I'm just nice, often to a fault. My apologies if somehow my not pissing and moaning is harshing on your choice to feel the way you do. It seems to me that a decision was made that had very little to do with how anyone at the customer base feels. It doesn't look like it was a personal attack against the Deadhead community from some evil overlords at Rhino, and I honestly don't understand why so many people seem to be taking it personally. Maybe, just maybe, it's a decision that had to be bigger than the customer base here? Maybe, just maybe, it ain't all about us? And really, about all the bitching, name-calling, hateful rhetoric and other generally unpleasant horseshit sprung from the beating of that poor dead horse, if it was going to make a difference, don't you think the difference would have been made by now? If you haven't added your rant yet, do you really think your voice is going to be the magic one to turn the tide here? Why add to the hate?

tj crowley did kinda expect some sort of a response (other than the pre-arranged response 'we' were supplied) from those behind the wheel. love 'LLR' 'other one' 'palying' but will not get to hear due to lack of setting to do so. not accessable from at work (which is where i am presently) and no access at home due to memebrs that live in the house with me - daughter 32 (and her daughter 7) son 21, son 10, wife ? who all believe that they have rughts to the computor. dis-appointed that this eems to have from a family like setting with a bond that has been built over the years to a simply business like venture w/o any inter-persoanl skills. oh well

First the SBD where removed from the Archives, now this...it just stinks. I am sorry, i don't hate anybody, and i am not calling anybody names...but i am saying i feel disrespected after following the band for over 30 years and spending lots of my hard earned money to line their coiffures. But i am just saying clearing so the people who made the decision know...i for one will not spend another penny as long as i am treated this way. thats all...

If people are angry it's because they don't understand the erratic nature of this organization. Now it's GDradio, and already people are curious about whether it's alright to record the Hollywood Bowl '74 show that will be the inagural broadcast. If we do, will we lose that avenue as well? I'm bummed that after purchasing "Steppin' Out" which is great but is, let's face it, a compilation, more and more of Wembly Stadium is coming out that I simply can't hear. Why was it wrong to download a couple of tunes to complete a compilation that I paid good money for?

Izzie and all-From where I sit, I think that this isn't just about the 'downloads', its about a series of losses that this community has experienced and some of us have got stuck in that space. Jerry's death, deadlive.com.'s demise, special friend's passing on, whatever is going on with the strange that remain (Phil & Bob-Mickey, Billy, bandwise, future music etc.), etc., etc. And the stark reminder that the official access to the Dead's body of music is limited and was just constricted further. Hey, I must admit, I never downloaded from the Taper's Section. I am too old school, (couldn't quite figure it out, Flintsonian computer skills, also I procrastinated with having one of my sons show me, another lost opportunity...) so that puts me back into that spot to interact with others and trade (Hey Fred?) for some of those tasty tidbits from the past. I can see that people got used to that monday 'dance' and unfortunately we are definately creatures of habit, and this loss/change shocked and dismayed. As a community we have weathered changes, reached out and helped one another, and sometimes, just sometimes, we can make our future sweeter. I am not sure about all this, it is just a little look into our collective psyche, my humble guess (oroboros psychology), it is another transition, and hopefully good things are on the horizon, I just have to work to do my part. And to recognize what I can do to make things better and then do it. I can't tell anyone else what to do, there is no balm for the broken heart, scorn in and of itself is rarely productive and really only when both parties care about one another and are willing to then give "only love can fill'. From where I sit, this relationship with Rhino is a brand new trip. I'm sure that they are not used to me (is my wife after 27 years?) and I am sure not used to things now. Because it entails change. Step One: Stop saying that people who are upset with the downloads stopping are bad and that the people who are okay with it are good. Step Two: Release some shows. On CD or even better, LP. I have money to give to you to buy these things, yet, you don't seem to want to offer any more. It's really sad and it kind of makes me wonder if the entire Dead organisation isn't just sitting in an ivory tower laughing at us while they count money and shift in and out of being reptiles. Well, I'm going to follow the Dead's business model and open a store and then start a radio station devoted to the store that only .5% have access to and then not sell anything else. But yeah, I'm a bad guy for not bowing to GDP on this issue. Cripes.

Ah, yes, the familiar pattern from the Archive Incident and from numerous flaps over at the old DNC. First a Happening, then complainers, and then people complaining about the complainers. Well, can I now complain about the people complaining about the complainers? "David" 's special message last week included this at the end: "Where we’re at today requires us to step back, gather some information, do some thinking and get back to you." I think this is more than enough justification for many of us to expect some sort of further response on this matter--maybe this week would have been a little soon to hope for something, but you can't blame us for tuning in this Monday expecting to learn something new. And it's not exactly playing nice to call us whiners if we're disappointed when we don't. I agree, Steve-O: mean people suck. Also, leaving aside the whole question of disappointment over the loss of the downloads, there's still the problem of the streams not working for so many people (and that includes me). Is that not a valid reason for posting?

I am personally over the download thing; hey, it was good while it lasted, but all good things must come to an end. I only wish the heads would have taken a little more of the high road in this thing, rather than all of the personal attacks. But what's done is done. I myself am probably just going to think twice before making any future purchases of new releases by Rhino (Dead or otherwise). And I now find myself coming back to this site less and less (and less). I remember when John Fogerty sold his copyrights to some market driven company, he wouldn't play any of his Credence songs for years, as I believe he used to say, "hey, I don't feel like putting another tank of gas in some rich guy's Mercedes." That might be something to hang our heads on in this thing. Where do I see the future of the GD movement going? well, when talking to some young people, you'll start hearing more and more, "the Grateful Dead, what band is that?" The good news is, Phil's tour will soon be cranking up, and he will be selling downloads of all his shows (probably give away one free-bee, as well). Greg SC

Thanks for this week's great releases David. It's a shame fewer people can access it all now that the format has changed, but I know you're trying to bring out new music. I bet you have a list of stuff you want to release. I'm just hoping Rhino isn't dictating to you what it wants to sell - God help us if you lose control over what comes out of the vault. Does anyone know if the new Sirius radio thing will be available in Australia? I'm guessing no. I could read the pages and pages of fine print but I have other things I'd rather do. I really don't get the point of any Dead product (e.g. unreleased shows) being sold anywhere other than on dead.net. Surely it makes sense for the official website to sell new shows? I think they may have missed the boat as far as streaming radio goes anyway. Dead Heads would rather the shows were sold as downloads so they can actually listen to them when they feel like (as music should always be), make audio CDs out of them or put them on mp3 players. What good is a streaming audio show, probably unmastered, that plays at 4 o'clock in the morning local time (for me in Australia that is)? It just seems like they've gone to easy option - get someone else to play the shows - which will backfire on them and us in the end since only relatively few of us get to hear it, meaning they'll make less money from it, so are discouraged from releasing more shows. We've already showed that we want downloads if Rhino only wants to sell downloads instead of actual CDs. Jeffrey Norman and David L were doing a great job at putting out different releases from different periods. I think Rhino doesn't understand that if they release a desirable release, Dead Heads will all buy it. Of course we aren't going to go through the back catalogue - most of us have what we want out of it. Rhino has to release NEW things (i.e. not repackaged Vault releases with bonus material that was on previous releases). As many have pointed out, the longer it takes, the less interested Dead Heads will be. There's always somewhere else to get the music - that's the legacy of this band, so Rhino has to be aware of that, rather than treat the vault like any other band's.

For all those who are OK with the changes, get out of your McMansion, hop in your Hummer and cruise over to Starbucks and get your fix of corporate BS...real effective use of the vault to cobble together a greatest hits compilation for some soccer moms to sip their latte's by, cause I am sure there are no live tracks on there. Once the big Hollywood movie comes out about Garcia he will be the flavor of the month just like Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, too bad they garnered more popularity after they died. I don't like pop-culture, nor will I roll over take it, as long as I voice left I'll complain.

I've been thinking . . . Why did Rhino acquire everything in the first place? I've been looking for old news articles on this, but maybe someone can enlighten me. Should I assume that that the original GDP with the Dicks Picks and download series was /unprofitable/? If that was truly the case, then there are two possibilities: Either GDP was inefficiently managed, and could have continued to sell the same obscure concerts with only a minor restructuring...or, it could even be that selling obscure concerts to a small number of diehard fans can never be profitable. : ( I dearly hope it's the former. If it's the latter . . . well, then the fans might need to take things into their own hands if they want the Deadhead spirit to continue.

are out there for both streams that don't work and the Starbucks release, which does happen to have a disc of all live material. (even for those of us in tiny studio apartments and driving beat to shit pick up trucks....)

Why? Why does anyone have to explain anything to any of you? Well, I've loved the band for years, well I buy a lot of recordings, well because it's what I feel is the right thing to do, well they took the recordings away from archive,... Get over all of it and get over yourselves. Guess what, it's there music, they can do whatever they want. Period. Instead of being thankful that there are resources like this to hear tasty gems, all you want to do is complain because it's not the way you want it to be. Welcome to this little thing called life, it's not fair all of the time. What makes this worse, is you can still listen to all of these great songs, but once again, if it's not the exact way you want it, well then I'll just complain and resort to name calling. Of course we have to hear, this would not make Jerry happy. Well, how do you know, did you personally know him? Oh, wait you've read a few quotes from him that gave you a keen insight into his mind, so you know exactly what he would think. And of course, I have to read well Jerry said when we're done with it, it's theirs. Yeah he said that back in the early 70's, and I'm sure with the keen insight everyone has into Jerry's mind, they know exactly what he meant and that he never changed his mind. Back to the point that it's still available, how hard is it to click on the song link, pick whether you want to use quicktime or windows media and listen to it? What's worse than that, is the I don't have time to listen to this streaming. Well, if it's important enough to you than you can make time, if not I guess you'll just have to move on. We still have to listen to multiple complaints about Archive.org going away. Listen, there are tons of sources to get copies of pretty much any Dead show that was taped. Not just audience copies, but great soundboard copies. In fact there are several sites that actually have projects where they make every show taped for a particular year available. The best part, it's all free, yes that's right, free. This is all at your fingertips, all it takes is for you to quit being so lazy, take a few minutes and go find it, it's out there. Not to mention that there are 60+ offically released live recordings. But wait, I want the Winterland '73 boxset, not 12/31/76 (which is a great release by the way). Once again, if you really want the 11/73 Winterland run, go find it. I've got all three shows, excellent soundboards, just takes a few minutes to go find the resources to get them. No other band or musician comes close to offering all of this music to listen to, yet look at all the complaining. It's this kind of lazy, complaining, sense of entitlement that gave the scene such a bad rap at the end. With that said, David, thank you for all that you have done and all that you are doing. I am looking forward to your futrue selections for this feature and the future releases you guys are working on.

I thought Davids message last week told us all we need to know for right now! I feel we should just wait and see what happens!! Is there another band out there that allow's as much access to their music as this one! I was dissapointed w/ the removal of the mp3's but i am willing to wait to see how this all plays out and give the GOGD the benefit of the doubt. As far as people having problems with the streaming aspect of it if you don't have a high speed internet connection then you will have trouble. But the music is there if you want it!! Rogue

After wading through so many posts complaining about the changes made, I have to wonder how many have spent years building their collections, spent days waiting for the mail, spent hours making copies of tapes (in real time) just looking for the best version of a particular show? Whatever happened to the vast amounts of patience the Deadheads had while putting together their tape collections? Does the internet enable us all to be victims of instant gratification? Does it foster the belief that once we have possession of a particular show, it is ours, rather than something to share? I must agree with Charlie Miller's post. David Lemieux is the vault archivist. He knows what is and what's not there. And every now and then, he surprises us with a little taste of something that has been assumed to not exist. He had some big shoes to fill after Dick Latvala died and he's doing a damned fine job of filling them. David probably doesn't make policy and a nasty post or complaint is just unnecessary. Rhino has been putting out Grateful Dead music for many years and has done a fine job. Great packaging, wonderful liner notes, and of course the mastering has been superb. I do believe that with the access they now have to the vault and with David Lemieux's archival knowledge, we will be seeing some truly great releases in the future. Just my .02
