The Only One
Was on a course (HM Customs and Excise) in Southend for the week. At the time I was aged 21 and living in Cleethorpes. Got train to London and tube/bus up to the Ally Pally and fulfilled my ambition from 1970 (when I first heard Dark Star while at the Isle of Wight Festival). Can still visualise the amazingly huge arches that constituted the Big Hall with the stage at one end. Was an amazing gig, one of the best and thanks to Dick's Picks Volume 7 I can relive the experience anytime I like. Would love to have seen them more times but hey! they didn't do that many gigs in blighty.
This was a night of magic,
This was a night of magic, music and wonder. Its the only time I ever managed to see the Dead and Ive never forgotten it even tho the use of enhancing substances might have proved otherwise! The perfect band at the perfect venue!!!
Three Days On The Road
I was at college in High Wycombe and shared a house with a bunch of deadheads. In all about 10 of us went to London and hung out at the venue for all three days. We made sure we were at the front and ran through the entrance to the hall barely stopping to pick up the Round Records flyers which I still have. There were some technical difficulties but it was still pure magic and a real high point in my deadshow viewing career.
Never missed a UK show after that.
I cannot remember which…
I cannot remember which night I went (along with my wife and a few friends) but ass I always bought tickets for the final night it was probably that one. Yes, I remember the flyers and postcards for various records. I believe I still have somewhere the one for 'Tales of The Great Rum Runners'
