Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

I have always liked this show and the video. And you were there OB, that is great. Sounds like fun. Are you in the video?

Yes. the first two songs get the show off to a great start, Truckin, at the number 2 slot! That second set jam/space after Terrapin is interesting. Charlie Miller has the whole sequence as Terrapin, but I think it moves out of Terrapin. Anyway, great stuff. Love those Baby Blue closers. If you stay tuned in after the encore they have some great bonus footage from 10/2/87 from Shoreline. Another great show.

Alright, count me in on the 83 show!

Howsa bouta a little 83 energy for a Fri yea?

6/16/90: good call DV! Haven’t heard this since the Shakedown Stream, man those were fun.
Needed some kind of ritual at the time, even TOO watched and she ain’t really into the dead.

Always dug a good Good Times Roll opener, usually a good sign. Fun Truckin if not mind blowing, solid Touch O,
Nice FOTD, hot Cassidy, fun but perhaps trepid Big Boss, but fun non the less, and another slightly unusual and fun OMSN to close a fun set.
Though the first might not of been thoroughly consistent, the second set gets going nice, good versions of most songs, and a nice China Doll in spite of Jerry struggling a bit. Rousing Mags and and always welcome sweet Baby Blue encore. But!…But, to me that whole sequence from Estimated, terrapin and all that awesome psychedelic goodness that follows is what makes this show stand out for moi.
For a while I was thinking “this shows ok but..?, “ by half way through the second those thoughts were gone baby gone. It’s a shame JG didn’t fully nail the China as that would of really took it up a notch overall.
Good show, even better in person, first trip to the promised land, hot 20 year old GF along, tripping the light fandango in the cool California night sea breeze. What a trip that was, sighhhh.

That image that shows either two faces or a chalice depending on how you look at it.
If I try to hear those anomalies I can, but if I just crank up some tunes and don’t try, then I only notice when it gets bad, if that makes sense. Another variable: plangent etc. Those old Road Trips and Dicks didn’t have the benefit of Plangent.
Capitol 71 bonus disc did, AND, their multitrack so if say Bobby had some weird noise issues on his line, it couid isolated and messed with. Wood really love to hear some of that deconstruction tech they used on the Beatles…

St Louie: going in I thought I was going to dig the 73 the most, and that one disc probably is my pick of the litter. I thought I’d dig the 71, but comparatively not as much as the other 2 years. But at first the 71s really stood out to me.
    I love when that happens!
I think I recall thinking the music was great overall, but that there were some unfortunate anomalies.
I guess to get full shows that’s going to happen sometimes especially in years that have been mined more extensively.
To me when it comes down to it and your properly prepped and ready, once you settle in it’s all about the music!
Like the band entraining, after a while it all becomes one…

DV with a call for 6/16/90. That sounds good, just not sure if I should wait and watch it, or just fire it up now?
Thinking I might dabble this WE with the Louie…still have some primal Doc to catch up on too.
Finally getting a few extra days off, then one last push at this job swapping out net and installing new Cisco stacking tech. Owners are supposed to be gone so maaaayyybbbeee I can catch some tunes. I really need to get a portable personal rig but I’m such a snob that would get pricey and more importantly I don’t have time, err, if /when I do have time I’d rather just sit and listen to tunes!
So 6/16/90, think that was my 86th show, weird/cool vibe, you had to be there, or maybe it was the roses ; )

For me there's a certain point where both the right brain and left brain agree that it's kick ass Grateful Dead I am listening to and recording anomalies fade into a blissfull background.

Let it be known i am a recording snob.. so it hurts by my left and right to commit to great performance vs. great recording.

I still think so highly of this run. Warts and all, it's classic Fall '72 GD.

Appreciate the insight Jim, BC and OB.
I have found sometimes, for whatever reason I hear differently after the first go around with the Dave's and the Box sets. Most of the time, I think damn this sounds so good, once in a while I think, this sounds a little off. Sometimes I panic and think my speakers must be blown. I need to go out and replace them.
Of course, yes, we are lucky they recorded almost all these shows. We all know there are all kinds of different results of the shows and recordings for various reasons. I would think there is no way Norman finished mastering 10/18/72 and texted Dave and said you can't believe how good this sounds. I could be wrong.
I totally hear what you are saying on the 71 shows OB. Some of them definitely have a different sound to them, Dick's 35, RT#1.3. Great, but different. And then I compare them to the 71 Port Chester shows which sound incredible and are some of my alll time favorites.

Jim, sorry to hear about the issues you are having, definitely hard stuff to deal with.

Let me offer up Charlie Miller's 100th show for tomorrow, 6/16/90. There is a newer version from the man himself from 2019 and the version from VFTV III.

So I saved.. squirrelled, pinched pennies for 45 years and finally dropped the dime on my dream system I have been planning for all these years. I went completely with Fender Amps on the recommendation of some guy named Hal and now I read this.

What are these McIntosh items of which you speak?

I’ll try to check some more of these audio anomalies out this WE.
Hit me with examples if ya got em.

Ive noticed this phenomenon with other recordings, think mostly 71-72s.
Definitely could be tape degradation and/or perhaps a little oversaturated originally, but I think there’s amp distortion going on too? They were still mostly using dirty fender power at this stage. So like any real Rock and roller by the end of the night the amps are on 11 etc and with those old tube power sections/power supplies their easy to overdrive.
By 73 they had pretty much fully switched to big McIntosh power amps, though they were still using the Fenders for pre amps. Like your pre amp at home though, you wouldn’t be pushing the pre amp that much (let the power amp do the heavy lifting). Think overworking a small car engine versus barely stepping on a big V8.
Could be compromised cabling somewhere. Could be dirty and/or insufficient venue power too? That’s the problem with E lic tri city though, could be a number of things. Probably a bit of all the above…

Yep BC, glad your digging the nice February weather. These days where it’s sunny and up in the 30s, “it’s gold Jerry, gold I tell ya! I should try to check out the ole St Louie, Louie, box, another I’ve barely been introduced too.
Hoping 🤞I might be getting a little quality time off soon.

The '72 shows from the not quite the Fox Box have been in and out of the disc drive several times the past few weeks. All great for sure. I know first run through that it was the 10/19 jam that really kinda floored me. Yesterday listening to 10/18 again with the sound quality question in mind. One thing that struck me was that Keith sounded muddy and almost sort of kind of out of tune. I pay a lot of attention to Keith's playing, especially the "earlier days." Something was off and my guess was it was a SBD thing, how he was miked, and not Keith. (Edit - or as Jim suggests maybe some tape degradation.) Bobby's guitar also sounded a bit fuzzed in a recording artifact kind of way, though not unpleasant in any sense. But none of that stopped me from a thoroughly enjoyable listen. There was a point during the Dark Star where I was suddenly in a zone of complete wonder - a place that reminded me of my first deep "now I understand" listen to the Rotterdam Dark Star (on my weird balance SBD many many years before the box.) A really very cool place to be inside the music. So yes, that Disc 2 is some serious magic. One thing struck me as funny is Donna's yell in the Playing Reprise. I have no issues with her singing in those early days, truly dig it. And that Donna Playing ROAR was maybe the most primal vocalization I've ever heard from her. She was feeling the "Holy Spirit" big time!! Loved her quick soft little "Thank you Thank you Thank you" after it was all said and done. Another truly epic jam sequence.
Listening to 10/19 Disc 1 right now this morning. Keith is hard right - i think he was slightly left of center 10/18. A little lower in the mix, tone sounds better to my ear. I'd have to do a hard A / B to be sure that my thoughts are correct on that. Now on Sugaree and Keith's piano and Jerry's vocals have now moved to center of the sound stage. I think Keith sounds a little better than 10/18 but still a tiny bit muffled? Maybe its my brain, who knows.
Thanks DV for suggesting 10/18 awhile ago. I feel like these are my first really good deep listens to the '72 shows from that box. Like you said, great stuff. I ran through '73 a week or so ago and need to revisit that. At the time I remember thinking that the '72 resonated with me more and given that '73 is generally a big fat sweet spot for me I know that my head may have been ever so slightly out of alignment.
To echo KeithFan over on the 45 thread - I'm really really digging Dave's 45. Spectacular sound. Great playing. Boy are we some lucky Deadheads. It was 10/1 Set II that really got me first run through. The Black Peter is so freaking gorgeous. And then the "random current" of that CB or whatever for a couple seconds and its like oh my freaking goodness. I can only laugh. Really, Universe? I first heard 1/31 NOLA last year while exploring a little around the 2/6/70 Fox (personal favorite.) I remember being very pleasantly surprised to find that they played that acoustic set. I think every single acoustic set they have in the vault needs to be released. Gave 1/31 acoustic another run through Sunday morning. Woke up from a short nap late Sunday afternoon and had Sawmill chorus running through my head again and again. I"m like "What is this song? where do I know it from? Oh Yeah, Bobby sings it on 1/31!" Talk about a poor boy, talk about a poor boy, let me have a dollar bill.
Nice Poster Oro!! Your first show! Glad that the Almanac shone a light on your post - hadn't seen it. Another beautiful day here in paradise. Always loved this time of year in the high desierto. Onward!!

I have to revisit this.. but I think I recalled thinking something similar and attributed it to someone spinning the master reel a couple times too many before they locked it away. All three nights are good, but 10/18 is probably my favorite of the bunch, it would not surprise me a bit that someone on the inside thought so too. That and the BCT shows a month and a half earlier are both special runs from a special year.

For kicks and giggles.. check out the Morning Dew from 5/26/72 at the Lyceum from the E72 box and then listen to it from the version on Europe 72. There is static on the box set version where the original sounds crystal clear. The masters degrade especially when people with two left thumbs (like me) handle them. A lot of the early shows suffer from this, listen to 4/18/70 (the Mountain Girl returned reels) sound and frankly a lot of 69.

Well, at least someone remembered to hit record. Didn't Sony or one of the other music houses have their entire archive burn down a decade or so ago? Image the horror if GD masters were lost in a fire.🔥🔥🔥😭

Been gone a bit lately.. spending quality time in the hospital with my aging parents. They seem to be on the mend though, which puts me back home and in good spirits. I hope to participate more as I get back on line with work and fun.

Thanks for keeping the train a rollin' guys.

here's my pick for the day, a day late, well, it is still 11-28 for about 8 mins.
I was at this show and we were tripping balls, Jerry's voice is pure butter during this Florida run and so is his exceptional playing. enjoy

I'm hip to some 1980 Dead, another trip back to Florida sounds fun.

That Slipknot! on 5/22/77 just kills me. So good, it's imprinted on my psyche. And hearing the "Inspiration" just come shining out of the fog, that's the stuff.

DV - I'd love some rereleases of the incomplete shows, but I think that type of reengineering effort is not top of mind. Rather we continue to go Further!

As a want to be archivist, I really appreciate Dave's approach of not releasing stuff unless they can do it right, which wouldn't of been possible without Dick's trailblazing efforts to begin releasing this material in the first place. Alas the 5/22/77 release was a gear in the cog to get where we are now. The new transfer has the reel flip in Eyes patched now. Aww.. the Dead Head freak nature of obsessing about minutia, I scoffed at it once and now it's a part of me.

Also, that Pink Floyd Dark Side doc was great! Thanks for the tip, I enjoyed that.

Bob T - Putting those Blue Suede Shoes back on and hitting the road again! December '73?
Feels like you'd have to kick it off with 11/30 for sure. Maybe I can get catch a ride and get some tickets at the shows? Boston could be Sold Out though from the looks of things... hmmm.

Ever heard the 11/28/73 Jerry & Mickey dated material from the Palace of Fine Arts? I was just looking at December '73 run and noticed it. Seastones performances with Phil & Ned, I might have to listen to that again. I think it circulates with Tarot outtakes. Some weird shit.

Okay now I'm ramblin'...
Lil surprised that the location I was looking for today on 30 DOTD wasn't listed. How can be?

Don't want to give away anything, but that should be corrected, but not if it means I got it wrong cause I chose the only other option. If you haven't given the track a spin, do! It's a freakin' epic version and it was off my radar.

Good stuff.

PS - UNKLE SAM - Got any 11/28/80 tripping stories?

Hey now everyone, as requested, here is a rundown on the 11-28-80 Lakeland Civic Center show.
It was a Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the boys had just done a show down in Pembroke Pines that we did not travel to, but we heard it was a scorcher. Having had Thrusday off for Thanksgiving I nor any of our party had to work that day and we left around noon for the hour and a half drive to the Center. We were looking forward to this show as we had traveled up to Atlanta back in April of this year to see the boys at the Fox Theatre, but that's another story.
It was a beautiful day, about 75 and sunny with a few clouds and a bit of a breeze. The traffic was constant but not heavy on the way west to Lakeland from Orlando.
My parents at the time lived in Lakeland and I knew the town pretty good so we slid into the Center from the back way down 33 off of I-4, which was a great way to get to the Civic Center, knida like the back door.
As we arrived we could see that it was not too crowded, there were heads here and there throwing frisbees and listening to music, but all in all for the early afternoon, not to crowded, yet. It did fill up later on but we liked to get to shows early so we could get good seats, and we had fine seats up off the floor on Jerry's side about half way back. I always brought my binoculars with us so we could get some good looks at the boys and the equipment.
Of course we came loaded for bear and had the usual paraphernalia with us, some good smoke, a wine sack full of sangria and tequila mixed the way the Spanish did it and of course some doses, Purple or Red dragons, can't remember the color now, but they were good.
As we enter the Arena about 6 or so we walked right in which was a bit strange because Lakeland had become the place where there was always a big heat presence at shows, especially Grateful Dead shows and when we didn't see but a couple cops, we were relieved and walked right in, no pat down or searches. {Turns out they were all inside dressed like heads, undercover).
The lights went down and we dropped the doses and they opened with Jack Straw which during the line we can share the women we can share the wine we broke out the wine sack that my buddy had smuggled into the place under his arm and slung over his shoulder and cover by his jean jacket. Sangria and tequila is quite a potent mix but it is also quite sweet, so down it went in no time. After Jack Straw came just one of the best Peggy-O's ever, Jerry's voice was pure butter and his playing was top notch. Then into little red rooster where Bobby again fucked up his slide work and it took Jerry stepping in to help out to finish the song. Jerry could play some slide, unlike Bobby, who kind of just raked it over the strings. Then Tennessee Jed, which the crowd got into, most of them being from the south and they could relate to this song, once again Jerry in fine form, punching out the vocals with great pronunciation. A good Jed for sure. A killer Passenger followed, with Phil just up and down the neck like he was playing a lead guitar, awesome. Then came Deep Elem Blues, a favorite of mine and done electrically, which was rare and quite good, Bobby in good form for this one and the next one which was Looks Like Rain, again done very well and the set ends with a smoking Deal, with Jerry tearing it up, a big star beside that one and a great set ender like it always was.
By this time the doses had taken hold and we were wasted, laid back in our seats and just toe tapping and smiling, good times for sure, the lights came up and we headed to the drink line and I went to the long bathroom line, standing there tripping was to say the least, weird, a lot of folks were off too, but some were screaming for doses and looked like they weren't having such a good time, I shied away from the rabble rousers and did what I came for and walked among the heads during intermission. That was fun, found a cool tee shirt that had a skull smoking a joint and "on the road again" under the skull, a cool shirt with the only color being the red dot on the end of the joint.
Back to my seat and the light went down and Jerry starts with this killer wah wah that leads into Feel like a Stranger, an excellent version, check it out if you have a copy of the show from the 30 trips box, it is trippy and different and very cool. The song ends the crowd goes crazy and then Jerry starts off To Lay me Down and the crown goes quiet, you could hear a pin drop as Jerry pours out his heart and soul into the song and his guitar work is out of this world. An awesome version of another tune that they had not done for quite a while. After that deafening applause comes Let it Grow into a fantastic Terrapin Station, wow, just...wow. The song continues into Drums and Mickey and Billy tear it up, lots of folks get up and head out but I loved the drums>space part of the show and I sat there mesmerized as the beast with 8 arms rears it head and performs it magic. The space is short but it goes into Not Fade away with Brent holding down the keys with some sustain and with that the tune slow forms and then burst out on us like an exploding sun, "I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be....." everyone's up and rocking now. A beautiful Black Peter follows and once again Jerry's voice is like butter, loved this year with Jerry being on so many times. Sugar Magnolia takes us home with a U.S. Blues encore to send us out dancing. A great show and the exit was fun as the moo's coming from the crowd as we piled out making me laugh hard. Still tripping we sat in the parking lot smoking joints until we thought we could drive, and we did, all the way back to Orlando with three mile smiles on our faces.

Wowsa, forgot how hot DPs 3 is! Not always a big 77 guy but this one and the Swing always hit me like Britney!
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but sometimes I kinda like the chopped Dicks (ooooopps, stepped in it that time lol)
Honestly, as the years continue I’m increasingly editing my picks down to the more meat & pertators. I guess it’s preferable to have the whole show and then edit to taste? But I don’t mind them so much as long as they are in order or keep the show flow somewhat. I never liked the cut ups ala burrows versions with only certain songs from different nights in weird trac orders...but yeah, I need to hear some of that again! Great Pick!

11/28/80 sounds good! I’ve been lingering on DaP 8 to compare that matrix with the newDaves after all the hoopla about it. It does sound good but so far I think 8 is a tad too dry while 36 is a tad too wet. But that’s me as I prefer a good matrix! So since I’m in that zone, and I haven’t spent much time with 11/28, hell I’ve still not listened to probably half of boxilla, Doooaaahh! So,
Onward!

Oh, Sammy, thanks for sharing!

Doodle oh (Arnold Horeshack) so looking for opions here, if we could only get a “smaller” Fall 72 box, what part would you choose now that several of you have taken that Pepsi challenge? Lazy minds wanna know!

UNKLE SAM - Great story! I'm impressed with the details you recall. Did you take notes on that one? Curious if you're able to conjure all those memories or if you documented some of them to help keep them so fresh and vivid. So far you're spot on. That Jack Straw, Peggy-O are signaling a fun time ahead. Thanks for sharing man, I really enjoyed reading that. And Jerry just rips right in to his Rooster solo :)

This show is sounding sweet today. I really like the next 2 nights too and am thinking I need to re-visit 11/26 as well.
Nice pick!

Fun.

OB: I’d love to see if it’s possible to release 11/19, 22, 24, they’re all worthy, don’t think 11/26 is in Vault. That being said they all suffer from some unfortunate reel flips and not a lot, if any, patch options. Based on what has already been released I don’t see much happening on this front. But… the 3 shows mentioned are must haves for any worthy GD collection. And the boots we’ve got are good.

I need to go back and do all of October ’72 to really give an opinion on that month. 10/18 in particular is on my re-listen list. So.. basically blah blah blah, I love November ’72!

One show from this time period I’d really like to see released is 9/16/72 and I know it’s on Dave’s radar. The PITB is one of my all time faves and the Dark Star > Brokedown is essential listening. Great great show.

Too Much! Really, too much!

Had a nice listen today. I like the song selection and the performance.

Funny.. as I was working and listening and the Feel Like a Stranger kicked off the second set, I had this thought about Stranger as a second set opener.. when the lights go down and the second set starts.. if you dosed, that's when it really starts kicking in and what a great song this is when that moment overtakes you.

I wondered how many people in the crowd had that feeling that night. ... then I read pretty much the same situation in Sam's recount of the show. You Know It's Gonna Get Stranger, So Let's Get on with the Show....

Jim-curiously I had exactly the experience you are describing when I saw the Dead in London 10/3/81. Unexpectedly, someone in the crowd I had never seen before offered me a dose just before the first set. We pass this way but once...
And Stranger kicked off the second set.

We used to have fun trying to guess when they’d start, rarely on time, so we could drop an hour before. That way its just coming on as the show starts, the first disorienting scary peak was around when they and the sound would start to really mesh near the peak at the end of the first, and the second bigger peak would be at start of second, with third and usually last big wave around space, Perhaps one more for the big finish.
Usually, as long as you guessed the start right, the rest would all line up..

EDIT: ooopps, and 11/28/80 was fine, need more time with that one too. So many great shows I barely know : (

My first show (4/19/82) had a stranger second set opener.

I had never seen the dead before, got tickets last minute and didn't really have a chance to check them out. I listened to Terrapin Station once in the car and knew of the studio versions of UJB and Casey Jones. I am not sure what I was expecting, perhaps aged hippies sitting on stools playing acoustic guitars.. As we were walking to our seats someone in a dark corner under a stairwell caught our attention so by timing it, for us that night meant 25 min before the first song give or take?? At the opening moments of the second set it kicked into high gear and a part of me wished I had taken one instead of two.

Good times, I had no idea what I was in store for.

At the suggestion of a few here I re-watched the making of Dark Side of the Moon last night while planning the next phase of my home project. Gilmour said something that took to me, something to the effect that he wished he could have listened to that album start to finish for the first time without knowing it. That sums up my first dead show, I saw a quite good show from start to finish fully on board, eyes swirling in the back of my head without any idea really what they were about. And that was it for me, they still fascinate me.. I thoroughly enjoyed Lakeland.

What's in store today? Hey.. did we do Gainesville yet, it's kissing cousin?

If you didn’t know any songs at your first show, at least you knew “The Raven”.
It’s grate that you got to see that for your first.
Unless you thought that poetry during Space was normal and you were disappointed at your second show when there wasn’t any poetry.

...” At the opening moments of the second set it kicked into high gear and a part of me wished I had taken one instead of two.” lol. How many times have we heard that one 😀 Did you hear the “it’s gonna get stranger line” and if so...?
I was a late bloomer, didn’t trip till my tenth show.

GAINSVILLE ! I’m down, I think I’ve only heard that once?

They did play Terrapin Station that night, so I sort of knew at least one song. What a fun night..

Less than a year later we were already lying to our parents about where we were and taking their family cars when the band was playing within say a 3 - 5 hour radius. Thank god nothing ever went wrong.. That phone call to the rents would have sucked, "what do you mean the car got towed, what state are in again!!.. I forget at what age I started telling them the truth, probably after I had my own car.

Of course this pales in comparison to HendrixFreak hitchhiking with no food and little money all over the East Coast at about the same age.. I guess these were simpler times and our parents made the fundamental mistake of trusting us.

It's nice that the sound check is included on this one. I think this show came up on these boards a year or so ago, I still have it one of these devices. In fact, I think I reworked all three shows from this run because the Dicks Picks was not a complete show.

So I have these nice and tidy in my electronic stash, always a good thing.

seem to file things away that you would think you would forget. No, I did not remember some of that story, I listen to the show and then I checked the set list and then I called a couple of the guys who were with us that nite. Unfortunately, 2 of the 4 are no longer with us but the other two did remember some things I had totally forgotten. It was fun revisiting that show and the set list and the music itself. I did remember the t shirt and the set break part and I did remember the Jack Straw opener with the wine sack full of sangria and tequila, hard to forget that buzz.
I didn't start taking notes on shows until about 85, at least that is all I can find now, on faded paper and kinda sloppily jotted down with crude pictures on those early ones.
I agree, what about Gainesville? That was also a fantastic show, we were there too as we had such a blast at Lakeland we just stayed up and drove up to Gainesville the following day (those dragons were kinda speedy). Didn't have tickets even though I knew some of the frat boys who requested the dead to play their homecoming dance. We stayed in the lot the entire show, but there were a few others out there (around 100 or so that I saw) and the student union had set up speakers in the back of the student union hall and we got to hear the music for free, it was a fine show and one that I would love to have gotten into, but after staying up for 36 -48 hours, I was wasted by the end of it all and crashed hard in the backseat of that old 63 buick 88. It was like sleeping on your couch in your living room, it was that comfortable. Hey Dave, free the Gainesville tapes, what do you say mate?

Just on Mexicali now. This few months of shows - November and December '73 might well be the high point of the whole endeavor. They sound so relaxed and dialed into each other. Everyone bubbles up to have their say and then goes back to the supporting role.

Jerry's voice is so good. Bobby has that nice warm sound as someone mentioned on one of these threads recently. He hasn't yet transitioned away from the big warm 335 sound to that trebely cutting tone (which is all his own) . And he's playing constantly with great fills and voicings. Starting in 74 and certainly after the break he was picking his spots a lot more.

Keith is playing tastefully. Billy could be turned up a bit (i'm listening to the Charlie Miller) but the recording is good. Phil is still singing a bunch of harmony.

So good.

Ditto what dvikes said. It sucks to lose power in the winter, been there done that.

We are getting quite the storm here now..

Had fun with 12/1. The PITB>UJB>PITB was probably the highlight, but China>Rider through the WRS/Let it Grow was outstanding. Fun little show, love that late 73 vibe. We are gonna have to do 12/18 on it's bday.

Boston today. I may include Denver 12/2/71. Recently listened to Tempe, AZ. from 11/25/73. Then Tucson April 1969. 1969 Dark Star was powerful while the full moon rose a couple evenings ago.
Stay warm.

I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out!
Would love to hear from anyone there about what all was going on?
Folks obviously hangin where they shouldn’t, but when the band has to plead for the perpetrators to leave cause the nice guys in blue here really don’t want to have to hurt ya etc, and they still don’t leave lol. I think they even threatened to stop playing and they still wouldn’t leave! Hee-hee ya gotta love massholes (and I mean that as a term of endearment. My fathers people and several friends are from there)
So recently we had an outright brawl with Billy getting the third man in penalty, and now this wonderful sideshow...who knew! Just gotta poke around!
Fun show, tempted to pick highlights from Dick’s 14, but strider mentioning 69 somehow Jedi mastered me toward Dicks 16 I believe from 11/8/69....
Ole Ladies working from home so I’ll have to see what will piss her off less ; )

Dig it!
12/2 double down in Boston.
12/2/71 sounds fun Strider & that 11/25/73 PITB is all killer no filler. Might have to dust that off too.

Dug into 12/1/73 yesterday and there's really nothing wrong with that show. Love late '73 Phil harmonies, especially on Half-Step. Had to pop on 11/30 right after and just can't get enough of that WRS > Dark Star Jam > Eyes.
Good Stuff

BTW we must've conjured up some 9/16/72 magic! New SBD material showed up in circulation. I wonder how much of that show DL has in the Vault? Seems like we've got all but first 4 1/2 songs from SBD in circulation now.
Dark Star > Brokedown trans is patched now. It's such a Golden Age for Dead fiends. Hot Dog!

Where do I start... tough choices.
It's good to be a head.

EDIT - OB yeah totally was digging the banter, Jerry is freaking funny. "We gotta go through this lame trip together" 123 Lame Out!
UNKLE SAM - Nice work man, called up some old pals and everything. I dig the extra effort and the recall. Much appreciated. November '80 is some good stuff.

Anyone know what Bob was referring to 47 years ago today b4 the set II opener of Wharf Rat!!!! Thanks for the concern also with the power outage!! Fortunately we were on the warm side!! 60 degrees at midnight Monday!! Bob t

Man, just did quick highlight trip through DP 14. I’d say both of those disc 2s can stand with almost any disc 2/3? released! Perhaps some of those 72s would nudge em out but not by much...
As much as some of the 69 trips are awesome in their own way, and the consistent machine like greatness of 77, and the late era glory of summer 89- 90, they just had so much versatility in fall 73. Sure you still have the big Dark Stars, Other Ones, Playin’s and last of the cool Pig Jams in 72, but 73 has WRS, Eyes, Here Comes Sunshine, Half Steps, even bigger, weirder jazzy space jams, AND the 72 stuff, sans Pen of course...
Tech/gear wise I think they hit a sweet spot too. Wont rehash about all that we recently discussed, but generally I think it’s a step up from 72 with the pre mini wall etc, but not the full on monster that for good or sometimes ill soon followed in 74.

Perhaps a nice distraction whilst we wait....
What tour, overall, do you think was the greatest. I mean a whole tour, not a subset or say the retirement shows etc, but the best whole tour?

Up next is fine DP 16. Listened a lot when I first picked this up a couple years ago, but have neglected since. Another top dog fo shoor!

Oh, and GAINSVILLE was perhaps better the second time I finally listened to it the other day!
Unkle Sammy scores again!

chefdarkstar - Far Out, I didn't realize there was an archive app.

Speaking of this Day in Dead History. 1981-12-03 rips in my opinion!
And you've got the DaP release of 1979-12-03.
I'm feeling '81 if anyone wants a tasty Scarlet > Fire > Estimated > He's Gone > D> S> Spanish Jam > Truckin' > Black Peter blast out.

In regards to the 1973 December tour, it's a well deserved day off today. After listening to 11/30 & 12/2, I kinda get why I haven't spent a lot of time on 12/1. Talk about standing in the shadow of giants. I agree with OB 11/30 & 12/2, wowzers! The X factor happening on those shows.

Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the tracking listing on 12/2. In my highly biased eyes, that's a 37:48 minute Playing In The Band with a Mind Left Body themed jam included at the end. But the way it's tracked it's just a measly 12:09 minute Playin' into a 15:39 minute Jam. Hmmm... again, not sure how I feel about that. :)

Alright, thanks for the tip on the app and good to see you here Chefdarkstar!

If anybody wants to anniversary trip 12/3/81 would be fun.

Cool beans. I know 12/5 smokes so interesting to see about this one.
Oh, forgot, yeah, 12/1 is ok, but I can see why it didn’t get used...the Playin space is cool, but like elsewhere they just sorta phizzle. I liked it, but it definitely doesn’t stand up to 11/30, 12/2, or much of the tour really.
Glad I finally checked it out!

I'm in.. I've been hankerin' for a hot Scarlet Fire. I had a small family matter to attend to in and around Baltimore, in and out.. so a big crappy drive. 5/26/72 got me through it. Time to change things up with a hot 81 side street and I have things to do tonight that lend themselves well to listening while working. The pieces of the universe are fitting together nicely today.

Edit: Enjoying this immensely. Nice find, decent recording for the period. Nice and clean.. reminds me a bit of the Salt Palace - Salt Lake City show from a few months earlier... which is also worth checking out. I sort of prefer the Salt Palace, but parts of that show seem to be missing the soundboards. What is there is pretty sweet though.

Still, thanks for turning me on to this show. Quite enjoyable. 1981. They were playing some more than one song segments from the Nassau '81 Dicks Picks on SiriusXM the last few days. 81 must be in the air this week. Have fun all..

Baby Blue *
* Jerry is so feeling it on 12/3/81, throughout the show, but big time on this Baby Blue, best '80s version? Best version ever? Not sure about any of that, but a great version for sure. Gans used it on Postcards.

What'd you all think of the show?

The set 2 is a fave, and it's one of those shows where it's possibly even hotter post drums. Not sure. Bob & his whistle, I need to get a date range in my head of when he used that damn thing. He's got it in English Town '77. Anyhooo... glad you all checked it out. Bands on fire in December '81. 12/3 is one of those shows that will make you collect the whole year to see how many more are like that. And there's quite a few that are of that ilk, but it's special.

Good stuff.

12/4/73 set list looks like an incomplete show for '73. Every time I look at it I think what's missing? Johnny B. Goode opener. 17 song show. Pretty sure they were playing 17 songs in Set 1 in the summer.

9 songs released on Winterland '73 bonus CD. (rare lil collectible these days?)

I wonder how tour is going for Bob T and if he was able to get from Boston to Cincinnati? I got separated from him at the Boston show, but he was tripping for sure!

This day in GD history:
1969 - *First Black Peter & Uncle John's Band (w Vocals) - * on Tape (probably firsts, Fillmore West home turf, but yeah)
1971 - First night of legendary Felt Forum 4 night Run
1988 - Neil Young joins Jerry & Bob for Wang Dang Doodle at Bridge School Benefit. Bob & Jer play FOTD, Throwing Stones & Ripple.

And there you have it folks, morning update as I procrastinate.

PS - Jam of the Week has the sweet 6/14/84 Shakedown > Playing > Fantasy today.. never get tired of listening to that one. Happy Friday All!

Today's show would be a good one to skip over!!! From what i have read the band was really late. The Bonus CD from the Winterland 73 box has the best parts. (I did listen to this whole show this morning!) Catch you all in Cleveland on the 6th!!! I also listened to the Jam of the Week!! Good call. Have a good weekend everyone, rest up for that 46 minute Dark Star heading out way on 12/6/73!!!! Try to find me in CLeveland, I will be wearing a Buddy Bell jersey!! Bob t

Good show GOGD. 81, another year to pick through. So much great music. That whistle and how about the sex change line in this version of Truckin. Never heard that before. Solid Black Peter.

How does 6/17/91 strike you all? From the 48 multi track masters.

The ole Pointed Head is gonna be on Reddit this am at 10:30 pst doing an AMA jsyk -
https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/k50kxw/hello_friends_i_a…

Ah, late start explains a lot. I'll try and still make Cincinnati, but will definitely see you in Denver. I'll be wearing my rainbow beanie with a spinner on top ;)

Giants Stadium Multi tracks sound pretty tasty any day.

Love me some Multi Track!

I think I can make room for all that GOGD.

Be Well All.

Oh good call, and I know this will sound worse than I mean it (sorry) but isn’t this the “pick of the day” versus on this day in Dead history, like, don’t they already have that? Just a thought....perhaps getting a little too predictable, or maybe it’s just me? Sorry...
So I was actually thinking I really need some Dead/video experience after digging the Friday night Shakedowns this summer, but I couldn’t decide what, so bing!!! I come here and DV does it again!
So I’m going to save that for tonight on the big screen and yes, luxuriate in that ridiculous Blu-ray hi-res audio!
First, it sounds like I need to circle round to 12/3/81 again, such hyperbole, oy! Lol
Unfortunately I didn’t get to finish post drums and really didn’t get a good listen, but what I did was prime 81.
So there’s that, the 12/4/73 highlight disc which I like, and 12/6/73 coming up, plus I haven’t gotten fully with DaP 36 either, lol, so poof, just like that there’s probably all the dead I’ll be able to get too this weekend!
So much Dead, so little time...especially cause mamas getting a little burnt on the dead, so I’ve had to schedule more stealth listens lol...

If anyone has a few minutes to kill in between full shows.. check out at least the partial of this one:

https://archive.org/details/gd1981-08-12.sbd.130235.MrBill.flac16/gd198…

The soundboard doesn't kick in until 38 seconds into Friend of the Devil.. but check out the Scarlet>Fire and Morning Dew. Well anything after Jack-A-Roe. A really clean soundboard for '81 and the show is pretty good. While we are on an 81 groove, might as well stretch it out a bit.

Did you guys know that Joe Friday never actually said Just The Facts Ma'am?

That was actually Dan Aykroyd on the reboot.

However, time has meshed the two... that is if you even know who Joe Friday is or Dragnet for that matter.

Anyhow... I was just saying, cause I happened to notice them there facts on this date.

I won't do it again, honest I won't.

(Don't hold me to that, I might do it again ;)

But never fear POD is not in jeopardy. Though sadly Alex Trebek has left the building.

Remember TV?!?!

OB: Man if we knew that... well shit!

Ken Babbs says the following and I quote:
The most important thing is to be happy and do the things that make you happy.

So, here we are my friend.

The Salt Pally... '81 is a ripping year.

So much Dead!!
I'm starting to sweat. I gotta get out of here.

UNKLE - You are correct sir!

I've got a recent watch of my cousin vinny under my belt. I can defend you.

There, that should free you up to get some plaster rattling time in before Mrs. Oroborous gets home.

There are a couple more cuts on the Salt Palace I had forgotten about.. a good portion of Estimated is patched, and it's a ripping version too.. plus the first couple minutes of Eyes. The Morning Dew is exceptional. Really USDA Grade A stuff.

I love all your “ramblings” and I mean that in a good way! I look forward to your enlightening us! It’s like old school reading the paper or having morning coffee with my friends!
I’ve kinda never been this immersed in the Dead until the last few years here. Gear and sound geek, always, went to as many shows as I reasonably could, have read everything I could and have a decent library, but I’ve never been quite at the level of devotion and subsequent deep dives as some of you. never really been a “computer” person either, so way behind on that tack that you guys bring such an interesting wealth of great information, especially the silly and out there stuff! So please, keep it coming.
Between all y’all’s information, and great old timers like Strider, BTK, Bolo (where art though?) etc making us drool with stories from golden years, where else can you get such friendly, informative and interesting kicks! THANKS
My little, very little mind you, critique is only that perhaps we’ve just gotten a little predictable with our picks? I mean most people know many of these “big” shows inside out, so to me at least the Beauty of this forum for instance, is when Slow Dog turns us onto that hot Glassberg 81, or we hit that 12/1 73 for good or ill, or DHB or DV calls out a official release like this 91 that we may not usual think of......most of all, to be surprised, and turned on to new and often off the beaten path stuff; Billy getting in to fights, weird hippie girls putting sweaters on Jerry...let’s face it, after alll these years, isn’t it most fun to get turned on to new and interesting things?
Hey the go to stuff is always just a click away, but to me the thing that makes this special is getting turned on to the unknown!
I guess you could argue that can work both ways as evident by y’all’s recent fall 72 trip as it came about partly because of the calendar...of course I think HF has us all thinking more and more about some kind of “fall 72 box” and being that could cover several months, which probably isn’t practical (sorry HF lol) so of course a fuller understanding of this time period helps enlighten such discussions, like what most likely that box would look like etc?
Sorry, too much coffee and nervous energy, I wish this gal would call already...

Some full episodes of that turned up on Archive recently, might start there as I hadn't see the full show before.

It's a trip!

Learning lots. Prior to this year, I was completely focused on collecting the "tapes". But at the end of last year I finished up '94 and was done (you're never done, but you know what I mean?), and that dove tailed into this year being supremely strange and psychedelic and getting the opportunity to be able to listen to all this wonderful stuff and hang out with you all, so it's been really cool to explore different facets of this jewel and do some deep dives on the "facts" behind all these great shows. I'm loving it!

This year I've definitely turned a corner in my GD habits, for good or ill... we will see :)

BTW you all are great, keep up the good work!
