That Slipknot! on 5/22/77 just kills me. So good, it's imprinted on my psyche. And hearing the "Inspiration" just come shining out of the fog, that's the stuff.

DV - I'd love some rereleases of the incomplete shows, but I think that type of reengineering effort is not top of mind. Rather we continue to go Further!

As a want to be archivist, I really appreciate Dave's approach of not releasing stuff unless they can do it right, which wouldn't of been possible without Dick's trailblazing efforts to begin releasing this material in the first place. Alas the 5/22/77 release was a gear in the cog to get where we are now. The new transfer has the reel flip in Eyes patched now. Aww.. the Dead Head freak nature of obsessing about minutia, I scoffed at it once and now it's a part of me.

Also, that Pink Floyd Dark Side doc was great! Thanks for the tip, I enjoyed that.

Ever heard the 11/28/73 Jerry & Mickey dated material from the Palace of Fine Arts? I was just looking at December '73 run and noticed it. Seastones performances with Phil & Ned, I might have to listen to that again. I think it circulates with Tarot outtakes. Some weird shit.

Hey now everyone, as requested, here is a rundown on the 11-28-80 Lakeland Civic Center show.
It was a Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the boys had just done a show down in Pembroke Pines that we did not travel to, but we heard it was a scorcher. Having had Thrusday off for Thanksgiving I nor any of our party had to work that day and we left around noon for the hour and a half drive to the Center. We were looking forward to this show as we had traveled up to Atlanta back in April of this year to see the boys at the Fox Theatre, but that's another story.
It was a beautiful day, about 75 and sunny with a few clouds and a bit of a breeze. The traffic was constant but not heavy on the way west to Lakeland from Orlando.
My parents at the time lived in Lakeland and I knew the town pretty good so we slid into the Center from the back way down 33 off of I-4, which was a great way to get to the Civic Center, knida like the back door.
As we arrived we could see that it was not too crowded, there were heads here and there throwing frisbees and listening to music, but all in all for the early afternoon, not to crowded, yet. It did fill up later on but we liked to get to shows early so we could get good seats, and we had fine seats up off the floor on Jerry's side about half way back. I always brought my binoculars with us so we could get some good looks at the boys and the equipment.
Of course we came loaded for bear and had the usual paraphernalia with us, some good smoke, a wine sack full of sangria and tequila mixed the way the Spanish did it and of course some doses, Purple or Red dragons, can't remember the color now, but they were good.
As we enter the Arena about 6 or so we walked right in which was a bit strange because Lakeland had become the place where there was always a big heat presence at shows, especially Grateful Dead shows and when we didn't see but a couple cops, we were relieved and walked right in, no pat down or searches. {Turns out they were all inside dressed like heads, undercover).
The lights went down and we dropped the doses and they opened with Jack Straw which during the line we can share the women we can share the wine we broke out the wine sack that my buddy had smuggled into the place under his arm and slung over his shoulder and cover by his jean jacket. Sangria and tequila is quite a potent mix but it is also quite sweet, so down it went in no time. After Jack Straw came just one of the best Peggy-O's ever, Jerry's voice was pure butter and his playing was top notch. Then into little red rooster where Bobby again fucked up his slide work and it took Jerry stepping in to help out to finish the song. Jerry could play some slide, unlike Bobby, who kind of just raked it over the strings. Then Tennessee Jed, which the crowd got into, most of them being from the south and they could relate to this song, once again Jerry in fine form, punching out the vocals with great pronunciation. A good Jed for sure. A killer Passenger followed, with Phil just up and down the neck like he was playing a lead guitar, awesome. Then came Deep Elem Blues, a favorite of mine and done electrically, which was rare and quite good, Bobby in good form for this one and the next one which was Looks Like Rain, again done very well and the set ends with a smoking Deal, with Jerry tearing it up, a big star beside that one and a great set ender like it always was.
By this time the doses had taken hold and we were wasted, laid back in our seats and just toe tapping and smiling, good times for sure, the lights came up and we headed to the drink line and I went to the long bathroom line, standing there tripping was to say the least, weird, a lot of folks were off too, but some were screaming for doses and looked like they weren't having such a good time, I shied away from the rabble rousers and did what I came for and walked among the heads during intermission. That was fun, found a cool tee shirt that had a skull smoking a joint and "on the road again" under the skull, a cool shirt with the only color being the red dot on the end of the joint.
Back to my seat and the light went down and Jerry starts with this killer wah wah that leads into Feel like a Stranger, an excellent version, check it out if you have a copy of the show from the 30 trips box, it is trippy and different and very cool. The song ends the crowd goes crazy and then Jerry starts off To Lay me Down and the crown goes quiet, you could hear a pin drop as Jerry pours out his heart and soul into the song and his guitar work is out of this world. An awesome version of another tune that they had not done for quite a while. After that deafening applause comes Let it Grow into a fantastic Terrapin Station, wow, just...wow. The song continues into Drums and Mickey and Billy tear it up, lots of folks get up and head out but I loved the drums>space part of the show and I sat there mesmerized as the beast with 8 arms rears it head and performs it magic. The space is short but it goes into Not Fade away with Brent holding down the keys with some sustain and with that the tune slow forms and then burst out on us like an exploding sun, "I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be....." everyone's up and rocking now. A beautiful Black Peter follows and once again Jerry's voice is like butter, loved this year with Jerry being on so many times. Sugar Magnolia takes us home with a U.S. Blues encore to send us out dancing. A great show and the exit was fun as the moo's coming from the crowd as we piled out making me laugh hard. Still tripping we sat in the parking lot smoking joints until we thought we could drive, and we did, all the way back to Orlando with three mile smiles on our faces.

Wowsa, forgot how hot DPs 3 is! Not always a big 77 guy but this one and the Swing always hit me like Britney!
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but sometimes I kinda like the chopped Dicks (ooooopps, stepped in it that time lol)
Honestly, as the years continue I’m increasingly editing my picks down to the more meat & pertators. I guess it’s preferable to have the whole show and then edit to taste? But I don’t mind them so much as long as they are in order or keep the show flow somewhat. I never liked the cut ups ala burrows versions with only certain songs from different nights in weird trac orders...but yeah, I need to hear some of that again! Great Pick!

11/28/80 sounds good! I’ve been lingering on DaP 8 to compare that matrix with the newDaves after all the hoopla about it. It does sound good but so far I think 8 is a tad too dry while 36 is a tad too wet. But that’s me as I prefer a good matrix! So since I’m in that zone, and I haven’t spent much time with 11/28, hell I’ve still not listened to probably half of boxilla, Doooaaahh! So,

Curious if you're able to conjure all those memories or if you documented some of them to help keep them so fresh and vivid. So far you're spot on. OB: I’d love to see if it’s possible to release 11/19, 22, 24, they’re all worthy, don’t think 11/26 is in Vault. That being said they all suffer from some unfortunate reel flips and not a lot, if any, patch options. Based on what has already been released I don’t see much happening on this front. But… the 3 shows mentioned are must haves for any worthy GD collection. And the boots we’ve got are good.

I need to go back and do all of October ’72 to really give an opinion on that month. 10/18 in particular is on my re-listen list. So.. basically blah blah blah, I love November ’72!

One show from this time period I’d really like to see released is 9/16/72 and I know it’s on Dave’s radar. The PITB is one of my all time faves and the Dark Star > Brokedown is essential listening. Great great show.

Had a nice listen today. I like the song selection and the performance.

Funny.. as I was working and listening and the Feel Like a Stranger kicked off the second set, I had this thought about Stranger as a second set opener.. when the lights go down and the second set starts.. if you dosed, that's when it really starts kicking in and what a great song this is when that moment overtakes you.

I wondered how many people in the crowd had that feeling that night. ... then I read pretty much the same situation in Sam's recount of the show. You Know It's Gonna Get Stranger, So Let's Get on with the Show....

Jim-curiously I had exactly the experience you are describing when I saw the Dead in London 10/3/81. Unexpectedly, someone in the crowd I had never seen before offered me a dose just before the first set. We pass this way but once...
And Stranger kicked off the second set.

We used to have fun trying to guess when they’d start, rarely on time, so we could drop an hour before. That way its just coming on as the show starts, the first disorienting scary peak was around when they and the sound would start to really mesh near the peak at the end of the first, and the second bigger peak would be at start of second, with third and usually last big wave around space, Perhaps one more for the big finish.
Usually, as long as you guessed the start right, the rest would all line up..

EDIT: ooopps, and 11/28/80 was fine, need more time with that one too. So many great shows I barely know : (

My first show (4/19/82) had a stranger second set opener.

I had never seen the dead before, got tickets last minute and didn't really have a chance to check them out. I listened to Terrapin Station once in the car and knew of the studio versions of UJB and Casey Jones. I am not sure what I was expecting, perhaps aged hippies sitting on stools playing acoustic guitars.. As we were walking to our seats someone in a dark corner under a stairwell caught our attention so by timing it, for us that night meant 25 min before the first song give or take?? At the opening moments of the second set it kicked into high gear and a part of me wished I had taken one instead of two.

Good times, I had no idea what I was in store for.

At the suggestion of a few here I re-watched the making of Dark Side of the Moon last night while planning the next phase of my home project. Gilmour said something that took to me, something to the effect that he wished he could have listened to that album start to finish for the first time without knowing it. That sums up my first dead show, I saw a quite good show from start to finish fully on board, eyes swirling in the back of my head without any idea really what they were about. And that was it for me, they still fascinate me.. I thoroughly enjoyed Lakeland.

What's in store today? Hey.. did we do Gainesville yet, it's kissing cousin?

Less than a year later we were already lying to our parents about where we were and taking their family cars when the band was playing within say a 3 - 5 hour radius. Thank god nothing ever went wrong.. That phone call to the rents would have sucked, "what do you mean the car got towed, what state are in again!!.. I forget at what age I started telling them the truth, probably after I had my own car.

Of course this pales in comparison to HendrixFreak hitchhiking with no food and little money all over the East Coast at about the same age.. I guess these were simpler times and our parents made the fundamental mistake of trusting us.

It's amusing that Dave Lemieux completely spaces on Gainesville in the Lakeland 30 Trip liner notes. Can you say 'What about Gainesville'?

seem to file things away that you would think you would forget. No, I did not remember some of that story, I listen to the show and then I checked the set list and then I called a couple of the guys who were with us that nite. Unfortunately, 2 of the 4 are no longer with us but the other two did remember some things I had totally forgotten. It was fun revisiting that show and the set list and the music itself. I did remember the t shirt and the set break part and I did remember the Jack Straw opener with the wine sack full of sangria and tequila, hard to forget that buzz.
I didn't start taking notes on shows until about 85, at least that is all I can find now, on faded paper and kinda sloppily jotted down with crude pictures on those early ones.
I agree, what about Gainesville? That was also a fantastic show, we were there too as we had such a blast at Lakeland we just stayed up and drove up to Gainesville the following day (those dragons were kinda speedy). Didn't have tickets even though I knew some of the frat boys who requested the dead to play their homecoming dance. We stayed in the lot the entire show, but there were a few others out there (around 100 or so that I saw) and the student union had set up speakers in the back of the student union hall and we got to hear the music for free, it was a fine show and one that I would love to have gotten into, but after staying up for 36 -48 hours, I was wasted by the end of it all and crashed hard in the backseat of that old 63 buick 88. It was like sleeping on your couch in your living room, it was that comfortable. Hey Dave, free the Gainesville tapes, what do you say mate?

Just on Mexicali now. This few months of shows - November and December '73 might well be the high point of the whole endeavor. They sound so relaxed and dialed into each other. Everyone bubbles up to have their say and then goes back to the supporting role.

Jerry's voice is so good. Bobby has that nice warm sound as someone mentioned on one of these threads recently. He hasn't yet transitioned away from the big warm 335 sound to that trebely cutting tone (which is all his own) . And he's playing constantly with great fills and voicings. Starting in 74 and certainly after the break he was picking his spots a lot more.

Keith is playing tastefully. Billy could be turned up a bit (i'm listening to the Charlie Miller) but the recording is good. Phil is still singing a bunch of harmony.

So good.

Boston today. I may include Denver 12/2/71. Recently listened to Tempe, AZ. from 11/25/73. Then Tucson April 1969. 1969 Dark Star was powerful while the full moon rose a couple evenings ago.

My fathers people and several friends are from there)

Dug into 12/1/73 yesterday and there's really nothing wrong with that show. Love late '73 Phil harmonies, especially on Half-Step. Had to pop on 11/30 right after and just can't get enough of that WRS > Dark Star Jam > Eyes.

Man, just did quick highlight trip through DP 14. I’d say both of those disc 2s can stand with almost any disc 2/3? released! Perhaps some of those 72s would nudge em out but not by much...
As much as some of the 69 trips are awesome in their own way, and the consistent machine like greatness of 77, and the late era glory of summer 89- 90, they just had so much versatility in fall 73. Sure you still have the big Dark Stars, Other Ones, Playin’s and last of the cool Pig Jams in 72, but 73 has WRS, Eyes, Here Comes Sunshine, Half Steps, even bigger, weirder jazzy space jams, AND the 72 stuff, sans Pen of course...
Tech/gear wise I think they hit a sweet spot too. Wont rehash about all that we recently discussed, but generally I think it’s a step up from 72 with the pre mini wall etc, but not the full on monster that for good or sometimes ill soon followed in 74.

Perhaps a nice distraction whilst we wait....
What tour, overall, do you think was the greatest. I mean a whole tour, not a subset or say the retirement shows etc, but the best whole tour?

Up next is fine DP 16. Listened a lot when I first picked this up a couple years ago, but have neglected since. Another top dog fo shoor!

In regards to the 1973 December tour, it's a well deserved day off today. After listening to 11/30 & 12/2, I kinda get why I haven't spent a lot of time on 12/1. Talk about standing in the shadow of giants. I agree with OB 11/30 & 12/2, wowzers! The X factor happening on those shows.

Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the tracking listing on 12/2. In my highly biased eyes, that's a 37:48 minute Playing In The Band with a Mind Left Body themed jam included at the end. But the way it's tracked it's just a measly 12:09 minute Playin' into a 15:39 minute Jam. Hmmm... again, not sure how I feel about that. :)

I'm in.. I've been hankerin' for a hot Scarlet Fire. I had a small family matter to attend to in and around Baltimore, in and out.. so a big crappy drive. 5/26/72 got me through it. Time to change things up with a hot 81 side street and I have things to do tonight that lend themselves well to listening while working. The pieces of the universe are fitting together nicely today.

Edit: Enjoying this immensely. Nice find, decent recording for the period. Nice and clean.. reminds me a bit of the Salt Palace - Salt Lake City show from a few months earlier... which is also worth checking out. I sort of prefer the Salt Palace, but parts of that show seem to be missing the soundboards. What is there is pretty sweet though.

Still, thanks for turning me on to this show. Quite enjoyable. 1981. They were playing some more than one song segments from the Nassau '81 Dicks Picks on SiriusXM the last few days. 81 must be in the air this week. Have fun all..

The set 2 is a fave, and it's one of those shows where it's possibly even hotter post drums. Not sure. Bob & his whistle, I need to get a date range in my head of when he used that damn thing. He's got it in English Town '77. Anyhooo... glad you all checked it out. Bands on fire in December '81. 12/3 is one of those shows that will make you collect the whole year to see how many more are like that. And there's quite a few that are of that ilk, but it's special.

12/4/73 set list looks like an incomplete show for '73. Every time I look at it I think what's missing? Johnny B. Goode opener. 17 song show. Pretty sure they were playing 17 songs in Set 1 in the summer.

So I was actually thinking I really need some Dead/video experience after digging the Friday night Shakedowns this summer, but I couldn’t decide what, so bing!!! I come here and DV does it again!
So I’m going to save that for tonight on the big screen and yes, luxuriate in that ridiculous Blu-ray hi-res audio!
First, it sounds like I need to circle round to 12/3/81 again, such hyperbole, oy! Lol
Unfortunately I didn’t get to finish post drums and really didn’t get a good listen, but what I did was prime 81.
So there’s that, the 12/4/73 highlight disc which I like, and 12/6/73 coming up, plus I haven’t gotten fully with DaP 36 either, lol, so poof, just like that there’s probably all the dead I’ll be able to get too this weekend!
So much Dead, so little time...especially cause mamas getting a little burnt on the dead, so I’ve had to schedule more stealth listens lol...

The soundboard doesn't kick in until 38 seconds into Friend of the Devil.. but check out the Scarlet>Fire and Morning Dew. Well anything after Jack-A-Roe. A really clean soundboard for '81 and the show is pretty good. While we are on an 81 groove, might as well stretch it out a bit.

There are a couple more cuts on the Salt Palace I had forgotten about.. a good portion of Estimated is patched, and it's a ripping version too.. plus the first couple minutes of Eyes. The Morning Dew is exceptional. Really USDA Grade A stuff.

I’ve kinda never been this immersed in the Dead until the last few years here. Gear and sound geek, always, went to as many shows as I reasonably could, have read everything I could and have a decent library, but I’ve never been quite at the level of devotion and subsequent deep dives as some of you. never really been a “computer” person either, so way behind on that tack that you guys bring such an interesting wealth of great information, especially the silly and out there stuff! So please, keep it coming.
Between all y’all’s information, and great old timers like Strider, BTK, Bolo (where art though?) etc making us drool with stories from golden years, where else can you get such friendly, informative and interesting kicks! THANKS
My little, very little mind you, critique is only that perhaps we’ve just gotten a little predictable with our picks? I mean most people know many of these “big” shows inside out, so to me at least the Beauty of this forum for instance, is when Slow Dog turns us onto that hot Glassberg 81, or we hit that 12/1 73 for good or ill, or DHB or DV calls out a official release like this 91 that we may not usual think of......most of all, to be surprised, and turned on to new and often off the beaten path stuff; Billy getting in to fights, weird hippie girls putting sweaters on Jerry...let’s face it, after alll these years, isn’t it most fun to get turned on to new and interesting things?
Hey the go to stuff is always just a click away, but to me the thing that makes this special is getting turned on to the unknown!
I guess you could argue that can work both ways as evident by y’all’s recent fall 72 trip as it came about partly because of the calendar...of course I think HF has us all thinking more and more about some kind of “fall 72 box” and being that could cover several months, which probably isn’t practical (sorry HF lol) so of course a fuller understanding of this time period helps enlighten such discussions, like what most likely that box would look like etc?

It's a trip!

Learning lots. Prior to this year, I was completely focused on collecting the "tapes". But at the end of last year I finished up '94 and was done (you're never done, but you know what I mean?), and that dove tailed into this year being supremely strange and psychedelic and getting the opportunity to be able to listen to all this wonderful stuff and hang out with you all, so it's been really cool to explore different facets of this jewel and do some deep dives on the "facts" behind all these great shows. I'm loving it!

This year I've definitely turned a corner in my GD habits, for good or ill... we will see :)

BTW you all are great, keep up the good work!
