Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Running a little late, just getting into Set I of of 11-10-73. Bolo, that's quite the Origin Story!! Such a fun vivid picture to have painted for this collective listen. Wow, the sound is dialed in from the get go. Gorgeous. Another great pick o' the day. Disc 3 from the next night was in the road music rotation for a good while, but even that seems like ages ago. Looking forward to the Big Rock Pow Wow - that sequence with He Was A Friend Of Mine is sweet!

    10 was dialed in so from Bertha on the sound was there maybe a few tweaks here and there, they were really able to hear each other very well kinda like 8-24-72 where you can hear all the nuances, and the band played very well. I made it to Eyes from the 9th it was late and things didn't seem to be clicking.

    What a show the 23rd is, how many times did they do St. Stephen>the Eleven outta Dark Star? This is a really good Dark Star and a very nice Morning dew, what's not to like. Plus I think this is the first Casey Jones. I have been to the Seminole Indian Reservation, went to the Phish show down there for the 1999 new years run, but that's a different story. I can only imagine how desolate and out in the middle of nowhere this show must have been, must have been a gas to drive on Alligator Alley to get to this show. I've also seen Alligators and Indians and have experienced Orange Sunshine, just not all together at the same time :)

    11/10/73 - Kidd Candelario’s tricked out 2-Track recording of Winterland ’73 along with Bolo24’s wonderful tale and copious recounts and reviews from GD scholars & fans took me there!

    Said to be “maybe” the best 2-Track recordings from ’73 in the Vault quality wise

    Set 2 Absolutely Rocks and the 1st of 3 PITB > UJB > Morning Dew > UJB > PITB palindrome is definitely the highlight. The rest of the set really sparkles too.
    Really rockin’ Big River, nice Stella, top notch Truckin’ > Wharf > Sugar Mags, OMSN.

    Right before the Encore you hear a fan call for “Casey Jones!” and then “Drivin’ That Train…”
    Ah.. Winterland that hallowed hall, I wish I knew you!

    Ask and you shall be rewarded, right Bolo24?

    Such a great first show story. Thanks again for sharing, I liked that firsthand account as much as the revisit, and the two together… Extra Sweet!

    Yet another reason ’73 is mentioned as a “best” year for the GOGD.

    Alright, onward you say? 5/23 & 24 of 1969 you say? Well, well, well…

    After yesterdays revisit of '73 I'd like to hear that 11/11/73 Dark Star again & 11/17/73 DaP V5 Palindrome #2 again

    So I’ll toss those two out to the wind and let’s see if they make it into our little revisit list..

    But until then I will go with you all to the cosmic year of 1969!

    PS - If no-one wants to listen to the two shows mentioned above 11/11/73 & 11/17/73 then, lmk cause I’ll listen to those in my “spare” time;)

Did you know that the city of Albuquerque, NM hosts the world's largest gathering of hot-air balloons, every October at a venue referred to as Balloon Fiesta Park?

Far out huh?

From the looks of wikipedia, there's tons of other cool facts about Albuquerque as well.

Here's one I didn't see listed,
The GD played the civic auditorium there on November 17, 1971.
A recording of that show would be released as part of the Dave's Picks series in 2018 with bonus material from December 14, 1971. Lucky subscriber's to the Dave's Picks series received a bonus disc with more music from December 14, 1971 and if you put the bonus material together it represents the full show minus Ramble On Rose which opened Set 2.

Well how about that?!?!

Maybe 1971 is in the air like a giant balloon.
Or maybe it's just the Celestial Season happening as Saturn & Jupiter line up.

Just thought I'd share :)

VGuy72 - You guessed my clue!

Feel free to request a calendar from Dead.net
But they'll say.. what are you talking about!?!?!

Not sure if it's the official pick but it looked good to me and it sounds good too. So I'd say it's worth visiting.

BTW - Love the fam avatar!

EDIT: If you do check it out listen for the "Satisfaction" riff after Run Run Rudolph. A 1971 Satisfaction would've been so TIGHT!

Jimi - Not much ’88 has happened here.
1988-07-17 - On 7/1/20 you mentioned the ’88 Greeks and I think we listened to this show. But there was also an '85 show happening. Cool KPFA broadcast gives the full meal deal on this one.
1988-03-27 - On 6/30/20

(However, you may never see this cause I'm editing my old post. So.. we'll learn something here :)

Yeah, I told DL that you all were interested in that tour and he said.. No Problem!

Psyche, never happened, but pretty stoked to get some September '73 this year.

Now... what's next?!?!? :)

I'm a Fiend!

I couldn't resist the call of the '71 today, I know there's been a big early '70s deluge recently. And... I could do that pretty much everyday until I couldn't.

However, yeah switch it up.
I love 12/14/90 Dark Star!
Or '88 is great.

And 12/14/71 is worth a listen if not today then soon.

Alright, good stuff.
Happy Announcement day.
I was looking forward to hearing what's next and hot dog it's from the early '70s :)
Get the subscription people!

Sure, always welcome. Let us know which show for tomorrow.

#38, back to 73. Sounds great. Another banner year shaping up for 2021. I had the year, but not the month or the show. Kezar will have to wait.

And now we can move on to the 2021 box set. So many possibilities.....

Stay well folks.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qYmsTfhDMZc What a show, Garcia's first show back was a very special night. He looked like he was having so much fun . When he sang " I will survive" during Touch of Grey, I thought the roof of the Oakland Coliseum would blow right off, very emotional moment. During Candyman, when he sang " hand me my old guitar", the place just explodes. A very special night for sure, I'm glad I was there. A birthday I'll never forget.

I remember the word coming back from those shows, the Candyman was back in town.

I bet being there that night was a highlight.

Happy Birthday!

Not sure where to post this .... but I mistakenly ordered two subscriptions this year, and rather than put them on eBay and make a profit, my Holiday cheer good Karma mood is causing me to list the pair, still sealed ( 2122 and 6407/22000 respectively) at cost plus shipping. So depending where you are figure about 65-70 bucks for the pair. PM me your interest. My only request (which will be honor system only of course) is that you don't flip them on eBay.
Mark. PM me if interested and I can likely still get to you to get under the tree

I caught the 87 Greeks (a personal high), the tapes are not noteworthy but the shows were great. I had wonderful tapes of the 88 Greeks I scored pretty much after the dust settled. Once Dicks Picks became thing in I think '93, I still had this legacy killer Alpine system in my truck with no back seat and the acoustics were pretty damned good.. it rocked and it was a cassette only vehicle so I still listened to cassettes for a while. ..really until I discovered Archive.org at about the same time as my alpine system got stolen for the very last time and I bought a new truck with a CD player. So that's my history with this run. I had every set on cassette and have fond memories but no recent listens.

Plus it's not an anniversary show so there's that. The middle night was my least favorite, but much loved nonetheless. The Memphis Blues is on Postcards of the Hanging and I have this suspicion it might have been recorded multi-track.

anyway.. back to regularly scheduled drums/space and anniversary shows. I would like to see this whole run get released, each of the three shows is noteworthy in my humble opinion.

Billy the kid-Happy birthday for yesterday-I seem to have missed that one. You are three months ahead of me.

December always puts me in mind of 1971-some great shows in that month. Some released, some unreleased some in between. I am half way through 12/5-great lone outing for "I Washed My Hands" . Quite topical, now I come to think of it.

I listened to 12/15/72 Long Beach last night. Awesome. Upon further research I read that the 12/11/72 Winterland show took place at the same time and date as the first of three EVAs (moon walks) of Apollo 17 astronauts that started at 4:54 p.m. P.S.T. and lasted 7 hours, 53 minutes and 11 seconds. So the complete Winterland show happened while the two last humans to walk on the moon did their work. Maybe that’s why they played Dark Star that night. Dark Star was also played on 12/15/72 in Long Beach while Apollo 17 was returning from the moon.
Possible recommendation for December 23, 12/23/70 Winterland.
If I had a 50 for all the 50th anniversaries I’ve been observing in recent years I’d have shoe box full of Ben Franklin’s.
Saturn and Jupiter are looking amazing. Last evening they lined up with the new crescent moon.

Morning

Alright, so after listening to most of 9/7 yesterday and based on what we've been told by DL, here's my thoughts on what we're getting and why.
Lay it on me...

Bird Song & Playing In The Band as Bonus Material on DaP V38 per DL

Bonus Disc - Almost 80 minutes - (Might look like this)
Here Comes Sunshine
Let It Grow >
Stella
Truckin' >
Drums >
The Other One Jam >
Eyes >
Sugar Magnolia

That's close to 77 minutes of good stuff.
There's a reel flip in Truckin', about a 2 plus minute patch, they'll probably use the Jerry Moore Audience for. It appears to be on Master Reel. Taper's Section has it as well as circulating SBD.

My assumption on why this show doesn't get the full meal deal treatment is possibly due to the number of clipped beginnings to songs on the master reel. El Paso, LLR, Loser all have clipped beginnings.
So yeah, that's what I think will happen with that.

We're getting the Meat & Potatoes here folks! And it's the first show featuring Jerry playing Wolf.

Far Out, I'm stoked.

If we get the HCS from 9/7 the release with the Bonus will contain 6 of the 7 songs released on WOTF on the first two shows after the albums completion.

Good stuff for sure. Thanks DL & Team!

Now.. what's happening at 9am PST today with Dave & Gary?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmMjY6tXaEo&feature=youtu.be

Could it be more WOTF news? Exciting :)

....picked Rich Stadium 6.6.92 randomly. I've never heard it. Just gotta poke around.
https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1992/06/06
Touch Of Grey ->
Greatest Story Ever Told
Althea
All Over Now
Friend Of The Devil
Masterpiece
Ramble On Rose
Let It Grow
-
Aiko Aiko ->
Estimated Prophet
Same Thing ->
He's Gone ->
Drumz ->
Space ->
The Other One ->
The Wheel ->
Throwing Stones ->
One More Sat Night
-
Baba O'Reilly->
Tomorrow Never Knows

We're on the same wavelength again... I was just checking out 12/17/92, man that show is good!

I heard an interesting interview with Vince from 6/19/92 yesterday and it made me want to check out summer '92.

Nice!

I have been in and out around these parts since school started up. This virtual teaching stuff is WAY more work than I thought it would be, and much more work than regular teaching. What might take me 20 minutes to prepare for the classroom is taking me an hour, what usually would take me an hour can take me up to three - and let's not even get into trying to tackle grading student essays...

Anyway, I am not sure if this is ground that has been covered, but I would like to suggest 12/16/78 Nashville for today. I am usually not a big fan of 78, but I will keep on trying, as I know there are some killer shows (or parts of shows) to be had. Anyway, this one was suggested to me, so I thought I'd give it whirl! Opens with a nice long Sugaree that sounds damn good to these ears. Here is a link to a Miller AUD that sounds pretty nice. I believe this is the best sounding copy available, and after a brief touch of warble in the very beginning, it really does settle down into a nice mix:

https://archive.org/details/gd1978-12-16.sonyecm250-no-dolby.walker-sco…

Also, I feel like I am in the minority here, but I really liked that Ripple video. I thought the animation was beautiful, and liked all the little Easter eggs hidden throughout.

Happy Friday, DeadLand!

Peace

Good to hear from you O and thanks for all your hard work with the kids! I mean it, I'm so impressed with teachers during this trying year and all the extra time and effort they have had to put in. So raising a glass to you my friend! (coffee cup, but same sentiment).

I'll check out the 12/17/78 show again, it's got a From The Heart Of Me ;)
It looks like there's a SBD with Aud patches as well as an Audience recording by the one and only Joani Walker (thanks Joani for all the tapes!!!!). And there's a post radio show interview with Joani & ACE Bob Weir.

But first.. I've got a date with a Dark Star from 12/18/73. Still on the road with Bob T in the 1973 time machine. 2 more shows to go and they could be legendary in the future!

Good Stuff.

PS EDIT - VGUY what'd you think of 6/6/92? Dug the first set. Best Take a Step Back in the 1990s? Also enjoyed weird Spanish Jam & TOO blender bender. I kinda fell asleep during set 2 (not knocking it, i just took a nap) so I might have to listen to it again, but yeah. Interesting time Summer '92. I'd just heard an interview with David Lemieux talking about the stage chemistry he witnessed on Spring '92 tour and that he wasn't surprised when Bruce split. Add the Vince interview from 6/19/92 and it gives an interesting view into the band at this stage of the game. Fascinating. BTW Dark Star out of Space on 6/8/92 is worth visiting!

Thanks for the kind words!

Just for clarification, I am listening to 12/16/78 Nashville - 12/17 is Fox Theater - though they both have "From the Heart of Me." The Bobby interview is at the end of the Fox theater show too. This Nashville show is nice! It seems I prefer fall/winter 78 to winter/spring 78...

After this, I might just join you and Bob for a little palaver in Tampa 73 :)

Good to hear from you Otis. Yes, this year has been a huge challenge for sure. My 11 year old daughter in middle school is having the virtual learning blues. Not too much fun looking at your Chromebook all day in Google Meets. Just hoping to survive this crap and see better days on the other side.

Anyway, thanks for the 78 pick. I will check it out. Last weekend I pulled out From Egypt with Love. There is some really good music on that release from October 78 at Winterland. And the bonus disc with If I had the world to give, is really good, love this version.
