    September 3 - September 9, 2007
We have a tremendous variety of music for you this week, spanning almost 20 years of the Grateful Dead’s recorded history, and we hope you’ll find this week’s journey as enjoyable as we did while preparing it for you.

As we mentioned last week, we have a bit more music from the Family Dog in San Francisco, specifically the encore from 9/6/69, a nice Pigpen-led Midnight Hour, with plenty of good jamming in the background.

Our next chronological stop on this week’s trip is 9/9/72 at the Palladium in Hollywood (venue of the performance of one of the best-ever versions of Hard To Handle, in 1971). From this show in 1972, we have the second set jam of He’s Gone>Truckin’>The Other One, which features a reel flip that is just a fact of life in these 7” reel-to-reel tapes, which run at 7.5 ips, meaning the tape is changed every 47 or so minutes. It’s always fortunate when the cuts are located in acceptable places, like this, rather than the brutal cuts that often destroy the listening experience. This one really isn’t too bad.

At this point we jump forward a year to 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum, with a song that mightn’t be what people think of first when they think of 1973: Looks Like Rain. This is a really great rendition, and just sounds so darn good, we thought you’d enjoy it. And, for a dose of quintessential 1973 music, we have the first set closing song from the same show: Playing In The Band. I really can’t get enough of these 1973 Playing In The Bands, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Going forward to 1985, to 9/3/85 in Kansas City, we have the pre-Drums sequence featuring That’s It For The Other One>Eyes of the World>I Don’t Need Love. The “Cryptical” part of the sequence in 1985 never quite matched the energy or perfection of the 1969 versions, but the “Other One” portion of the song is very good, as is the Eyes and the rare Don’t Need Love. This is drawn from the Beta PCM digital masters.

Lastly this week, we have a couple of songs from London on 4/7/72, specifically Pigpen’s Chinatown Shuffle and a powerhouse Me and My Uncle.

As sometimes happens, we have no idea what we’ll have for you next week, but looking at what we have to select from, it’s bound be to be a nice selection of some excellent music. Let us know what you think by writing with questions, comments, suggestions or requests.

    Attn: Rhino CEO
Yes, just so you know, thanks for sharing...for me, it's like getting a prize in the cereal box. Since 1984 I've purchased over 100 various Rhino products at retail outlets, including record lps on vinyl such as the Nuggets series, Best of - The Standells, Easybeats, Chocolate Watchband, etc. Video tapes - the entire Shindig! series, etc. and on cd, the Nuggets I and II box sets plus many of the Rhino vinyl records all over again in the new format... It's good public relations when a company such as General Mills or Procter & Gamble gives it's customers a little premium in return for their continued support and loyalty to the name brand products. Popcorn, peanuts, candy and a prize... that's what you get with Cracker-Jacks... altho, the prizes aren't what they used to be, now made of paper instead of more durable (and no doubt dangerous) bakelite or pewter. I think in the short run today's corporations are making as much profit as they can before the bottom line sinks even further away... It must be hard sleeping regular hours, worrying as computer savvy consumers continue to collect whatever free samples or giveaways that somehow you could have made them pay for. The solution, you say, is let them sample it but in less valuable format, a bit like letting it be played on the radio, so we'll have to hook up all kinds of wires and recording decks or at least additional software in order to play sample selections at our leisure, and perhaps be enticed to purchase the whole set... Just as earlier generations enjoyed making home tapes so they could feel they were a part of the creative process, though the truth is, we've always been little more than consumers, buying back what we made trendy and popular to begin with. Green Stamps, box tops, transistors, vcrs... I remember sunny Jim, when we could just tape whatever movies and tv shows we wanted - that was so much fun when it first became possible in the home, circa 1982. People taped hours on end of MTV which was also new at the time. Before that, if we wanted to see a movie any old time, and pretend we had our very own theatre - we'd get those little 8mm reels and tiny little projectors - or we'dmake low-fi cassette tapes off the radio, etc. The only thing that's really changed, and apparently this is what has you congloerates nervous - is that the home consumer can make copies of a much better quality now. Yeah, but it's still a home-made amateur assembly, and still can't compete with the real thing. No used record store would give a dime for a CD-R, no matter how nice the scan is. Stop worrying about the few books that get borrowed from the library. Even John D. Rockerfeller took his PR man's advice - when the public increasingly expressed anger resenting his colossal greed Rocky bit the bullet and gave away dimes to children of all ages in public. While no great loss to his fortune, coughing up thousands of dimes was a business expense that nevertheless made the old man sweat bullets... and it actually worked wonders to stem the tide of ill will. Would that Rhino learn from their forebear and loosen up on the thousands upon thousands of Grateful Dead recordings instead of clutching at straws. The motivations to withhold at this late date are transparent. The not-so-dumb kids of today can see right through the emperor's new clothes. Brother, can you spare a dime? all the endless runes of the past

    Hard to Handle referenced above
http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-08-06.aud.bertrando.yerys.129.sbeok… David refers to the Hard to Handle from the Palladium. This is one of my all time favorites. The link above is to the Rob Bertrando audience recording of this show. It is superb, best audience I have ever heard. The Hard to Handle is a mind blower. BTW, the sbd of this song is on the fantastic Fallout From the Phil Zone. If you don't have that one, I highly recommend it.

    Back off of David, please
Phil mentions in his book that the GD fans are passionate about their feelings and can, therefore, be very harsh in their criticism. What is happening here is the perfect example. So, my suggestion to everyone involved is, don't take it personal. I agree with Charlie Miller that David is a good guy. Before the new website was initiated, I sent David numerous emails with comments and questions. He always answered them personally and in a timely fashion. I am truly grateful to him for all the great music he provides, even though I am also disappointed it cannot be downloaded anymore. As I stated last week, the GD's generosity has always encouraged me to buy more, not less. I would suggest that as David and company take a step back, evaluate the situation, and get back to us, the most important thing is communication. It seems to me that Rhino are doing a good job getting out music, and the quality, which is their real forte, is superb. The 76 NYE show and Vault 3 both came out over the last year. If this is not quick enough for some fans, maybe Rhino could explain why it is not possible to expedite the process. Also, do the downloadable shows not sell well enough due to the lack of exposure? If not, why not do more? Phil also mentions in his book that allowing tapers was the best thing the dead ever did. So why has the philosphy changed? I think providing answers to these and other questions posted on this site would help tremendously.

Nothing will keep deadheads from trading Dead shows, whether by bittirrent, downloads or snailmail; legally or not, Rhino can't stop us. They can, however, keep us from buying official releases and keep us from repecting the rules of trading officially released material. Respect is a two way street and you need our money more than we need another compilation release.

Although not the end of the world, just another blip in a poorly run business, I too am saddened by no explanation for last week's non-explanation. Make it available one way or the other! Most of us are happy to pay to get these nuggets, but not to have them free for dl for months on end and then yanked from us with a poor excuse.

Thanks for all this great music...it is great to hear some of this stuff from the dark corners that only AUD tapes have revealed thus far... We have heard enough explanation as to why we are not being given mp3's...deal with it, folks...if you are the least bit computer savy, you will figure out how to capture this for your ipods and stereos...if you don't know how, then maybe that gives you something to figure out... remember when we actually had to sit down and put the tape in and play it while the other deck recorded it? NOt much different now, expect that we are being given treats every week...and just a different medium... Hope that doesn't spoil it for everyone, but these complaints are unbearable... Thanks for all the great music, David... ****************************** "Those who refuse military service are the pioneers of a warless world." --Albert Einstein

I think you ARE ALL missing the point. The real BIG ISSUE we all need to be mourning about is this weeks lack of ED'S CAT'S downloads. I mean last week they were there for all of us to download, then they were yanked with a lame explaination that " Someone else could do it." Well, is that what the Cats wanted, or was it a managment decsion? Are they OK? Some of us are not computer savey enough to make this happen. We come to this site expecting Cat downloads and it is not even allowed to be streamed. We have been cut off by management without any consideration for the fans. A SHOW WAS CANCELLED HERE FOLKS and all you're doing is bitching about Dead Mp3's and streaming!!!!! Time for a reality check here peeps. Some of us need the HAIRBALL!!!!!! We are willing to pay for the HAIRBALL. What would the essential Lily Allen say when her most advocate cover band " Just goes away" Crap man, these are SERIOUS ISSUES. WE WANT ANSEWERS!!!!! VIVA THE HAIRBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to listen yet, but after that incident last week, where someone bothered to download an MP3 and why? TRADING SHOWS builds a community- a reel good sense of Family. There is the Archive as well- it is a regular ole Vault of sounds and information.

I am glad that you guys pulled the MP3's. It was getting a bit ridiculous. I, like so many others (because of the format), thought that these were gimmes. All the complainers need to go back and look at the file that they have been dumping these things in. There are 384 items that take up 8.38 GB and would take 4.2 days to listen to. Most of us mere mortals cannot listen to them more than once anyway, so why keep them around taking up valuable disk space. I frankly prefer the remastered official releases from the vault for repeat listens and look forward to collecting all 60 or so of them that have been released to date. I hope you folks at dead.net will keep up the good work of documenting this remarkable history. I cannot think of another band that has a one-stop historical documentation like the one presented here. I have enjoyed it. Thanks. My request: Can you arrange it so that we can listen to the entire week's selection on the taper's section with one click? It would make things more convenient.

Let's all keep in mind that this is a free website. David does this out of love for the music (I assume) and we are calling him a jerk because he doesn't respond to our rants? I would guess that the format/downloadability is probably out of David's hands. Why should we be entitled to free downloads anyway? My hat is off to you David. Thanks! Get Fried Man

David's always been nice to me, perhaps he did get caught when the bank vault door slammed...He answered my emails pronto, and filled my requests here as best he could. Rhino on the other hand, owes my pal Cyril Jordan a handful of dimes, aaah... Sundazed is a potential competitor with higher standards. Check their catalog, very nice reissues, including the Bob Dylan classic albums on 180 gram vinyl in both stereo and mono - Sundazed is a class act sunny jim.

Come on guys. I really can't believe all of these negative comments. This is SO NOT what the Dead and everything that goes along with the Dead is about. Each and everyone of us should be more than grateful to have the music offered to us each and every Monday - free!. Who cares about the damn format. GET OVER IT! Just enjoy the music! All of you who have made negative comments owe David a big apology - really. Hell, I remember going to shows and writing the set list down on a piece of paper and then hearing bootleg tapes a month later. Now, all of that is availible hours after a show! So think about what I am saying and save your whining for someone else. Don't bother posting comments saying your pissed off, etc. Save it! Rock on David!!!!!

Some "heads" apparently need to understand that David Lemieux is acting based on directives coming down from some faceless corporate entity at this point. He has had to make adjustments to the new way, for better or worse, just as we all have. To categorically deny your love of Grateful Dead, due to simple mis-management by those who obviously don't know what they are doing, is a huge mistake. Love of true art should never depend on who is making what decision behind the scenes. It is what it is. Cut David some slack, he's been doing great work for us for years. By the way I'm certain he's not too "blond" to see anything~ he has dark hair

I'm as pissed off as anyone about the new streaming format versus the downloadable mp3s. But I don't blame David. He's just doing his job. He’s in a tough position (between the heads and the executives at Rhino). There’s understandably some anger over this change, but lets not blow is out of proportion (much less direct it at the wrong individual). Rhino has obviously put the breaks on the mp3s. I was sceptical when it was announced that Rhino was taking over the vault, and now I'm concerned. However, at least the heads have David as their voice regarding future releases. Hang in there David, we still love ya. We're just disappointed at the situation.

I'm streaming the Playin' from 9/7/73 right now, works fine. Pretty damn hot, too...except for Donna. :) This sure as hell ain't the taping community I hooked up with in 1982. I remember getting killer audiences of Augusta 10/12/84 six weeks after the show; we were amazed at how FAST that was. The internet has spoiled the taping community. We think we're entitled to nothing but the finest soundboards, anytime we want them, period. Guess what? We still do have them. You can stream any show from archive.org that you want, and you can still download the audience recordings. Do your homework and learn what the OLD-SCHOOL guys like Rob Eaton, Barry Glassberg, Jim Wise and the Oade brothers went through to get some of those audience recordings in the 70's and early 80's...they did some EXCELLENT work, and archive.org has it for FREE download. Alternatively, check out the Mouth Of The Beast series (www.motb.org) for some fine examples of audience recordings, especially 3/9/81. But ultimately, if you have to have those prisitine soundboards in lossless format, do your homework and find how how and where to download them. They're all out there, thanks to extremely dedicated people like Charlie Miller (THANK YOU for all your hard work in this regard, Charlie). Get off of David's ass. He's doing his best to give us tasty nuggets from The Vault, and that's where his responsibility stops. He doesn't set the policy, Rhino does. Christ, talk about killing the messenger....he does what he can to bring us gems and people here want to slit his throat. Thanks for the tunes, David.

I've been enjoying Dead music for well over 30 years now and I just want to say I remember when trading tapes often had sound dropouts, cuts in music, people talking over the music, and various other crap. One from the Vault came out in 1991 I believe and a steady release series began. It was so wonderful to get these complete shows and even the highlight sets were pretty good. Too many folks have been spoiled by these internet downloads. I agree with those who want more shows released, I really miss Dick's Picks every spring summer and winter. But stop bitching about David and what he offers us. I really enjoy this Tapers section and I think we should be glad to hear any of it at all!

I'd first like to say thank you to David for taking the time to pull together all of these tasty nuggets each week. I certainly appreciate it. I tend to listen to the tracks at work (it's my only option now) however with the streaming format i have to keep going to the site and load another song. It would be great to have the option to "play all" of the tracks for the week. As for all of the whiners and complainers bitchin' about not being able to download the mp3s, don't blame the messenger. How much of your time do you spend each week providing a FREE service?

D.Dead Can't really believe comment lines like "I don't care anymore..." and "We were all ignored I guess...." and "Bill Graham and Jerry would be saddened....." Man I listen to this great taper's section every Monday and look forward to it. Can't say there is no such thing as a free lunch. It's free, it's clean and it's good. The remaining members of the band have made it inherently clear they will protect their diddies from downloading. Thems the facts. Deal with it. But the streaming is excellent and few can deny that. I'm certainly pleased with the quality and selection. I bow to thee, Mr. Lemieux. Very, very nicely done!

I have been reading the posts for the past 3 weeks and they are starting to make me physically ill. I too enjoyed the downloads, but c'mon people...get over it. The sense of entitlement makes me so angry. My only complaint as far as the Rhino thing goes is the glacial pace of the official releases....and that, in my opinion is a legitimate gripe. However, I am willing to give them a little more time to get it sorted out...in the meantime, If you really need to download stuff, go to etree. And my only message to Dave is to keep up the great work, and know that it is appreciated. And maybe see if you can light a fire under Rhino's collective butts to get the releases flowing.

It seems that if bands want their fans' continued patronage they best think about giving something back. I have given plenty to the Grateful Dead cause - it doesn't seem too much to ask to have a few free tracks for my iPod. Talk to Wilco.

There's hundreds of shows recorded in a multi-track format and thousands more recorded on 2-track. There's likely a few hundred on video as well. There is no reason for the lack of new releases to come out every few months, regardless of what happens with the tapers section.

I can't get enough of pigpen... And I'm starting to get used to the new listening method (although it's still a bummer). As others said, there should at least be an option to stream all the files together, so that we don't have to come back to the page each time a song ends. It'll make things a lot easier for us listening while doing other things. Cheers.

Especially when Gans comes in with a brilliant comment like this: "Eight gigabytes wasn't enough?" Hey, David (G), what about you? I haven't noticed your saying what you think of the GDH no longer being in MP3 format. You've never been overly upset about people trading your shows. What's your take on all this?

tj crowley when one focuses one what one dosen't have, one loses gratitude of what one does have. since the onset on this allowance (?) to download, i've set up the cd's to create diferent atmosphere's..going back (some of us never left) and listenning to already burned (sorry dave L) disc's, it takes away whatever pain mite be generated by the loss (what can one lose when one never had) of probable tunes. listen to the space>comes a time>sugar mags.5 18 77..great seque from space w/ Phil pounding out the change...unbeleivable comes a time w/ jer hitting really sweet notes..THEN check the 'playinm' from 5 17 74...nice Phil..bobby kick's ass (and his guitar is noticable - he's probable the finest rhythem guitarist applying a piano approach to the guitar)..if you close your eyes (careful if your operating heavy machinery!) you can visualize bobby croutched over the neck of the guitar driving the bus to never ever land...

I just read on the CNN site that the GOGD, thanks to our "friends" at Rhino, are going to make their music available for a new EA video game, Rock Band. If this is the BIG announcement we are supposed to be waiting for, the wait is over. I could not care less about letting kids play games that utilize the studio renditions of, "classic Dead tracks "Truckin'," "Uncle John's Band," "Touch of Grey," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones."" This is just further proof that Rhino is not in tune with the fan base of the GD. I have never known a fellow GD fan who was rabidly requesting that Rhino use the catalog to sell video games. Please, listen to what has been said, give up on the goofy reissues and gimic-types of promotions (Sirius, video games, etc.) and get back to the stuff we fans want....releasing the unknown treasures contained in the vault!!!

Been reading these threads for 3 weeks now, and just had to chime in. Yes, the mp3's were cool and easy to deal with. And of course everyone knows that "Taper's Section" means we are going to copy and share. But you can't always get something for nothing. The Dead have always been MORE than generous with their music and to their fans. Sometimes you gotta make a living. Sometimes you have to make a business deal to get things done in a competent way. Sometimes you gotta play by the rules. It was nice while it lasted, but all is not lost. If you can't listen to the streams then learn how to use your computer. It is not that hard to do. Ask for help. If you want to record the streams then download some free recording software and do it. "Taper's Section" also means technically literate and resourceful. C'mon we're deadheads, we can survive, we don't eat our own, and we shouldn't be pissing and whining and moaning and bumming everyone out when there is a wonderful source of tunes available. Kudos to DL, (Keep up the good work!), for selecting and providing a steady stream of what has brought us all together!!!

Most of us have the ability to trade dead shows - the music is out there and as far as I am aware it is still *legal* to trade. The point is that Rhino/DL had made some steps to bring people back in the loop. Personally, I downloaded a couple of the tracks each week and listened to them on my runs. And it actually led to me purchase the Cow Palace CD: LET ME MAKE THIS KNOWN, I WOULD NEVER HAVE PURCHASED THE COW PALACE CD HAD I NOT BEEN COMING HERE TO DOWNLOAD A TRACK OR TWO EACH WEEK. I have a good number of *legally* collected hours of GD music. I can listen to that until I am dead myself. The Tapers Section to me was one of the only positive developments to come from the GD in 12 years. It is a horrible business decision to discontinue downloads. Rhino was not giving the milk away for free - it is all advertising.

"If you can't listen to the streams then learn how to use your computer. It is not that hard to do. Ask for help." You mean I don't just click on them? I have to do something else as well? Happy Trails

You should be able to just click on the track you want to hear and have a pop-up appear asking which format to use. Select either Windows Media Player or Quicktime (Apple) and the track should play. Apparently some people are having problems listening to the streaming content. If the pop-up doesn't appear or the track does't play correctly then you may need to adjust/or install software. I am using a Firefox Browser on Windows XP with a high speed cable connection. I have a plug-in for Quicktime and can listen to the tracks using either format. I believe someone said that there are forum topics out there for helping with the streams. See here: http://www.dead.net/forum/stream-lacking-paddle rrussell8 - I saw in a previous post that you said that Real Player activated and nothing played. I don't think Real Player is supported for these streams. You may have to check what file association .mov files have on your system and change back to Windows Media Player for .mov Unfortunately for some people at work, their firewalls may block streaming media, and that may be the problem.
