Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? mmmm..... I might have to compare and contrast. It went down in my ever changing mind that Normal was, well it has that Scarlet Fire & Terrapin into drumz.. but Nashville had a crisper sound and better separation between the instruments, plus a really good Peggy-O and Estimated Eyes. Both shows have a good Lovin', but full disclosure the Bobby GL's never did it for me, too formulaic and his rants did not come across as genuine as Pigs. So a little hotter v better sound. But don't consider this an analysis, my listens tend to be more influenced by focus and frankly my mood and receptiveness.

I did both all 73 shows consecutively years ago and '78 through May.. but I am always doing stuff so I don't have the rabbit ears of OB and Rock Thing; their attention to detail is most appreciated and enjoyable to take in. Plus.. I'd gladly pay the price of an IMax theatre experience to listen to a show in casa Oroborous just to take in his personal, home edition Wall of Sound. I forked out big bucks 20 years ago for my system but it pales in comparison.

As for March '73, I walked away big on Philly and Baltimore but Boston Garden did not register and in hindsight it's hot, hot, hot. When I weigh on a show, it's an opinion at a point of time that can be bribed by party favors and mood for the day. A mortal flaw.. first world problems.

So I am to revisit 4/78. I think I need to work a little less and live a little more. I pulled down the new 2/17/73, that's on my list. I'd like to take in some Fall and Winter '73. A compare and contrast of the last two shows of the year perhaps.. Did Dick pick the right show for DiP1? Inquiring ears want to know.

I'd like to contribute more.. but it's been a challenging year full of distractions. Summer is coming, so there's that.

You don't have #7 OB? We need to change that, I think you would really like this show.

I will definitely go back and listen to #37 again. I know I had it up within the last couple of months.

I did listen to #15 from Nashville over the weekend and I don't think Bob was happy with the first set, "That's it, we quit" Good show and the sound quality is as good as #7. Nice Estimated Eyes and Wharf Rat.

Do you have any recommendations from your recent tour of March 73?

I mean, this is a hot period. What a tour this is. More from this tour would be welcomed.

    Slow day on the site.

Plus miscellaneous spins of DaP 45

    Don’t have Dave’s 7, one of 5 I don’t have copies of…
Hmmm, that’s a bold statement DV as DaP 37 blew me away.
Perhaps because I was not expecting it to be and sound as good as it was?
Every show I’ve heard so far from this tour is good, highly recommend 4/11 and 4/16 too!

Agree, like DaP 13 better than DaP 42.

Haven't listened to this show in a couple of years and wow, I think I like it even more now. A+ on sound quality and both sets deliver high energy Dead. Love the NFA, Black Peter, Around and Around and close it out with Werewolves of London. I went back and read the liner notes again and low and behold, they were written by Blair Jackson. Since I have 78 on my brain, I think I will check out Dave's 15 from 4/22 in Nashville. Of the three released from this time period 4/24 seems to be the top dog in my book. The William and Mary show is good, not great. On to Nashville.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

You cats are already on to 1973. I'm still savoring the gentle respite in the oasis of Austin.

Death don't have no mercy, but there's always time for lunch.
Thanks for reminding me of LL. I need to see if I can get reinstated over there.

Grateful Dead Live at The Auditorium, Austin, Tejas on 1970-02-23
Harpur College was another of my heavy, heavy rotation tapes back in the day, along with the 2/18/71 Capitol Theater show I've already mentioned numerous times. Both were massive inspirations. For what seems in hindsight like a fairly significant period of time, if it wasn't one of those, it was Reckoning.

I Know You Rider: Lovin' the energy and grit of this Rider. It's almost angst.

High Time: This is a song! It's a pretty weird song, too, and after attempting it several times, myself, I must say it isn't surprising it wasn't played often. Damn, it's hard to sing. I submitted a completely deconstructed version of this for the February Dead Covers Project a few years back. I made a point of not revisiting to the original before recording, just going off memory and some notes left in an old binder of songs. I'm sure the ever-growing defenders of canon were thinking, "You ain't doin' it right if you ain't readin' it off a teleprompter." It was an "interpretation". Lol.

Dire Wolf: What a lyric. An electric version, no less. Pretty mellow electric set, almost acoustic.

Yellow Dog Joke… ah… well way to go for completely screwing up the joke, Bobby… actually, I'm not sure I've ever heard him make it all the way to the punch line. We should all heed Jerry's advice and "Don't encourage him." Everything was so light and positive in these days. Phil could be a bit surly, as we've already heard in this tape.

Monkey and the Engineer: This was a standard in my old folk-rock duo. My partner played it and I just followed along. I'd have to start from scratch to figure out how to play it again. Such good stories in these tunes.

Little Sadie: Nice. This wasn't on the Harpur College tape or Reckoning. Another dark story. I don't see how they could possibly be breaking strings playing such gentle music.

Me and My Uncle: I don't recall hearing an acoustic version. It's a great song and works in any format. At this point everyone hadn't already heard it a million times. Imagine that!

Black Peter: One of my favourite tunes ever. Doesn't get much darker than a song from the point of view of a death bed. Started doing this one myself occasionally a few years ago, but I always need a cheat sheet for the bridge. Nothing repeats. There are some interesting mnemonic connections between the chords and the words that help. Just have to sit down and do my homework. Ahh… yeah, Pig sittin' in nicely on the organ. This song needs a really delicate hand, but the organ adds a nice little gospel flavour. If only Pig coulda added just a touch more flair to his playing to fill in some lines before Jerry takes his solo. Pig's got the tone.

Seasons of the Heart: Never heard this before. Great pick! Thanks.

Uncle Johns: Have heard this one a few times. 😉

Not Fade Away: I'm gonna call the union! The Galactic Rock'n'Roll Union! That needs to be a band name, or a song, or something! Crazy to think this tune was in their set their entire career. Some good ol' primal energy here. Jerry's "wild" tone. He must've had the amplifier turned WAY up, cause it sounds like he's not in the mix at all. His guitar is just being picked up by a vocal mic, or something. Basically, no drums, either. I can't keep track of which guitars he was playing in the early years. He seemed to play whatever was available after giving up the Starfire. Sounds kind of like a Stratocaster, The Graham Nash Strat, perhaps? Alligator did not come on the scene until later, if I recall correctly. This tone has even more of a stereotypical Stratocaster sound than Alligator, which retained very little Fender electronics by the time it gets heard on Europe '72. Anyone? Oh, cool call and response with Pig. TC has already left at this point? I need to get my timelines straight. Bobby diggin' in with some soulfully aggressive singing, rather than simply aggressive.

Mason's Children: I can't recall ever hearing this, either. The name comes up often, but it's not on anything I've listened to regularly. Again, thanks for this pick! As you say, not exactly high-energy stuff, but some very rare pieces here. Always appreciate the chance to learn something new about this fascinating family.

    Hey rockers!!!

Pick Of The Day: Austin, Texas February 23, 1970

I reluctantly discussed this at the end of last year. Here I am again. It appears that I’m stuck in a time warp. The galactic rock and roll union. I have no special talent, I am only passionately curious…..

It appears that the currently circulated recording of this show is the only surviving audio document from the Dead’s four show excursion through Texas in February 1970. It’s tough coming right after the wonderful, brilliant Fillmore West/Fillmore East shows earlier that month, and perhaps it’s not unexpected that the intensity level might come down a bit. That being said, this is still interesting, enjoyable, and worthy…..

The band is in 1970 electric/acoustic/electric mode. The circulating recording appears to be missing part of the first electric set, coming in during Know You Rider. For fans of acoustic Dead, this set is nice---Monkey And The Engineer-Little Sadie-Me And My Uncle-Black Peter-Seasons Of My Heart-Uncle John's Band. The festivities are completed with a jammy NFA and Mason’s Children.

The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind. I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity……

Did Bear travel to Texas, and did he record? Banana boxes, reveal thy mysteries…..

    Rock on,

    Doc

I don't own this one.
At first I thought Bolo was talking about Steppin Out by Joe Jackson.

I am with you GOGD, I am also interested in hearing about the different mix from the box set.

Almost finished with 2/9/73. What a show. Always love to hear first versions of songs, Eyes of the World, fantastic. Love the HCS, Truckin.
Would be a fantastic show to release.

Well I'm on Hurts Me Too on Disc 1 and this is def a fine sounding CD!

I haven't gone back and forth and compared the two mixes in real time.
But since I was curious I poked around.. cause, you just gotta poke around.

And here's some info from Deadessays.blogspot.com -
Let’s not forget that big chunks of this tour previously appeared on the archival releases Hundred Year Hall (released in 1995), Steppin’ Out (a compilation of songs recorded on this tour in England, released in 2002), and Rockin’ the Rhein (released in 2004). Also, the box set The Golden Road (released in 2001) and the later individual re-issue of Europe ’72 contained bonus tracks from the tour. Astute listeners will notice that the mixes on these earlier releases is much more refined in terms of dynamics, equalization, reverb, and other sonic niceties than it is on the 2011 box. Keith Godchaux in particular receives more attention to detail on the older mixes. On the 2011 mixes, there is even a distortion issue with the vocals on every show up to the first Paris show (5/3/72) that then pretty much clears up for the rest of the box. Obviously the mixing budget for Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings did not allow for the “extravagance” of the earlier, higher-fidelity mixes.

So we've got some Astute Listeners here!

Any other details folks got about the mixes and the difference in the source material used I'd love to hear about.

But based on what I'm reading the mixes for the previous releases were more enhanced and higher-fidelity due to the production time and budget that the Dead had to work with, or probably should say Jeffrey had to work with.

While I'd heard this mentioned, I've never fully explored it. So therefore.. I did not know that.

Won't have my copy at hand for a couple days. Thinking back a bit earlier even and just how fantastic Hundred Year Hall was. Its been a long long while since I've listened to that, but if memory serves one of the gifts was how inspired Keith's playing was as part of the whole. While the Steamer Trunk was a holy grail release, I remember thinking what the heck where is Keith a lot of the time, and it turned out that Norman had intentionally mixed him down, at times he seemed barely audible. Not that I don't love listening to shows from the trunk but there is a bit of a sigh as to certain mix choices.
That 17000 y/o conch shell is an amazing story. To be able to hear that sound!! The NPR story from yesterday also had a brief sequence from a repro of bird bone flute that was even older - so pretty.
DeadVikes - grew up in the Chicago area. College in MN. The upper midwest is near and dear in my heart. though I'm way out west now.

Half-assing it on the E72 sound quality.
But look at who manages the Vault.....
No surprise that they wouldn’t give due respect to an epic tour, but still had no qualms about charging people like they had given due respect.

Of course, don’t forget that the band did a little overdubbing.

http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-europe-72-overdubs-guest-pos…

Hey, at least they didn't record over the tapes after they released E72 like they did with the Warfield/Radio City run.

The box was mixed by Norman from the original multi tracks, they used Plagent Processes and Glasser mastered it
I always thought the sound quality was unbelievably good and can't believe how lucky we are that they released it.

Anyway, I have heard the complaints about Keith in the mix before and I think there is actually some text from Norman on this, explaining it.

Anyway, you should check out Norman's explanation of mastering and mixing in the bonus footage from the The Grateful Dead Movie, interesting stuff.

I hope the next box, whatever it is, comes out soon .

Bluecrow, lucky bastard!

Not to change the subject, but thanks to everyone here for reminding us about the fantastic anniversaries we have this month.

Too much working and lurking, not enough time to chip in. Did Maples Pavilion the other day without prompting, and appreciate the reminder about today.

Forensic Doc, I trust that you are going on sabbatical from your job for the month of April? You will be one even busier man then.

And kudos to LedDed for the post of the year on the other thread. I received #24584/25000, sound quality is brutal.

Was at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland for the amazing five night run in February 1986 that included the two nights with the Neville Brothers. The jam session on the night of the 11th with the Nevilles was the most exciting guest jam from the Brent era I had the pleasure to see, and hear and feel. I sing the body electric. Apologies to Walt Whitman.
I’m gonna have to listen to 2/12/86 tonight.
Will have to visit 4/24/72 over the weekend.
Weather forecast for the Southwest, Cold Rain and Snow.

Gotta drive 300 some miles today through it, but boy do we need it. pretty much never say no to moisture out here.

A favorite version is 7/7/78 - my first tape way back when was "by chance" one of the greatest audience recordings I've ever heard. You are THERE(!!) for that first show at Red Rocks - lightning in a bottle. 1st set is my favorite post-hiatus - absolutely smoking. As most here know, Cold Rain starts Set II - https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1978/07/07/cold-rain-snow?source=914…

Have a great day everybody. Onward.

Got some.

VGuy: You might want to start with 2/11/89, not knocking 2/12 (there's a Willie & The Hand Jive after all) but 2/11 is smoking!! (or maybe that was me.. na, na.. it's smoking too.)

BlueCrow: 7/7/78 huh? Might have to dust that off after I visit this Janis Joplin set from 2/12/69.
What a night at the Fillmore East 52 years ago.
The 2nd night of the GOGD opening up for Janis and her new band and their NY debut.
Some cool video snippets float around out there from 2/11/69 when 60 minutes came to interview her, wonder if CBS has all the source footage that was shot that night?
Highly unlikely, but I can't help to think about it..

And, wow Steppin' Out sounds dope!
A great compilation and I'm glad I finally gave that a spin.
Melted Brits must've been everywhere.
Nice pick BOLO, did you get to rock the big speakers?

Good times and great oldies.
Happy Friday.

Downside? I have to replace a couple cracked windows. And the dog has given me the 24 hour stink-eye.

VGuy - Oops I got my wires crossed, I had been talking about 2/11/86 with Strider, so when I saw your post, I was thinking / referring to '86 and typed '89. That all being said, now you make me want to check out Feb '89 shows.
Def check out 2/11/86 when you get some free time. Trippy!

Bolo - Nice! And what's a little stink eye from a dog and the neighbors compared to hours of audio bliss?!?!
Dig that compilation and glad you mentioned it, def worth having in the ol collection.

BobT - Where's the clue?

Alright, snowy day in Oregon. Starting off with some Don't Hang Off the Balcony and My Dog Has No Nose, Crazy Fingers > Supplication > High Time, boy oh boy.
I bet you all can guess the show?

And happy Anniversary 2/13/70, 51 years ago the Dead played one of their greatest shows ever!!
I think I'll have to fire up that Dark Star > TIFTOO at the very least.

What else we listening to?

starting the morning with Steppin Out.

Those Feb '89 Forum shows look awfully interesting. All sorts of goodness those nights but I mean a Set II Monkey and the Engineer??!! along with Dire Wolf?!!

Still need to get the ABB Bears Sonic Journals.

Haha...
I'm a morning person in my older age for sure.

It's like Christmas every morning when you're a GD Freak!

Did the Dark Star > TIFTOO > TOYLL out of respect.

It's a trip, made me think of something.

My first GD mentor, who I barely knew, sure did know what he was doing.

I mighta told this story before, but.. fuck it.
My friend Kevin's older brother flipped me my first 3 bootlegs.
We were in high school & he was home from college and having a rager Keg party.
So we were so stoked to be hanging and partying with all these college age guys and gals.
I remember they seemed so grown up.. and Joe (I think that was his name) had racks of tapes.
They were blasting GOGD, it was awesome.

I got to talking to Joe, and told him I'd just started getting into the Dead and was curious about all the tapes.
He asked "What are you into?"
At the time I was super interested in Psychedelics and finding the best music to trip to.
I'd heard about "Space" so I said, you got anything with a lot of Space?
He looked at me curiously...
You want a lot of "Space", huh?

Anyhow, he flipped me the tapes with the caveat "Never sell them, only share".

2/13/70 = Dark Star one side TIFTOO other side 60 minute tape?
4/29/71
2/09/73

Nice picks Joe!
Still 3 of my favorite shows.

5/31/80: well I didn’t peak, so I didn’t realize that the Miller SB version I picked was only second set. So as I was doing some PW etc I started to think “WTF?, did they play the second set first lol, no wonder Proudfoot said not to peak”
So I didn’t hear the first set but did really enjoy that second set. This is the kinda thing I’m looking for here, these off the path chestnuts that might never listen to unless someone you hang with turns you on.
Like those 86 shows too. Though I think I might of had the 11th? If it wasn’t such a hassle I’d drag the tapes out.
Didn’t get to those, but I should. I’ve had this thing with 86? Can’t really describe it but don’t feel drawn? I guess if I could remember the Hampton/Philly run I’d have a better feeling, but unfortunately I don’t remember much. Like of all the blurred and forgotten memories, that spring run is like a black hole...probably too many veggies, but I can’t even remember what it was I dropped? Can’t remember much about tapes from 86 either, which probably means I wasn’t that into them? Probably binged out all that year on 85 tapes, like TOGA! (I hear ya GOGD!)
Remember a little more about the 5 summer 86 shows I saw which were mostly good with Riverbend leaving a smoking crater, but Akron I don’t recall much, except meh, and just sorta getting Altamonte fear vibe from like smoking tires etc on the way in...I think? LOL (actually have listened to all those and non are as bad as I thought)

FED 89: now these I’ve always been meaning to check out as I recall my cousin (might of been at?) said they were good? I’d love to hear more about this run from anyone who was there...though sounds like VGUY was in similar condition as me at those spring 86 shows ; )

2/9/73: ok, did this one yesterday. Never been that blown away by this one, I mean it’s basically a sound test.
I’m sure part of my lack of sparkle is because of the shitty tape I had and the fact that I wasn’t ready for the more jazzy 72-74 stuff. I know what tapes I had from that era back then were never very good so I think that had something to do with a lot of BS first impression/pre-conceived notions I acquired, idiot!
Yeah I lived for like raging late seventies/early eighties then, but I digress.
So as I’d not heard it in a long time figured it was time. Now, it’s a good 73 show, and I can understand how some folks are really into “first version shows” etc, so there’s the historical element,....I guess I’m trying to say that it’s a good show, but I’d wish there was more big 73 type jams, and I can think of a half dozen other 73s just off the top of my pointy little head that I’d rather see get them”treatment”.
But hey, that’s just me...glad I heard though, Eyes definitely interesting!

Ok, folks, your in for a treat now as Boo is one of my oldest show buddies. We were pretty inseparable for years back in the bad ole daze; band mates, house mates, roadie/tech work together, and all around looking for trouble aka Neil and Jack, or more like the 2 lead characters in the movie the Stoned Age, a must see for anyone growing up in the late seventies/early eighties. Like Dazed and Confused only better!
Yeah, the two of us on here, hee-hee, “look out Cleveland” part of our “act” was me being a dumb ass, and ole Boo letting me know it! LOL Miss ya Buddy! So glad ya made it!
EDIT: oh yeah, and the shroom powder, that was Hershey, remember, I lost my shit in Hershey! Lol.
We’re we together on spring 86? One tour I remember nothing, cept a couple of the breakouts...

Now you’re talkin!
Happy Valentines Day. I almost wrote Ballantine. Anyone remember olde Ballantine XXX Ale.
2/14/86 GD concert was fun, not near as exciting as 2/11,12/86 nights with the Neville Brothers. But I still had an awesome time. I’d say check it if it moves you.
Four days until the 50th anniversary of 2/18/71. I’m searching those those foggy ruins of time with a searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion.
Read the final writing of Kerouac, “After me the deluge”.

You can't take my mind and leave...

I think it's a good day to listen to the Valentines -
https://archive.org/details/valentines1995-02-14.mtx.miller.117207.flac…

Cream Puff War 1995 smokes

Happy Valentine's Day

BobT - I never would've noticed that as a clue! Was it Bolo?!?!
'71 would make sense as a release after all that was 50 years ago.

OB - Check out 7/6/86 Beginning of Set 2 for some under the radar '86. It smokes!
SBD doesn't circulate, but DL put that portion on Taper's Section and brought it to my attention.
(SBD portion had a lot of drop outs that I messed around with and patched)
It doesn't look like much on paper, but its' real good.

We do not know where the rose comes from.
Rose fossils 32,000,000 years old have been found in Colorado and Oregon.
- Annotated Lyrics by David Dodd

And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended, their minds remained unbended.
- Jerry Garcia

Jerry's second stab at song writing is pretty damn good if you ask me. But, I liked his first stab too.

1968 at the Carousel must've been a hoot.
Burn down the Fillmore, gas the Avalon.
We respectfully dedicate this set to the memory of Neal Cassady

BTW the Annotated Lyrics by David Dodd is next level GD scholar stuff.
I'm impressed with all these smart Dead Heads < One word or Two?

Good Times.

.....Mrs. Vguy gifted it to me one Christmas past. Read it to her in bed a few times. Gave her AND I a new appreciation of the words.
Grate stuff.
Now. Onto my annual listening of 2.14.68. Cuddling up in a comfortable blanket of some Primal Dead.

thank you for the r3ference to 7 6 86

Very nice. I listened today via archive on phone while refiling and selecting shows.
StoC thru Stella

86 is an oddball year. There are plenty of gems. Since it was only a partial year due to Garcia illness, maybe it gets unfairly shunned.

Proudfoot - Oh Yeah, You Betcha! (Think Fargo accent)
Glad you checked that out and dug it.
That 7/6 really surprised me, DL put it on the Taper's Section and I was way stoked on it.
There's some stuff in them thar hills, a fun year to mine. There's some fools gold too!!

VGuy - Ahhh, that's awesome.
I really enjoy pulling that book out and exploring it when the thought strikes me.
It's not my type of read it cover to cover style book, but when I do pick it up and go there, I'm always glad I did.
And it's so well done.
Way to go David Dodd, impressive work!

This '68 Carousel is too much!
That Alligator > Caution...
I grew up wondering what show that was from, it sounds like an epic good time.
Nice send off for Cowboy Neal.

GOGD; thanks fir the 7/6/86 reference. I’m not doing Dead today but it’s on my list!
86 needs some intrepid traveling for sure...I know I liked 86 in 86 lol, but through the years it’s fallen through the cracks. Not remembering spring tour doesn’t help. I know I finally gave those shows a superficial listen on a job sight a couple years ago, but I really need to give them a better look. Still haven’t gotten to the Boxilla show either.

2/14/68: RT 2.2, one of my most sought shows I don’t have yet. Waiting for Real Gone to hurry up and redo it. They were moving along pretty well at first, probably 4 a year like Dave’s. Then, a couple years ago, they slowed way down...maybe they had to slow down because rhino thought they were competing with DaPs?
Anyway, been digging the RT 2.4 show from 93 much more then I would have thought. Hopefully sooner than later 2.3, from 74 will be out, since this is another highly anticipated one, hell all of volume 2 is!
So I’ve purposely not listened to 2/14/68 YET, so I’m hopeful they’ll put that out ASAP this year...until then think that ketchup song...”antici-pa-a-tion, is making me wait”

BALLANTINE ALE: ah that brings back some memories...don’t recall my impressions about drinking it, probably cause back then it was most once’s for the dollar..but since my initial reaction is not recoil, perhaps it wasn’t too bad?
But I do fondly recall my pops often giving me 2 dollars to ride my bike down the street to the convenience store so I could get him a sixer of either Gobel or Ballentine, often on sale for 99c a sixer, in the back of the store in a giant pyramid with big sorta starburst price sign, and a pack of smokes (25 or 30c?) which left me a nice little bounty to buy baseball cards etc for the trouble. I’d toss the beer and smokes in my basket and rush home so I could find out if I got anything good! Must of been quite the sight!
Hey it was a much different time and the manager/staff knew me and my pops and stuff like that happened back then.

The girls were pretty. That was my first takeaway. I was 16. Sue me.
Didn't revisit the Dead until July '87. Was still in heavy metal mode then. Not an excuse. Just facts.

2/14/68, truly a relic of the psychedelic. Have not listened in three years as I did for its 50th anniversary .
But right now I’m traveling back 35 years ago to 2/14/86. Earlier today I glanced at my bulletin board and there was my ticket from that night! Took that as a sign I better relisten and report back.
As I had been given a backstage pass from Brian Williams who was an assistant to John Cutler I brought an old Japanese poet friend Nanao Sakaki (January 1, 1923 - December 22, 2008) who had been visiting up at Kiskadee outside of Nevada City. I got in early and got a couple seats on the left side close to the stage , of course being the Kaiser, just off the main floor. Right now I’m finishing out the first set. As it had been raining cats and dogs and mountain lions and coyotes the Dead played several songs referencing those elements . What strikes me about this run of Dead shows is how tight they were. Let it Grow was so tight, or like the Sun Ra album title it was “bad and beautiful “. I did go back stage at the end of the first set to grab Bobby Petersen to step out front so he could meet Nanao . I believe I had a signed copy of Nanao’s book Real Play that we gave to Bobby. That was the last time I saw Bobby Petersen who died the following January 1987.
So second set they opened with Keep on Growin the Derek and the Dominos song. Last time played. Listening to it now it sounds alright and better. I remember Nanao commenting on the Kaiser Auditorium being like a giant space ship. Boy howdy. Nanao was a true free spirit who loved spirits and smoking ganga. Now listening to Lost Sailor. I don’t believe I’ve listened to this concert in over 30 years. Oh yeah I recorded every night of this run with my Sony D-5 by patching in with other tapers. I’ve got those tapes still. Some on metal tape and others Maxell 2S. I have no idea how they may sound now. Decomposing further I reckon . Was going to pass on listening to this show but then finding the old ticket changed my mind. Sure don’t know what I’m going for but I’m gonna go for it for sure. Drums and space really impressed Nanao who many times was the life of the party at drum jams in Taos County in the 80s. Of course Bobby Petersen and Laird Grant lived in the Taos area off and on in the 60s and 70s. Laird at New Buffalo and Morning Star and Bobby up on Lama Mountain. I didn’t move to New Mexico until 1982 so was a late comer. You could say early 80s was the tail end of the old hippie days. Depends on who you talk to I suppose. I met Nanao in Zuni December 7th 1980. I had traveled there with a WW2 Navajo veteran (communications Sargent) but I digress.
Terrapin sounds awesome at this time. Calling on the elements. Keeping it real. I get goosebumps hearing this show. My God time flies. Anyone who had the opportunity to see the Grateful Dead live even once (and got it) was quite fortunate. I think about the youngest Deadheads (10-11-12?) at some Dead shows in 95 who really became intrigued who may live to 95-101? What 2080? 2085? Who will be the last living Deadhead who actually saw the real Grateful Dead (1995 cutoff thank you) It will perhaps be something like the last Civil War veteran alive or the last WW 1 veteran alive.
Back to 2/14/86, space sounding expansive. Echos from the stars. ( today from Mars?) Left a smoking crater like my mind was blown away. So here it is Valentines Day 2021. My mind is blown. But I will reiterate from another time, to keep your memory sharp, try not to smoke too much herb and drink too much. Exercise, clean diet ( freedom of choice ) good water. Good friends, love of family, lust for life , rise before dawn, greet the sun, give thanks for another day.
Ah yes , Wharf Rat, old man down by the docks of the city. I got no dime but I got some time to hear his story.
So go out and do some good dear readers. Glad I could share this story.
“I’ll get up and fly away, fly away!”
“The compass always points to Terrapin”

Yuck, yuck, get it...? ; )
Strider, sweet post, nice vibe, nice memories, I’m going to have to look at that run. I feel like a had a couple sets from that run, but who knows...tight ya say? That’s interesting cause though I recall liking most/all the shows from that year my recollection is they could be intense, fiery, weird, but occasionally sloppy. But I’m learning that many of my memories are no longer relative lol.
So I think I need to go there...buy the ticket...

VGUY: girls, girls, girls!
Wow interesting set...I was @ those Spectrum shows, and I remember Hand jive sorta but that’s about it for that one....dooooaaahhh, stupid memory! Kinda bums me out I don’t recall such a fun set, or maybe I’m just fortunate I’ve seen so much over the years that it all rolls into one....am I the Victim or the crime?

EDIT: trying to remember now what year/show (86/87?) we saw at the Rectum where they had double booked the venue; WW wrestling followed by the GD....surreal as the meat heads, actually, I remember lots of children with nervous looking Dads LOL, but they had to make their way out through a large, anxious , aaa, “primed” crowd of Dead Heads! Actually very smooth but definitely interesting! Can’t remember what time the band started, but I know we were there well after midnight...Road crew must of loved that shit!

Yes, I am going to put this one on today, thanks for the pick Bob t.

We need a box announcement soon. It has been 12 months since the last one and I am freezing my ass off up here.

Strider - thanks for sharing that story. Just pulled some of Nanao's poetry off the shelf. Traveling with me this week.

2-15-73 this evening hopefully. A fairly early and much loved tape.

Memories of my parents watching Jackie Gleason on a little black and white TV.

And still more Cold Rain and Snow - long day ahead. Be safe everybody.
