Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye! Gentle mistresses and most distinguished gentlemen, we have come upon the release of the DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 37, from the Fifteenth of April in the year Nineteen Seventy-Eight, at ye olde College Of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Cast your waistcoats and your bonnets aside, the Grateful Dead are on steady gallop from the opening high-kick of "Mississippi Half-Step" into a where are we going? where have we been? "Passenger," followed by full-on versions of "Friend Of The Devil," "El Paso," "Brown-Eyed Women," and a double-barreled "Let It Grow>Deal." Catch your breath and straighten out your tricorne because the 2nd set shows no bounds with delightful takes ("Bertha>Good Lovin'," "One More Saturday Night") and introspection ("Candyman," "Playing In The Band"). Then - great fifes and drums - it's 15 minutes of "Rhythm Devils," with band and crew gathered round to amplify the merriment before delivering a rare incantation of "Not Fade Away>Morning Dew" that sets the soul alight. Pure jollification!

    The town crier's addendum:

Three bags full! Lest you feel 4/15/78 beginneth and endeth too quickly, we've selected highlights from Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, PA, 4/18/78 to satisfy your fancy.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 37: WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA 4/15/78 was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman. It is guaranteed to sell out - often within hours.

    Dave, I love you man

LOL, I can’t believe how much I’ve become attached to the seaside chats! Almost as much as some of the releases lol.
I could totally see just sitting around a bar with Dave and a couple other Dead nutz, hockey game on in the background, arguing about the Dead....maybe I’ve just been cooped up too long lol.
The man sure can sell that’s for sure! He takes some of these shows that I’m sorta nonplussed about and gets me psyched. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for each and every release, but we all have hopes for “those” shows (thinking of you HF lol), so some releases provide different levels of let’s say, individual enthusiasm. Dave makes em all special!
Good job eh! PLEASE, keep em coming!
And yes, thanks to all the Dead/rhino crew for all ya do, especially Marye.
Now if only we could choose our shipping method, ahem...

Interesting about clarifying that partially released stuff is from shows that won’t get full treatment/release. Makes sense to me, and it’s good to know what’s what etc. Wonder about “there’s no master list”...I think they they might not have a “set list” made up, but there’s probably a master “song list” that their choosing from of what he said; good shows that we have good tapes of”
You’d think there’d be some discussion or ruff drafts of certain things I.e., June 76, or Fillmore 69, or E72...
Let’s face it though, unfortunately there will be limits as to what/when shows will come out.

SHIPPING NOTICES; many of you have inquired about lack of notices etc. personally I’ve had releases where I didn’t get one at all, or got one about the time it arrived, or even after. Received one this time and if there’s no snafus with the PO/shipping labels etc mine should be here early next week. 🤞
But hey, As long as they show up.....mayor Jim and some others still haven’t received 36, and unfortunately i think there’s some folks still trying to hunt down others...
I guess every silver linings got a touch of gray...

FUTURE: was a little bummed he didn’t at least tease us with “future” info. Like will we get an WOTF anniversary release as HF thinks, and of course the million dollar question; what’s in the box? I think it’s fun for all of us to have some tid bit of information to speculate about, (GIVE IT UP DAVE), like the recent 80s rumors...Unfortunately I don’t think we’re getting a WOTF 50th this year. My interpretation of the accelerated release schedule is more about the last few since if they went the full 50 years half of us could be dead. But I hope I’m wrong! ; )

    Okay, please Mr postman!

EDIT: Crow, you are one funny mofo, thanks!

My shipping notice came a couple days ago. I have subscribed every year since they first started them and am glad that Dave and company have been mixing it up (except nothing from 90s yet).

I actually just started listening to Dave's Picks 36 having waited since getting it months ago and the crowd energy and virtually perfectly crafted performances with Jerry's recovery and return are perfect for that release. My first post-coma shows were Alpine later that year in summer and they were epic. My timing of coming into the Dead and age demographic are pretty much the same as Dave's. My first show was in 84, then send one and third in 86. Alpine 87 was my third outing. By 89 I was finally hitting multiple tours and venue stops. It was a pretty exviting time to be a fan and witness their growth in real time from Jerry's recovery to the MIDI experiments of 89 and beyond.

A short few years later it was gone in a flash, but I sure enjoyed the ride while it was still cruising.....and still am.

I think I finally get where Dave's choices help to bring a rounded out experience to any ears that want to hear history.

it was pretty cacophonic. but i got to play.

    Cut Drums and Full Releases...

Seems like the overwhelming majority of the Drums segment from 4/18/78 has been cut, but I cant' say I'm complaining. On another note, it's interesting to note that Dave specifically points out in the Seaside Chat that partial releases, such as 4/18/78, will most likely never see the light of day as full releases. For example, while only parts of the second set from 4/19/84 were included in DaP 35, we will most certainly never see the show in its entirety. Just something to mull over. It only makes me disappointed because parts of 9/18/90 were released as a bonus disc during Road Trips, so there may never be a full release of one of *arguably* the most beautiful and excellent shows of the 90s'. Anyways, my DaP 37 is in San Leandro so hoping it crosses the Bay any day now :))))

That Arthur Lee and Shack gig was in 1992. I lived in Liverpool 1984 to 2008. Saw Shack several times and Mick Head with Red Elastic band. Great songwriter heavily influenced by Arthur Lee and Burt Bacharach. Happy to recommend stuff. We played Newby Street off Artorius Revisited at Mrs Doc and my wedding!!

I used to live there and it's not all that great of a place. That red dirt gets in your clothes and just won't wash out!

Had a cool hotel there, though.

Clearly we are getting an FM Broadcast Multi-Track box this year. All the FM broadcasts they did in 1971, recorded in glorious multi-track.

Thanks for giving us some easy clues this time Bolo.

That red dirt gets in your clothes and just won't wash out! - I washed my hands, and they wouldn't come clean. Washed My Hands played once on 12/5/71.

Great first set

Second set has a China Rider for the ages
Plus great song selection

I did not know this: Bobby and Mickey and a couple others got arrested this night.

Apparently San Diego was not on their itinerary for years after

Yes, Road Trips 1.4 is gorgeous, I just bought a copy, still in the first set. Looking forward to Hamza El Din in the second set. Bought as a download from qobuz (dot) com - great thing is they have the Road Trips series individually, and even better, the files are HDCD encoded, so if you have the equipment, it is maximum audio for a CD, just great. Only bummer, no bonus CD included.

Believe that I saw Hamza El Din with the Dead in shows either/and New Haven, Hartford, Providence. Hopefully one of these will show up one of these years.

Thanks for the tip, Deadvike, and the info, JimInMD. Z.

Capitol Theater, Port Chester, New York

Set 1: Truckin'-Loser-Cumberland Blues-It Hurts Me Too-Bertha-Playin' In The Band-Dark Hollow-Smokestack Lightning-China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider

Set 2: Greatest Story Ever Told-Johnny B. Goode-Bird Song-Easy Wind-Deal-Cryptical Envelopment>drums>The Other One>Wharf Rat-Good Lovin'-Casey Jones

New era, back to the original quintet. To be honest, when this was first released I was simultaneously happy and disappointed, I would have preferred a different Port Chester. But after careful, open-minded listening I was won over, and despite what some quirky bass player might think, it is a solid show.

Dark Hollow, a Smokestack, the sweet China/Rider to end the first set (I love it in that position, which only occurred once in 1971), one of the last versions of Easy Wind, a solid Other One, and a jammy, rappin’ Good Lovin’. What’s not to like about all that?

Give it a listen, and enjoy!!!

Rock on,

Trying not to be too cynical, but yeah, here comes another eye-roller....

After not receiving DaP36 (3 months and counting) and the well documented shipping SNAFU's and pathetic responsiveness many of us have experienced.... Now I receive an e-mail after every time I check into this DaP37 board saying: "That Grateful Dead item is Going fast!" with a photo of the DaP37, prompting me to order it. DaP37 has been sold out for almost 3 weeks! Hello? Is there anybody out there?

Interestingly, I too have been receiving similar notifications for #37...."This item is going fast!"....so fast, indeed, it's been sold out for WEEKS!

Seems monkeys are pulling some levers back there; nay, forgot to pull a few. This monkey business transcends infrastructure we can see....and makes an offer for introspection on that which we cannot see. What else is in the lurch back there???

Deep Breath.

It's Friday.

Scheming of new ways to get your money, while not actually delivering product.

Missing DaP 36’s?
No, they just rerouted a bunch to eBay resellers, and then made up some sob story about having to manufacture some unnumbered copies.

Remember several years ago when they ‘magically’ found a pallet of a sold out Box Set sitting in the back corner of the warehouse?

Eye brows raised......

Yep, been getting the same note from Dead.net re: Dave's 37. Even if i didn't already buy it, shouldn't those notifications stop since it's sold out? Definitely on auto pilot over there....

of investigating the GD shipping snafus, apparently

If there is a bright side to not getting 36 yet, it is that better a couple 87 shows, and not 6 10 73, 11 19 72, etc.

Still, not getting it after 3 months....boooo!!!

So, back in the day, like when the New Barbarians were touring (look it up!), I had a tiny cottage back from the street on the alley in NE Denver. The block-long greenhouse across the street (now stupid condos) played classical music for the plants. I had a roommate we nicknamed "The Bronto," because we figured his brain was the size of a pea -- a crude notion then afflicting a specific dinosaur species. He kept two piranha in a large tank, they were named J. Edgar Hoover and Alferd E. Packer (a famous Colorado cannibal, who is buried near my current home). Our idea of a good time was smoking hash and tossing small, live eels into the tank to watch the tropical carnivores furiously at work. I was an enthusiastic participant, may I be forgiven... One idea the Bronto had was for me to vacate the small basement, flood it, and raise caimans for sale. For some reason, that idea never made it off the drawing board... However, one night I returned home with my girlfriend and we sat on the couch to relax, only to notice a new terrarium next to it with a piece of tinfoil placed lightly over the top. Inside was a light bulb for heat and ... a very large tarantula that suddenly seemed interested in our presence. Perhaps needless to say, my girlfriend bolted for the front door and announced no more hoo-hah for me until that spider was gone. When he heard of the dire punishment I suffered, to his credit he found Tarantula a new home. At a GD show at Red Rocks, the Bronto went in on crutches he didn't need, in order to use the tubes for firing bottle rockets into the air during the second set. Getting a good picture here? This is unadorned fact, like all my stories, unfortunately.

So, to my actual story, one night the Bronto is slouched on the couch with a jumbo turkey leg in one hand. Being stoned, he relaxed his arm so that the turkey leg kinda dangled in front of him. My beloved hero dog, Genaro -- a collie-huskie mix whose IQ far exceeded that of the Bronto -- has been laser-focused on that turkey leg since it entered the room. Now, seeing it proffered so blatantly, the dog swiftly rises, snatches the giant turkey leg and hot foots into the kitchen, where he throws himself down and begins to tear it apart. The generosity of these humans! Wow! All before the Bronto could even mutter a stunned WTF???

Ah, the priceless memories!

I would loooove for 2 23 71 to get the release treatment. Hot stuff.

2 18
2 19
both hot

2 20 is ok
2 21 is welcome

2 23 pleeeease

2 24 can get left alone

...to here, Us; perhaps this will get some traction on the ongoing issues (as well as exposure to the fun rabbit holes).

This below, from today's GD Bulletin:

'Meanwhile, as usually happens, our evolving, freeform discussion has moved over to the Dave’s Picks Volume 37 thread, where the music is the main thing but the sidetracks and rabbit holes are many. Come on down!'

I'm caught in an existential reality loop.

Any chance of getting a new booklet for Dave's Picks volume 37? When it was inserted into the digipak, the cover of the booklet was crumpled.

“Genaro -- a collie-huskie mix whose IQ far exceeded that of the Bronto -- has been laser-focused on that turkey leg since it entered the room”....PRICELESS! Man I don’t know which I enjoy more; good dogs or the Bronto’s of the world?
Great name by the way, everyone had names in our world BITD...

Assuming you mean DaP#37, then subscription copies should have been shipped on or before the release date although that doesn’t mean they will have all arrived since some people are still waiting for #36 . I’m not sure if the a la carte orders have shipped perhaps someone who ordered that way could comment. If you have an order number then you can log in on the Store page and look at the status of your order. Good luck.

EDIT
On another topic, if the powers that be could hurry up and get the boxset released I might save some money as the pound is unnaturally strong against the dollar at the moment. Just asking :-)

My DaP 37 glass arrived minutes ago and I have to say I'm happy that Dead Net didn't screw me over with their shipping, even though I had to wait well over a week for my shipment ID to actually start tracking. The box itself was a bit scuffed up when I got it which is a bit annoying but the glass itself is what you pay for, a nice sturdy glass which I can't complain about. Lookin forward to re-listening to DaP 37 with a cold one in the glass! To everyone who hasn't received their DaP 36, DaP 37 and more, I wish you luck with your order and that hopefully Dead Net will pick up the slack this year

"Genaro" was one of the world's greatest effin' dogs: smart, funky sense of humor, always up for adventure. Passed away prematurely in 1990 after 12 magical years together, from when I was 19 to 30, the age when a young man and a hero dog could rule the world.

I'm still thinking about getting another dog. But after 31 years, it's just way too soon.

Set 2: Truckin'-Loser-Next Time You See Me-Greatest Story Ever Told-Johnny B. Goode-Ripple-Not Fade Away>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away>Turn On Your Lovelight

Truth be told, my friends, tis sweetness & light. Finely played. As on 2/18, and as continued occasionally throughout the year, the “big jam” is laid down, cryptically, in the first set. Decent dose of well played, greasy Pigpen. Ripple, Oh, Ripple!!

And, truth be told, I do like these early, “primitive” Bird Songs, which for me reflect the deep emotion behind the song……………..

Rock on!
