    RE: spring 73 etc

I’ve enjoyed them all so far DV, but maybe it’s me, some seem to sorta plod for a awhile before they pick up steam in the second set. Recordings were inconsistent too…but?…maybe it was me, as Jim just said so we’ll, sometimes set and setting can have as much influence as the music itself! I actually got to sit a relax and listen to most, a couple I had on while doing household stuff, but I don’t think thats it?
I’ve always been a huge fan of fall/winter 73, one of my personal top tours, and I purposefully haven’t dug into summer 73 too much as you’d think we’d get some of those sooner than later, but until I got the spring 73 Dave’s, I knew nothing about that tour. 21 With 21, I was a tad nonplused at first, probably just hung up on no Dark Star or other head noise nonsense, but it’s grown on me a lot since. That whole jam sequence is superb, and I’ll take a HCSS anytime!
16 is one of my favorite Dave’s, so much so I purchased a copy off the black market! 32s good, actually need to listen to that as I’m not as familiar as I should be. I haven’t gotten to Crotchfester or Bu faf a lo yet…
Every show has a nice big jam sequence, many killer 73 Eyes, a couple ridiculous PITB, some good HCSS, and the Dark Stars and accompanying jams etc, so worth it even just to check those out. Sorry to be so vague but it’s all kinda a blur. As I say, all very similar: relaxed with mostly good playing, until the big jam goes through the roof, rinse and repeat…lol.
So far, I think the February shows are a bit more to my liking?

Spring 78: of the dozen and a half or so on this tour, I think I’ve hit 10 so far. Some of the Beatty’s are spectacular and this tour took me by surprise. Getting the big blown away surprise of 4/15 (DaP 37) opened up that flood gate as the only official release I have is 37. I had no clue about this tour before, so yeah, big surprise!
Hoping Realgone spits out Dicks 18 and that I can get disc copies of the other 2 Dave’s as long/short I don’t do files…actually might try to get 15 off the black market as sometimes those aren’t too outrageously expensive. Didn’t get subs until 21, but since I have a few others, thinking someday I’ll try to get real copies of the few missing so I’ll have 13 onward, with hopefully copies of the rest. I have at least copies of all but 5.
I still think, partly due to the fine Beatty’s that there’s a potential for a spring 78 box, but maybe not enough interest for that?
Awright, gotta head to the mine, staycation is over for now : (

    Hello, rockers!!!

Pick Of The Day: Family Dog At The Great Highway, February 28, 1970

As a matter of self-preservation, a man needs good friends or ardent enemies, for the former instruct him and the latter take him to task……

In November, we were teased with the Little Sadie and Black Peter, so we know that an excellent recording is in the vault. As far as early 1970 goes, the “big guns” of the Fillmores get most of the love, respect, and recognition, but this Family Dog run has some doggone good music!

Call it a Lovelight sandwich, a grateful buffet with something for almost everybody. Electric/acoustic, grease, jams, old and new, all laid out as if on a platter. Dig in and enjoy!!!

Those who have virtue always in their mouths, and neglect it in practice, are like a harp, which emits a sound pleasing to others, while itself is insensible of the music…..

    Rock on!

    Nashville v Normal

mmmm..... I might have to compare and contrast. It went down in my ever changing mind that Normal was, well it has that Scarlet Fire & Terrapin into drumz.. but Nashville had a crisper sound and better separation between the instruments, plus a really good Peggy-O and Estimated Eyes. Both shows have a good Lovin', but full disclosure the Bobby GL's never did it for me, too formulaic and his rants did not come across as genuine as Pigs. So a little hotter v better sound. But don't consider this an analysis, my listens tend to be more influenced by focus and frankly my mood and receptiveness.

I did both all 73 shows consecutively years ago and '78 through May.. but I am always doing stuff so I don't have the rabbit ears of OB and Rock Thing; their attention to detail is most appreciated and enjoyable to take in. Plus.. I'd gladly pay the price of an IMax theatre experience to listen to a show in casa Oroborous just to take in his personal, home edition Wall of Sound. I forked out big bucks 20 years ago for my system but it pales in comparison.

As for March '73, I walked away big on Philly and Baltimore but Boston Garden did not register and in hindsight it's hot, hot, hot. When I weigh on a show, it's an opinion at a point of time that can be bribed by party favors and mood for the day. A mortal flaw.. first world problems.

So I am to revisit 4/78. I think I need to work a little less and live a little more. I pulled down the new 2/17/73, that's on my list. I'd like to take in some Fall and Winter '73. A compare and contrast of the last two shows of the year perhaps.. Did Dick pick the right show for DiP1? Inquiring ears want to know.

I'd like to contribute more.. but it's been a challenging year full of distractions. Summer is coming, so there's that.

You don't have #7 OB? We need to change that, I think you would really like this show.

I will definitely go back and listen to #37 again. I know I had it up within the last couple of months.

I did listen to #15 from Nashville over the weekend and I don't think Bob was happy with the first set, "That's it, we quit" Good show and the sound quality is as good as #7. Nice Estimated Eyes and Wharf Rat.

Do you have any recommendations from your recent tour of March 73?

I mean, this is a hot period. What a tour this is. More from this tour would be welcomed.

    Slow day on the site.

Plus miscellaneous spins of DaP 45
Now playing 3/27/83, followed by 2/23/70.
    Don’t have Dave’s 7, one of 5 I don’t have copies of…
Hmmm, that’s a bold statement DV as DaP 37 blew me away.
Perhaps because I was not expecting it to be and sound as good as it was?
Every show I’ve heard so far from this tour is good, highly recommend 4/11 and 4/16 too!

Agree, like DaP 13 better than DaP 42.

Haven't listened to this show in a couple of years and wow, I think I like it even more now. A+ on sound quality and both sets deliver high energy Dead. Love the NFA, Black Peter, Around and Around and close it out with Werewolves of London. I went back and read the liner notes again and low and behold, they were written by Blair Jackson. Since I have 78 on my brain, I think I will check out Dave's 15 from 4/22 in Nashville. Of the three released from this time period 4/24 seems to be the top dog in my book. The William and Mary show is good, not great. On to Nashville.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

You cats are already on to 1973. I'm still savoring the gentle respite in the oasis of Austin.

Death don't have no mercy, but there's always time for lunch.
Thanks for reminding me of LL. I need to see if I can get reinstated over there.

Grateful Dead Live at The Auditorium, Austin, Tejas on 1970-02-23
Harpur College was another of my heavy, heavy rotation tapes back in the day, along with the 2/18/71 Capitol Theater show I've already mentioned numerous times. Both were massive inspirations. For what seems in hindsight like a fairly significant period of time, if it wasn't one of those, it was Reckoning.

I Know You Rider: Lovin' the energy and grit of this Rider. It's almost angst.

High Time: This is a song! It's a pretty weird song, too, and after attempting it several times, myself, I must say it isn't surprising it wasn't played often. Damn, it's hard to sing. I submitted a completely deconstructed version of this for the February Dead Covers Project a few years back. I made a point of not revisiting to the original before recording, just going off memory and some notes left in an old binder of songs. I'm sure the ever-growing defenders of canon were thinking, "You ain't doin' it right if you ain't readin' it off a teleprompter." It was an "interpretation". Lol.

Dire Wolf: What a lyric. An electric version, no less. Pretty mellow electric set, almost acoustic.

Yellow Dog Joke… ah… well way to go for completely screwing up the joke, Bobby… actually, I'm not sure I've ever heard him make it all the way to the punch line. We should all heed Jerry's advice and "Don't encourage him." Everything was so light and positive in these days. Phil could be a bit surly, as we've already heard in this tape.

Monkey and the Engineer: This was a standard in my old folk-rock duo. My partner played it and I just followed along. I'd have to start from scratch to figure out how to play it again. Such good stories in these tunes.

Little Sadie: Nice. This wasn't on the Harpur College tape or Reckoning. Another dark story. I don't see how they could possibly be breaking strings playing such gentle music.

Me and My Uncle: I don't recall hearing an acoustic version. It's a great song and works in any format. At this point everyone hadn't already heard it a million times. Imagine that!

Black Peter: One of my favourite tunes ever. Doesn't get much darker than a song from the point of view of a death bed. Started doing this one myself occasionally a few years ago, but I always need a cheat sheet for the bridge. Nothing repeats. There are some interesting mnemonic connections between the chords and the words that help. Just have to sit down and do my homework. Ahh… yeah, Pig sittin' in nicely on the organ. This song needs a really delicate hand, but the organ adds a nice little gospel flavour. If only Pig coulda added just a touch more flair to his playing to fill in some lines before Jerry takes his solo. Pig's got the tone.

Seasons of the Heart: Never heard this before. Great pick! Thanks.

Uncle Johns: Have heard this one a few times. 😉

Not Fade Away: I'm gonna call the union! The Galactic Rock'n'Roll Union! That needs to be a band name, or a song, or something! Crazy to think this tune was in their set their entire career. Some good ol' primal energy here. Jerry's "wild" tone. He must've had the amplifier turned WAY up, cause it sounds like he's not in the mix at all. His guitar is just being picked up by a vocal mic, or something. Basically, no drums, either. I can't keep track of which guitars he was playing in the early years. He seemed to play whatever was available after giving up the Starfire. Sounds kind of like a Stratocaster, The Graham Nash Strat, perhaps? Alligator did not come on the scene until later, if I recall correctly. This tone has even more of a stereotypical Stratocaster sound than Alligator, which retained very little Fender electronics by the time it gets heard on Europe '72. Anyone? Oh, cool call and response with Pig. TC has already left at this point? I need to get my timelines straight. Bobby diggin' in with some soulfully aggressive singing, rather than simply aggressive.

Mason's Children: I can't recall ever hearing this, either. The name comes up often, but it's not on anything I've listened to regularly. Again, thanks for this pick! As you say, not exactly high-energy stuff, but some very rare pieces here. Always appreciate the chance to learn something new about this fascinating family.

it is time to wander into GD72 again

other CDs for today:

Sounds like a winner to me.

Yes, GOGD, we definitely need some new release news. It has been what, 13 months since last year's box was announced. Let's get it out.

Willie Wonka Jim?

Dead and Co, yes nothing will ever compare to the Dead, but, after one year of this B. S. I know I wouldn't hesitate to go see them if they come anywhere near the upper midwest.

Hang in there all.

Man, if the shows I saw during this time were like this, I might of made more effort to go to more the last years....
Not a perfectly played show, but the misses weren’t any worse than any other year and there was much to like.
Starting with a good Here Comes Sunshine, one of the few songs I really wanted, but never got, sigh...
Decent Feel Like A Stranger followed by Jackaroe, instead of same o, not to be confused with Same Thing. Decent version but I was never a huge fan of this song no matter if the Dead, The Band, or the ABBs etc...actually the Band did a decent job with it.
Lazy River Road has that infectious quality where it grows on you to where outta nowhere your singing it in your head and trying to remember the words. El Paso: the acoustic helps give it a little freshness so it’s not just Bob playing the same 5 songs ALL the time. New Speedway Boogie was nice if not perfect and another yea for something different!
Ok Promised Land to finish the set. Actually was ripping pretty good and then JG just sorta stops...
Haven’t heard too many Scarlet/Fires lately so that was nice, followed by the whole ridiculously good mid set section kicked off with Playing and including the last DS and some magnificent weirdness that I need to hear much more of!
I Need A Miracle was a bit of a let down just because of the complete vibe change. Sometimes I dig it right outta space but other times it seems to rude for the mood? But JG slides back there with a sweet Stella, then capped off by Maggy/Liberty. Wow, another fine show from 94 that I’d never would have expected etc. Another fine truffle that the finely tuned senses of GOGD has sniffed out for our enjoyment. Good boy, Ruff! (Thanks!)
That’s 2 for 2 boys with the great 90s picks, keep em coming!

ALASKA was truly enjoyable too. All 3 shows were solid with some cool variances and fun unusual song placements.
Jerry was on and Brent still in that nice fresh new stage sonically. Makes you wonder why they didn’t break out DS sooner/more then they did as he certainly would of been up for it?
I think if they had done these shows 9 or 10 years later (when older and more possibly able to fund) I would have gone because I’m sure it was a unusual laid back scene up there. I know nothing about vault tapes, but most of what I heard was good enough to speculate what if? Perhaps an assorted 80 box from different venues?

8/3/82: didn’t get there yet but that’s where I’m going next and then I’ll try to get to 3/9/81. Saw a good show on 3/13 and I had a tape from the 10th I believe so interested in this one as it seems like March 81 is another nice little niche.

Edit; didn’t we do 12/15/72 recently?

Only thing I don’t like about them is occasionally they plod along at a crawl. Or Bob messes with the tempos too much: slow songs are now fast, and ones that should be fast are now ssssslllooooowwwwww!
Haven’t experienced it much, but occasionally ugghhh. But that’s nit picking as most of the 8? D&C shows I’ve seen were enjoyable and worth the effort. Scary how big they were getting though.
First year in Boulder the place was half empty, by the last year (2019) things were getting too crowded!
It’s crazy that they still keep pullin in more fresh meat!

Completely agree, they could let it rip more. With Jerry at the helm, they let it shredded it.

Yes, DVikes. Gene Wilder at his best.

if so, I am at the moment

The dangerous kitchen
If it aint't one thing it's another
In the middle of the night when you get home
The bread things are all dry 'n' scratchy
The meat thing
Where the cats ate through the paper
The can things with the sharp little edges
That can cut your fingers when you're not looking
The soft little things on the floor that you step on
They can all be dangerous
Sometimes the milk can hurt you
(If you put it on your cereal
Before you smell the plastic container)
And the stuff in the strainer
Has a mind of its own
So be very careful
In the dangerous kitchen
When the night time has fallen
And the roaches are crawlin'
In the kitchen of danger
You can feel like a stranger
The bananas are black
The got flies in the back
And also the chicken
In the dish with the foil
Where the cream is all clabbered
And the salad is frightful
Your return in the evening
Can be less than delightful
You must walk very careful
You must not lean against it
It can get on you clothing
It can follow you in
As you walk to the bedroom
And you take all your clothes off
While you're sleeping
It crawls off
It gets in your bed
It could get on your face then
It could eat your complexion
You could die from the danger
Of the dangerous kitchen
Who the fuck wants to clean it?
It's disgusting and dirty
The sponge on the drainer
Is stinky and squirty
If you squeeze it when you wipe up
What you get on your hands then
Could un-balance your glands and
Make you blind or whatever
In the dangerous kitchen
At my house tonight

Broke out Dicks Picks 30. Listened. Then I read wickedpedia and was reminded it’s not the complete 3/25/72. Next thing I did was relisten all the March 72 Academy of Music on to my phone. Halfway through that run of shows. It’s awesome.
The Capitol Theater February 1971 run was a kick ass set of 50th anniversaries.
Relisten has streamlined access to so many incredible Grateful Dead concerts.

Great poem, thanks Proudfood.

In addition to pickle spears, never mix food with psychedelics unless it involves Jell-O. On a related note, never mix psychedelics with Bill Cosby either.

Rules to live by. Just say no to pickle spears and Jell-O'less food while tripping.

so just getting around to this after throwing it out there in response to a GOGD comment about mid-set Let It Grow(s).

first set is "chock full" of all sorts of goodies. Set II strays off the beaten path into striking and beautiful territory. Shakedown kicks ass. excellent Samson. To Lay Me Down is gorgeous. and, yes, that Let it Grow! He's Gone > Other One out of Space (ca. '73 stuff). edit - i guess there's usually a Trucking sandwiched in there :)

and Stella Blue . . . .

this wasn't an official pick of the day but top shelf early 80s summer tour fun. recommend the chappel matrix, its particularly good Set II - https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1982/08/03?source=93245

12/15/72 I think it's another Nudie Show :)

We haven't officially done too much December '72 only 12/31/72.

Glad you appreciated that 3/30/94 OB, I was glad to stumble on to that too.
VGuy did you listen to 3/31?
Curious...

I'm on a 90s role I guess.
Stumbled into 3/11/92 today.
It's sounding good!

Need to catch up on the 8/3/82 & the 3/9/81 but... I think I can do that at some point ;)

Strider is off in the Academy of music with his Relisten app ranging the trails.

Where's that Box announcement DeadVikes?

Jim & Proudfoot stay out of the kitchen.

Alright, good stuff you all!

EDIT: BLUECROW - you've sold me. Love the mid-set Let It Grow!

want some Coffee with that?

Gonna try and catch up on 8/3/82 today and maybe get to 3/9/81 as well.

Started out the day with the GDHour 9/2/68 revisit, cool to hear Pig laying down the tasty organ.
Wonder if this was before or after the "firing"?
I'm assuming it's after, based on both the engagement of Bob & Pig on that show.
But... I can't remember exactly.
I know the "firing" was around October '68.
But not sure when the meeting / discussions occurred.
Kinda want to hear the tape that exists of that meeting, also kinda don't.
The crowd response to St. Stephen on 9/2 always strikes me.
Fairly new song for the band at that time and I wonder how many people in the crowd in Washington had heard it or if they were just responding to it's power.

So 3/11/92 is a good show btw.
Gonna turn on King Bee 3/31/94 and check it out as I'm curious to hear it again.

Jim - I liked your take on Double Drummers in the DaP V37 post, thoughtful write up.

Basically just saying Hi and rambling on about TGOGD.
Morning!

EDIT: King Bee
Pretty Funky! Not quite the Pigpen version, but makes for a good Bob tune, and would've definitely taken this over say: Walkin' Blues, or any of the new songs.
Looks like they only played it 2 times? 12/8/93 & this final one on 3/31/94.
Never dug King Bee when I was a kid, but after hearing & seeing Jerry & Pig playing that tune at the Acid Tests I really began to appreciate it.
Now whenever I see it on a setlist I can't wait to hear it.
Funny how that happens.
Now I'm hooked.
EDIT2: Jerry & Bob give it a good tear on 12/8/93. Couple keepers!
The 90s be rockin' me this week so far.

With the rumor of Nudie Suits I started down the 12/15 rabbit hole last night. SirMick transfer sounds mighty fine so far though the song listings are off by one.

Stumbled on a Internet Archive post from attendee of 2/19/73 that I hadn't seen before. He's a regular there from what I remember.

Poster: duckpond74 Date: May 14, 2014 10:36am
Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: the nudie suits
I was at the 2-19-73 show at the Amphitheater, and my recollection was they came out for the first set wearing them - and before playing the first tune, they made kind of a big deal of them. I remember Jerry and Bob bantering on about them while showing them off to the crowd a la fashion show antics. They also went on about them at some point during the first set, around either "You Ain't Woman Enough" or one of Bob's cowboy songs - I remember being amused, and the band seemed to be having fun with fancy threads. It felt like a different show when they came out for the second set wearing jeans and t-shirts . . . I have a faint memory of Jerry hanging his embroidered jacket on a chair or mic stand to show it off.

And for those of us still hoping for tapes of the whole night, and trying to remember what all was played, . . . I do remember Billy spending some time playing a big gong as a regal attention-getter, but can't for the life of me remember if it was for a possible "Morning Dew" or "Dark Star", or during the missing part of "the Other One", or even sound check??? If someone has a better memory of what was played that night, please chime in. I also remember being really curious and amused by the people behind us, going back and forth about what was played and when, and checking their notes scribbled in the dark . . . I remember thinking 'what a silly, strange and distracting thing to do' at a show . . . silly me. (https://archive.org/post/1016982/the-nudie-suits).

3/9/81 later.

I forgot about that Nudie show.
Let's make 12/15/72 the POTD today and everybody can catch up or do what they want in true GD fashion ;)

Dig those comments BlueCrow, thanks for sharing. It's amazing to think about them wearing those suits up there on stage. Great picture of Jerry, Bob & Donna from 12/15 with the tie-dye speaker cabinets behind them. Amazing. Love the way the band looked in '72.

Good times!

Glad you survived the Kitchen Proudfoot, and I'll have to look for that recording

Alright, time to go further... into the Nudie!

not sure if 12/15 is a Nudie show. It's at the Long Beach Arena and is sandwiched between the Nudie Shows in Winterland 12/10-12(?) and 12/31. not that this matters much to my ears.

onward!

Yeah, I was under the assumption that this photo was from 12/15/72 but can't find any confirmation quickly (love this pic)
https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/jpfbnw/wish_i_had_a_time…

I guess the main reason I thought that was because I used pic for my "album" cover in iTunes.
At the moment I'm totally not sure why or when I did that now that I looked around.
So.... 12/15/72 as a Nudie, not confirmed at all.

Maybe some smart person can confirm date on that photo.
It might also be from Winterland 12/31/72.

Love this stuff.

EDIT - BLUECROW Did they do the Nudie on the 12/10-12/12 run?
This might be a project for Lost Live Dead... if you're out there.
Give us the low down on the Nudie!
BTW LLD You rock, I'm amazed at how much time you've put into researching the GD and it's always fascinating.
Big Fan!!

I did find another picture that appears from to be that same show with Donna in red dated as 2/19/73 so I'd need to do some further research to attribute a specific date to that photo.

Isn't there a group of cats that focus on dating photos?

I've been meaning to look into that.
I wanna check out their work.

Alright, I'll just say this... whoo hoo Grateful Dead!

They definitely wore Nudies 12/12 per a concert attendee towards end of that same Internet Archive thread.
"Poster: corry Date: May 13, 2014 6:47pm
Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: the nudie suits
I saw the Grateful Dead at Winterland on December 12, 1972. Jerry, Bob and Phil wore nudie suits, I think Keith may have at least had a Nudie jacket. They did not change clothes. I saw them numerous times afterwards, but I never saw them wear Nudie Suits again. Of course, it was my first Dead show and I thought nothing of it. I figured they always wore such things. It turned out I was wrong, but well, that's life."

I think the really nice color photos with Jerry, Donna in red, and Bob are from 12/12/72. I've seen photos from what is clearly the same show also attributed to New Years '72, 2/19/73, and Nassau 3/19/73. The reason I think 12/12 (or another date in that run) is that Jerry is playing a really distinctive guitar. It's the Erlewine Stratocaster that Garcia played for a handful of shows in fall '72 - note the really big numbers on the neck. Reddit comment: "Made by dan erlewine (he’s the lead personality for the stewmac guitar tips channel) in the early 70’s, it features a rosewood pick guard and the funny number fret markers. Not much else is known about this guitar, and this is really the only show where he used it. Odd, because erlewine states it was a custom build for Garcia himself. Erlewine states here that it was a laminate maple neck, the wood from an “ancient piano”. He himself states it wasn’t the greatest build standard. Saying this, it’s not really a surprise that it never really showed up at any other gigs, as we all know Garcia was pretty particular (for good reason) and the weird design choice was probably why. It had a stop tail piece and a brass nut, very similar to alligator. He asked for $500, and Garcia gave him $900!" https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/dszksk/dressd_to_the_1_3… I ran into dead links trying to pursue this one further.

Disregard the above as to "this" being the "only" show Jerry played it at. Known shows for Erlewine Stratocaster here - http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2019/08/jerry-garcia-instrument-history-…

per Deadessays 12/12/72 is penultimate known date Jerry played the Erlewine in concert. He played it one last time for part of that great Des Moines show on 5/13/73!!

photos with strong attribution for 2/19/73 show Garcia playing Alligator - https://www.gdao.org/items/show/831582

photos of New Years show seem to show Jerry with Alligator also. Plus, given how high profile the New Year show was, if Jerry played the Erlewine you think that would have been noted.

I came across a version of the Nassau movie that is synched up to audio - the footage is playing in the band. I'll see if I can find the link. Very cool time capsule, fuzzy as it is. You can see Phil really groovin in that Phil way from time to time.

as for 12/15/72 - big time excellent (edit - with some weird tape speed stuff going on in Trucking)

edit - brief video clip of Jerry showing off the Erlewine Strat, shared by Sam Cutler 9/20 on his facebook page (from comments on Deadessays). - https://www.facebook.com/1419240388141325/videos/462957607997895/?hc_re…

I pretty much don't do facebook but Sam's page is very cool. Looks like he just opened a youtube channel last few days!

Nice Sleuthing BlueCrow!

I like to see that.
Some good info here, I read through it in haste, but will circle back and take it in with some nice music for the soundtrack.
Thinking 12/15/72 ;)

Nice work!

Looking at 11/15/71, Austin. Another stellar Road Trips release, #3.2. Extra credit for the bonus disc 11/14/71.
Let me know if this works for today.

I noticed the Road Trips releases were not Rhino releases. Anybody know why? I know they had the contact with the Dead during that time period and were releasing other shows and box sets during this period.

Let's get some real news on this year's box set. Anybody? Bolo?

All this talk about nudie suits. I'm looking at the picture and I'm thinking, I'm missing something here. I thought "nudie" suits were coveralls that made you looked nude. Not country western hank williams type jackets!!!!

DUH!

DV - up the road a year right now as I'm listening to 11/22/72 - I think most folks were here (11/22) not too long ago but I was off in the weeds somewhere. wanted to hear one of the shows with the Erlewine guitar.

Dennis - intro to wikipedia entry - "Nuta Kotlyarenko (December 15, 1902 – May 9, 1984), known professionally as Nudie Cohn, was an American tailor who designed decorative rhinestone-covered suits, known popularly as "Nudie Suits", and other elaborate outfits for some of the most famous celebrities of his era.[1][2] He also became famous for his outrageous customized automobiles."

your confusion is understandable - it's an "unusual" name

Sounds like some Texas Dead today.

Those November '72 PITBs... my oh my!

And... that 12/15/72 PITB! That was great, along with that jam out of Truckin' > Dark Star > Morning Dew.
Tasty stuff.
Good show that one, Garcia & Lesh are on FIRE!

so I'd never taken a look at any of the custom autos he did until now - just want to share this profile of one cause it is so completely over the top and the article has got great photos - https://www.car-revs-daily.com/2015/11/22/1963-pontiac-bonneville-roy-r…

sort of fits in with the Texas theme ;)

The Garcia Nudie Cost unfortunately burned up in a fire. The story is on internet and how the person obtained the coat, it was lost in a house fire. To bad, nice collectors item.

I had never heard of them either. I have seen pics of Jerry in the jacket though.. Learn something new every day.

Yea, that is weird.. they signed a ten year deal with Rhino in 2005, I believe FW the Complete Recordings was the last item truly released by GD Merchandising.. the Download Series came out about the same time. The first Road Trips didn't come out until 2007, but you are correct.. the label for the early Road Trips was Grateful Dead. I still suspect Rhino was involved they just hadn't hashed out all the details of the transition and finalized the legalese.

I do remember there being a hold up.. Dicks Picks stopped, digital downloads were not very satisfying.. and then the Road Trips announcement a year and a half later. Also, they did four Road Trips per year except in the final year when we got Road Trips 4.5 from Boston (a good one) so season four had five quarters. So something changed mid stride, there must have been something going on behind the scenes.

The first CD that was officially released under Rhino records was Road Trips Volume 4 Number 2. They talk about it a bit on Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead_discography#Road_Trips

It took me some time to find my Road Trips to figure this out, they were not on the usual shelf because they are sort of a different size and shape.. after some digging I found them randomly mixed in with the brown paper bags we use to pack lunches, I can see how you would make that mistake.. Looking through all these, Blair Jackson was much more involved and wrote liner notes. It looks like Scott McDougal did the artwork. Ahh... the priceless bonus discs.

A rough transition and vanishing profits? It was about the same time we saw Blair's Golden Road disappear and a new take on the cover art, an attempt to cut costs??? Anyway, I don't miss the lunch bag cardboard and I welcome (for the most part) complete shows. #ReleaseMore68!

Jim, don't you keep these under lock and key?

Thanks for the information and checking it out.

I will say for those of you that don't have RT3.2, do yourself a favor and go get it. To my ears, one of the best quality recordings I have ever heard. Rex Jackson knew what he was doing and must have passed it on to Betty.
Oh and the Dark Star, El Paso, Dark Star is fantastic!

Stay well.

Nice!

Total rookie move, I was so enamored by the Nudie suits, it didn't cross my mind to look at the instruments.
I dig Bob with his suit & an SG.
Sad to hear Jerry's suit burned up.
But def a story here behind the short lived Nudie suits.

How'd that Erlewine guitar sound on 11/22 BlueCrow?

Love that November '72 tour.
And gotta give another shout out to 12/15/72 PITB & Jam out of Truckin' > Dark Star.
If you missed it, def revisit those tunes for a fun trip.
Jerry guitar licks at the beginning of the Jam.. otherworldly.

Alright, I'm lost.
I missed the Texas Dead yesterday.
Found myself listening to 12/15/72 PITB & Dark Star again and reading about Nudie suits & guitar forensics.
Checked out the 8/3/82 which was fun, but I was distracted and mostly paid attention to TLMD & Let It Grow which are worth the trip.

And then stumbled into some more '90s goodness.
This time Set 2 of 3/18/95.
I'd recommend it to 90s fans & doubters.
If only for the Iko, listen to Jer having fun!
If that doesn't bring a smile, well I can't help ya.
But all of Set 2 makes for a good time if you ask me.

If there's a pick for today, I can't tell.
But if not I might seek out the Erlewine guitar sound.

As for RoadTrips, I know I heard Dave talk about the discussion with Rhino to end the Road Trips series and start Dave's Picks. I think it probably was something that was started or in the works before the Rhino partnership / formula was really established. Def sounds like there was opposition from Heads who wanted full shows and the series was not a hit in regards to sales and feedback. Can't say I love the format in comparison to Dave's Picks.
But I will say this.. if they release it, I want it ;)
"If you build it, they will come." - ghost voice

All in all, good stuff you guys, Happy Friday!

He writes everything's been returned which was owed

Dig it. Box > Visions of Johanna. That's a hell of an opener.

I'd say Visions & She Belongs To Me are my two favorite Dylan covers by Jer.

It always strikes me when I listen to Visions, that Jer only played it with the GD during the two years he was essentially dying.

That's powerful stuff.

Sure do like this band!

Thanks for the share Proudfoot.

PS - What.. No Box Set news?!?!
But I second big props to all the GD Women!
And Phil's got a Bday coming up :)
Bird noises during Bird Song on 4/22/86 are groovy.

Ya got my eye since I was at this one. The tour I barely remember, veg fest 86....
According to a poster on archive, it’s on YouTube? If so, that’s my entertainment tonight ; )

11/4&15/71: DV, interesting your thoughts on quality for this one? Though I dig much of it, parts sound pretty distorted to me? I’ve noticed similar on E72 shows and perhaps others from this era. Didn’t spend quality time so I’d have to go back etc, but I’m thinking it’s just their actual rigs I,e., they had to push those old Fenders since they weren’t using McIntosh MC 2300 power amps yet on the instruments...so I’m sure part of it is their just playing loud and overdriving their rigs etc, but it could also be tape over saturation too? I remember this one really surprising me though when I first got it.

What else?
The 82 was cool but not mind blowing. Nice solid 82 show though perhaps a tad mellow?
The 3/9/81 seemed a little meh to me? Now I was doing other things but still, usually there are enough things in a good show that will divert my attention...but maybe it was just situational?
Forget where else y’all been poking around? Haven’t messed with those 72s? Guess I’m still burned out on early 70s stuff...meaning burned out on the same old Bob tunes over and over....definitely been editing some of those outta my mix...

3/18/95 looks interesting, same with the night before? But,
Think I might go 6/6/92 just cause nothing else really shaking and I’m trying to (sort of) work my way through post 91 shows that I was at, but maybe haven’t heard, or official releases from the time, that I haven’t got to YET...I’m looking at you Boxilla! Also, have shit to do so this would be a good one for secondary listening...

3/19/86 OB

Some good jams on this one.
Started up at:
Visions > TMNS
China > Rider, PITB > D> S
and it is working on this Sunny Friday afternoon :)

Sounds like it was fun!

PS - OB Taper's Compendium gives cool review, great story about Truckin'.
Just listened and it gives some fun insight to what you’re hearing:
Guess they were fixin' Bob's mic.
He was acting agro.
Once fixed, he proceeds to forget all the words.
Then at the end… they shred the place down!!
Bring back any memories?

RT3. 2. Give it another shot Oroborous. The official release is spectacular. I don't hear any distortion. I know Doc will weigh in on this show at some point but we might have to wait until November.

Anyway, when I look at some of my favorite early 70 releases, there is a common theme, Rex Jackson.

Are you still out there Otis? Carlo? Charlie?

It being the weekend I’m home and have plans to listen to a lot of GOGD.
Currently working my way through 12-19-73% DP1.
This definitely screams for remastering, full on Plangentization/Normanization. Then Box it up with 12-18-73 and a few other shows from December 73.

Next I’ll move on DV’s pick.

Also am thinking of doing 2-28-69 vinyl since I went with digital on the anniversary.

Vguy,
I’m enjoying some YLT too. Been checking out some of the YouTube offerings. Will definitely try to catch them live, hopefully in the not too distant future.

for me is 3 26 72
Thats a Daves methinks

Also 5 26 95

If any 95 show deserves a release, I say 5 26 95 should be considered
3 18 was a TTATS, methinks again
7 9 because its historical significance

I will get out 7 19 74 and put it in the CD case I keep as an on-deck circle of sorts. It holds 64 plus CDs

thats a big on-deck circle

I guess I’ll have to do some more research? Worried I might have a batch of stuff I copied around the same time that all sounds funky...no idea how or why?
3/19/86 is on YouTube and not too bad considering...biggest surprise is JGs stage presence etc. He Doesn’t seem to jam as much, but he’s moving around and getting into the music, like more into the song then the playing if that makes sense? He’s big as a house and bloated but otherwise he looks pretty good! Not a chin hang in sight ; )
Maybe not great but a good show with a few wobblies. A good outing for a tour opener.
Bobs all full of the piss, he’s loud and proud on the video, including the whole fun Truckin/bad mic cable scene. Unfortunately It only seems vaguely familiar as I’ve seen similar antics, though perhaps never seen him jump to Phil’s mic? Being a roadie, I’m sure I was aware of the situation but I just can’t recall?
So I still don’t recall much, like how I got there or who with lol, though I’m sure I was hanging near the board.
Cool runs (Hampton & Philly); first Visions, First Box return, First Road Runner, First Desolation, and the second of only 6 Hand Jives.

I’ll try and get to 17 but we usually listen to other stuff on the weekends and I actually feel like reading for a change...
ONWARD!
