    September 3 - September 9, 2007
We have a tremendous variety of music for you this week, spanning almost 20 years of the Grateful Dead’s recorded history, and we hope you’ll find this week’s journey as enjoyable as we did while preparing it for you.

As we mentioned last week, we have a bit more music from the Family Dog in San Francisco, specifically the encore from 9/6/69, a nice Pigpen-led Midnight Hour, with plenty of good jamming in the background.

Our next chronological stop on this week’s trip is 9/9/72 at the Palladium in Hollywood (venue of the performance of one of the best-ever versions of Hard To Handle, in 1971). From this show in 1972, we have the second set jam of He’s Gone>Truckin’>The Other One, which features a reel flip that is just a fact of life in these 7” reel-to-reel tapes, which run at 7.5 ips, meaning the tape is changed every 47 or so minutes. It’s always fortunate when the cuts are located in acceptable places, like this, rather than the brutal cuts that often destroy the listening experience. This one really isn’t too bad.

At this point we jump forward a year to 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum, with a song that mightn’t be what people think of first when they think of 1973: Looks Like Rain. This is a really great rendition, and just sounds so darn good, we thought you’d enjoy it. And, for a dose of quintessential 1973 music, we have the first set closing song from the same show: Playing In The Band. I really can’t get enough of these 1973 Playing In The Bands, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Going forward to 1985, to 9/3/85 in Kansas City, we have the pre-Drums sequence featuring That’s It For The Other One>Eyes of the World>I Don’t Need Love. The “Cryptical” part of the sequence in 1985 never quite matched the energy or perfection of the 1969 versions, but the “Other One” portion of the song is very good, as is the Eyes and the rare Don’t Need Love. This is drawn from the Beta PCM digital masters.

Lastly this week, we have a couple of songs from London on 4/7/72, specifically Pigpen’s Chinatown Shuffle and a powerhouse Me and My Uncle.

As sometimes happens, we have no idea what we’ll have for you next week, but looking at what we have to select from, it’s bound be to be a nice selection of some excellent music. Let us know what you think by writing with questions, comments, suggestions or requests.

    I have a request
I am glad that you guys pulled the MP3's. It was getting a bit ridiculous. I, like so many others (because of the format), thought that these were gimmes. All the complainers need to go back and look at the file that they have been dumping these things in. There are 384 items that take up 8.38 GB and would take 4.2 days to listen to. Most of us mere mortals cannot listen to them more than once anyway, so why keep them around taking up valuable disk space. I frankly prefer the remastered official releases from the vault for repeat listens and look forward to collecting all 60 or so of them that have been released to date. I hope you folks at dead.net will keep up the good work of documenting this remarkable history. I cannot think of another band that has a one-stop historical documentation like the one presented here. I have enjoyed it. Thanks. My request: Can you arrange it so that we can listen to the entire week's selection on the taper's section with one click? It would make things more convenient.

Put us out of our misery or bring back the DOWNLOADS!
The fact that you can't stream let alone download makes this site disappointing. Bring back the downloads or just start making full shows downloadable. Enough of this nonsense.

While I can understand the fury that some people may feel at this gift being taken away, I will say that there are other websites where you can find entire shows and download them with no trouble at all. Besides, if you really dig the songs that have been posted here, wouldn't you probably want the entire show? If anyone wants me to let them know where these websites are, I'll be happy to do so. Meanwhile, don't let it spoil your buzz. There are more important things in life to gripe about. cheers MJF

I though this was dead.net. I've never heard such negative and nasty remarks directed at this band or this web site and it's administrators. It's seems as though many on this thread have a strong sence of entitlement. Does this band really owe you anything? I for one think the tapers section is a gift, and a pretty nice one. I'm sorry for those who have been having trouble steaming these tunes, but I'm sure that will be corrected soon enough, (anyway I think the real problem lies with the individual computers rather than with this site) just working out the bugs. I had no idea there were so many ungrateful Dead fans out there. Do the rest of us a favor, stop bashing Deadheads like Dave Gans and Dave Lemieux who go out of thier way each week to bring us great new dead music, free of charge! Don't ruin it for the rest of us.Calling the host of the Grateful Dead Hour a tool? In what universe do you live in? Attacking the mods because they're too nice? Where am I? This is sad. -Hunter "The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean." www.geocities.com/newcamptownraces/ gratefulgoddamneddead.html

wow! thanks again DL and DG for giving us such awesome music to listen to!I hooked up roadrunner just so I could stream the taper's section and grateful dead radio hour, it works great and sounds beautiful! I was digging the mp3 downloads but whatever...I also got a cord to run sound through home stereo, rockin' and loud! Heck practically every show I could ever want streams in soundboard on archive.org don't forget...Also haven't heard any talk of the concert vault (Bill Graham's vault and king biscuit etc.) ALL BANDS! CHECK IT OUT!! P.S. always looking to buy a new release.... Ben

Hey now, can't stream the music at work, love to download it and keep some great Dead in the background all day, appreciate all the work, would gladly pay a per week, or annual membership fee, for the ability to download these nuggets. Have bought ALL the official releases, and would pay for these.

Hey David, Ignore the whiners. They are just a bunch of babies that quickly throw a temper tantrum just because they can't get something for nothing. There are plenty of us out here that appreciate the service and are grateful this music is available to listen to. I can believe how petty people can be.

.... We all have an opinion. Regardless, it is your work that helps keeps the flame lit. Although I have posted my disappointment in this entire 'digital downloading' episode and the past Bobby issue we are all obviously passionate about our beloved GD and the community that draws us to it like a moth to a flame. Their will always be two sides of a coin. Though I have deep rooted thoughts on the download issue I also appriciate your 'job' in the matter. (I think that most of do..) Personaly I do enjoy listening to your program and reading your message. Keep it up! For those who can not stream; Don't fret! Download the app if you don't have it. For those who can not listen at work due to the polocy then all you can do is listen on your home PC's / Mac's. The reality is that anyone can still capture / record streaming media if they really wanted to. (Just Google "recording streaming media") Anyhoo... I, for one, enjoy your message and program. Now.. Can't we all just get-a-long?!?!? Joe (Itie) Antinucci, Rhode Island

This was not his decision. He's also trying to keep his job. I'm sure he feels like he's stuck between a rock and a hard place with this whole Rhino thing. Enjoy what you have. I know I have more GD music to last a lifetime. If you want to blame anyone, vent your thoughts on the brilliant marketing department at Rhino. I wonder if those guys got their MBA's from one of those emails that goes around saying, "earn your degree in less than a month"...

NOTHING IS FREE!Maintaining the vault, creating publicity, paying the staff, website upkeep, all these things cost money. So when everyone whins that all the music should be free to download, burn to media, share with friends it's simply unrealistic. The band isn't generating the income the way it used to, people are losing their jobs in attempts to make this all cost effective. It's time we all give back! When an official release comes around, buy it. I don't mean to be so harsh and if anyone knew the hard choices being made so we can continue to enjoy the music perhaps you'd agree with me, perhaps not. Like it or not, this is a game of dollars and cents. Nothing is free, even Free is not free anymore.

David,There are programs out there that will allow you to record streaming music. Do a Google search! So why not just offer the music in a format that makes it easy for your fans to download it? I like to download the music, but also always buy whatever is being offered by the band. I think you'll find most fans do the same.

I personally think the GD has put out more music than any other band. But it is important that they did and hopefully will continue to. Even Phish would have to come in second to the number of live shows put out by any one band. I guess it would be important to follow that up by saying that some bands sound a whole lot better live than in the studio, and the GD is one of them. I personally couldn't care less about purchasing any old studio stuff; it is mostly fair to poor. In fact it is crappy, and over-rated. Without the live shows, the Dead would be just another old band falling by the way-side to the annals of history. So with that in mind, let's keep the hope alive that good new releases will be coming out in the future. The problem in the past is that although Dick had his short list, many releases were done when so many better shows could've been put out. And that is the problem. We want some of the great shows put out, like 6/9/77, and the like. That is why people keep itching for more shows, because some of the ones put out are merely okay. Not that I'm saying there are no great shows released, but they are few and far between. Greg SC

No response on how pathetic their decision is to instantly cut the lifeline to point us towards full shows that we would graciously buy. I will NOT buy anything from RHINO. Plan to Boycott....there's enough great dead stuff at archive and etree. Now if Rhino says we're going to make everything digital -- tell archive to pull it all cause we can make money. I will give a big F!@K You to Rhino and the GD Organization. This is bad but PLEASE don't steep that low!!!!!!!!

I have 1500+ hours of soundboard, including large stretches of 1973, 1974, 1977 and 1985 and 1988. Those are my five favorite years. If anyone knows of a fast, reasonably inexpensive way for me to tranfer these hundreds of tapes to CD, I will share with anyone and everyone. That was the whole reason the Dead let all of us tape for all those years...to share and discuss shows. That is the whole thing lost on the lame bastards running this site now...they want to control and measure out music that was never meant to be. Open up the vault and stop being so lame about it all....I also agree with some of the comments above....screw Rhino and the others like them. They just don't get it. Few do.....

i was very upset like many others when the downloading stopped. i believe that the entity that owns the vault stopped the downloads. yes davids explanation was lame. maybe he had to do that for legal reasons. i apologized to david for initial critical comments towards him. i dont know the truth but what i do know is that i no longer get excited about mondays or wednesdays. i no longer go to the tapers section. only occasionally to see whats up. what was a great moment for us, that apparently was too good to be true, has turned into a sad moment for many of us. not all im sure, but probably more people felt hurt by this sudden action than not hurt. i thank those who worked hard to get the stuff on the air. but now the air is out of the balloon. so sad. peace.

I agree with David Gans. 8 GB wasn't enough? Yeah, I'm disappointed too. Yeah, the reason for pulling the DL was shoddy. Yes, I want more releases. But honestly, all the complaining is getting old and tired. And the nastiness is rabid and grotesque. Feh! The convenience of downloading and listening when and where I like was great. Oh well! Guess I'll just have to listen to the dozens of vault releases and hundreds of audience recordings I already have instead.

was made in response to a specific poster's complaint. Somebody asked if it was so wrong to want a few freebies for their iPod, and Gans asked why 8 gigs of freebies weren't enough. Basically it seemed like he was responding to the "sense of entitlement" that many have been pointing out as being on display recently. As far as that goes, I think his comment was fair, and doesn't rate him being called a "tool" (as he was shortly thereafter) or "holier-than-thou." Like D Lemieux, you have to applaud D Gans for making available what he does--check out GDHour 421 posted this week, fantastic pre-Dead Jerry--and assume that the format decision wasn't his. That said, I found his comment momentarily jarring, too. Is it really such a good idea, from the organization's perspective, to ever suggest to a Deadhead that s/he has enough Dead? I mean, most of us have between dozens to hundreds of hours of Dead (thousands, even). Even somebody who has bought all the official releases to date has more hours of Dead than most people would consider necessary for most any band. To want more--maybe it is crazy. Maybe we'll all wake up one morning and think, "hey, I guess I DO have enough Dead--who needs more Vault releases? I think I'll start collecting blues records instead." This has to be Rhino/GDP's worst nightmare... On the other hand, parents/friends/lovers/spouses have been asking us this for decades--"don't you already have enough Dead?"--and it hasn't stopped us yet. So I guess this won't, either. (I have to add that, personally, I'm less bothered by the "sense of entitlement" folks than by all the people complaining about the "sense of entitlement." It's just a little too Rush Limbaugh for me...)

Most of you know that the Vault was moved to Burbank last year after Rhino took over responsibility for running the business side of the Grateful Dead. "The Dead all started individual endeavors," said Mr. Edwards of Rhino, "and they needed a partner to provide infrastructure." Part of the arrangement said: "Under the landmark license agreement, Rhino assumes the primary responsibility for the full range of Grateful Dead assets, recorded and otherwise, including the vast archive of unreleased live concert recordings, the band's official website (dead.net), all related direct-to-consumer and merchandise businesses, the growing variety of digital initiatives, and select band-related name and likeness licensing." That meant moving the vault. In August, the Marin Independent Journal reported on the transfer: "The musical legacy of the Grateful Dead - some 13,000 live audio and video recordings spanning the band's 30-year concert career - left Marin County in a temperature-controlled truck and is now being stored in a huge Warner Brothers Music vault in Southern California. The transfer of the priceless 'vault' recordings - from a Novato warehouse to a Fort Knox-like facility in Burbank - is a physical manifestation of a milestone deal that effectively dissolves Marin-based Grateful Dead Productions and turns over the Hall of Fame band's business operations to Rhino Entertainment, a subsidiary of giant Warner Music Group." Everyone on the previous 14 pages is right I was watching my legally purchased copy of the Closing of Winterland last night with the interview with David L. describing the work that went into that project and I wondered if he ever imagined he'd have this kind of fun There are periods in my life when the only music that satisfies my soul is the GOGD. This is one of those periods. Bring on more music I, personally, don't mind the stoppage of the downloads as it forces me to go back to listen to some stuff i haven't listened to in a while. I've had no trouble streaming on three different computers but can understand if some folks can't figure it out...I've been there. It is true that the suits who make these decisions just don't "get it" but have you ever known a time when the suits did "get it?" Why would they let people who don't "get it" have control of the vault? It's all about the music smile smile smile Why don't they serve us breakfast on Monday mornings? A free, downloadable coupon for breakfast at the nearest (insert breakfast spot here) would be a good idea. Don't you hate long posts? Have a grateful weekend.

This was the sort of reaction I had hoped we would get here. I like the Dead Show on KOPN at http://deadshow.blogspot.com/ and I posted a comment at https://www.blogger.com/ comment.g?blogID=7847493&postID=4981664890143991159 lethedoom said... Welcome back Professor and good luck with your healing and physical therapy. I noticed that this Dead Show file is about half the usual size and at 96kbps instead of the 128kbps of former posts. There has been bitter reaction to the recent changes at the DeadNet Tapers Section and Grateful Dead Hour posts, in part because not even a rudimentary explanation of why access to the music had been downgraded was offered. I hope you will restore the 128kbps quality or at least tell us why you downgraded the posting quality next week. Thank you for all of the wonderful music you have shared with us and archived. 11:12 AM the professor said... My bad. my main production computer crashed just before I got sick. i believe most of us are somewhat over the shock of losing the downloads with no warning or an honest explanation. also i do believe we have the right to complain because we did not start the problem. there are reasonable and unreasonable ways to complain. most of us went through this same fiasco with live archive. when the same thing happened. its not always that it happened its also how it happened. very sudden with no warning. thats rude. other band do offer free downloads like king crimson. the dead never offered free downloads on there web site until the tapers section was created. so there are successful bands that share free music with their fans and it promotes their product. free music does not cut into a big profit for the band. like i said free music is promotional we still buy the commercial products.

Although it is rather conterintuitive that the Dead would offer free downloads for months but not expect that people would take advantage of that offer,we must remember that we are not entitled to anything. We then should not complain that the downloads were removed. The Dead charged an addmittance fee to the concerts, and sold their recordings. They were always a for-profit corporation and continue to be. The lack of downloading ability is inconvenient, but recording a stream is very possible. Personally,I do it by taking the output from my computor that goes to the speakers and patch it to a Teac RW 800 digital recorder. I can record any audio that streams (including Archive soundboards). There are other means as well, check out Streamripper. Enough of the complaining. We have no inherent right to free downloads, but it was nice while it lasted. Don't let them get you down, just record the stream.

I've enjoyed the community this past several weeks with all that's transpired here (ok, transpiring here).I have a very specific comment about this weeks music. WHAT, NO CRYPTICAL!!!! I'll agree that the 1985 versions were a bit hit and miss, but come on. Classic Garcia resurrected after almost 13 years; and then only six finally played in 1985. David Gans, My point was in response to the person before me who said "GOODBYE DEAD.NET Hello Channel 32 & audacity! It was fun while it lasted but filters and blocks only push people away. Later Rhino.." I was attempting to put some humor into what I saw expressed in this earlier post as a simple black and white view of Rhino. I was pointing out the complexity and interconnections of the world. I was not making a judgment call towards either Rhino or Sirius or you or David Lemieux. I think you both do great work. By the way, I was just reading “The Grateful Dead and Philosophy" and in the second essay "Community at the Edge of Chaos" there were two quotes from you that struck me in regards to the exaggerated response that has occurred at this site. 1. "there was "very little unanimity on any subject in the band, the organization, or the Deadhead community"". 2. "Community is not about agreement, it's about acceptance and diversity". Good reminders at this time. Peace. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

DG:You should know better than anyone that Deadheads don't like dishonesty and condescension. When a deal was struck with Sirius, the community would have understood if it was clear that the content we were all getting for free would now be on Channel 32. But unless David L was legally forced to do so, it is BEYOND INSULTING to issue a statement about it coming to the attention of the GD that people were downloading mp3s. And as for your comment about "8 GB isn't enough," that's pretty rough for a guy whose entire career, journalistic and musical, has been based on being a band confidant. The reason people responded so favorably to David L and this section was the lack of trust after the archive.org debacle. We felt like finally "one of us" was sharing the true gems as Dick tried to. One thing people don't like is being treated like fools. Throughout this episode, that is what what has happened. We have all enjoyed your books, PITB and Conversations and are extremely grateful for the GD Hour, especially when it was playing sbds that would not have otherwise been heard. But to act like people weren't taping those back then is as foolish as not expecting people to download mp3s. We all know digital content is a slippery subject, and the the organization, especially Bobby, is having trouble figuring out how to proceed. But let's not treat the very fanbase that has kept this all going as whiners or selfish complainers.

Please don't take my comments as some form of attack. Both Davids have always answered my emails about questions about vault recordings. But as I listen to the 11/2/79 show which David G just introduced on Sirius, I am struck by the lyrics "it's an obsession but it's pleasing." In that spirit, don't play the community that has bought every single piece of released music by the band for saps.
