    Jim-curiously I had exactly the experience you are describing when I saw the Dead in London 10/3/81. Unexpectedly, someone in the crowd I had never seen before offered me a dose just before the first set. We pass this way but once...
    And Stranger kicked off the second set.

    Had a nice listen today. I like the song selection and the performance.

    Funny.. as I was working and listening and the Feel Like a Stranger kicked off the second set, I had this thought about Stranger as a second set opener.. when the lights go down and the second set starts.. if you dosed, that's when it really starts kicking in and what a great song this is when that moment overtakes you.

    I wondered how many people in the crowd had that feeling that night. ... then I read pretty much the same situation in Sam's recount of the show. You Know It's Gonna Get Stranger, So Let's Get on with the Show....

    UNKLE SAM - Great story! I'm impressed with the details you recall. Did you take notes on that one? Curious if you're able to conjure all those memories or if you documented some of them to help keep them so fresh and vivid. So far you're spot on. That Jack Straw, Peggy-O are signaling a fun time ahead. Thanks for sharing man, I really enjoyed reading that. And Jerry just rips right in to his Rooster solo :)

    This show is sounding sweet today. I really like the next 2 nights too and am thinking I need to re-visit 11/26 as well.

    OB: I’d love to see if it’s possible to release 11/19, 22, 24, they’re all worthy, don’t think 11/26 is in Vault. That being said they all suffer from some unfortunate reel flips and not a lot, if any, patch options. Based on what has already been released I don’t see much happening on this front. But… the 3 shows mentioned are must haves for any worthy GD collection. And the boots we’ve got are good.

    I need to go back and do all of October ’72 to really give an opinion on that month. 10/18 in particular is on my re-listen list. So.. basically blah blah blah, I love November ’72!

    One show from this time period I’d really like to see released is 9/16/72 and I know it’s on Dave’s radar. The PITB is one of my all time faves and the Dark Star > Brokedown is essential listening. Great great show.

    Wowsa, forgot how hot DPs 3 is! Not always a big 77 guy but this one and the Swing always hit me like Britney!
    I’m sure I’m in the minority, but sometimes I kinda like the chopped Dicks (ooooopps, stepped in it that time lol)
    Honestly, as the years continue I’m increasingly editing my picks down to the more meat & pertators. I guess it’s preferable to have the whole show and then edit to taste? But I don’t mind them so much as long as they are in order or keep the show flow somewhat. I never liked the cut ups ala burrows versions with only certain songs from different nights in weird trac orders...but yeah, I need to hear some of that again! Great Pick!

    11/28/80 sounds good! I’ve been lingering on DaP 8 to compare that matrix with the newDaves after all the hoopla about it. It does sound good but so far I think 8 is a tad too dry while 36 is a tad too wet. But that’s me as I prefer a good matrix! So since I’m in that zone, and I haven’t spent much time with 11/28, hell I’ve still not listened to probably half of boxilla, Doooaaahh! So,
    Onward!

    Hey now everyone, as requested, here is a rundown on the 11-28-80 Lakeland Civic Center show.
    It was a Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the boys had just done a show down in Pembroke Pines that we did not travel to, but we heard it was a scorcher. Having had Thrusday off for Thanksgiving I nor any of our party had to work that day and we left around noon for the hour and a half drive to the Center. We were looking forward to this show as we had traveled up to Atlanta back in April of this year to see the boys at the Fox Theatre, but that's another story.
    It was a beautiful day, about 75 and sunny with a few clouds and a bit of a breeze. The traffic was constant but not heavy on the way west to Lakeland from Orlando.
    My parents at the time lived in Lakeland and I knew the town pretty good so we slid into the Center from the back way down 33 off of I-4, which was a great way to get to the Civic Center, knida like the back door.
    As we arrived we could see that it was not too crowded, there were heads here and there throwing frisbees and listening to music, but all in all for the early afternoon, not to crowded, yet. It did fill up later on but we liked to get to shows early so we could get good seats, and we had fine seats up off the floor on Jerry's side about half way back. I always brought my binoculars with us so we could get some good looks at the boys and the equipment.
    Of course we came loaded for bear and had the usual paraphernalia with us, some good smoke, a wine sack full of sangria and tequila mixed the way the Spanish did it and of course some doses, Purple or Red dragons, can't remember the color now, but they were good.
    As we enter the Arena about 6 or so we walked right in which was a bit strange because Lakeland had become the place where there was always a big heat presence at shows, especially Grateful Dead shows and when we didn't see but a couple cops, we were relieved and walked right in, no pat down or searches. {Turns out they were all inside dressed like heads, undercover).
    The lights went down and we dropped the doses and they opened with Jack Straw which during the line we can share the women we can share the wine we broke out the wine sack that my buddy had smuggled into the place under his arm and slung over his shoulder and cover by his jean jacket. Sangria and tequila is quite a potent mix but it is also quite sweet, so down it went in no time. After Jack Straw came just one of the best Peggy-O's ever, Jerry's voice was pure butter and his playing was top notch. Then into little red rooster where Bobby again fucked up his slide work and it took Jerry stepping in to help out to finish the song. Jerry could play some slide, unlike Bobby, who kind of just raked it over the strings. Then Tennessee Jed, which the crowd got into, most of them being from the south and they could relate to this song, once again Jerry in fine form, punching out the vocals with great pronunciation. A good Jed for sure. A killer Passenger followed, with Phil just up and down the neck like he was playing a lead guitar, awesome. Then came Deep Elem Blues, a favorite of mine and done electrically, which was rare and quite good, Bobby in good form for this one and the next one which was Looks Like Rain, again done very well and the set ends with a smoking Deal, with Jerry tearing it up, a big star beside that one and a great set ender like it always was.
    By this time the doses had taken hold and we were wasted, laid back in our seats and just toe tapping and smiling, good times for sure, the lights came up and we headed to the drink line and I went to the long bathroom line, standing there tripping was to say the least, weird, a lot of folks were off too, but some were screaming for doses and looked like they weren't having such a good time, I shied away from the rabble rousers and did what I came for and walked among the heads during intermission. That was fun, found a cool tee shirt that had a skull smoking a joint and "on the road again" under the skull, a cool shirt with the only color being the red dot on the end of the joint.
    Back to my seat and the light went down and Jerry starts with this killer wah wah that leads into Feel like a Stranger, an excellent version, check it out if you have a copy of the show from the 30 trips box, it is trippy and different and very cool. The song ends the crowd goes crazy and then Jerry starts off To Lay me Down and the crown goes quiet, you could hear a pin drop as Jerry pours out his heart and soul into the song and his guitar work is out of this world. An awesome version of another tune that they had not done for quite a while. After that deafening applause comes Let it Grow into a fantastic Terrapin Station, wow, just...wow. The song continues into Drums and Mickey and Billy tear it up, lots of folks get up and head out but I loved the drums>space part of the show and I sat there mesmerized as the beast with 8 arms rears it head and performs it magic. The space is short but it goes into Not Fade away with Brent holding down the keys with some sustain and with that the tune slow forms and then burst out on us like an exploding sun, "I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be....." everyone's up and rocking now. A beautiful Black Peter follows and once again Jerry's voice is like butter, loved this year with Jerry being on so many times. Sugar Magnolia takes us home with a U.S. Blues encore to send us out dancing. A great show and the exit was fun as the moo's coming from the crowd as we piled out making me laugh hard. Still tripping we sat in the parking lot smoking joints until we thought we could drive, and we did, all the way back to Orlando with three mile smiles on our faces.

    I'm hip to some 1980 Dead, another trip back to Florida sounds fun.

    That Slipknot! on 5/22/77 just kills me. So good, it's imprinted on my psyche. And hearing the "Inspiration" just come shining out of the fog, that's the stuff.

    DV - I'd love some rereleases of the incomplete shows, but I think that type of reengineering effort is not top of mind. Rather we continue to go Further!

    As a want to be archivist, I really appreciate Dave's approach of not releasing stuff unless they can do it right, which wouldn't of been possible without Dick's trailblazing efforts to begin releasing this material in the first place. Alas the 5/22/77 release was a gear in the cog to get where we are now. The new transfer has the reel flip in Eyes patched now. Aww.. the Dead Head freak nature of obsessing about minutia, I scoffed at it once and now it's a part of me.

    Also, that Pink Floyd Dark Side doc was great! Thanks for the tip, I enjoyed that.

    Feels like you'd have to kick it off with 11/30 for sure. Maybe I can get catch a ride and get some tickets at the shows? Boston could be Sold Out though from the looks of things... hmmm.

    Ever heard the 11/28/73 Jerry & Mickey dated material from the Palace of Fine Arts? I was just looking at December '73 run and noticed it. Seastones performances with Phil & Ned, I might have to listen to that again. I think it circulates with Tarot outtakes. Some weird shit.

    Okay now I'm ramblin'...
    Lil surprised that the location I was looking for today on 30 DOTD wasn't listed. How can be?

    Don't want to give away anything, but that should be corrected, but not if it means I got it wrong cause I chose the only other option. If you haven't given the track a spin, do! It's a freakin' epic version and it was off my radar.

    Good stuff.

    The full show is tight. This is another 77 barn burner. This Miller transfer sounds fantastic. That second set is something. That Estimated-Eyes-Wharf Rat-Terrapn minus the lady with a Fan, into Morning Dew is crazy good. Thanks for the pick GOGD!

    Here is an idea for Rhino, go back and release this full epic show and other chop jobs. Call it Dick's reloaded, put out 10,000 copies. People would eat it up.....

    So great Oroborous, is there a better release than Dark Side, not too many.

    Frampton Comes Alive. I still play this and within the last ten years picked up a DVD Audio copy. And it sounds unbelievably good in Multi Channel. And you get Bill G!

    It is good to keep this great music rolling!

    Just spent 2 days painting the living room (including sanding and wiping down the walls for prep).
    Tomorrow will shampoo the carpet (rake leaves while the carpet dries), then hang TV on wall (drilled the mount holes before painting), move the furniture back in, and reconnect CD/stereo and BluRay/theater systems.

    I hooked up the stereo in an adjacent room for tunes while working.
    On Thanksgiving I moved a bunch of shows from a torrent HD to a music player (shows I haven’t heard and upgrades of shows I know and love).

Anthem of the Sun, Workingman's Dead, blues music, great bbq, and lots of ice cold beer, the world is always a better place.

To achieve a peace accord the psychedelics would have to be required, and more than 30 minutes of music would probably be needed. But each country could throw out 10 minutes of music (as part of Set 1), then the GD Nation would get Set 2 for 60 min.
I would end it with 5-8-77 Morning Dew.
Somewhere before that a China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider would also be needed. Probably one from E72 since European dignitaries would be present.

If we dosed them.. 2.14.68 or Live Dead? After 30 min they will either beg for more or politely ask for a straight jacket and a padded room, the exception might be Kim Jong Un, who will likely ask for a pack of smokes and access to some good American porn.

Although a mind-bending Dark Star sounds good to the experienced, I think it would only take one freak out and nukes would start flying.
Better to ease it in.

So,
start off with Peggy-O (Jim’s choice).

Followed up with a smokin’ China->Rider. Although I previously said a 72, I’m thinking that the situation calls for a 74 with the extra jammy transition.
Now the dignitaries are all up and dancing, with big grins that they can’t wipe off their face.

Time for some grease!
Good Lovin’ or Lovelight with Pigpen on full display.
Now the dignitaries are all happy and hugging.

Follow up with Help/Slip/Franklin’s.
Putin is twirling so fast the sweat is flying off his bare chest.

Now bring them back to earth with Morning Dew.

Who knew that achieving world peace could be so easy. It just takes the Good Ole Grateful Dead and some psychedelics.

Almost as soon as I made this post last night.. a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville appeared and parked in front of my house. It really stands out in my neighborhood and people have begun to take notice. It came with an immaculately dressed, elderly Korean man wearing a top hat of all things. License plate reads ODDJOB.

Weird. He gets wigged out easily, got really pissed when I called him Random Task for example.

One caution regarding an incendiary Morning Dew. The song is about nuclear fallout that kills all of humanity. Might save that until after disarmament. Has anyone out there seen the 1959 movie On The Beach which? It inspired the young Ms. Dobson to write the song. A pretty cool flick and it gives you some insight to what inspired the lyrics. Her original version has some haunting vocals that provide, in a sense, some of the same emotional content and feelings of hopeless despair that Jerry brings in his voice and guitar.

Edit: More accurately stated, Jerry brought some of the same emotional content via guitar and vocals as the haunting vocals on Bonnie Dobson original recording. Both send chills up my spine.

My favorite is still 12/31/76 - NYE Cow Palace. We were there with several college friends, mostly non-heads. The whole night was full of synchronicity for us - almost magical. More on that another time.

During MD, everyone around us was completely silent, just soaking it all in. A girl with our group whom I didn't know turned to me at the end of the song, tears streaming down her face. She didn't understand why she was crying and asked me what the song was about. When I told her, she put her head on my shoulder and just sobbed. Looking around the folks near us, she wasn't the only one moved to tears. Powerful performance - stunning, really.

I'm pretty sure I discussed this on these threads.. but I had an airplane seat next to Mr. Kissinger 15 or 18 years ago, give or take. What a trip that was... Franken nailed it. The voice.. classic. And an avid taper. Dammit Henry, give me that tape, I'm gonna erase it right now.....

@WTJ as far as I can tell, May 1982 hasn't come up.
I thought the greek shows had been discussed, but.. if so I didn't write it down, I guess.
5/21/82 looks fun.

5/11/72 - still working through this puppy. Fun stuff. Pigpen's organ on Good Lovin' is super tasty. Pig must've been feeling pretty good this night, 7 tunes and some nice organ playing.

5/11/77 - Shiz, been diggin' May '77 since the 5/8 anniversary. But I missed this yesterday.. so, gonna try and remedy that. BTW really great liner notes in that May 77 2013 box set. Steve Silberman & Blair's takes on stuff, especially jaded Heads, will give you a chuckle, highly recommended.

And @JiminMD I forgot about that Kissinger story, classic. Ted Koppel tells the funniest Kissinger story I've ever heard to Johnny Carson in his final month hosting the Tonight Show. Makes me laugh out loud every time I've seen it. I can't do it justice, but let's just say Ted Koppel had a great sense of humor.

Good stuff all.

Pretty sure she has memorized the transition to UJB so much so that she can sing it. Overall she is also an undervalued writer and dead denizen, as many props as she gets here. Hope ya had fun today all. I know I did! :-) Not too shabby for a Wed.

Yeah, that 5/21 show is sweet, nice call!
I kinda want to listen to the whole run now.
But I think I like this first night the best, so nice and spacey.

And the MaryE connection puts it over the top!

+1 on props to MaryE.
Mary's interview with Robert Hunter is amazing.
Highly recommended.

Alright, gonna listen to parts of 5/11/72 again.. cause it's just that good.

The one that blew us all away in the day. I had an embarrassingly hissy cassette that I thought sounded great and loved labeled "Make Believe Ballroom." One From the Vault floored me when it hit the streets.. was that 1993? Or earlier? What an upgrade. I love the Bill Graham intro, which I believe might have been truncated either on the old cassette I used to have or on the release.. or maybe I've got this confused with another B. G. Intro. After a while it all rolls into one. I seem to recall they truncated this on the official release, but I might be wrong.

So a rocker and a classic... well, it's Friday.

"Good evening.. we welcome you. On behalf of the group..." I hope Bill is looking down and laughing at us right now.. I do miss him, what a great promoter.

Jim, if you can believe it was 91, 30 years ago. I still have my original copy and two years ago I picked up a remastered version they released in 2007 and it was a big upgrade in sound quality. Let me know if you don't have the 2007 release.

Ah, One from the Vault. My roommate had that back in the day. I got Two. Never managed to pick up my own copy of One. Used to love that. That period was so mellow and sublime. Easin' back into it. I'd have to go plug in to my external drives to see which things I DO have, but it's a lovely breezy Saturday afternoon, and I don't feel like sitting at my desk.

This is goin' back back back, way back in the pick list, but I just noticed that the top page says Dave's Picks 38 "Now Available", but you click and it's sold out, as otherwise expected. Any guesses why don't they offer a download edition?

As much as people say Day Job was hated, I was just listening to 4/13/84 (still!) the other day and the audience is totally singing along joyfully with the refrain.

Way way back in the day, in August 1982 to be (somewhat) exact, following the Alpine shows, I got an audience snippet of a show that to this day blows all (my) doors off. St Louis Arena, 5/15/77 --- St. Stephen > Iko > Not Fade Away > Sugar Magnolia. First Iko!! into ripping NFA. Love this Set II closing sequence, love it love it to this day. Years later discover that it was taped by Steve Maizner. Thank you Steve.

I'm a big fan of the transportive audience, the one that places you "there". For naive me, this was the real deal and still is. To quote Ken Nordine in Eugene '93 - you are the cinematographer. First yelps and yells and shouts of joy on recognition of Stephen. Bob and Donna on the Daydream climax. My freaking God.

Of course - we've all (hopefully) got the May '77 board to listen to.

Spun 5/11 St Paul - another great May '77 show out of the Midwest. A favorite Scarlet > Fire. Currently Disc 2 of Daves 16 Springfield in the ride. Sounds divine. Plus Buffalo 5/9, good god Help opener (GOAT?) and comes A Time, though 5/8 still is the desert Island for me of the 2 if I got to choose. And back in the old times (last month), the whole Fillmore East April '71 run, plus Bill Graham's (Ratners??) ramble-on interview (which I loved). All that a first for me. For all the years I've seen that set list with the Beach Boys, hearing that show for the first time was something else. Pluses and minuses - ultimately a tough trade off I think.

Another bit of personal history. The friend who scored me the ticket to my first show (2/3/78) was from St. Louis and his older brother, who actually bought the 2/3 tickets, was a long time head who was at 5/15 and I think a whole f*ck ton of other St Louis shows going back who knows how many years. So yeah this show got me in the door in some fashion and made me who I am today :) That plus another visit to the Henry Mountains. Plus some Odell Sippin' Pretty.

not to belabor a point but 5/15 is an off the hook show. been to the well time and time and time again the past 2 days (I've got my reasons) - Maizner audience, Sir Mick Matrix, Jay Ashley Bertha SBD remaster, HDCD discs from the first round of May shows. yeah I'm sort of obsessed. All excellent and bringing their own flavor. But if anyone is so inclined to go the audience route, put on the Sennheisers (or whatever you got) and listen to the Maizner pull on the Set II closer of St Stephen > Iko > Not Fade Away > Sugar Magnolia. Real deal, pure gold - trust me. And probably stick around for that Uncle Johns encore too :)

That show is impeccably tight. The one issue I have if there is one is they forgot to finish off the St.Stephen.

started it the other day

disc three...I arrived at work after the lead section of PITB. The jam awaits after work...

As soon as I finish this 6/8/92.
Show popped up on GDHour today, and Gans said his pal Charlie Miller mentioned that he thought this was possibly the best show of 1992.
Couldn't pass up that kinda feedback from those two bros and had to give it the once over.
the jam out of Crazy Fingers sure has some nice sparkle.
Not too shabby dabby do if I do say so myself.

Alright, onward.

PS - Missed 5/18/72 yesterday, but gonna try and fit that in somewhere too. It's a good problem to have :)

Took a crack at this show Jim. I wasn't able to find a decent version through Relisten.

Decided to go with 4/2/90 today from the Omni. Check it out if have not in a while.

Would love to have some information on that box leak.

I think there is an audience patch for the first minute or so then it settled into a nice sounding board.

4/10/83 ✔️ Soundboard, shmoundboard, I listened to a good aud and dug it. Show has good energy and was a nice change up, haven’t done any 83 in a while, but been drawn there lately. Did 4/13/83 too. ✔️ Went with a decent HS matrix, but I enjoyed the show and the aud from 4/10 better.
Hit up 9/2/83 ✔️ the other day. Another good show that suffers from the recording...
Might go with more of this tour? Was at 4/12 & 15 on the rail both nights, big history with 4/12.
Have/have had parts of the meadowlands shows, so not sure where I’ll go?
