One week during my initial stint with the Dead, Dick was spending a lot of time listening to 9/8/73, and he could not stop raving about it. He was very intent on pointing out that despite the absence of the 'Big Two' from 1973, every song, every solo, every moment was out-of-this-world excellent. He played me the first set, giving a play-by-play of each song and what made it special. In those listening sessions, Dick taught me a lot about how to listen critically and objectively. Of course, the subjective self always creeps in, those moments when you whoop and holler at how good a performance is, but that objective listening is critical. After many days of listening, Dick moved to other eras, as was his wont, since he carried the responsibility of selecting the best Dead shows from all eras to represent the Dead’s recorded legacy. But he made it clear and inarguable that he felt 9/8/73 was one of the best-played shows from one of the Dead’s best years." - David Lemieux

Despite the gloriously blustering artwork above, the forecast for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 38: NASSAU VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM, UNIONDALE, NY, 9/8/73 is blazing hot! With a double endorsement from archivists Dick Latvala and David Lemieux, you know it's a MUST HAVE. This one's got inspired playing from start to finish, with soon-to-be-minted Wake Of The Flood classics, a first-ever "Weather Report Suite," Keith polishing his chops on "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away," Jerry tapping into era-defining sound with his Wolf guitar, and we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Bob's exquisite playing too.

PF - I’d say 107 degrees is pretty intense heat, and in a state like Washington, with old growth forests, dangerous. My son lives just north in BC, and he and his lady and friends do a lot of camping, but he says the heat warnings have come with no fire restrictions.

Oro, Angry Jack - Sorry to cut you guys off of the 2021 Mike Christmas card list, the ultimate must be on list of the festive season, but this Hab devotion (shaking head in disbelief), I don’t get it. I’m not crazy about the Lightning, necessarily, but Go Bolts Go!

Edit - QMS was one band I just never “got”. Never did a thing for me. That said, Happy Trails is one of the coolest album covers, like It’s A Beautiful Day’s first album (which I did like a lot!)

wow, what an album, one of the best. How could they make this any better? The sound is fantastic, the art work is awesome and I don't think they will be able to add anything to what is all ready there. How could they make it any better?
Concert prices? seen most if not all the bands that I could or would want to see. Saw them at reasonable prices too, not this rip off they call prices now. D & C? no way for that money, and as someone said, no Jerry? why bother
Agree with another poster, Roger Waters has always been a great show, went to the last tour just before covid and it was great, not as good as the Pros and Cons tour, or the In the Flesh tour, or the DSOTM tour or any of the other times I have seen him. The band changes and some of the earlier bands had great musicians performing classic Pink Floyd tunes. The last time, mostly nothing from before DSOTM except "One of these Days" from Meddel. Nothing from any of the pre Dark side lps.
That distinction I have heard and read has gone to Nick Mason, who's band is presenting the early Floyd that I love and I wish he would come across the pond again and do a few more shows here in the colonies.
I will be going to see Live Dead again in August of this year, in a small venue with cheap (25 - 50$) tickets. Still with Mark Karan and Tom Constantine. They were great just before Covid and the talk is they are even better now.
As still another poster commented, no way I will EVER pay what these people want for live seats. Too bad, as a veteran of over 300 different rock shows and concerts, I enjoyed every one in one way or another, even the ones I was too wasted to remember.

Looked at one way, a lot of record companies/ticket sellers/bands - whoever is involved - may be trying to make one last buck with all the anniversary editions, box sets and tours where a band play ancient music. Some 60s-70s
albums have been re-released an absurd amount of times in different formats. I've bought and been to see the ones I liked.
Mention of "Happy Trails" - now there's one that seemed to escape the 50th Anniversary treatment that I would have been interested in. Curious how "Live Dead" wasn't given the treatment, too, come to think of it.

    Ticket Prices and Progressive Pricing

MLB decided during spring training this year, to start progressive pricing, for on sold tickets and to events with a higher demand....
My wife works for an MLB team. I get tickets through her and the beginning of the season for games I know, I can attend. Yankees were back in town and they had a couple of bleachers seats available. Heck its a sunny afternoon its a sunny spring afternoon. Tickets run about $25.00 for premium seating. However, for the Yankees, it was $70.00 to seat in the bleachers.
I was told it was because the demand was so high and being that scalpers had blocks of season tixs for sale. The league has decided to bring their prices to meet the demand. If they build it and you want to go. They figure you'll pay for it. You might save a couple of $$$, by not buying from a scalper.
Was going to see Yankees vs The Rays, in Tampa. I found seats by the right field foul pole, field level about 40 rows back. They want $220 a piece, for tixs...This was done through the Rays, MLB website. A weekend or two ago, Baltimore was in town vs the Rays. I found a pair of tickets 18 rows behind home plate for $98.00 a piece.
Lets also not forget, the corporate ads, you see on uniforms now. Can't wait to see, a Mass Mutual ad, on Yankee pinstripes.
Wife does not work for an American league team, sadly

You have to remember ticket prices started to climb as artists were having their albums downloaded for free, and almost bankrupted a big portion of the music business. So the artists looked around and thought, didnt GD's business model have touring as it core. So artisits started jacking up prices to get what they lost in cd sales. But with Roger Waters or the Stones, these are primarily legacy bands that a lot of people want to see as they are still very entertaining artists. I agree, the current model of selling tickets to professional scalpers, uh hum, ticket agencies really needs to stop.

I wrote I just saw TTB recently. I was at the box office at 10 am when they went on sale. The old fashion way is still the best way. Why? Most people don't do that any more.

As far as sports and cable, I too have put an expiration date on it, unless I can find the right niche package just for me. The networks know that people have tired of having to pay professional player salaries, even when they don't watch them. But competition is great, and their is access to entertainment than ever. New movie studios opening with Netflix and Amazon creating a lot of content. And from that an explosion of great story telling, depending on what you want to watch. I think I may get disney for 2 months to stream the mandelorian, as a friend said it was worth watching. Great thing about the future is you can jump in and out of stuff.

I also watch rabbit ear tv, as that is now 20 local channels. Never happen, but if espn was ever broadcasted over ABC's OTA, man that would make life a lot easier, but cant do targeted advertising and data tracking. "Relax, it's not going to hurt."

St. Helena's a real nice town: a little chi chi for the likes of me, but worth wandering around in downtown for a while. And of course there's lots (and lots) (and lots) or wine tasting in that area.

If you can't stay in St. Helena, it shouldn't be too hard to find a room in Santa Rosa. If you're interested in visiting breweries, then you MUST check out Russian River. Their beer is legend, and their original brew pub is in downtown Santa Rosa. It's cool place to visit, and the pizza's good. They have a new brewing facility just down the road in Windsor, which I've not visited yet, but I know it also has a pub. Lots of other good breweries in the area: Lagunitas in Petaluma, Bear Republic in Healdsburg, probably lots of other newer ones I don't know about, too. Santa Rosa has some great book stores, and the Last Record Store, which is a good place to shop for vinyl, if you're into that.
It's not too much of a drive to get out to Pt Reyes National Seashore, if you to do the nature thing. You could hit Limantour Beach, eat lunch at the Station House in Pt Reyes (I recommend the fish tacos), hit Pt Reyes Books, be back in St. Helena for dinner.

Proudfoot - I was only goofing on my last name. It’s actually only 5 letters, of Irish derivation, but amazing how often it gets misspelled or mispronounced, so I went with Dave Watson, because I knew he’d like the autograph, and it’s an easy name to spell.

Burnsy - Glad to hear you are getting pumped for the Kraken! I’m trying to get Proudfoot hooked on Kraken, too! You are very right about the Seattle Metropolitans winning the Stanley Cup, but I didn’t know about the Spanish Flu putting an end to them, that’s really interesting,. Also kind of weird how we are 100 years later, battling the Kung Flu, and here Seattle hockey rises from the ashes… (cue: music)

Mr Ones: You sold me on The Third Mind, too! I had purchased stuff from their company before - Yep Rock - so I’ll likely order from them, or Bezos if I have other stuff to get. Played them on YouTube (loved the Fred Neil tune), and you weren’t kidding - really spacey stuff, but great jams that go places, not just meander. Thanks for the recommend!

Mike, that's actually not me on Amazon recommending The Third Mind. I got my copy from the local record emporium. And for the record, I am a Capitals fan, so I have 47 years of sucking/choking/repeated disappointments Etc.(plus one Cup!!)
I was in the music selling business for 22 years, mostly retail, but also mail order and wholesale. I got to meet dozens of musicians, most of whom were truly nice and down to earth. The absolute most humble and easiest to talk to were Steve Miller, Al Green, Alice Cooper and Peter Gabriel.
The biggest dick(and if you read his book, you'll understand) was John Fogerty. I truly love his music, but he was the whole ass.

Mr Ones - That’s cool you got to meet all those musicians, and even better that they were good dudes. I’m not surprised about what you say about John Fogerty - I read his book, and thought this guy has a major ego issue, then I saw him on a solo tour, and he is laying into Jerry and the Dead like they were a bunch of out of it weirdos, which I thought at the time really blew. Who gets on stage and does that!? A-hole.

As for the Caps, I went to see them the play their first season, 1975(?) when they won like 12 games or something, so bad they made the Leafs look like giants. The upside? They are way better now, and always in the mix. Just a bit of a choke come playoffs, but a hard team to take down.

At The R'nR HOF Dinner for CCR's induction, Fogerty told the Foudation he wouldn't accept the award or perform if other band members were involved, which of course included HIS OWN BROTHER!!! They had to sit like idiots in the crowd as he went and accepted and then did a medley of CCR with other musicians, Springsteen included...Screw him, Screw the Foundation for caving in...and screw Springsteen and all the othe musicians who helped this slimeball behavior...And so Stu Cook and Doug Clifford had to sit there and eat it in front of the industry...

Oops ...edit job...Stu & Doug did go onstage for the award but were not allowed onstage for the Musical performance...Tom had passed away a couple of years earlier and the Brothers were on bad terms when he passed...

Grateful Dead chatter! (instead of hockey talk) :)

The past four months I made my first "serious" foray through the two Spring '90 boxes. I had dabbled before, but had never done the complete shows in order. I gave myself tons of time, knowing that there was no way I could do the tour on its anniversary dates. I heard some playing that really excited me, but was surprised at how much of the best material had been released before the boxes came out. March 15th and 24th were already out there, as was the Scarlet-->Fire from 3/22, as well as the most interesting songs from the 25th and 26th. And the Branford material had been available in high-quality bootleg formats forever.

What I'll likely do is make some compilations (gasp!) of the best of the rest, as I cannot imagine that I'll listen to every moment of that tour again. The first show (3/14) is a burner, and will be cranked in totality again, but I'll probably make some "shows" culled from many shows' highlights.

And I'm officially done with "Victim". I'm hitting 'Skip' on that one for the rest of my listening years . . . :-O

Listening to this one today for the anniversary. Pretty good soundboard. I've never listened to the whole thing, only the Dark Star and Bird Song. I've decided I can't wait any longer for them to release this. I usually try to wait for the big shows to be officially released so that I can hear them for the first time with the "Full Norman" treatment.

I'm officially (finally) annoyed with the website. I decided what the heck, I'll submit my story of when I got on the bus for that Deadcast promotion they have going. It says you can write up to 250 words, but it stops letting you type in the box after 250 letters. The irony is that I considered submitting my story a couple of times and said nah, don't feel like it. So I finally gave it the thumbs up and typed 250 of the most interesting letters I could think of, and then kablam - no more typing allowed in the box.

Vguy good export / import joke - almost as good as the ahem...two religious leaders who get pulled over by the police.

Jimbo - you're 6'4"? That's some height I wish I had. I just figured everyone here was 5'9" like me.

Sixtus - happy birthday dude. You love June '76! Just wait until tomorrow's 6/11 show, which I assume is your favorite in the box.

Happy, happy, joy, joy to Sixtus, a Bday and 45 year favs anniversaries to boot!

6’4”, that’s pretty tall! I used to be 6’2” but now I’m closer to 6’....only good thing about being tall was on the floor at GA Dead shows etc!

FAMOUS FOLKS: have met several, have worked in several of their houses (never meet them only their peeps), off the top of what’s left of my head, I’d have to say Rick Danko was always a ridiculously nice guy! Had the pleasure to work with them in the mid nineties and he was always super nice and friendly!
Generally, I’ve found that celebs just like being treated like regular folk, their just people like the rest of you, of course I’m a dog, WOOF!

Go Isles! Sorry to our Mass brethren, just goofing round trying to have fun, no offense meant, though I still hate the Pats and Bs, always dug the Celts and Red Sox though... ; )

I can’t believe the AVS blew that game Tuesday. Now the Knights certainly played hard, and capitalized on opportunities, and they deserved to win, but the AVS coulda, shoulda won that game. Oh well, as Chris Bermen used to say “that’s why they play the game”...think it’s over now...don’t see the AVs going into the fortress and winning, the knights seem more juiced and the force there is just too strong! They needed to take care of business at home...at least it’s been an awesome series so far and the refs haven’t muffed it too much. Well good luck Vguy, it should be another beauty eh!

Sorry to the non-hockey folks, it’ll be over fairly soon and it’s been a tradition here for years.

What exactly does a triple deflection exactly mean. Do we have three more spies (web builders) then we did yesterday? Is Hockey code for deflections from Russia, through Canada to eventually write shitty code and muck up our website? (edit: Oh, not a triple defection, triple deflection.. nevermind)

Actually I saw that play. It was exactly then that I realized I am doing the wrong drugs to even watch this sport. It's better suited for younger, coke or meth addicted fans. I was watching that play, by god.. and I completely missed the goal. It was only when they slowed down the replay that I was able to see what happened. And in all honesty.. It wasn't until the third replay, played.. eeexxxtrrraaaa sslllss.lllow that I saw what actually happened. Where I come from we call that blind luck aka dumb luck. I guess that's part of the sport. But hey, I hear they plan a lot of GD during games during intermissions. That's good enough for me.

Seriously.. great game, great triple deflection. Congrats VGuy.

Well done and congratulations. Down 0-2 in games and down in the third period of game three against the mighty Avs. Very impressive.

Before the playoffs started, I pledged my allegiance to Canadaland. However, as these events have unfolded, I cannot in good conscience go against your GKs.

As promised, attached is a picture of mom with Alex Tuch. She is (or was) roughly 5'6". He's a big dude.

Sir James. Hockey is a fast sport. Very fast. And the goalies are better than you think. It's not like soccer where the goals are 50 feet wide. It's tough to get the puck past them. That's why you are taught at a very early age to deflect the puck. Your chances of scoring are much better when the shot changes direction. Even more so when it changes three times.

I wonder what the 3 releases will be that Dave talked about? Obviously, one will be the box set, if the box set is tied to MUATM, it will probably be an 89, 90, or 91 box with a dvd, or hopefully an Oct 74 box with videos. The other two released, will probably be Bears Choice 50th and Wake of the Flood 50th. I just hope they release full shows for both these releases, a full 1970 & a full 1973 show for both releases.

I agree that Skullfuck 50th is one of the three releases and the box that we all assume is coming is another of the three. I doubt that Dave's Picks counts so the third could well be a stand alone single show release. That could be 3 CDs and a DVD/BR video. Whatever, bring 'em on! Ark ark.

Good suggestion. Been doing highlights of the box. Presently listening to 6/11/76 Eyes Of suggestion. Audio on these shows is top notch. The 6/10 Cassidy has some kick-ass drums in there somewhere, I forget which part.

Yeah Vguy, glad to hear the Knights are progressing. It gets harder to watch the longer they're in....

Man I hope the box set is in my wheelhouse.

Hope all are well. Always reading in chunks and really comment much. Question: How many use talk to text versus my old as typing on an IBM Selectric?

hope all is well, to answer quickly from 2 months back.

Yeah at Buckeye Lake I do actually think I remember you. I only remember a few tapers in front or on side in front of board, but 2 of them being me and then another friend several feet to the left.

Question: I few years ago I posted about to the name, and the person said there are 2 Oro's. Was that true at all or just one. It would be two if, you didnt post about making a ceramic oroborous and then giving that to Jerry when you met him at a restaurant near a show somewhere?

Was that you?
A psychedelic dream?
Speaking of which I recently dreamed I was sitting around talking to Gene Simmons about health insurance. It was a blurred but fiesty debate...

A week or two back someone posted about your dog eating its tail...obviously the name. Have not gone back to see actual post today. To me, it looks like the dog from "A Dog's Purpose." Cant remember the name though.

The other day I DL'ed an AUD of Folsom Field '80...nowadays I don't often grab AUD's unless it was something I was at...I wasn't at this show but what grabbed me was the 1st Set opener, an Uncle John's Band > Playin' In The Band >
Uncle John's Band sandwich that goes for 20 minutes...tasty start...And sometimes I just enjoy hearing a great AUD on my headphones, especially Ventura shows where I can hear the breeze and smell the ocean...
