Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses) 50th Anniversary Expanded Edition Digital

“For the Grateful Dead's second live album, released two years after its predecessor LIVE/DEAD, the band delivered an equally magnificent, but entirely different, Grateful Dead sound. Whereas LIVE/DEAD was a perfect sonic encapsulation of the band at the peak of their Primal Dead era, SKULL & ROSES captures the quintessential quintet, the original five piece band, playing some of their hardest hitting rock 'n' roll (‘Johnny B. Goode,’ ‘Not Fade Away’), showing off their authentic Bakersfield bona fides (‘Me & My Uncle,’ ‘Mama Tried,’ ‘Me & Bobby McGee’), and some originals that would be important parts of the Dead's live repertoire for the next 24 years (‘Bertha,’ ‘Playing In The Band,’ ‘Wharf Rat’). Of course, the Dead were never defined by one specific ‘sound’ and amongst the aforementioned genres and styles the band brought to this album, they also delved deeply into their psychedelic, primal playbook with an entire side dedicated to their 1968 masterpiece ‘The Other One.’ This is one of the most deeply rich and satisfying tracks preserved on an official Grateful Dead album, up there with LIVE/DEAD's ‘Dark Star’ and EUROPE '72's ‘Morning Dew.’ SKULL & ROSES sounds as fresh today as the first time I heard it in 1985, and as fresh as it was upon its spectacularly well-received release in 1971.” - David Lemieux

Not only did SKULL & ROSES serve up supremely fine tunes, it was also the one that scored the Grateful Dead their very first Gold record, introduced the world to the iconic skeleton babe Bertha, and asked the questions - Who are you? Where are you? How are you? - giving birth to the first official generation of Dead Heads.

DEAD FREAKS, old and new, get ready to reunite on June 25th with the release of GRATEFUL DEAD (SKULL & ROSES): EXPANDED EDITION. In celebration of the 50th anniversary, the 2CD set will feature the album’s original 11 tracks, newly remastered from the stereo analog master tapes by Grammy® Award winning engineer David Glasser using Plangent Process Speed Correction. We're topping it off with more than an hour of previously unreleased live recordings taken from the much-requested July 2, 1971 performance at the Fillmore West, the band’s final performance at the historic San Francisco venue. Standouts include the 17-minute Pigpen spectacular “Good Lovin’,” an achingly beautiful take on Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home,” and a spell-binding version of “The Other One” that rivals the one captured on the original Side 2.

Looking for something more byte-sized? The GRATEFUL DEAD (SKULL & ROSES): EXPANDED EDITION and the original edition will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at Dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now.

I went to soundtrax to get my digital download and the site is down. Is there another site I can go to for my download?

Ordered the hi-res download, received CD quality, sent a message to dead.net (similar message when a received a record with a visible and audible scratch), no response (similar to my message about the scratch I sent 5 months ago). Please fix your game.

dead.net merch op is a scam

To anyone who reads this post: Based on my past and current attempts to buy merchandise from this outfit- DO NOT BUY FROM DEAD.NET. 2-3 years ago I purchased some items for Xmas presents -in September - my card was charged and nothing showed up for months. After repeated calls to the helpline the person always stated that they did not know when my items will ship. Finally, in March of the following year I had to cancel the order.

In March of this year I bit the bullet and ordered some items from the Skull and Roses pre-order. My card was again charged at the time of order- 3 months ago. The order invoice states items will ship on 6/25. Here we are in July and NOTHING!!

The merch operation is a scam. To Billy, Bob, Mickey, and Phil, and bozo the clown running the dead.net march op- you all probably cashed your royalty payments before my stuff will ship.

Oh, and now I am getting trolling emails from dead.net asking me to buy more stuff from the 4th of July "sale"- Sale? really? More like "give us your money now and maybe, maybe you receive something"

I've read all the comments and see I'm not alone with my 16x44.1 FLAC files. I filed a ticket with customer support to help in showing this is wide spread. Initially I wasn't too concerned because this isn't the first time I had this problem with Dead.Net. But what really irks me is the total lack of response. They know they have a problem, acknowledge it and say you're working on it. But to not post anything on the website, no response to my support ticket, and to continue advertising 24x192. Really poor. Put something out there and don't leave us in the dark. Customer relations is not their strong suit.

I have not been able to play the FLAC in any form besides one song at a time, which would drive anyone nuts--and which I did not pay for.
I have kindly requested help from gratefuldead@gnarlywoodstore.com and I am ignored.
I even got the automatic reply for a ticket having been created (March 12th, 10:09 A.M.), but have heard nothing but crickets.
I'm sure they are busy, but this is ridiculous.
Anyone else have any of these problems?
Is this kind behavior? Is this what we elderly people used to call "Dead Etiquette"? I don't think so...

Just purchased and downloaded what was supposedly a FLAC high-res file (states 192/24 in description--Skull & Roses 50th Anniversary Ed.) and it is CD quality 44/16. I double checked to see if I downloaded ALAC by mistake and I did not. This is not what I paid $29.99 for.

I also downloaded the FLAC, which is supposed to be 192/24, and it is not. Same as the ALAC, which was half the price. This is unacceptable, since the FLAC cost twice the amount of the ALAC.

Bethy, it won't make the download hi res, but the best program to listen to FLAC files is VLC Media Player. It is free to download, and will play anything you throw at it.

Using VLC, under the Media tab, click open folder, once, and then OK. It will play the entire album, unfortunately not in 192/24, but in CD quality.

My FLAC download was also 44.1/16 instead of 192/24. I notified customer service and have no reason to believe they won't make good on the high-resolution version. My guess is there was a mix up when the emails went out.

Yes, you can convert an alac to a flac, but that won't change the quality. If it starts out at cd quality, it can't go beyond that.

Rhino does this with every release - sell you hi-res FLAC but send you 16/44.1.
Never fails.

I always go with the CD’s, so I don’t know if they eventually send the correct files.

Terrible business management and customer service. But it’s par for the course with Rhino.
It’s really a shame that the GD organization allows Rhino to treat the Deadheads so poorly.

Like everybody else I was excited to get hold of a hi-res 192/24 version of Skulls and Roses, and really unhappy to find that what was downloaded is 44/16 - I already have several versions at that resolution and don't need another as I'm not that interested in the expanded material. In the old days the GD Organisation always seemed to have excellent behaviour - where did the skilled people go - this is just as crap as most of the corporate world. How long before they fix it? If they don't how do I get a refund?

True but if you only want red book standard it's worth doing. Why the flacs cost $17 more is beyond me.

Having reported the issue regarding the FLAC download only being 44/16 quality not the advertised 192/24 hi-res files, I haven't heard anything back from customer support. Definitely burning up lots of goodwill.

Let me see what I can find out here. Sorry for the hassles.

I avoid the GTD.net purchases...the only thing I buy directly is my annual DaP subscription...all the 50th Anniversary stuff I've gotten through the "Rain Forest"...I live in a remote area with the closest music shop being 210 miles away and scorching heat right now...I get my stuff within a few days of the release date...as for the digital download i went to ProStudioMasters where the 192/24 bit download was available for $22.49...and I know it's 192/24 bit because the folder is 6.12 GB's in size...another thing that irked me was the fact the accompanying sticker was being sold for $8 PLUS $7.50 for S&H which brought it to $15.50 for a sticker...that's obscene...again I went to the rain Forest and got one for $3.50 there and since I'm a guide no S & H charges....sorry to say but it's a scam-ola site most of the time which is a sad commentary on the times we live in...

Problem with getting hold of hi-res download files still not resolved and have requested that my order be cancelled and my money refunded. The hi-res files do seem to be available at Qobuz and Pro Studio Masters .
