Alpine '88 cont.

I streamed rest of 6/20 - really really enjoyed it. Big fat old Terrapin > Drumz > Other One at the heart of it. The Other One probably bent a few brains, including mine, back then.

Yes Oro, it was miserably hot and I didn't manage heat well back then (that came when I moved out to the southwest.) Buckeye more of the same. I think Maine was a huge relief for the band and any heads that did the full tour. 7/2 probably show of the tour except for the things that made 6/23 special.

6/23 needs to be understood in context of 6/22 and all that heat. "A gift lost will be recovered." I wrote up my recollections and Gans posted it as part of a gdHour years ago. I'll see if I can find it. Blackbird>Brokedown was a truly remarkable musical gift to cap that night and that run. Totally off the cuff move. It was a thank you from the band and a blessing. Not so much bragging rights but just the feeling of how lucky we were to be there.

Alpine '89 was what it was musically because of Alpine '88.

Like this lil nugget (3/30/88)!
Really enjoyed this. Great opening trifecta, couple different era songs for variety, nice Cassidy. We get a Shakedown, fun inverted Uncle J/PITD/Uncle J, and a nice post drums sequence to ramp up the vibe!
Love to check out these shows that fall between/around official ones!

Enjoyed it so much I hit 4/3/88 for extra credit. Jers starting to get the dreaded spring north east tour bronchitis, but not the whole show? Next night I recall he sounds worse? Decent show, but I dug 3/30 more.

So then I through on Dicks 30 while doing some chores, but didn’t get to the second set, though I did catch the fun BD bonus stuff from 3/25. So not a DHB but a grateful day none the less!

Summer 88, sighhhh.
Was all stoked, armed and ready for the last six of tour, until I broke my ankle…
87 Alpine was such a hot shit show as it’s rep had blown up and like all good places it seemed to get too big? So we figured Maine would be the laid back alternative to freak freely and it surely was! When we got to Buckeye the general consensus was that besides the Blackbird bragging rights, folks were writing the whole scene off as miserably hot, too many people, and the band didn’t play that great overall?
I don’t know, I wasn’t their, that’s just the vibe we were getting.
I do know that Buckeye seemed like more of the same though I thought they played decent. Over tge years I’ve really come to enjoy this show, the first set with early Bruce encounters etc, and the three new songs to open the second was cool. But being at that venue in those conditions on crutches and still pretty sore even with enough analgesics for a platoon, it was a ruff day. Pittsburg was a god send comparatively, with no adventures through the countryside and seats to keep off the leg. Don’t recall much of that one cept maybe a good Cumberland and the first of only 2 Start your Engines, which we liked.
We’ll long/short I’d had an unfortunate incident involving ambulance and hospital before the tour started that time has led me to believe was related to excessive acetaminophen in the analgesics? So had to skip Toga, gulp, yep, that one still really hurts, but had to go back to hospital for upper GI and testing. One of the few shows I had a ticket fir but had to get rid of : (
Crotchfester was a good show, and nice flat soft baseball lawn which combined with a week or so of healing made things more fun and less hassle. Another very crowded show and a really muggy day.
So when we got to Maine the night before and it snowed it was quite the change lol.
Maine was a blast all the way around. Things came together and a good time was had by all, though the long slog home on the fourth after all those shows etc was ruff and rememberer it felt weird not seeing then on the fourth.

So since I’ve never heard any of the 88 Alpines (that I remember), figure I’ll fire up 6/23/88 in BC and DVs honor!

PS: yeah BC those Hampton shows truly were mind blowing. 3/27/88 is definitely one of the best shows I was fortunate to be at, though 3/26 was the only show I went to that I didn’t get in…

Alpine '88

Yep, I was there too DV. So I have a fair amount of memories about these shows. Some of its already out there. One of the most powerful Dead concert moments was the Morning Dew last night of the run (6/23). that, and the Believe it or Not earlier in the set. But some aspects of this run were a struggle. Damn was it hot. did Buckeye and Pittsburgh afterwards. my last Midwest shows until 7/8 and 7/9/95 at Soldier Field.

Without a doubt one weird thing going back to the tapes is that Healy seemingly recorded the entire run with strong panning across the sound stage. I have never heard anything like it on any other SBD. Question came up on the GD Hour many years ago regarding the panning on the SBD source for 6/23. At the time I had never gone back to listen to the other nights, but 6/23 tape I knew very well. I replied that I thought maybe the panning was a one-off and gave the context. But no, It's there 1st night 6/19. and it's on the Jam of the Week first set 6/20. "Sort of" cool in some ways and sort of a big WTF was going on with that guy. Just odd stuff. Truly.

I had 2 mail order pavilion seats each night. sold the other to a friend who in the end only made the last night. 6/20 was near soundboard to left. Great sound. "kids" next to me proceeded to stub in 20+ of their friends on what were like 4 seats worth of tickets - completely freaking rude, asinine, and ridiculous - literally forcing myself and others out of our legit seats as more and more of them got ticketed in. I was already overheated by Day 2 and not very tolerant of that thoughtlessness. sort of still pisses me off, though I write that with something of a dream time memory smile on a beautiful rainy morning here in the high desert some 30+ years later. at set break I was wandering the lawn and ran into some other folks i knew from OH (school/home at the time) and when Set II rolled in I was like F*** the pavilion I'm hanging up here, and we danced our asses off upper hill right end. It was great. Super fun. Remember an awesome Terrapin. I'm not sure if I have ever heard 6/20 since, maybe once. listened to JOTW 1st set last night and now again listening this morning. It's a great 1st set. I'm like, Box of Rain song 2??!! Band is on. Guessing Dave will feed us the whole show JOTW but probably will stream the whole show today.

Will have to check out 3/30/88. Was at Hampton right before this and that was some mind blowing music.

Interesting Dave had the Alpine 88 shows as well as the 88 Met Center show in the Tapers compendium. To be honest, I don't look at that to much.

I was at these shows as a wild eyed 17 year old. Great times. The Alpine shows were 4 shows in five days in the hot sun. We had a crazy drought that summer. Our crew rented RVs for those shows and we were able to camp at Alpine. Crazy times.
I am hoping someday we get the Alpine box set 87-89, would be a fun ride.

Speaking Of 1988

New in Jam-o-Week: 6-20-88 Alpine Valley.
Most days I only have time for a taste so Jam and Taper's fit the bill.
Already curated by Dave so you know it will have something tasty.
So often it gets me to try eras and tours I'm not as familiar with like last week's two from 6-11-92 (Jam) and 6-12-92 (Taper's) from Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY. Both very tasty which I rarely expect from the later era. It all just depends on whether they're ON that night no matter what era. Like this week's Taper's 6-17-88 selection from Bloomington, MN was NOT ON. Didn't help that I didn't care for the setlist. But I always learn something so thanks Dave L. and POTDWD crew.

I think we did hit a few other 88 shows in the past, 3/27 Hampton from the DL series, 4/1 from RT4. 2 and I believe the 30 Trips 88 show as well from 7/3.

I was going to offer a show from 87, but I will save that for next week.

I tend to play this - and the companion Dicks Picks 30 with the 25th and 28th featured - every year as a prelude to starting off on the European tour. But these shows are great in their own right. The first shows of 1972 after New Years Eve ( that I have) and so usually they are the first 1972 shows I play each year. And they sound so refreshing and energetic - whatever I have been playing before hand, this always sounds like what I have been waiting for.

The 2nd disc is the center piece, but the first set is top notch too. Extra variety for this line up with the additions of Pigpen, which introduces a level of blues and soul that they never recaptured. With Keith on board, anything seems possible. Amazing how "The Other One" was such a powerhouse in earlier years and got reinvented so successfully as at these shows. Jazz rock as literally no one else played it.
Each musician sounds at the top of their game too. You can listen to the whole and zero in and out on any musician and hear something of interest - but I tend to notice Bob Weir more on these dates than is usually the case.
All this...and Europe 72 to follow.

I don't think this release gets a lot of play at my house, but it should. That Good Lovin, Truckin -Drums-Other One-Me and My Uncle-Other One into Wharf Rat is a wild ride of Dead nirvana. Man, so good and nice Sugar Mag, The Stranger, NFA, GDTRFB, NFA. Good call Daverock.

And then there is the bonus disc, great stuff First Show.
Definitely an underrated release.

Terrapin

Jim-I like the incantatory quality of Terrapin - the vehicle into the great unknown, I think you said. Its just that I like this vehicle to come right at the beginning of the show, so the whole show is presented as magical, rather than near the end, where it usually cropped up. I preferred the music to take over from the songs in the second set, and Terrapin seemed a bit too wordy, to me, for this to really happen.
But it a moot point - great song wherever it appeared.

I haven't listened to them in a while and I like them both. This gives us something to work on for the rest of the week.. (as always other options welcome).

Sorry for being a bit preoccupied lately.. duty called.. but the work is all done for now. Time to relax a bit....

4/16/78. Great recording, really good show from the Spring 78 tour. I was hankering for a good Peggy-O. I love Garcia Ballads, I bet I am not alone.

Oh, long story short, servers drives dead again...it’s maker is frustrated as supposedly he gets more and more new drives that are fucked outta the box etc. so He’s becoming unsure which drives to use, forget what he ended up going with?

First operating drive was spinning disc, spent after about 2 years, so “we’ll replace with SSD as there more reliable”
Well that died too, now “SSDs are shit etc, we’re using spinners now”....Replaced OS drive, but now thinks Music drive is dead too?
This is why I fucking hate computers and thus never learned about them. There is no consistency or reliability at all, no one seems to know what their doing, they just seem to guess, by parts, and hope, and if not, repeat with different parts etc, etc... worse, it’s 6-7 hours round trip (in summer) and because it’s a custom boutique instrument, shipping’s out...

But what’s a freak to do, this running up stairs every 45 to 80 minutes and then having to stand in front of a wall of music and have to CHOOSE! is for the birds. @#&*+% technology, like women, can’t live with em, can’t live without...
anyway, my question is what kind of drives y’all using, or what kind would you recommend, and what kind would you denounce? I mean both which format, and what brands etc?
Can’t believe drives dying every year or so is status quo, then again...

I have Western Digital HD’s for storage and backup. Multiple backups, various size HD’s.

In fact, tonight I’m going to assemble a Thunderbolt 3 RAID mirror system using 4 x 10TB WD Gold HD’s.

Also have three Thunderbolt 2 RAID mirror setups: 2 x 6TB WD Black HD’s (two of them, one has GD in AIFF format, the other non-GD AIFF, and all bands in ALAC format), and 2 x 12TB WD Gold to backup all files (AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, AAC-320).

You can never have too many backups.

If you use your HD to actually play and listen to the files then you should expect the HD to die every few years due to heavy use. Regular consumer HD’s are designed for moderate use. Heavy use requires gaming/video editing HD’s (WD Black) or enterprise (WD Gold).
Seagate also makes enterprise and gaming HD’s along with lower performance consumer HD’s.

WD Blue is a moderate use consumer drive and is probably what is inside the black plastic case of the WD MyBook drives at Best Buy, Amazon, etc.
I have a lot of those black plastic consumer drives that I use for audio and video storage and processing, but have made the higher end RAID systems for redundant backups.

I play music on music players that use micro SDXC cards and plug the player into my stereo.

The HD’s are just for storage and backup, and they are unplugged when not in use.

Luckily I do have a backup drive, but thinking I might get another....
The server is custom made for high end audio, it’s the only thing I use the machine for, no internet etc...so it is the unit I stream from. So I guess replacing these regularly is an unfortunate necessity of life : (

EDIT: I guess he’s going with Western Digital BLACK 0.5TB for Windows 10 drive., and Storage drive is an Enterprise 4TB NAS-specific hard drive from Seagate called the "Ironwolf".

I've had ok luck with Western Digital and Seagate. Had a very bad experience with Maxtor ten years ago or so.. It's a crapshoot though.. you can never tell.....

The Downhill from Here DVD video is fantastic. So much energy in those shows. Might be best of the July 89 run.

I was already planning on watching the video.
Almost watched it last night but decided to hold off until today.
Had set 2 on VHS in the late 90’s. If you haven’t seen the video before Cutler applied the “Cutler Video Protection System” where he overdubs himself talking in a few places because, as he says, “ I can’t have videos going out there with good mixes on them”.

I’ve got the complete show on DVD-R now.
It’s also on Utooob I believe.

Hopefully I’ll soon be able to watch all 3 nights on BluRay……

7/19/89-Alpine

I didn't know it at that time, but this was my last show. And it was spectacular! The mix I listened to isn't perfect, but it is still really good. And I do remember most of this show. I remember at the time, I told myself to take it easy for the last night of this tour. Nice Sugaree, loved the Desolation Row, which sounds much better on DHFH, Deal is a rocker. Chills still for several songs in the second set, Box of Rain, LLR and that Terrapin. Great Morning Dew and the Lovelight encore. Great trip down memory lane.

We would all benefit from cleaned up released versions of the 89 Alpine run. Let's get it out.

Disc 2 craziness - Comes A Time > Drums > Other One > Space > Eyes of the World > Jam > Other One > Going Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night. The second encore Not Fade Away.

I haven't read through the months of action that have gone on since I checked out, so whoever wants to give me a synopsis of what I missed that'd be great ;)
But yeah I actually went on a collecting spree the likes of which I hadn't quite experienced before (and I was already hardcore).
Completed my GD lossless collection and then moved into some outer realms of collecting madness, which was dominated by a Huge bender with The Replacements and The Beatles.

I had to give TGOGD a rest for awhile after over a year of super intense listening.

A nice pallet cleanse as OB/Jim would say.

But you all were in my heart and mind and I'm glad to see you're all carrying on.
I'll try and keep better tabs, but this collecting music thing takes up all my time!

Fox Box

I've been calling for both a Fox Box (72) and BCT Box (72) since give or take since Ventura came out. ..but when that pre-release Amazon tell came to light.. I did post I hope it's a Fox Box.

I think a few years ago I scripted a Dr. Seuss like chant calling for a Fox Box. I don't think I deserve any credit though.. lots of people love both this venue and the shows performed there including Garcia himself who raved about the Fox and the Capitol Theatres in an interview long, long ago. Just dreaming.. the place is legendary and we all knew the tapes existed.

It's a good day on dead.net, I'll take the win.

Good to see you, GOGD.. we have all done a terrible job trying to fill in.. big shoes to fill.. special shoutout to dvikes, the steady heartbeat that helped keep this all together. Sort of like the glue that kept this house of cards together recently.

Sounds like me right now.. just got back from a rather fun birthday party, so I am seeing multiples.. Yes, there are Fox's all over the place. I am sure the GD played at more than two, but St. Louis and Atlanta had some mighty fine shows..

I am cool with 78. We should consider 77 and 90 at some pint in the future too. Fun times to enjoy GD music. I am really psyched for this box. The Fox Box. Low hanging fruit to be sure, but man these are some really good shows. Might as well let the fun ouzo into this thread.

Yes Jim. To my ears this might be the best April 78 show! Sound quality is A++. Performance is outstanding. For those of you that have never listened to this show check it out. I won't ruin it for you.

Still no word on #39. Given the latest news, I am hoping for a 1980 release. 🤠

Not familiar enough with this tour to pick a “best” but this bad boy outshines the bits of 4/18 I’ve heard, and 4/16, but still think I’m partial to 4/15, perhaps just because of that one caught me by surprise and knocked me off my feet?
This tour (April 78) is definitely my new favorite hardly explored niche.
And man, what a amazing sounding show! Not too much of that low mid bass/drums that sometimes plagues Mickey Godchaux Band occasionally (imho). Nit pick would be it gets a little thin near the end as they get LOUD...but that’s actually probably “accurate” for that era.
Kudos again to Miss Betty! Wow!

Did the first of the 6/86 Greek as it got the PF seal of goodness. Another great surprise, gonna have to finish that run off...

I’ve been getting all kinds of (new to me, or replacing copies with actual) music and several shows cued up on Relisten, but no damn time! Uuugghhh, this always happens lol. I know, good problem to have.

Oh, and currently spinning this Dave McMurray disc that just arrived...SWEET!

Hopefully new Dave’s next week, and RT 2.2 that I’ve been waiting on big time since I passed it up back when, idiot!
So can’t wait for that one to drop as I’ve never heard it!

December '78 Fox Atlanta

Not too bad either with that Shakedown out of an Ollin Arageed Space. Some funny banter during the show about a moat or alligator pit too somewhere in the first set. There's a radio interview Weir does adjacent to this show that's up on the archive. I'd say at least it's a worthwhile juxtaposition with 4-11. Jacksonville 4-8 is interesting, too with that butter Betty sound. Some of my best tapes BITD.

So 12/17 today?

She was definitely part of the paid Grateful Dead staff. Had different jobs or responsibilities through out the years and after Rex died. I think it ended after an issue with Brent in the early eighties.

However I think it is true that she was not paid for recordings she made with her own equipment. I believe the ABCD LLC transaction kicked some money her way, however, I have no idea how much.

Still planning on getting to 12/17.

There is a cut at the end of the tape rendering Sugar Magnolia and the encore Johnny B Goode in AUD sound. This show is a nice example of the post-Egypt '78 sound. Overshadowed I suppose by the slightly more appreciated 12-16 and 12-19 (both also available only in AUD sound if memory serves). I like 12-12, too. We already listened to that here. Nice board of that. Wasn't Garcia jamming on the Bean in some of these December shows? At least the Nashville show I think. I gotta tune into 12-28 Golden Hall again sometime soon. Nice board of that around (and around) too.

Nice little underrated gem and my first listen. I enjoy how delicate Jerry's voice is in this era, in fact all of '78 after his January laryngitis. Nice opening and Peggy-O plus a strong MNS show closer in the first set. I guess the wild card is the post space Shakedown, what's not to love there.. it almost seems like they are going into Morning Dew right before the Ollin Arageed jam. An interesting show.. patch and all.

I like this Fox themed diversion.. good way to show support for the new box set.

Thanks for Fox Pick. Version I listened to was a little rough, but that is the deal sometimes. 78 was such an interesting year for the band. A lot of changes...

Looking forward to a 1980 pick being announced this week.

Think I’m going to try and sneak that 12/17 in here at work, and save 4/10 for the big system as these spring 78 Beatty’s have been blowing my mind...if I get out early maybe I’ll try tonight?
But ASAP fo sure as I’m itching to hear it and have a wave of new stuff to get too. I know what I’m doing this WE (hopefully)...

It's amazing to me what a difference a good recording makes. Especially when you are into it and turn it up to 11.

I am not an era hound, bound to certain years or band configurations.. but my comfy shoes seem to groove better to 68 through 74.. I can call it home to any show from any era. But good recordings do make a difference, which makes this head think the 80's and beyond would fare better through the eyes of history if Betty (or Kid or whoever [RIP Rex and Bear]) had been behind the controls, loaded up the Ampex and hit the red button.

There were some fine shows along the way that fell in the wayside simply because the recordings were not AAA+.

Great to see this thread move beyond barriers, I have learned a lot. (and to my dismay or great pleasure, worked a little less as a result).

I think the move to cassettes also hurt the process. The reel to reel recordings in most cases really held up over time.

Because it looks like Dave is in no hurry to release shows from 1980, I thought I would recommend another show from 1980, 10/2/1980?

Hope you all receive your copies of #39 soon, I am looking forward to receiving mine as well, but it looks like it is not happening this week.

Edit: I am a huge fan of Pearson and John Cutler. Cutler did a great job in the late 80s and early 90s.

Nothing personal.. but no, I am not a big fan of the ultra-matrix. I like my soundboards crisp.

To be fair, there may be reasons beyond Dan's control that influenced how the cassette master era came to be. I still enjoy them but wonder what could have been....
