Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Thanks man.

So, we are getting close to mid March and we haven't had a box set announcement. Looks like we will not have a Spring Box. They might be setting us up for a fall release to coinside with that fall 74 run. We will see.

In the meantime, cuing up 11/5/77, Dicks #34.

Had this year's back in the fall.
Took a week. Worst one in years.
Hit me almost 3 weeks after the flu shot when I thought I'd be fully immunized by then. I always blame it on kids going back to school making a germ factory, lol.

Pittsburgh 4/3 was the first time I had to call in “sick” from the hotel pay phone.
Trick was to find out how much the call cost (remember no cells so people still used pay phones, and have proper coinage before so call could go through and they’d not know it was LD , AND, no one was dumb enough to call from the room lol
“Hello, Louie, I’m afraid I’m not feeling so well…” while tripping freaks are laughing and yelling in the background lol. Yeah, I may be dumb but I’m not stupid ; )
And because I’d just started that new job and actually liked it, had to blow off the excellent Ann Arbor shows, had tix and a ride with BOO469 and everything, sigh…
4/8: went with a gal who was just a friend, but we probably should have been more, and not sure how after this show we weren’t lol. Between the song list and the X we probably were hugging the whole damn show lol
Yeah, wasn’t playing on tripping as I had to drive back that night (more on that later). But long short some guy came by in the lot and figured, hell we’ll just split a quarter 2.5 ways and be fine. I feel bad cause I kinda messed with the guy about if it was good etc. We’d just spent much of fall 88 going down that road a lot so felt pretty confident about our experience, but boy, oo-eee that was some good sheet. Id never before or since had X that strong, holy crap lol. And the poor gal with me had never done it!
So as you know, that comes on very fast comparatively, so we dropped right before going in and man before we were even out the lot shit hit us like a freight train. I remember she started getting the fear as we approached the one busy street we had to cross then up the steps and in, but she was having a hard time.
It was all gloomy and noises and I think steam coming outta the manholes lol, like instantly being plunged into a scary movie! But being a pro, I knew it’s get better after that first big rush and knew set and setting if we could just get inside all would be well with the world!
So after careful tender sharing of this key data, we finally got the nerve to go, once inside we were so high we just walked right in the back abd stayed there the whole night. Thank goodness the ushers didn’t kick us out lol.
But once inside, we immediately could feel the love and as I say, I think we swayed and hugged and danced the night away in a awesome blissful state.
Probably why I didn’t “know” this show better lol.
But the story doesn’t end there. Even after, another anomaly, we were still too damn high and there was no way I was going to make back to WNY from Cincinnati that way, so don’t recall who/how etc, but somehow we ended up across the river flopping in somebodies? hotel room on the floor with only just enough floor space for us to curl up and crackle a few hours before leaving.
Now the part all these years later that frosts my ass, is that we didn’t go to Louisville.
Not sure if she had to be back, but I had that relatively new job so I had to be back Monday after calling in previous week from Pittsburgh. But 4/9 was a Sunday, and back then my CC Cassady skills were epic, so if we’d have gone and not tripped etc, it would have been tough, but I’d done it before: (drive all night after a show and go to work next morning.)
Probably paranoid of crossing the mason-hippie line lol
But whatever, as it’s all so long ago, yeah, that’s one I wish I could redo.
Thank goodness for the archive though so we can relive all these wonderful shows, joyful ecstatic moments and some of the fear and danger too, now comfortably and safely from our homes! We are pretty fortunate in so many ways!

Come on it’s time to go

1/17 and 2/21 we’ve done, former good, latter excellent!

But amazingly I don’t think I’ve hit all of the January Avalon run, so that’s where I’ll start. Then 2/7 and 2/15, maybe I’ll rehit 2/11…anything else we haven’t done in March that’s worthy?
Would like to hit the Ark shows as I’m not sure I’ve heard all and think they should be done all at same time. I’d like to try to get up to RT 4.1 for this trip, then I’ll probably go back to 79 and/or 84? But I marked down 6/27&28 and 10/31/69 and will hit those later in the year when I need a 69 cleanse again lol

Ha, my only purpose in life now seems to be to battle poor health, and try to listen to every Dead show I reasonably can….well, at least I’m kicking ass at one of em ; )

DV: rut roah, seems there’s been some real bad flu this year.
    Hope y’all feel better soon!
And big kudos to the Edina boys on the big state championship!

I mostly went with the Ultramatrixs to keep things consistent.
I found them mostly good, but no idea of what’s available overall?
Yep, we were at the Pittsburg shows (DL 9).
The first is sorta anaemic, but the second night (3rd) was good.
Still wonder if another right city, street, but wrong house?
As good as the third is, I still think others might be as good or better, especially 4/5! Really, there’s no dog in the bunch and several could be considered a top pick depending on who’s picking ; ) Hopefully interested folks can find a show or two here to dig!

    Ok, January Avalon

Hell of a post on spring 89. Recordings available are hit and miss and don't match the multi tracks from summer through fall 89. Still some great shows there and would love to see them put one out for official release. I believe the one and only release was from the download series #9 from the Igloo (18 years ago).

Hope we get some release news soon.

2/21: First Dream Bowl. Short but solid.

Hey Bob t. Good to hear from you.

I always really like the Althea from 9/3/80, download series #7.

In fact that show and release sounds like a good pick for today. Hope you all can check it out again.
Download series #7, 9/3 and part of 4/1980.

Also has a tight version of Deal where Brent goes over the top on backup vocals. I'll check it out for the Althea today. P.S. 7-28-82 nice set II version of Althea there, coincidentally the show has a Deal, too. (part of an L>S>D to end set I.)

Right on WTJ!

I really dig these download series releases. Really great shows through out the series. I know it would never happen, but I would love to see them go back to all of these shows and release them on CDs. The music is there and they have all been mastered by Norman. I would buy them all. Okay, not going to happen but it would be great to see more music for sale on this site.

I remember 6-7 years ago there was so much music for sale on this site, the problem for me I didn't buy more of it at the time.

Anyway, be well out there. Looking forward to that next box in October...... And I guess no MUATM again this year☹️

A potential super spreader event, in multiple cities.
So, let’s have a Shakedown Stream that doubles as a seaside chat announcement for an upcoming Box of videos.

Funny that DV wants the Download Series to be available on CD and on the DaP39 board a few days ago some people were complaining that new CD releases weren’t available for download.

I like 9-3,4%-80 I believe, but have not heard them in a while.
Can’t go there at the moment since I just saw today’s pick but already have 4-7-91 playing.
If that hasn’t been a pick yet, and if you are not familiar with it, give it a play.
So far no 91 in the DaP series, but that’s OK, keep the 91’s coming out on video. In fact, it’s time for View From The Vault 5, the first release of the newly resurrected series to start coming out on BluRay!

Yes Dave, I am waiting (im)patiently to send money to Rhino for video, with audio in 24/192.

Realizing I am a little late to the party here.. My first instinct was also the 81 Essen W. Germany version.. but,

I was a little bored with things, and especially TV tonight so I picked up wherever it was I last left off on Long Strange Trip and Al Franken happened to have a lot to say about Althea. "You know.. I've listened to like a million Althea's" He called the version from 5/16/80 (multi-track, GoTo Nassau) the one with "the most hair raising solo" "oh my god, it's so unbelievably great"

So there you have it.. it was on Act V, Deadheads. Franken said, he's not a GD historian, he's just a fan. "I'm a Deadhead"

Thanks Al.

ConeKid.. thanks for summoning the spirits of Shakedown Stream. I wholeheartedly agree.

I passed them along.... hope everyone is having a good summer..... How about some Cape Cod shows from 79, in honor of summer even though they played there in October...... Love that second set opener!! Bob t

Hey Bob t. Did someone say 1979. Yes, those two shows sound like a great idea to me.
So 10/27 and 10/28 79. Let's do it. I definitely need to give the 30 Trips show another proper listen.

I was out of pocket for most of second part of the day yesterday. What did I miss Oroborous?

Been trying to at least keep the shows flowing, but haven’t had much quality listening time lately.
Did a full listen with 39 on Saturday, Sunday/Monday hit Dicks 35 as well as the rest of 8/6/71 to keep on the Doc train.
Snuck in that 89 show. Another good 89 off the list.
Hit second set of 9/3 from 80s DL. Solid set for sure, nice High Time...can relate, having a hard time living the good life...
79 sounds fine, just not I’ll have the time...no worries, next man up!
I’ll try and work it in with more 71 over the next few days.
Carry On!

on a slightly different Althea note. several years ago someone over at IA pointed to a real cool video of Jerry playing Althea where he seamlessly switches from using a pick to finger picking and then back again. like a little magic trick watching it.

No 13th Avenue in San Francisco, Funston Avenue instead. Sometime in the early 80s I was in The Postermat in North Beach owned by the famous Ben Friedman. I met the drummer from the 13th Floor Elevators there. Talk about one wacky Texas band. Gave Sir Douglas Quintet a run for the pesos.
Tomorrow I need to follow doctors orders and listen to August 14, 1971. Grateful Dead at Berkeley Community Theater. My first west coast Dead show.
Dang near green as Ireland here in southwest New Mexico. The clouds have been astonishing, psychedelic, magnificent, or pretty dang bueno. As Rodney Dangerfield says in one of his films; “Rolling Thunder!”

I have seen that Althea video.. he sort of uses his stubby finger for pick management. Very cool.. and it kind of explains the feeling and textures he is able to add to his tone. It adds an incredible touch.

Though the second set is awesome, and I like how they get a bit outside on Dancin’, this one has felt like one of those?
.....like I think Dave gets into the right neighborhoods and streets, but sometimes picks the wrong house?
Don’t get me wrong, great show, but...or is this just me?

First time with the next night. Going to need to hit some of that again.
Hell, fall 79 is yet another tour that needs the “treatment” but alas that ain’t happening soon.

One of my favorite scenes in nature: the red rock with bright green foliage, especially after it’s rained and the rocks wet
Yaaassss, tomorrow will get 8/14/71 into the mix. (8/15 on Sunday)
Staying on the old Doc Train, striders the conductor, woo-woo!
All aboard!

Yeah, it’s pretty amazing how often, and deftly he switch’s that pick around and finger picks perhaps more than folks realize. Believe Kesey, a magician himself, used to comment on JGs slight if hand technique?

For some reason my last post was deleted. Not sure why. Still working my way through the two 79 Cap Cod shows. These shows are really good, that fall 79 laid back vibe. 10/28/79 is maybe better than 10/27. That China- Rider is hot. Half Step Franklins. Thanks Bob t.
Okay, will check out that 8/12/87 show next from Red Rocks.

i saw the post - was surprised when i returned and it was gone. i think you got swept up in a broad anti-spam dragnet - there was some weirdness between my last post and Unkle Sam. Can't believe they didn't grab Annie too. All the shows on that 87 mountain tour were sweet (I think Park City 8/20 is my favorite like i rambled on about last summer.) Somewhere yesterday someone posted a cassette cover of 8/12 and I'm like oh yeah the myth times 87 (ha! not quite the myth times of Berkley 8/14 and 8/15!! - they should mini-box those 2 nights. ) but yeah 87 was a good year! 8/!! first night was my favorite of that Red Rocks run - snagged 2nd row left center for the crew (Phil and Bob right out from us) and that was 1 of only 2 times I was ever that close. A CA taper in the party had mics over the ears and listening to his work you got the slow subtle back and forth of his head as they jammed Playing (it was an awesome audience pull - don't think its circulating.) Beautiful fun evening.

thanks (in advance) for the cape cod POTD 2-fer. cape cod - that's almost like alaska for goodness sakes. legend.

taking my first spin through H-S-F from Dave's 39 #4441. I like it!! Early on had the 4-17 show SBD and it was a fave - recording quality not quite on the same level here (without an A - B yet) but it has that "swing". also haven't gotten to Disc 3 filler yet but really happy up front that they included He's Gone > Little Star filler. I remember hearing Bob Star from one (more than one?) show and thinking that it was pretty damn cool. not a full fledged song but the kinda thing that would have seriously bent my mind live probably. somewhere someone (maybe on Steve Hoffman forum?) remarked that it reminded them of Banyon Tree in that spoken-word-song-sense. I saw and heard Banyan tree a couple of times and thought it was really really cool.

Strider - have been watching with envy all the rain down there. what was going on in the San Juans only lasted about 3 weeks but reallyreally impressive . Over in our part of Utah not so much but a couple of storms got us. Abajos and LaSals got a whole lot more. In recent years have been working down somewhere in the general southern 1/2 NM area. Miss it. yeah Oro!! - rain glistening on the redrock and happy wet high desert plants

Just got to the drums from 39 - what the hell are those little chimes that Mickey(?) is playing? - freaking awesome! Now marimbas?

The Jerry slight of hand with the pick definitely felt like a magic trick. not the only one up his sleeve for sure.

This music is every bit as important and historical as Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. ..or at least we will agree on this in a mere 50 years.

I'm pretty sure Salieri was calling Mozart's symphonies cover band pop noise and his followers freaks and touch heads too.. Not sure history smiled on his thinking...

Looking at 6/3/76 for today. Let me know if this one looks good to you all?

Had a great time with last weeks picks and also got in Dick's 33 in the car over the weekend. Haven't listened to this one in a while and yes, it is still outstanding. I don't know how anyone could listen to the second set of the first day and not be really into it, but, I guess it happens.

Nice Hard to Handle in there too, rare Lovelight, good sheet, just getting a little burnt on the repetitiveness.
Looking forward to the changes coming up!

Yes, love this Thread. Not as active as it used to be but we are still moving along.

I think the first show back in 76 is pretty good. Sound quality is a solid B++.

Obviously I think they were trying to find their way back during this month. Love these June Scarlett's.

Did 3/21/90 last night.
I’ve been hitting 6/4/76 today.
Not as good so far as 6/3, both the audio and the music, still fun to check out and another notch off the ole proverbial list...
Yeah there was a Betty for 6/3 that sounded good and though you can tell their a little rusty,
it’s a good show with cool first versions of several songs.
These shows seem different /unique than even the next/following ones?

Just finished my listen, and I really enjoyed it! First show of 76, and so many new tunes! I agree that they are a little rusty, but I found a lot to love about this show, particularly the first Lazy Lightning>Supplication that totally smoked, the early 2nd set Wharf Rat, the post "drums" Must Have Been the Roses, and the Help>Slip>Frank that comes so late in the show. The Slipknot in particular grabbed my attention - really good stuff. Cap it all off with an encore of the first Wheel, and you've got a great kick-off to a great month (and an overall great year) of Grateful Dead music.

Thanks for the rec! This is my last week of summer before returning to work (school starts on Monday here in Bmore,) and I plan on hitting up as many full shows as I can while I relax one last time before the grind. Tomorrow I will plan on 3/21/90 - I already have it cued up! Rock on!

Been doing 11-1-85 in the car this week and listened to post-Space this morning. I love the sound of She Belongs To Me on this release.

Hope there are more good sounding 85’s in the Vault, especially from summer.

I don't remember if we did this one or not. I am a bit biased, but like this release. The next night is no slouch either. If we wanted to continue the 85 vibe, try 11/2 (or both). Phil is high in the mix, decent setlist, good show.

If you've never heard it, it's worth a spin. Add in 10/31 and 11/1 and you have a nice, congealed threefor or as we call it here at dead net a Brewer Hat Trick.

the fall run that year was killer, check out the Oct 26th show from the Sun Dome in Tampa, awesome Drums>space into a killer Comes a Time, with a Midnight hour encore. That was the year that they brought back the tunes Pig used to do.

I hope we haven't lost GOGD to the dark side.. (the Phish.com pick of the day thread).

Right on USam, there is something about Fall '85 (all of '85 really), all the new songs and several high energy shows to pick from. 20th Anniversary, just ten short years left.

Thanks for the pick on this one. Good show.

Do we have another announcement coming next week??

Pick up some Bell's Octoberfest if you can for the weekend. Enjoy!

I mixes right into the fold of 11/1.

It was a zoo.. the shows were, I think, quite good.. but the last time the Dead would be allowed to play in the city of Richmond.

If that's ok with the bakers dozen that seems to follow this thread.

....yeah. What happened to him? 11.2.85 is a good show.

Wanted to listen to summer 85 and 8-24-85 was on my music player, so I fired it up without realizing that it was Boreal. Once Bob mentioned Truckee I knew what show it was. Actually sounds better than one would anticipate based on the negative vibe that hangs around the show.
I wasn’t there but aren’t the heat and traffic issues the major reason that this show gets a bad rap?
I’ve mountain biked in that area in the hot summer and the sun is intense up there. And not a lot of shade on the ski slope. Never skied there before but behind Boreal is Sugar Bowl which has some really nice chutes and back country terrain.

11/1/85 ✔️ Forget about this one. Perhaps not the best played show of the year but fun and a great set list!
Yass uncle, most of that tours good. I only saw 2 in Chrotchfester but they were, and are near and dear!
And hey, among other things it’s got a sweet She Belongs!
When this first came out I was like “finally, some 85”, but the haters hated, and over the years I’ve wondered if DL picked a good neighborhood and street, but stopped at the wrong house? Ala Dave. But that’s just thinking out loud and splitting hairs...I like it worts and all!
11/2/85: unfortunately I haven’t gotten to this one, which is a shame cause I’ve not heard in forever. Second set was a go to tape BITD, great set, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the first? Need to circle back on it...
Yeah Jim that little 10/31, 11/1, and 11/2 is a nice little southern pie! Though the 29th is worth a listen too.

8/21/68 spinning as we speak. Good sheet mon! Needed a 68 fix! Perhaps VII to carry it on?
I’d like to propose 7/3/66 and the 50th bonus stuff from 7/29&30/66 sometime in the near future?
Perhaps after Conekids 8/22&23&87 rec?

Would really love it if we could do 9/4, 5, and 6/91 for the/(my) 30th anniversary?
I Remember GOGD recommended them last year and I’m not sure I’ve gotten to em yet, so would love to do so if anyone’s down? These were the humping with whales shows so I’d really like to check em out...

But first things first!
Jumped ahead on these since I don’t think I’d be able to get to em Monday or Tuesday, but wanted to keep up on the ole Doc train, with conductor Strider ; ) All aboard!
8/23/71 ✔️Felt this one was hot right outta the gate with a nice Big RR! Perhaps nothing out of the ordinary, but just seemed like a solid, good energy show? Another cool spacey TOO. Also decent helping’ of grease!
8/24/71✔️ I think I might if enjoyed the 23rd more overall? Perhaps situational...but changes is starting to creep into the mix with new tunes! Empty Pages I know I’ve heard, but perhaps not in a very long time, so felt like first time lol.
Interesting, made me think of a Brent style tune...and of course the first Brown Eyed Women, I think?
Fun how it’s so different, especially without the three chord, staccato verse start!
Some more good grease including a Hurts me Too that could easily get mistaken for E72! Tight!
Well, one more then off until October but back with almost yet another whole new band!
Really looking forward to 10/19 as I’ve never heard and there’s all those new songs.

Great Pick!
Another left field chestnut and another notch on the ole bedpost of shows!
Love how they pack so much into a relatively small container.
Good sounding too!

They played the Dark Star Suite yesterday on TIGDH but I only caught the beginning of the program.. if my ears and memory are correct, the Dark Star started at the beginning yet all of the copies on Archive.org suffer from a reel flip and are missing the beginning. Lemieux also said it was recorded on 8 track and went into a long dissertation about what was recorded on 8 track, then scrapped when 16 track came out, etc.

My thinking is.. it's not copies from the 8 track master that circulate and they have a more complete Multi-Track in the vault just sitting there waiting.. and begging to get a Full Norman and the Plangent Treatment.
