Hey now! With good ticks at $100 a crack, $ is a little too tight right now... Going to both shows in Chicago, solo, and looking for a rider or two that can chip in gas $. Also have hotel for both nights, if you want to throw a couple bucks to share the room, that would be cool too, be aware that my snoring can be heard a mile away though... I'm in NW Wisconsin, around an hour and a half away from either Duluth/Superior, Twin cities or Eau Claire. Felons need not apply...

I'm looking for an old friend/boyfriend from back in the day. For the sake of privacy, I'll just say that his name is Ed or Eddie O. Went to graduate school at the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center circa 1982 - 1984. At that time, he had about 400 cassettes of the Grateful Dead, a Nakamichi deck, some awesome Klipsch speakers and had seen The Grateful Dead all over the world, at least 300+ times. Anyone at The East-West Center at the time would remember him 'cause he used to blast The Grateful Dead outta those Klipsch speakers for all to hear, day or night 'cause going to class was not his strong suit. :-). Just curious to see where he's at after 25 years of long strange trips. Thanks, all.

Hey Fly-N-Eye You can start by picking up Dick's Picks 9, Bruce at Madison Square Garden. Maybe not the best show ever but a great Jerry-Bruce riff on Tenessee Jed and a really fun Bruce/Vince/Phil jam going into drums. Fun Iko, as well. I don't now the dates but Bruce tended to show up at the summer shows at RFK stadium in DC (he apparently lives in Virginia) during the last years.

Could it be Freeway Jam by Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group?
The album is called Live and that version of the song is about 7 and 1/2 minutes long.

New to this forum, wandering around kinda glassy-eyed this New Year's Day. Looking for opinions about the best live versions of Dead songs, and a legal source for good downloads, for example: what's the best live version of "Althea", and where can I buy a legit download of that version? Thanks, and happy 2019 to all!

Did the Grateful Dead ever record St. James Infirmary? Did they ever play it in concert? If so, is a recording online? So far haven't found any evidence. I like their "Deep Elem Blues" (acoustic version) so much and I'd love to hear Jerry singing St. James Infirmary.

Looking for a general consensus of smoking hot live versions of Althea, say top 5 or so.
Already listened to 5-16-81: Cornell (too slow, nothing special) / 3/20/92: Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Ontario (OK ) /
10/1/94: Boston Garden, Boston, MA ( Bob's over the top MIDI or whatever guitar effects way too annoying - IMO) /
3/15/90: Capital Centre, Landover, MD (Will go with this for the playlist, but I know there's better one's out there.)
PLEASE HELP! as always, eternally Grateful.

A very long time ago, I heard a bootleg copy of Pigpen singing Sugar Magnolia in a sort of reggae / rasta type feel. I was at a party of someone I didn't know, and didn't ask to find out what show it was from. I've been looking for it ever since. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to figure out if this shirt has any value.

It's a blue tie dyed 1995 Oakland Mardi Gras shirt. I've found the white version of this online going for $200-250 but barely a mention of the tie dyed one.

White version - https://www.ebay.com/itm/VTG-90s-Grateful-Dead-Mardi-Gras-Oakland-Not-F…

I inherited this one so I know nothing about it.

Can anyone help? I can't post photos, can I?

I bought a poster that I am sure is a repro, but it has a number and a signature in pencil. It is from a 1980 show that the JGB recorded live. I can't find a comparison anywhere. Anyone here a poster expert? Thanks.

I'm looking for the concert where they played 'Attics of my Life' acoustic, but you could kind of hear the music from the ear piece. I heard it on the GD channel on xm, years ago. I cannot remember what concert it was from. Just thought I'd come here. Hugs!

Hi,

Hope you're well.

I've read in various places on the Net that The Dead shared a stage at some point with the radical psychiatrist R. D. Laing, who was a massive figure in the counterculture of the 60s and 70s. But I've never come across details of the encounter or a reliable source.

If The Dead met Laing, and shared a stage with him, when and where was it? I'd love to find out. Not only do I love The Dead but I'm also a researcher writing about R. D. Laing... if anyone could help me, I'd be super-grateful.

Would love to hear, too, if any of the band ever mentioned Laing in interviews. They'd have known of the books The Politics of Experience (1967) and Knots (1970), I'm sure. Laing, as I said, was big. E.g. in 1972 he gave a lecture at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and sold the place out a couple of weeks after Bowie had done the same. Can you imagine a psychiatrist doing that today?

Here's hoping someone can help me here.

Thanks for reading.

I just heard a Jerry quote on SiriusXM Days Between programming that went something like, "[UFO’s and Aliens] are part of the ecology; they are the carrot and stick in front of the mule of our consciousness." Does anyone have either a link to the interview or know the fuller quote?

I'm wondering if anyone recognizes this t-shirt image. It's labeled "©1989 Big Pig Publications, Boulder, CO 80306 7123" I found it among my deceased brother's Grateful Dead shirts but can't figure out if there is a direct relationship. Google comes up empty. Any ideas?

Hi! What's the best place to find / watch a past live G Dead show / concert? Youtube? I rented a large projector screen and sound system for my g/f's birthday. Trying to give her some semblance of a Dead concert experience.

I am trying to track down the show I loved as a teen via cassette. It was 69, 70 or 71 and Sittin On Top of the World was at the height of the jam. It was part of a segue and I believe also included The Other One. VERY high intensity. From what I can find, it is probably one of these shows. But they most are not available for download from the Internet Archive. Is there another avenue to download these shows?

12/10/71 Fox Theatre - St. Louis, MO
10/22/71 Auditorium Theater - Chicago, IL
04/21/69 The Ark - Boston, MA
1969-08-29 Family Dog at the Great Highway
1969-04-15 The Music Box

A couple of decades ago I found a Grateful Dead sampler cd at Best Buy that was a free giveaway. I loved that album but unfortunately somebody else decided they wanted it more. This was before MP3s and ripping music from a cd. Anyways, there was a solid Masons Children from a show that I cannot find on the cd. If anybody happens to know what show that is from, I will be forever grateful. (Pun intended)

Can't resist a challenge like this and I pretty sure I've got your answer. A Dick's Picks sampler 'A Glimpse of the Vault' was released back in 1996 and included one song from each of the first five Dick's Picks in order of release. Track 4, from Dick's Picks 4, was Mason's Children, which appeared on disc 3, all of which came from the Fillmore East show on February 14th 1970. Hope that gives you what you were looking for.

I've heard at least one version of Althea in which the guiro (presumably) ratchet-type sound is very distinct. I really like the sound and hope to find out which shows included that variant. Thanks!

Sunday on Sirius Dave Lemieux was talking about Hampton shows. He mentioned a must watch Terrapin where Jerry was 'animated'. Can someone tell me what show it was?

From your description of the intensity of the jam and the Other One and Sittin', I'm almost positive you're talking about 12/10/71. It's one of my old favorites, too. Indeed, I like it so much I happen to have an extra copy. Email me at scottshindell@gmail.com with your mailing address and it's yours.

I've never found anyone who could tell me about live Dead shows where Garcia plays pedal steel, and if any of those shows have been or are about to be released. I got a nibble of a clue that he played it at the '72 Tivoli show. True that?

As far as I can find, JG started playing pedal steel guitar live in 1970 with NRPS. As far as GD, it appears he started playing it when 'Looks Like Rain' was premiered and added to the setlist on 3/21/72, which was the 1st date of the Academy Of Music run. 'LLR' was played at every AOM show: 3/21-23/72, 3/25-28/72.

Of those, Dick's Picks 30 was released with the 3/28/72 show with bonus material from 3/25/72 (a portion of Bo Diddley's set with GD). Dave's Picks 14 was the 3/26/72 show with the bonus disc/material from 3/21 & 3/27.

'LLR' w/pedal steel gtr. was performed 3X on the E72 tour: 4/8 London, 4/11 Newcastle & 4/14 Copenhagen (Tivoli) after which it was dropped from the setlist for the rest of the tour...many on these boards are more well informed, so I will defer to them as they may have more accurate or updated info. Happy hunting...

Can anyone tell me if there was a show that Billy couldn't make and Mickey had to play without him? If so, can you point me to the show(s).

A Google search suggests that Garcia played steel with the Dead in 1969, and "Slewfoot", "Silver Threads", and "Mama Tried" on 6/28/1969 (Veteran's Auditorium, Santa Rosa) confirms it. Also: "Silver Threads and Golden Needles", Central Park, 6/22/1969.

Supposedly, he also played it on "Green Green Grass of Home", and once on "Dire Wolf" when Weir was singing.

An Archive post entitled "the-deads-acoustic-sets-1969-70" contains some more info and specific songs (he bought his steel in April, 1969).

Steve

Garcia also played pedal steel on the '87 Dylan tour. I don't know if it was on the released CD/album, but check Youtube for versions of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Tomorrow is a Long Time" (I think he played steel at the Oakland Coliseum show, which I attended).

Steve (my brother's a pedal steel player).

I know this is a long shot....but during Truckin' in the second set, the big screens were showing lots of license plates swirling around and lots of tie dye graphics and such. We heard later that the videographer had been out in the lot and came upon someone who had one of those Unbroken Chain posters of all the Dead related plates. Well, they swirled my plate up there about 6 times and I didn't have a camera or a phone to get a photo. My plate in a North Carolina plate with GARCIA on it. If you have a photo or video, please let me know! I can make a good trade with you! Unk

Does anyone know what time any of the shows started during the Europe '72 tour ? Particularly 5-11-1972 which happens to be the day of my birth. Be fun to try to figure out if and what they were playing when i popped into this world. Thanks!

Looking for any info on show at UCSB outdoor stadium, late 70’s. Was a festival with Elvin Bishop also playing. Cases of Budweiser stacked on stage. Zippy the Pinhead wandering about. Can’t find the show in the Archives. Thanks for your memories

This might be the show you are looking for.......I'll try to send you a message with the entry from Deadbase. Can't seem to add it here. UCSB 6.4.78, Campus Stadium.

Hey Friends,
My brother was born on 8/18/67. I hear tale of a small show at an American Legion Hall (I think) somewhere in Nevada (I think). Does anyone know if that show exists out there? Trying to gift it to him for his 55th next year.
Many Thanks!

I am not seeing a listing in Deadbase for that date in 1967. I do see one for the next night, 8/19/67, American Legion Hall, S. Shore, Lake Tahoe, Ca. I have no idea about a tape! unk

Walkin Blues
Candy man
Queen Jane Approximately
Loser
It’s All over Now
Far From Me
Cassidy
Don’t Ease Me In

Set 2

Hey. Seems pretty quiet around here, but I'll give it a shot.

On a hard disk full of music data I have at home, I came across a James "Blood" Ulmer show that I'd torrented probably over ten years ago, but for whatever reason, had never unpacked.

The directory was simply titled

ulmer2_27_86

There is no info file and I'm not familiar enough with his music to figure out the song titles.
Various Googling strategies have not even turned up the existence of this concert.
I'm starting to wonder if the date may be listed incorrectly.

If anyone can't point me in the direction of some info about this show, I'd be... grateful.

Thanks.

I heard a supercut of Friend of the Devil (I think on Deadcast). It recut the song using live clips from their earliest version to the later years so you could hear the evolution of the song. I can't find it or remember where it's found. Anyone know?
