Steamboats and BBQ, ice cream cones and Mardi Gras - are you ready to laissez les bons temps rouler with the "gateway" to the Grateful Dead? Meet us, won't you, in St. Louis for seven complete and previously unreleased Dead concerts that capture the heart of the band's affinity for the River City.

LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73 is a 20CD set featuring five shows from the Fox Theatre - December 9 and 10, 1971; October 17-19, 1972; and two from the Kiel Auditorium - October 29 and 30, 1973.

The seven shows in the collection span slightly less than two years, but they represent some of the best shows the Grateful Dead played during some of its peak tours. The music tells the story of a band evolving, changing from one sound to another seamlessly, precipitated – in large part – by significant personnel changes in the Dead’s lineup.

The two 1971 shows feature the original Grateful Dead lineup plus newcomer Keith Godchaux on piano. This version of the band would hold together for the next six months as the Dead embarked upon its Europe ’72 tour. By the time the Dead returned to the Fox Theatre less than a year later, they were without Pigpen, who’d played his final show with the Dead at the Hollywood Bowl on June 17, 1972. A year after the exceptional Fox 1972 shows, the Dead came back to St. Louis, but played the much larger Kiel Auditorium, touring behind the release of WAKE OF THE FLOOD, which came out just two weeks before.

All told, the band played 60 different songs during these shows highlighted by blazing romps through “Beat It On Down The Line” and “One More Saturday Night” and wistful takes on “Row Jimmy” and “Brokedown Palace” (whose lyrics give the collection its name). Meanwhile, the copious jamming ebbed and flowed like the mighty Mississippi River on multiple voyages through “The Other One” and “Dark Star.” Naturally, the band paid tribute to one of its favorite rock and rollers and one of St. Louis’ biggest stars by playing Chuck Berry songs at every show in the collection, including Pigpen galloping through “Run Rudolph Run.”

Each show has been restored and speed corrected using Plangent Processes with mastering by Jeffrey Norman. The collection comes in a slipcase with artwork by Liane Plant and features an 84-page hardbound book as well as other Dead surprises. To set the stage for the music, the liner notes provide several essays about the shows, including one by Sam Cutler, the band’s tour manager during that era, and another by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether, among others.

Due October 1st, LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73, is limited to 13,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from Dead.net.

I am most excited about 10/18/72, which is probably my favorite show from '72.

I also wish there was a 96 kHz - 24 Bit version available. While I love the bells & whistles of the box sets, I no longer listen to CDs. I immediately rip them to FLACS or ALACs to play on my streamer, computer and phone. Unfortunately , I have not yet found a good solution for listening to 192 kHz recordings from my phone, which prevents me from playing these shows in my car and on the go. I see that the 12/10/71 show is available at 96 kHz on HDTracks, which makes my wonder why the whole set is also not offered in that format.

I have the same problem, only discs 1 and 2 show up in the download from the order number. I sent them a message too. At least its not a resolution issue like we have seen before. I'm guessing they are going to send emails out with the full set, and that we jumped the gun on the downloads.

Does anybody know if you buy the digital download, do you get a pdf of the booklet? They really need to make this standard practice. For those of us who have completely gone digital, we deserve to read the liner notes.

Like everyone else I have only been able to download the 12/9/71 show. How about an update for people who purchased the digital version like the ones sent out for the physical set?

In the past two big digital releases (Giant's Stadium and the Spring 76 box set), there was no .pdf of the liner notes. On the other hand, the 24 bit recordings are pretty damned good. I'll make that trade.

This happened with the Giant's Stadium box set. It is really frustrating and made me realize that there is no need to buy these downloads ahead of time. Whoever is running the Dead store these days should just hire Nugs.net to handle download distribution like everyone else (LivePhish and so many other bands). Nugs.net has its act together and downloads are not one massive zip.file that can get messed up in transmission.

How broken is this process that everyone who pre ordered can only get 2 of the 20 discs but if you buy today you can get it all? I agree that they need to move this to Nugs. The Nugs system is flawless while Dead.Net is always challenging.

When will this be fixed??????

In my file set for 10/19/72 the Tennessee Jed is 44 kHz - 16 bit instead of 192 kHz - 24 bit, anybody else notice that?

And like others here I haven't been able to download 12/10/71 either.

And I want to second the request for digital liner notes. People don't opt for FLAC files over box sets for being cheap skates but because of space issues, environmental concerns or high-res, and should not be treated as 2nd class customers.

Sent a message to customer service and no service yet. I can't get this file to download in Chrome or Safari. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a Customer Service phone Number? Crazy that I ordered this the day it came out and Im unable to hear a note from the release on Friday. Its Monday and i'm still *patiently* waiting....

I also got the Unable to Expand error message when trying to unzip the FLAC files but used a 3rd party unarchiving utility (rather the ones built into the Mac and Windows OS) and it worked fine. This isn't uncommon with very large zip files and there are plenty of free or cheap options available for both operating systems.

I pre-ordered the digital box set on 8/12. I attempted to download the set on 10/1 (the advertised release date). As is the case with others, I was only able to download 12/9/71 show. I emailed on Friday. No reply. I emailed today (10/4). No reply. I have spent much much much money over the years on this site. This will more than likely be the last time. Complete bush league of a customer service department. Not even an acknowledgment from the business that they screwed up and when the problem will be fixed. Over $140+ of my money and no response.

I also attempted to download the set in FLAC format. The size of the zip file looked a little light. Low and behold, only 12/09/71 was in the zip file. I too have contacted customer support and I'm waiting. How hard can this be?

Hi, I am trying to purchase the FLAC 192 khz/ 24 bit digital box set. When I select the FLAC option in the menu for the downloads, the selection still shows ALAC for all four items selected. Anyone else have this issue.

Bought the FLAC files back in July, waited, waited some more, got up on the 1st excited for some new music only to be instantly disappointed. One single show was in my files, I chose FLAC files for the HIRES files not due to it being cheaper, what gives DEAD this happens EVERY TIME I BUY DIGITAL FILES, why oh why. AND AND how long does it take to add more files for download? reach out for help, only response is we are aware and are working on it, followed up this week, same response. Trying to be patient, but still

I was so excited to download this at first that I did not notice the missing download of 12/10 and almost bought the stand-alone show to complete the collection before I realized that I should have gotten it for what I already paid. I emailed customer service, but am just wondering why they are not using Nugs.net?

To be continued....

First time downloading box I did not get 12/10/71, and each of the other shows were missing the last tracks totaling per show 1, 2, 5, 8, 8 and 15. Also the 10-19-72 Tennessee Jed is 16/44. Got the email for the fixed download which has 12/10/71 now but it is missing the last 9 tracks and all other shows still missing same last tracks as before. Tenn. Jed still 16/44.

I pre-ordered all the shows in digital format but I was only able to download the concert of December 9, 1971. 2 discs out of 20! I wrote to customer service at dead.net. Answer: They are taking care of the problem and thank me for my patience. Without explanation and without telling me when I will be able to download what I paid for several months ago!

Been watching these comments with mounting dismay since the beginning of October! You would have to be nuts to try and download this package! Anyway, yesterday afternoon I thought bugger it! I'll give it a try..... So with much trepidation, I filled in the papers.... First Pleasant surprise, was given the option by PayPal to make 3 monthly payments of £45 each, a much more manageable sum than a one off payment o $180. Then I downloaded the 7 shows effortlessly. And No customs officer trying to get £80 off me..... Just listened to 10/17/72.... jaw dropping at 192/24!
BUY IT!!!!

50 years ago today…..

October 21, 1971
Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois

Set 1: Truckin'-Loser-Beat It On Down The Line-Tennessee Jed-Playing In The Band-Big Railroad Blues-Jack Straw-Cumberland Blues-Comes A Time-Mexicali Blues-“The Frozen Logger”-Cold Rain And Snow-One More Saturday Night

Set 2: Casey Jones-Me And My Uncle-Dark Star>Sitting On Top Of The World>Dark Star>Me And Bobby McGee-Brown-Eyed Women-Ramble On Rose-Sugar Magnolia-Not Fade Away>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away

Encore: St. Stephen-Johnny B. Goode

Deadicated to kcollins1974, musicnow, estimating prof, The Good Ole Grateful Dead, proudfoot, outpost, hbob1995, gfink, brianhahne, and Oroborous, just because…….

The constant chatter and tuning up lends this show a fragmentary feeling. However, that being said, the opening Truckin’ sizzles, the new material sounds good, and there’s a Dark Star AND a Saint Stephen. What’s not to like about that? And who else but a logger stirs his coffee with his thumb?

The meat of the show was released as part of Dave’s Picks 3 in 2012, if you want to hear the potatoes as well, check out the very nice complete Miller remaster. Hard to believe it’s been nine years since the release. Frankly, when it first came out I didn’t give it much attention, but over the years both of the Chicago shows have, in my humble estimation, appreciated nicely………

Underrated, underappreciated, and recommended….

Rock on!!!

Doc
It is my meditation all the day, and more than my meat and drink, to know how I shall make the Saints of God comprehend the visions that roll like an overflowing surge before my mind…..

All of these Box Sets I purchase both the CD set and the HiRes FLAC files. I load and listen to the HiRes and keep the physical box set for keepsake purposes. However the last couple of box set downloads were very painful to get from DeadNet, wrong resolution, files missing, lots of emails trying to get what I bought and finally weeks later to get my order straightened out. So this time I thought I'd just get the physical CDs now and order the FLAC files from another vendor and save myself the headaches.

Well very glad I did that because after listening to the CDs this box set is not worth the extra money to buy the HiRes. Only the '71 shows are decent sound quality. The 72 and 73 shows have so many dropouts, channels go missing, guitars go missing, Phil's base takes over a whole channel in many tracks. A few times they obviously switched from sound boards to an audience tape (10-29-73 - El Paso) that sounds as though it was hand held at the back of the arena.
Just a mess.

Buy the CDs for the collector's side of things, RIP them to digital and save your money by not bothering with the HiRes, these recordings aren't worth the extra money.

This goes on all the time with Deadnet customer service
Ordered the St Louis set digital down load
Got the singles
The 12/9 show
Paid my money
This being said
This is NOT the first time experiencing problem
With the Almighty Deadnet
I have contacted The Better Business Bureau on two previous orders
Why does it take extreme measures to get the situation to be resolved
Why is a crap shoot every time you order???
Actually I know the answer to this
You will wait
And wait
And wait some more
And maybe some more
And maybe
Just maybe you’ll get your order before the new year
That being said this rant is over
It matters little to Deadnet
Stay safe
Stay healthy
Be patient

So just digesting some of these and noticing somewhat odd transition, like a small cut, on this one and possibly 10/19 as well. Anyone else?

Admittedly I had a bitch of a time ripping these discs with iTunes to get on my phone, though this would not seem consistent with that problem as it is not likely only a few seconds off the end of China Cat would just vanish.

Also suppose that perhaps there is just an awkward transition in the way it was played, just need some confirmation from fellow experts. Much thanks.

I pre-ordered the ALACs on the day it opened up. To this point I have sent three emails to WMG and gotten a canned, automated response each time basically telling me that it’s “being worked on” and that they will provide an update when they are able. This hasn’t happened. These folks can’t even follow through on their own BS. I had a very similar experience when I pre-ordered the digital version of the Giants Stadium release.

I’m sad that this poorly run, mismanaged, C team of an organization has the responsibility of delivering GD fans their digital marketplace. WMG’s customer service team is whack. An organization of this size, delivering this service should spend some time and energy putting together an execution strategy and finding a way to deliver on it. At the very least - when they aren’t able to deliver on it, they should be able to handle the response in a way that provides relevant, timely, and impactful information to their customers.

Do better.
