Steamboats and BBQ, ice cream cones and Mardi Gras - are you ready to laissez les bons temps rouler with the "gateway" to the Grateful Dead? Meet us, won't you, in St. Louis for seven complete and previously unreleased Dead concerts that capture the heart of the band's affinity for the River City.

LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73 is a 20CD set featuring five shows from the Fox Theatre - December 9 and 10, 1971; October 17-19, 1972; and two from the Kiel Auditorium - October 29 and 30, 1973.

The seven shows in the collection span slightly less than two years, but they represent some of the best shows the Grateful Dead played during some of its peak tours. The music tells the story of a band evolving, changing from one sound to another seamlessly, precipitated – in large part – by significant personnel changes in the Dead’s lineup.

The two 1971 shows feature the original Grateful Dead lineup plus newcomer Keith Godchaux on piano. This version of the band would hold together for the next six months as the Dead embarked upon its Europe ’72 tour. By the time the Dead returned to the Fox Theatre less than a year later, they were without Pigpen, who’d played his final show with the Dead at the Hollywood Bowl on June 17, 1972. A year after the exceptional Fox 1972 shows, the Dead came back to St. Louis, but played the much larger Kiel Auditorium, touring behind the release of WAKE OF THE FLOOD, which came out just two weeks before.

All told, the band played 60 different songs during these shows highlighted by blazing romps through “Beat It On Down The Line” and “One More Saturday Night” and wistful takes on “Row Jimmy” and “Brokedown Palace” (whose lyrics give the collection its name). Meanwhile, the copious jamming ebbed and flowed like the mighty Mississippi River on multiple voyages through “The Other One” and “Dark Star.” Naturally, the band paid tribute to one of its favorite rock and rollers and one of St. Louis’ biggest stars by playing Chuck Berry songs at every show in the collection, including Pigpen galloping through “Run Rudolph Run.”

Each show has been restored and speed corrected using Plangent Processes with mastering by Jeffrey Norman. The collection comes in a slipcase with artwork by Liane Plant and features an 84-page hardbound book as well as other Dead surprises. To set the stage for the music, the liner notes provide several essays about the shows, including one by Sam Cutler, the band’s tour manager during that era, and another by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether, among others.

Due October 1st, LISTEN TO THE RIVER: ST. LOUIS ’71 ’72 ’73, is limited to 13,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from Dead.net.

    Ebay Prices

Seriously, does anyone ever pay those crazy prices for DaP's or any other releases? I look and laugh when I see those. I've only bought one (DaP #10, with the Bonus disc for $50). It's still my favorite DP. To move on, I really loved the Road Trip series. I only have 2, but they are the killers. Valentine's Day show from the Carousel in "68 and Big Rock Pow Wow, which is on this week's Tapers Section. So nice to hear China not go into Rider, among other surprises.

    What Amazes Me

Is that this thread is more or less dead.. yet the box set is not sold out and this has got to be one of the most far out excellent box sets to grace my front porch.

I get the feeling there will be much remorse when you can't buy this here and prices begin to reset on EBay.

I got an email from EBay this week asking if I was interested on 5/4/72 for somewhere around $450 used.. that was the original cost of the entire box set. Granted, this is not as good but the days of FW69 and E72 travelers box are behind us now.

Seriously, folks on the fence, get this. It's the real deal.

I don’t recall ever getting tickets in the mail separately from a Box (not including mail order).
But do recall that some Boxes came with tix.
I’ll have to check page 227.

Wilfred, I checked and did find ticket facsimiles in the Spring 1990 box, which I was referring to. After your post, I checked my 30 Trips box and didn't find anything. Then my girlfriend checked and found a ticket and a pass inside the book. I am reporting late, but I got a10/30/1991 ticket and a 6/16/1993 backstage pass. Probably just forgot about them. Thanks for shaking up the memory cells!

    Hey Now Nitecat

It was definitely with 30 Trips because I made a running tally of what everyone was getting in order to facilitate trades, of which there were several. I'll have to hop over to the show page to see if you reported any contemporaneously with the release itself back in 2015. I'll report back in a bit. Maybe you were snubbed? There were replica tickets with Spring 90 and also the Warlocks box, too if memory serves. But, the 30 Trips ones were authentic I believe, not replicas.

-edit- I just checked it out and indeed nitecat you did not report receiving any tickets or passes at the time. Scroll ahead to page 227 (yes it's pretty deep into the thread) to see the list. Just type in '30 Trips' into the search bar.

Funny I don't have any tickets with my 30 Trips, just a book and a scroll, but I do recall getting a little packet of tickets and back stage passes with one of my Spring 90 boxes. Don't have time to check which one right now.

I guess it’s finally the “top of the week.” UPS just sent me a shipping notice, with no further info about what it is or when it’ll be delivered, and even though Dead.net still just shows “processing” and “not shipped,” I’m thinking this is probably the StL box. So, if past experiences are any indication, it’ll take another 3-4 days for this one to leave the warehouse, and then 4-5 days to get to me. So the unboxing ceremony is probably 7-10 days out.

Which is fine. I was really hoping it’d be here this weekend, because my brother in law, a serious Head, will be visiting, and I was looking forward to being able listen to this set on a couple of longish drives we’re going to take. Oh well. It’s not like I don’t have lots of other shows we can listen to. We will get by.

Meanwhile, checking out some Kneebody, Bill Evans Live at Hilversium, the Meters Gettin' Funkier All the Time. I will survive.

Right now it looks like i'm scheduled to get the box saturday evening. Man, i can't think of a better time for that to arrive. Will have some beers on ice in preparation.

Also, i know it's not everyone's cup of tea but i also just confirmation about my Phish tickets for the MSG run at the end of the year! This week is off to a good start...

Just got a UPS shipping notice. It said it shipped out Oct 5th (although I just received the email a moment ago) & estimates it'll be delivered Oct 12th by 7pm.

For what it's worth, I'm in the Midwest. Well, finally seems like some movement based on other posts & my shipping notice.

Best of luck to all out there waiting for their Fox Box!

Check the comments on the page for the downloads.
As expected, Rhino screwed that up too, as usual.

It’s pretty dumbfounding that Rhino consistently fails at downloads. Definitely amateur hour in the Rhino IT department.

Billy.. I'll be by around 5:30. Pulled Chicken you say? I'll bring the Pliny, ayahuasca and some wine.

As for the digital downloads not working exactly perfect.. well.... Was anyone really surprised? They will make good Friday (give or take), my memory is not great but I don't recall them ever getting this right on the first try... , then again I could be wrong.

Either way, resist the temptation to take it out on Jebadiah. He's new.. a little bit shy but a super nice guy.

Jim, I'll be cooking ribeye steaks on the bbq, I usually crack my first beer in the morning. Cracking a beer at 9am and starting a bbq, is so much better then getting into my truck and driving off to work.

After years of getting things weeks after others (including most Dave's Picks), my box is here ahead of schedule.

I'm happy to report that she's a beaut. The shipping box is as thoughtful as always, and the actual box set packaging is stunning: the design is cool but still functional, and some very cool surprise goodies are tucked in as well.

As for size, it's like a smaller version of the Spring '90 box with the CDs loaded into the side of the box's inner shell. You guys are going to be very pleased.

Here in the Twin Cities we are fortunate to have a dedicated jazz radio station (KBEM--88.5 on your FM dial--streaming, too!), which is member-supported (yes, I donate). They have a bluegrass show and a jammy show (that DJ usually plays one Phish song each time), but mostly just play straight-up jazz. I listen a lot in the car when I am not making longer drives that warrant a 20-minute Playin' or some such treat.

Anyway, the other day I'm cruising around running errands, when suddenly, that beloved and familiar riff comes sneaking out of my car speakers: "Duh duh duh duhn . . . duh duh duh duhn . . . " Dark Star! The station was playing the new release by Dave McMurray, and at midday, nonetheless.

Yesterday's bike ride tunes: Schubert String Quartet No. 14 by the Juilliard Quartet, followed by disc two of DP 11 (9/27/72), the latter to prepare for the River box.

Also--started listening to my fourth show, 9/5/91, and the first set just kills it! I was lucky to have seen some of the summer and fall 1991 shows, as they really rocked my world. Is 1991 > 1990? :-O

p.s. Alan--glad to hear you got your box! Enjoy!

Great show! I was there. My 22nd Dead show I believe. The first night was great as well but that third show was epic. A very "jammy" night.

Unless it arrives a day early looks like this should arrive Saturday.

Still no shipping notice from Dead.net, but according to UPS, my 5.6 pound bundle of joy from Gnarlywood is a-rambling its way up north, having departed La Mirada, then paused overnight in the bustling metropolis of Visalia (because who wouldn't?) and is now supposedly destined to arrive here on Saturday. (Woohoo!) Although I will be hiking most of the day out at Pt. Reyes, so it's kind of less than ideal to have that package sitting on the porch for a few hours waiting for my return (d'oh!). But package pirates haven''t been much of an issue in my neighborhood (yet), so it's probably all good.

And to think I almost went for the download this time just so I could avoid all the shipping hassles, but now it appears I will have my seedies before our downloading brethren get their full measure of FLACS. Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills. Etc.

I just received a notice that the delivery for my box is delayed. Anyone else getting the same message?

There was some discussion early in this thread about how much would be charged to get the box into the UK. I think it was IANM who calculated it would be a little over 40 GBP. I’ve just had a request to pay around 63 GBP. Anyone else over here seen that charge yet? I’d like to hope it means they’ve used an expensive shipping route and the box will turn up quickly. Currently it is still in California. Well you have to pay for the music I suppose.

Edit: Interestingly I’ve just paid the requested fee and the UPS site tells me it will be delivered today by 2pm! I doubt that is correct but I hope to be proved wrong. Time will tell.

Edit 2: UPS have changed their mind. They are still saying by the end of today, but I think they’re just playing with me.

Colin-yes, I have just paid around £63.00 to UPS, too. The last email I had from them, yesterday I think, said it would be delivered today between 10.45am and 2.45pm.
I got "Light Into Ashes" delivered by regular mail yesterday, and wasn't asked to pay anything extra, which was a nice surprise. Haven't played it yet, as I was called out to lunch unexpectedly and didnt get back till late. Today looks like the day!

Was 10/10
Then 10/12
Now back to 10/10

USPS does in fact deliver packages on Sunday, they just don’t deliver letters.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon all deliver on my street pretty much every Sunday. I attribute it to Amazon Prime, and people buying more online.

Just paid UPS 868 sek( Swedish kronor), though as far as I can see, last tracking still puts it in California.

Colin/Dave,

UPS have a reputation for charging random costs on imports to the UK. The UK governments Import Duty calculator comes up with a cost of UKP31.67 VAT and UKP0.00 Import Duty based on the selling price of $215.97 and today's exchange rate. Add the UKP11.50 UPS Brokerage fee and you should have been charged UKP43.17 not 63.15. I have no issue paying the correct fees but a near 50% overcharge is completely unacceptable.

I've not received a demand yet but my box is still in La Mirada, CA waiting to be sent by UPS Worldwide Saver which has a 2 day delivery estimate.

er, the fox landed in Eagle, around 4:20 yesterday...
Ripped first three, listened to first show 12/9/71. The show is just good status quo 71 (in a good way), but nothing spectacular stands out, except for the hasty ending.
The sound is awesome though! Haven’t had time to do comparative analysis with earlier 71 multi track releases, but so far, this first show sounds great!

Ok, onto 12/10/71,
ROLLING!

I got the same message. First it was shipped, then it was delivered. Except it wasn't. Then it was backordered, and as of this am its being delivered again.

Somehow, everything i've ordered from dead.net has found its way to my front step, by hook or crook, eventually, so I hold some faith that this box will be no different.

Just wondering if any other Canadians that bought this box paid the taxes, when they purchased from this website and now have to pay the taxes again when UPS is taking across the border. Both times it has said taxes not duties or brokerage etc.

Received the box yesterday. It's a bit bigger than "get shown the light" box. It's interesting how the CDs/book are slot into the side of the inner box instead of the usual "open" style. Interesting goodies and book. Still on 12/9/71 and it sounds amazing! Individual show artwork could have been better though! Hope everyone will receive it soon!

Yes, I received an invoice from UPS this morning in my email regarding “Import Fees”. I think the last time I was charged this was for the 30 Trips box back in 2015, it’s always hit or miss. Anyways, I paid them - $43 - but no idea on where exactly the package is, or estimated delivery date.

We ordered our Box Set the morning it was available to order, and we still haven’t gotten a shipping Email yet. Apparently when you order, it has no impact on when you get the product which seems odd when dealing with a numbered limited edition release.

Granted, this is a rather petty issue when you put it in context with the grand scheme of things, but I just wanted to get it off my chest.

Thanks for listening.

Ianm - that's annoying. I am also reconciled to paying postage/duty/customs/whatever-at the correct rate. But to have the amount I have to pay randomley increased, by so much, is not on.

I also had my nose pushed out of joint today by the email from UPS to say the box would be delivered today between specific times. I dutifully waited in - and it didn't turn up. No update of the original message either. The next time I will be in all day will be next Tuesday, so here's hoping I can connect with them at some point.

On the good side - I know its not the forum for it, but while I'm here - " Light Into Ashes" vinyl is incredible! On every level - sound, playing, material. I wonder if this is the epicenter of the whole box-the moments that the shows from 1971 are moving towards and the ones from 1973 are drawing away from. It will be great to hear this music in the context of the show-and in the context of the box as a whole.

Jaysspacedhead - I indeed got hit again for the duties, taxes, etc. I just paid $49 to UPS because I don't know how import duties work and I just want this joyful noise so badly. But since ordering I moved from Alberta (where taxes don't exist) to Quebec (where tax is pretty steep), so I wasn't sure if this got factored into the equation.

Anyway, it seems to be "On the way" but I have no idea what that really means.

After briefly saying I would have the box set by the end of the day UPS changed back to saying it would arrive today between 09:45 and 12:45. It still says this despite it being 20:00 now. I really didn’t expect it to turn up since it was only shipped from California yesterday but why is the UPS info so wrong? They don’t usually deliver at the weekend but who knows. Let it arrive and let the discs work.

Love the show! First time caller. Long time listener. I see here in dead.net that my order has shipped (status since Monday eve), but no tracking info. No shipping email. Just a little nervous that my box fell behind a filing cabinet (do they have those anymore?). But hey it wouldn't be the first time an order showed up without a shipping notice.

I am just uber jealous of those who have received theirs is all. FOMO! Guess I have to stream 12/10......again!

They have this all f'd up. The light into ashes showed up in record time pardon the pun because ups delivered it. I think it is time the dead rhino figure out a way to allow us to choose shipping method. this ups surepost is garbage and way cheaper. I would gladly pay for expedited shipping!

Got my email notification last Tuesday I believe it was and it showed up today!!! Time to start ripping...cool little extras too...

Hey Twoswans,

I hear you and I am in the exact same boat. Order all releases on the first day available and never receive them on time. Still waiting for a shipping notification. You can't blame the carriers if it doesn't leave the warehouse.

Hope you all enjoy the box.
I am not sure if it is multi track, but I would be surprised if it was. They typically only brought that out for specific purposes.
For those that have the box, maybe they could shed some light on it.
