    BOTH bands were great
I have to disagree with the fellow who says the Who "jumped the shark" and became "bubblegum" here. The Who absolutely ROCKED! We had missed them the day before because my friend (who was driving) became a bit ill, so we left after the Dead's set. I was so glad we stayed for the Who on Sunday. Unlike the Dead, the Who played the "rock star" roles to the limit: Moonie somersaulting onto the stage, leaping onto his stool, and bashing out "Can't Explain" without pause; Daltrey doing the calf-roping bit with his mic cord; Townshend bouncing and windmilling the chords; Entwistle cool, calm, and solid in shades and a white suit and fedora. The energy of their performance was tremendous-- we were about thirty feet back from the stage and we could feel the intensity. The Dead were fine both days, but their music worked better in a smaller venue; Winterland was ideal for them. The Who had the massive sound and stage presence to take over a football stadium. Different bands, each great in their own way. The Dead were playing the soundtrack to my life at the time, and I loved them then as I've loved no other band; but I remember this day because of the Who.

I was there with my good friend and roommate from Marin, John Corson, and George Carlin who knew us came over to say hi. We had a good time. (not certain of the exact day, but it was the Dead with The Who, and some guy was yelling and screaming and jumping up and down over by the left speakers, in the audience) Music for the New Millennium by ARCHURE reg tmrk www.archure.net

My tenth Dead show. And second Who show (after the 10-9-76 one). I hung around after show and got to meet the Who (John, Moon the Loon, Roger, and Pete) as they were getting into their limo to leave the show.

I was totally fried from the day before. All I remember is how weird it was to see the Dead at 11:00 in the morning! Now that they have so many of the shows I was at out, I need to refresh my brain cells and see what they sound like with todays less functional but more discerning ears!

Saw the 9th and 10th shows, traded a pack of fresh Marlboros for a extra ticket I had (on the 10th, in line), guess it was worth it. But it was a disappointing day after the 9th, the Who blew up most of the PA the day before. It made the usual clean sound of the Dead hard to hear. That kept me from the 'Days on the Green', from then on. Oh and we left early, the Who turned our tribe off on Sunday(prerecorded tracks & noise) , and I was a Who fan in the 1970's.....hmm not sure why after that day.. Great Dead 9th show... Bear 2

for my frst dead show i was 15, on orange sunshine, and really there to see the WHO. The dead seemed SO weird to meat the time, didn't really get it. I showed up in 77 at winterland for my second show and was transformed.I missed very few bay area shows after that.

This male voice came outta nowhere to me, as I internally fussed about "wanting to dance." "F*($k it," he sez, "tell him you're getting a coke, and dance yo ass off." this was the first time i had danced publicly at the GD shows. I've never hesitated since.

This was my first show. I have been a Deadhead ever since. What a great band! Words cannot describe what they have meant to me over the years. I am extremely fortunate to be one of the gang. Deadheads unite!

This unfortunately, was at the time when The Who, jumped the shark, and became a bit 'Bubblegum'.I was there for the Dead, but was also a big fan of The Who in earlier years (as a matter of fact, my very first concert was The Who at The LA Forum, Who's Next Tour, 1972?) Anyways, The Dead played as the opening act, and blew the roof off the Oakland Coloseum (well, there is actually no roof on that staduim, but if there was, they would have blown it off! :). Following the Dead, came the Who. I don't remember exactly how soon into their show it was, but they soon played Momma's Got a Squeezebox, and it seemed as if about 1/3 of the stadium emptied, including me and my group that had come up from So. Cal. The Who may have had a bit to desire, but during this time period, the Dead were on fire!

Great show, but a weird juxtaposition for sure.... Best memory is standing in line to get in. There was this guy, a socialist/revolutionary type, walking back and forth along the crowd line, proselytizing. He looked like Allan Ginsberg, with the dark beard disheveled hair, and wire-rimmed glasses... but wearing a white t-shirt, cut off jeans, and half-laced army combat boots. He had a "mister microphone" type unit, and as walked up and down the line he balanced the speaker on his head with one hand, while holding the mic in the other. He was yelling things like, "workers unite", "don't be suckered by the Dead, they're dirty capitalists, they're exploiting you". And the best line was, "Jerry Garcia doesn't give a shit about you"... it was hilarious! We had an extra ticket, and I told my friends, "let's give it to THIS dude". And I remember my one friend's wife saying, "he probably won't take it", after all the shit he was talking about the Dead. So the next time he came by us, I offered him the ticket. He stopped, looked at me through his coke-bottle glasses, said, Thanks, man!" , grabbed the ticket, and ran off towards the parking lot to stash his mister microphone before catching the show... SO CLASSIC!!!!!!!

We were about 60 ft from the stage, just a bit to the left of center stage on the field. It was the most beautiful day, sun shining warm and the Dead started early in the day - and the crowd rose up and never sat down. It was dancing music right from the get-go. Could not help but move. the sound system was incredible. Massive speaker towers on each side of the stage, looked like custom speakers, no covers, made out of plywood. The sound was intense - cleanest concert sound ever, Jerry's guitar notes were like ice-picks cutting through, so clean - plenty of head room and dynamic range, every note crystal clear, and the finale, Johnny B Goode, was fantastic - the Who tried its own version of JBG and just did not cut it, but a worthy effort. First time ever, I had seen the 1st up out play, and out sound the headliner!
