    "5/12/91 for Tomorrow?" Sounds good.

Just a few last impressions from 11/18/78

The instrument/voice balance is definitely much better by It's All Over Now.

I think the thing that seems unusual about the Scarlet/Fire, other than the clean cut which may be a result of the Archive's streaming system. There's always a short loading gap between songs.

I was thinking that the jam at the end of Scarlet Begonias seems especially sparse, and then I started wondering where Phil was? There isn't a whole lot of deep bass in this recording, so that may be it. Not sure. I like Donna's off mic reaction to some strange noise that Bobby (presumably) made by accident. ...Ah, I got to the Fire patch. That's the cut that was mentioned. It sometimes feels a touch lackadaisical, but that sort of thing suits the transition into Fire.

Miracle is ON, right out of the gate. No teething problems with this one. Just struck me that it sounds like Jerry's already using some kind of distortion/fuzz effect on his guitar here. I'm a bit of a gear nut. I'm gonna hafta look into that.

Dayum. This Other One is waaay out there. Love it! The drummers totally running with it, complimenting the gooey, stretched out psychedelicized sense of time created by the guitarists with a frenzied lysergic background buzz. Still pre-Beast if I recall correctly, but plenty to keep the Rhythm Devils busy... and busy they are. Did someone say, "Go man."? "I knew you were about to come on."? This really is the beauty of the board tapes. Occasionally you get a glimpse into the verbal communication that goes on between band members. They're always talking to one another a lot more than I used to imagine. It wasn't till I started watching how much conducting Phil used to do that this aspect of their playing became evident. Things changed a lot when Phil started taking a less active role in the spontaneous orchestration during shows, I suppose.

Ollin Arageed, what a nice treat. A little hold over from the Egyptian Vacation. 12/19 is the only post Egypt '78 show I've got in my library, and sadly I couldn't tell you anything about it right now. From there it's to the Godchaux's farewell show, and then Brent's debut or somewhere thereabouts. Again, thank you for filling in this rather sparse zone in my listening experience.

The word I keep coming back to while listening to this show is "beautiful". I was about to use it again to describe the Wharf Rat. Keith is doing some really nice fill-in stuff between the vocals here. Certainly a sight better than his contribution at Giza (yikes!). .... oops... everybody completely missed Billy's cue to start the ending there. LOL. Oh, well. Carry on lads. :P

Love how the transition to Sugar Mag thoroughly cross fades. That's brilliant how they kept a bit of Wharf Rat alive while slowly letting Sugar Magnolia develop. A lot of times Jer'll drop the intro of the next song and the others just stop what they're doing immediately for a couple bars instead of letting the songs blend. Sometimes it feels forced when Jerry does it that way, but this one is just about perfect, for my ears.

One More Saturday Night was one of the more predictable Dead tunes, and I reckon if you were on tour it probably got kind of repetitive, but from a song-writing point of view, IMO this is one of Bob's best songs. It's the kind of built-to-be-a-show-stopper that I wish I could write someday.

Ok, fast-forward a decade or so to 1991!

Had a chance to stream the Miller sbd last night when I got home, but exhaustion prevented me from hearing it to the end. Early on the recording is so vocal heavy that I can barely make out what the band is doing without riding the volume control.

Me and My Uncle is in full disco mode. When was it that Bobby introduced it as a Polka? Was that before or after this? I'm confused. At any rate, it sure ain't a Polka here. I like these Rhinestone Cowboy versions, perhaps knowing that they aren't forever.

There were several comments about song placement, and that El Passo following Sugaree, and there having already been an Uncle > River seems a bit odd, but they had not yet settled into the one cowboy couplet per set routine yet, had they?

It's All Over Now in the first set, though. That feels odd.

From the Heart of Me is so beautifully done. I recall Jerry doing lots of really fast runs between vocal lines, but was not taking notes. This is a real gem.

By the time Music Never Stopped rolled around, I realized that the mix seemed to have been brought to balance between the vocals and other instruments. From the Heart of Me had also benefited from an improvement in this area. Music Never Stopped, though. Wow. This is where the show really gets started. I think someone else already mentioned that. The whole first set is superbly played, but as became the norm the first set closer serves as a precursor to the second set with some nice group improv. Definitely wanna go back to check this out again.

The Scarlet/Fire second set opener picks up right where TMNS left off. This is another track I want to return to. There seemed to be a somewhat different quality to this one, but at the moment I can't put my finger on it. Another highlight, but it's rare that this pairing is not a highlight.

The early second set Miracle is definitely another interesting set choice, as pretty much everyone already said. I kept an ear out for the ending jam that was mentioned, and yes, why was there never more of that? I suppose once it settled into its post-space rave-up role, there wasn't much left on the table to fool around with.

From this point on, I was drawn into the darkness of sleep. I think I'll restart this at It's All Over Now tomorrow and listen to the end again. The recording balance seemed to have improved by the end of the first set, and I missed the whole finale.

    Thanks for another interesting recommendation!

Nice call on this show Bluecrow. Really good sound quality and great show. Late 78 is so different than the rest of the year. Love these early Stagger Lees and I Need a Miracle. Nice Scarlet Fire. Great second set .Probably will be a while before we get any late 78 shows released, but I am ready.

Jim, yes, let's hit up some 91. Send us a pick.

Good to hear. I've been a bit busy lately and I thought I might have been careless with something I wrote.. so all is good with the universe.. a great way to start the week.

Missed the 78 yesterday, by late this afternoon I should be on track and have some free time. Not complaining though, I needed the and today will mark the 8th day in a row I've had river time. My listening has been heavily tilted to what was already loaded on my waterproof devices with a sprinkle of what they are pumping in the SiriusXM Grateful Dead channel. 1970 (Harpur and FE), 1972 - 1974, 84 and 85. Listened to a bit of 5/10/91 today in the truck.. I think we hit that one a year or so here. Definitely releasable, good quality audio and a good show. Perhaps we could hit another show from that run which includes Hornsby. The previous run, Cal Expo, was good also but alas.. it was sans Brucey.

In any case.. keep on keeping on the good vibes and good picks. Looks like we are off to a great start to the new week.

I first listened to this about time PITD was on the 11/24 video. Well played show, really nice sounding board even though its a couple generations down. There are a couple of poorly timed gaps (Fire, Olin Arageed come to mind.) What really perked my ears and brain up was the second set. Tasty Scarlet > Fire, and then that strange set placement of an early Miracle following that and wow Miracle has a blazing extended outro jam (where was that most of the time?) into a sweet He's Gone, followed by a pre-drumz Other One that has some crazy good space as it leads into drums. I really dig this show, this era, and it doesn't hurt that this was in the Uptown Theatre (hometown, though I was elsewhere at the time). Really hope the other two nights surface in similar sound quality and that the masters of this show don't have those gaps. Gotta run. Take care everyone.

I was reacting to a comment you made about how maybe you should be more descriptive... that comment was like weeks ago, though. I was tryin' to let ya off the hook, so to speak. :)

I'm gonna hafta catch up on these recent picks. Goin' out the door for a little overnight at the beach and there's no time to DL and update the ipod. My smartphone has no service, so streaming on the beach is out of the question. My only life line is a flip phone. lol. Definitely gonna be jammin' some Shakedown Street while tossin' a Grateful Mahalo frisbee in the sun, though. The pod is also loaded with Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy, Burning Spear, and Lee Perry. Lost another legend yesterday. Was fortunate enough to see Scratch on a tour with Adrian Sherwood. A bit too electronic for me, but still, it was Lee Perry right in front of me telling me to "put your gadget away" because I was holding my little digital camera on my shoulder tryin' to shoot some fragmented video. The camera was crap, though, so the few seconds I got just sound like noise. Anyhoo... no offense taken. No offense meant.

Can’t be wrong with those kind of recommendations!
I think I’ll jump off the Doc train and do a 82 twofer today.
Thanks for the additional voices and good to see good ole Marye, especially since the poor girl must be exhausted from hand delivering all those boxes, AND now a new Dave’s .weren’t we going to set up a go fund me to at least get her an ebike? ; )

EDIT: Phil shows. For sure, I’ve been meaning to catch more. Hopefully I can check some more out later on?
Streamed the 3 Colorado shows as well as the last Capitol Quintet show. Good sheet Mon! Not familiar with this lineup, though hear Niki is awesome!

DBL Edit: wow, just finishing up 5/23. Funny thing is I caught this, actually the whole run, probably from the same good folks who recommended it, but I didn’t write anything down, and a, ahem, being memory challenged ahem, I often
Remember I saw, heard, read something, but will forget what happened. My other half gives me a hard time about it, but I hey, this way I get to enjoy it all over again!
Anyway, glad I hit it again, really good show, 82, it’s like the new 81!
So I’m guessing that was an Angel adding the Harley to drumz?
So bummed we never made it to the Greek, or Frost, or Ventura, or a hula Vista etc, etc to see the boys.
Fortunate to have at least made it to Cal X and the Garbage heap, and hit those, as well as Veneta, Irvine, Ventura, and Irvine working Furthur 96, which was cool, but added to the disappointment of not seeing the Dead there.
Oh, same with the rocks: saw many great “after” shows, but sigh, no Dead, idiot!
Ok, going to catch up with RT 4.4.

stopping in to say hello to all the POTD friends - Hi everyone (been "busy")

def need to revisit DiP 2. As for that '82 thang Oro, look no further than DiP #32 Alpine 8/7/82 - I was "there" back then plus on a late night revisit a few weeks ago with the whole sound space open, a thing of beauty, what a gorgeous night. And that next night was out of this world.

picked up the discs from Dead&Co from shows I saw at Wrigley this past Sept and that's where my head and ears are at right now - night 2 and really digging Mayer's sound,

haven't had proper time for Listen to the River yet. Dave's 40 #23534 showed up yesterday and in the long queue

was playing a lot of Stepping Out in the truck. I always thought that Big Railroad from Skull and Roses was the "one" but I will say that the Big Railroad on Stepping has a groove, especially Jerry's guitar leads, that is also just exactly perfect.

sorta wigs me out in these plague times when some regular folks don't check in for awhile - comprende GOGD and Strider??!!

and once again - one of my "for the faithful" POTDs is 7/16/72 Dillon with the raw audience up front e.g. Cold Rain & Snow

Hey Bluecrow,

Yes, that show sounds good to me. I was actually looking at the show a couple of days ago.

And add Bolo to your list as well.

I gave it a go Bluecrow, a little rough around the edges for me.

yea its a pretty raw upfront, but the energy really captured me despite that. Coincidentally, ( or maybe not, it being the anniversary) I decided to give these shows a listen too. It must be a good few years since I played any of them, and I am well impressed. Very high energy-Jerry really standing out with that great sharp as a knife tone. The dynamics are so different for the pre 1975 years - more straight between the eyes, with the up tempo tracks coming off really well. Great guitar work on Estimated, and Lazy Lightning/Supplication too, though, which are more up in the air. This is 11/2 I am talking about, by the way.

Thought it would be fun to check out 3/19/90 Hartford. How does it stack up against our new #40? I think the last two years Dave is really releasing nostalgia picks, which is okay. He is the Captain. So, how about some 1988? At long last release the 89 Alpine shows.
It will be interesting to see what he does for #42. Will he continue the pattern of a 74/73/69/70 shows? Will he break the mold and completely surprise us with a 79 or 80 release?
I don't know, I don't think it will be 73/74.

Yes, I am still here.. Hartford sounds good and I have just finished a full decent listen of Dave's Picks 40 so there is some synergy there.

I really enjoyed Deer Creek. Very good sound for a two track, the credits Healy as the person who recorded it, but it's a big step up from the Ultra Matrix days. Most are siding on the second night being a stronger, more even performance. I guess I agree with this, the second set is very strong. I like the powerhouse opening for The Other One too.. Phil just thunders it almost from out of nowhere, then into a calming end of the world crescendo in Morning Dew. Perhaps I will comment on the 40 thread but the first night speaks to me.

Moving right along, there is another show that caught my attention last week that I want to hit. It's a new one for me. 1982-04-12 Nassau Coliseum. Not sure why this caught my eye, but I think it's worth hitting. After Hartford?

Then I do want to hit a few released shows that are both spectacular and have fallen out of my rotation. There are so many of these.. and I like to take care of my orphaned stepchildren.

I hope all are doing well in this mad, mad world we live in. I am very grateful for the escape and entertainment mechanism that is music, more specifically Grateful Dead music.

Be good all. Play Dead.

It was interesting to then go back to 3/19/90. Wow! This is a fantastic show. Great first set and love that second set with the Box of Rain, Foolish Heart, Playing into Eyes. Nice finish and you get a Brokedown Palace encore.
So, this show and the rest of the first box used the Cutler two track down mixes from the 24 track recordings. I think these were also used in Dozin at the Knick as well. They sound great to me. The sound is so full. I would like to know how this down mixes work? Does anyone know? They are definitely a different beast.

Just like any multitrack album or recording.
The studio engineer mixes, adjusts etc, the individual channels to get the right blend/levels between all the different channels (instruments, vocals, effects etc) and routes, pans or positions those individual channels in a stereo mix. Like JG coming more out of the right speaker and Bob outta the left for example. These signals are then routed to the final main stereo output of the mixing board, where the main output levels are set and recorded on a stereo or 2 channel device: tape, HD etc.
The studio mix is where individual eq adjustments, effects etc are done.

This final mix is then sent to the Mastering engineer who sweetens the overall sound or sometimes adjusts the overall eq so it will sound best on the physical product. LPs usually have specific eq curves applied to compensate and maximize sound for that format. If the studio mix was done very well, the mastering can be relatively simple, but often there is much more happening in mastering than people realize. All of this is truly art.

Appreciate the information on this process, Oroborous. That makes sense. I guess that explains why they were able to use Cutler's downmixes. They were that good. Recorded and mixed live by Cutler.

Loving 4/12/82. Still working my way through it. Good call Jim.

Edit. Finished it. Five dancing bears. Great sounding recording, even the last two songs that are audience patches sound good.
Start the show with an Iko Iko and finish with Satisfaction. Great Peggy O, Birdsong, Sugaree, Stella. Man, you would have to think this show is a contender to be released if Dave ever releases any more 82 shows.

Yes, that sounds like a winner to me. Never listened to this show, so I will get it going. Thanks for the pick Vguy.

I’ve always wondered about 5/7/78?
My cousin was going to RPI at the time. Now I’d normally doubt he would have gone to the Dead as he’s pretty conservative, (believe he was into the Boss then?) but hey it was collage and he was young so who knows?
I’ve always ment to ask him but rarely talk to him so I forget.

VGUY always finds nice off the path picks!

But first I’m currently spinning 4/12/82, which is nice. Brent laying some sweet jazz pi-an-ner down on this Bird Song as I eat my Bfast to a glorious Rocky Mountain morning.

Hit 11/12/71 on the Doc train last night. Short but sweet!
Then Tried to get 3/19/90 in. Does it count if you slept through half of it lol.
90, that is a year I truly need to dig deeper. Perhaps my biggest year and yet I’ve only been aquatinted with it.
Need to get nekked and roll around in the mud with her!

Ok, the list is getting daunting, hup hup.
4/12/82 spinning currently
5/7/78
11/14/71
11/15/71
and need to get back to St Louie, Louie!
Didn’t get much time with the 73 shows…..
Oh, and still have ideas Bluecrow and others contributed back aways that we never hit.

New one for me, I will queue it up.

I really enjoyed the last two picks.. 3/19/90 is rock solid and 4/12 was an interesting show. Perhaps one day we will have to hit Providence a couple nights later.

So where are we today? ah...5/7/78. And the beat marches on.

The elusive DHBHT. I take it you slept well last night.. might even wake up a bit sore.. What most people do not realize is how much training and deadication it takes to prepare yourself for a such a major accomplishment.

With a little training one can finish the Boston Marathon in a little over four hours. At best, a DHBHT takes almost twice that.

Good work, take the rest of the week off.

Time off, blasphemy!
The other half is working again today so though I’m getting a late start, I think I’ve got at least 2 in the tank, and at least the possibility of another DHB. Hey, have to get my fill on the weekends since no tunes at work lately : (
Probably try for 11/15/71, something suggested by BLUCROW, perhaps 9/25/81? from a few weeks ago, and then perhaps 10/29/73 as I’ve only hit the 73 Louie’s like once or twice, but in the blur of the overall box.
Onward!

Didn’t get the third one in yesterday. Was running outta time since I still had to watch Football, speaking of, GO VIKS! Lol Also was getting a little burnt after 7 shows this WE, needed a little Jazz.
Did enjoy Bluecrows suggestion of 9/25/81, another nice, long, solid 81. Think I’d still give tge nod to the next night, but I’m biased on that one. And of course the glory of 11/15/71. I know DV likes the sound of this one but I still hear parts that are oversaturated. Not like Dave’s 38, but it doesn’t sound as nice as the St Louie box 71s, to me anyway…
Curious DV, is your copy a GDP or aReal Gone? The one on my server is ripped from an original GDP, I have a Real Gone version still in the rapper, but didn’t think it was worth redoing etc?
I was going to hit 11/17/71 on the iPad at work, but remembered that’s a Dave’s, so I’ll have to wait fir a chance on the stereo.
Maybe I’ll hit1/18/78 off of Dave’s possible list?

Oroborous, I have the grateful dead productions release that I bought this year with the bonus disc after a kind soul on this site sent me an electronic copy and I was blown away. Had to have the original physical copy.
Listened again today and it is just crackling with energy and the sound quality to my ears is A++. I put this one up there with the three February Port Chester shows, as far as my favorites of the year.

Yes, hey the good old Vikes won one on the road. Look out.

Edit. 9/25/81, haven't heard this but you should read Miller's notes on this show. I cracked up. I won't ruin it for you.

After briefly being caught up, I am behind again. It's 11/15/71 for me today. I have a bit of a drive, which is perfect...

I did finish both DaP 40 and the St. Louis Box.. but I admit I need to give the two Kiel shows another spin. In fact, I don't think this box will begin to collect dust just yet..

Then hopefully.. I will become a more active participant again. I have a bit of work to do, then a small adventure of sorts, followed by a few hour drive and 11/15 will get it's time in the sun. We are approaching mid week.. hope everyone is keeping on keeping on..

No DHBHT for me today, but I am content with what I have. Be good all.

Life is such that it’s not a great time for lots of music. So trying to binge out on the WE.
All goood, just that time of year here, GO Time! But it affords an opportunity to cleanse etc.
hoping with the new year things will settle back. Hoping they’ll let me sit out at least part of the winter which means daily home binging lol.

Plus, though I’ve enjoyed riding the 71 Doc train, it will free up more listening time. And no, I’m not going to try for all of 72 next year lol.
I made it through first set yesterday of 1/18/78 off of Dave’s “list”. It was good but not so sure it’s one I’d hope for a release, which means he will lol. JG sounds pretty froggy still, which is weird as the next night I think I recall he doesn’t sound too bad? So going to finish 1/18, then?
DV: it’s not the overall sound that distorts? I specifically remember in SSDD or Sugar Mags when they get loud. Could be just the amps distorting etc, but I think the tape maybe over saturates a little on some if the peaks also?
Glad you don’t experience it! Somewhat common for those days.

My Dead listening has been pretty limited last little bit, primarily in the ride. So I'll load this up. Sorta under the radar DaP I think.

Gotta say that I'm still obsessed with board CD of Dead & Co 9/18/21 from Wrigley. So in those somewhat rare headphone listens back home I keep coming back to this. One of those shows that went straight to the heart and soul.

Spent last weekend out in the Henrys - first time camping since out there last Spring. It was real good.

Be well everyone.
