    September 10 - September 16, 2007
This week, as we roll toward the official start of Fall, we have 15 years of Grateful Dead history to cover, starting in 1972.

Our first track this week is the second set opening jam from 9/10/72 in Hollywood, featuring a well-jammed He’s Gone>Truckin’ combination. These two songs often segued into an Other One, but on this night, they left them together as a stand-alone jam, saving the night’s big jam for later in the set.

Next up are a couple of tracks from 9/16/72 at the Boston Music Hall, the second of a two night stand in Boston. Worth noting is that these two shows were scheduled to be performed at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, but the local authorities didn’t sound too keen on having the Grateful Dead take over their venue, so the shows were re-scheduled for Boston. From this second show in Boston, we have a very pretty, early Stella Blue, as well as the first set closing Playing In The Band.

Moving up a year, we have a very nice pair of tracks from the excellent shows at William and Mary College, with the first being a typically good 1973 version of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider from 9/11/73 and from 9/12/73, this nascent Weather Report Suite, complete with horn accompaniment.

Next up is some music from the Grateful Dead’s return to Madison Square Garden in 1987 after a four year hiatus from the venue Jerry famously called “juiced.” From the first night of the five night run, on 9/15/87, is this post-Drums sequence of The Wheel>Gimme Some Lovin’>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia and from the next night, 9/16/87, is the second set opening jam of Bertha>Greatest Story Ever Told>Devil with the Blue Dress>Good Golly Miss Molly>Devil with the Blue Dress>He’s Gone. Check out Jerry’s stunning vocal flourishes at the end of He’s Gone; truly some unique stuff. These recordings are drawn from the Beta PCM digital tapes.

Check in next week, when we’ll have some more great music for you. As always, feel free to write with questions or comments.

I wonder what these selections sound like
A wise sage named Garcia once said "Once we play the music it belongs to the audience. They can have it. We're done with it" It sure would be nice if this were still true.

Is there some way that these files could be made streamable for someone using a Linux operating system? I'm drooling at these songs and even though I can't put them on CDs (I guess that really does make sense and its OK) I'd like to listen to them.

1. Nice selections this week. 2. I wish that these would be released instead of just streamed. Why the lack of releases lately? At first Rhino was putting out good stuff but seems to have put the breaks on. It's already the middle of September and there has'nt been any new product since last December/January (excluding the Starbucks compilation disc). Theres enough material to put out a release at least once every 3 or 4 months.

Yep, looks good but can't listen to the stream since I don't want my comp infected by Media Player and certainly not itunes/Quicktime.... Guess I'll just have to listen to what I have... Thanks thought for all your hard work putting this all together....saw the Starbucks compilation and recognized alot of great music there....

Awwww, stop complaining about the good ol' days, when everyone was happy. It's just so much BETTER now, that we are under control. Why force yourselves into a needless stuper of relentless yearning for the way things were when everything was so easy & friendly. Be Devo'ed. It's fun to be resigned. Loose all will. There ya go, seeeeeeee how nice it is, now?

I noticed that at 1:00pm there were 17 pages of comments today, and now there's only 2 pages. Anyone who can stream the songs, can always just record the songs by plugging in a mini-disc, DAT, or cassette recorder to your soundcard. Trust me, it works......... It would be nice if more comments (like this one!) were kept online, and not removed like earlier today!

It’s probably a date thing. 17 pages on September 3d to the 9th, but when 'the clock struck one'...it's September the 10th. New material for some :-) Not accessible for others :-(

Since the organization has commercialized it's holdings (and there is NOTHING wrong with that by the way), I am pretty sure Rhino is not interested in having their business investment diluted with free mp3 downloads from great shows. It would have been refreshing to see the expressed reasons for eliminating mp3 files have some semblance to the truth. To call this area a "tapers section" and then feign disbelief that people were downloading free mp3's is a tad bit foolish ... come on .. let's see some character. It's ok, there's nothing wrong with what you are doing :) she's doin it right ...

all the "haters" bashing "3 from the vault" must not have heard the most bad ass version of EASY WIND! possibly the longest, most hardcore, most jammed out version of that song. They could have just released 2 discs of that EASY WIND over and over again and i would have still bought 4 copies. PigPen and Jerry tear EASY WIND a new one. To bash "3 from the vault" only shows that they truly havent listened to it. and the "haters" must have overlooked the stellar 11 disc complete fillmore west 1969 box set....yes 11 cds (including the bonus disc) of the most stellar GD shows ever. Every single note of a best ever run of GD shows from 69. I guess that wasn't enough.... I'm still reeling over these 2 releases alone.....but the best isn't good enough for the "haters"

Hey! Nice stuff. You could post one of those early 70's Playin tracks every week and I'd love each one. I really love counting 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,4 along with that tune. It also seems that the streams are working better. I still can't listen at work, but it seems like the streams are improving as my older laptop is playing the tracks now. | I'm just a, well...porpoise. |

First of all I thought last week’s offerings were among the best ever and this week’s not far behind…..really..so thanks! . Also a tip inspired by David’s commentary last week: if you pretend that all the buffering pauses that occur during streaming are in fact tape flips, then you will feel much less aggravated by the whole process!! Now on to the serious business. Focus group discussions conducted by RICHER DONORS with their target demographic have revealed that potential consumers are significantly uncomfortable with the word ‘Dead’. It has therefore been decided to re-brand the band as ‘The Grateful Passed’ or for short ‘The Gratefuls’. This of course leaves the problem of what to do with the word ‘Deadhead’, especially given the current rebellious mood. A special committee consisting of distinguished retirees Donald Rumsfeld and Margaret Thatcher (for she still lives!) has recommended that DeadHeads be renamed Grate-Heads (G-Heads for short) and that if we will accept this and achieve the following BENCHMARKS for our conduct on this website, we should be rewarded with the RETURN OF THE MP3s!!. 1. No taunting of RICHER DONORS its staff, consultants, partners or owners (we can badmouth eachother as much as we like) 2. No more whining, whinging, bitching, moaning, griping, bellyaching, cry-babying, groaning or other inappropriate expressions of ingratitude. 3. Ceding of rights to the words DEAD, FECK and ENTITLEMENT and their derivatives to RICHER DONORS 4. No more not-very-subtle clues about how to get stuff for free. A special hotline will be established for reporting illegal activity; informants will receive a free SIRIUS Receiver. 5. Appointment of an UBERMODERATOR to ensure the current mods stop being so damn nice 6. No more quoting of Grateful Dead lyrics out of context in order to support spurious arguments. 7. Acceptance of new message screening software for detecting and removing sarcastic comments, ironic or satirical observations and bizarre fantasies used as a way to get round Benchmarks Numbers 1 and 2 Should we let that Deal go Down ? (ooops!) My hope is that achievement of just a few of these benchmarks might eventually be considered a success....... ;-)

Good day all! I've enjoyed the China>Rider from 9/11/73, along with other snipets from the past. The sound thru Windows Media is reliably good. Looking forward to more treats from fall tour stops in 1972 & 1973. Having hundreds of hours of shows on cassettes, DAT's and cd's, streaming and listening is just fine with me. Thanks for the chance to listen!

I recall seeing lots of tapers get their dats confiscated (but not their equipment) for taping where the band had not invited them. Jerry's crew, with guys like Parish, were the toughest; they would stand on stage with binocculars looking for tapers. They were all very friendly, as far as that part goes, taking an interest in your gear, etc., but even back in the day, no one ever said 'Anything Goes' They still retained rights over how the music got out there.I think we are pretty damn lucky to have as much music as we do. In fact, I think the whole damn scene is pretty lucky to have as much freedom as it has. And I think David does a great job of getting new renditions and stories out to us.

as for the 11 disc complete fillmore west box set....it was a LIMITED EDITION. I ordered mine the day i saw it advertised for pre-sale. thats what Limited Edition is all about. In fact i ordered two and gave one to my brother for a birthday present. When something says LIMITED EDITION of 10,000 you dont wait around for 6 months contemplating if you should buy or not buy. Anyone who knows anything would have seen the red flags go up...fillmore west 1969 = greatest run of GD shows possibly ever = don't think just order. there is however, the mini box set still available. Everyone was given the opportunity to do the pre-order...something to think about for the next LIMITED EDITION release. "aint no time to hate, barely time to wait"

I got the 11 disc Fillmore Set too, # 9758. Almost missed it.Be prepared for Rhino to possibly have limited edition also. They do it with other artists, but none of these have the base the Dead too, so we will see. And most of the Rhino limited editions are not reissued. So if it is limited act immediately. I have more than a sneaking suspicion that there is going to be some really great Dead coming out from Rhino. It is hard for me to believe all the impatience shown. Remember there were years in the 80's when nothing came out from the band. But there were all these great tapes flying around. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

It's a sad thing that a few little computer heads had to be spoiled by the use of FREE. I personally ride a bike to and from work everyday. The MP3 downloads were a blessing. David, I only know you from these media things and think your doing the right thing. The world is forever changing, and we all have to change with it. I disagree with much of the Grateful Dead's political ideas, but love the music. I hope that all the thinking caps are on over there, and you all will figure out a happy medium for everyone.

Still no answer about the biggest money making whores (Rhino) demanding these songs be pulled for download. To those giving their righteous response of us so called "freeloaders" as one has posted. Think about archive and all other sites. What is the reason to stop something like this. Should Gans stop dead hour too? I stand by my decision to F** Rhino and I will NEVER purchase anything from them.

Today for the first time I attempted to listen to one of the links since the initial format change. When I first tried weeks ago to access the music, I found it impossible to do, It wouldnt work and honestly I was kinda miffed and I didnt put in much effort. Before the change, I would load the song and stream it direct to my stereo aross the room and get up and do my house chores and jam out. Well, the Bertha>Greatest was just too hard to pass up. So I loaded up the new quicktime and made it work. I had to click on the link then load it to stream, and of course I cant stream it to my stereo (not sure why) so I had to get my lazy ass up walk across the room and plug it in direct...but hey it worked! The boys are ON this night. The Bertha is unreal as well as the Hes Gone....and the rest? Well theres enough energy there that to say they were juiced is by far an understatement. Thanks David--good job. I get the impression maybe your between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, you are trying to satisfy our tastes, which as a deadhead, I know is impossible. And on the other you are trying satisy your bosses who would like a return on their investment. On that, I have to say, I think they are realizing this is prob more of a pain than its worth. Didnt Rhino ever hear the saying "Never Trust a Prankster". The boys are pirates and always will be, and they sold Rhino a beached ship and Rhino is starting to realize it. My point is theres nothing much left to sell or market. Sure maybe I want to buy a sticker here or there, (although Im still to paranoid to put in on my car) but I have hundreds of gigs of dead on my external hardrive, alot of it amazing quality, why would I buy anything from Rhino? Therefore why should they give any more of it away? "If you aint got a hinge you cant close the door...you cant close the door when the walls caved in!" The door to alot of the vault is wide open in this day and age...thats not to say they David doesnt have access to some real gems though that I have never had the opportunity to buy...and that I just might. The one thing that is really missing on this board is a intellectual or spiritual or historical conversation about what David is posting. There is alot going on in this music my friends...and with David posting every week it would be really cool for us all take a listen and discuss whats happening...How the Eyes intro has changes...How this Scarlet Fire was a off year for a Scarlet but this one was amazing...etc etc So it is what it is folks. I dont need to remind you that Jerry is dead and he was the ONLY one in the band with a sense of humor. "You get what you come for, youre ready to go"
