18,000 happy Dead Heads could not be wrong. Deer Creek, my how you deliver.

We're closing the books on DAVE'S PICKS 2021 with not one but two - nearly - complete shows from Noblesville, IN 7/18/90 & 7/19/90. Yes, we've packed it all on four CDs, save for that second night encore which we promise you'll get to hear in the very near future. Sometimes there really is just too much good stuff.

For now, we'll invite you to cozy up with two exceptional back-to-back shows, shows with precision and clarity, shows with more than a lion's share of exploratory jams, and most importantly, shows that were simply a damn good time for all. Highlights from night one include the bookends of a spectacular "Help>Slip!>Franklin's" and an epically intricate "Morning Dew" followed by a classic cover of "The Weight." Night two, is the sleeper hit, with flawless playing from start to finish, the set list inviting you to find new favorites in top-notch renditions of "Foolish Heart" or "Victim Or The Crime," and if that's not one of the finest versions of "Desolation Row" Bobby ever did do! We would be remiss if we didn't mention that these shows were among Brent's last and they are some of his finest of the era at that.

Dave I got your Spook Tooth album, so stop looking.

All my 'original vinyl fill a 12 foot shelf in closet, all cds are in banker boxes in closet. All my 45's are in sleeves in drawers of a dresser. Dead box sets on book shelves in office. My latest "limited" vinyl purchases have gotten a shelf in office,,,, but it is damn near filled and will need to start a new shelf when the Joni Mitchell box gets here, or and the JGB box, or and the DaP 1 vinyl. All storage is environmentally controlled.

That is just the physical collection, the digital collection is on a 10 TB internal HD, with all backups to external drives that are only plugged in for backups. I store by artist name, artist are filled with albums, albums filled with songs. I believe I am well over the 600,000 tune mark.

I think as myself as the librarian, I don't read all the books but I keep them in order and dry!

#40 Feels and 2021 Cheers

My Daves #40 showed up last night and I was able to get through disc 1 - its bittersweet to me already. This was my era. I was a sophomore in college in 1990. Brent was the guy for all my shows basically and this release gets me in the feels because they were so consistently good during this run and Brent's sound is so sweet and so integral and so in tune with Jerry. Getting a spot under stage left was always the goal because the interplay musically and just in "vibe" between Jerry and Brent were the best of fun to watch up close. But being the penultimate Brent shows makes it bittersweet. Aside from a few bright spots here and there - or with an outside spiark from Branford or Clarence Clemons to inspire them - the post Brent the sound feels somewhat lost to me. So these shows are a treasure to me. I didnt attend them but I saw the bulk of my shows from 85-90 on the west coast - so these are some great shows to represent the overall peak of this era. Cheers to Dave and company for the bonus 4th disc on this release and cheers to a really damn solid 2021 - some great Dave's, the St Louis box and Light into Ashes lp, some really good JGB releases, the Paris 72 Record Store Day releases (epic) and still to arrive? Garcia 17 and the Garcia 30th delayed RSD release. For me - that is a seriously beautiful bundle of sonic love in 2021 that will be hard to top - but UI cant wait to see them try!!! :)

It's a mess

I have CDs, LPs(12" & 10") 45s, 78s. The Dead is together, but in no specific order... Got shelves for Motown and R&B, Country, 50s R&R, Latin, international pressings, none of them in any kind of order; then 60s/70s Rock, again all mixed up. I roughly know where everything is, but just yesterday it took me a long time to find Caravan's For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night.

Don't go in the attic

Like a lot of people of my generation, with my sort of problems, I have literally thousands of recordings-starting with L.Ps - first one in 1971. My Dead L.P.s, and solo projects on vinyl-Kingfish, Dig Rhythm Band etc are in two L.P. cases in the attic. Not stored in any particular order. Near them are a few flat suitcases piled one of top of the other that are crammed full of tapes of shows-these are mostly in date order.
One From The Vaults through Dicks Picks and standalone releases are in a cabinet in date order. Next to these are the Road Trips series in no particular order. Thats in my dining room.
Dave's Picks are all on a book case in order of the date they were released-in my bedroom. These FM releases are dotted about here and there - and I have a cardboard box full of shows someone has been kind enough to download for me off the internet.
The L.P. vinyl boxes that have come out in the last year or so are spread about downstairs and in the attic. Box sets of cds are all over the place.
Obviously, I don't just buy Dead music...and as I very rarely get rid of anything, I have zillions of cds and L.P. from all sorts of artists from the 1920s onwards-not filed in any particular order. Blues and jazz are mainly together. As are my collections of Hawkwind, Gong and The Cramps. They are all over the place-in racks, in cupboards, in my wardrobe. I can usually find what I am looking for.

Having said that...I do smetimes wonder where that Spooky Tooth album got to.

I forgot how great that China>Rider was. Brent really brought some great playing into this combo in the latter days and this one really shows him at his peak. So sad it was gone days later. I have a memory of hearing that transition jam after a show blasting from a tapers audio system in the lot at the Omni that spring and I felt the band was really hitting their professional peak as an ensemble. Very powerful.

I never got to experience the first 13 years of the Dead's live set in person when many of these songs were fresh in their repertoire and in some cases still evolving, but I think the last few years with Brent and into '91 was one of the great era's. From my layer in the game fandom, it was pretty much better than most things going on in the music world at the time.

The first show first set the band played well and really picked up steam during Masterpiece. That's one of those songs that are usually consistent in execution but this one has some power behind it. Peggy-O was relatively rare but always well played. LLR is exceptional. Terrapin>Jam. A perfect second set.

I caught the next two night after these shows. At the time I was oblivious to what was going on behind the scenes and whatever Brent's struggles were, though that version of Far From Me was offsetting. Those shows were still well played and seemed the bands trajectory for new realms of greatness was unstoppable. We ended up having to miss the third show and Brents last and sell our tickets as a work conflict came up. That year I caught 7 shows. Three in Atlanta, two at Tinley Park and two at Compton Terrace with Bruce and Vince. Those show were also excellent. That second show seemed to continue the upward trajectory of musical growth and inventiveness with Bruce and his grand piano in the mix.

A few weeks after the Tinley Park Dead shows I caught my first Allman Brothers show. The Warren Haynes, Allan Woody, Johnny Neel line-up touring in support of the Seven Turns album. That show was epic and say the same night Stevie Ray Vaughan died on sacred ground at Alpine Valley. 1990 was truly a year of the best and the worst.

I very much appreciate the variety in the releases, in that we're getting shows from the entire 30-year run. Got my DaP40 on the day it was promised me, on the first Day of the Dead.

You Enjoy MyShelf: The 3000-CD rack in the living room is already spilling over with rock, jazz, blues, and classical, so the GD get their own CD rack in the guest room, and the walls there are covered with Dead posters and Dead art. (yes, I'm married, but my wife is happy that I love music so much) The officially-released GD shows are all in chronological order (boxes rest on the floor next to the rack), as are the JGB releases, but the JGB discs have their own section. The rack also houses the GD DVDs and music videos by other artists (Joni, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Roxy Music . . . ).

Official releases chronological by release date, therefore, all Dick’s RT’s and Dave’s in numerical order. Unofficial releases, chronologically by show date. Box sets, like Jim, anywhere they fit. Not much on digital releases, just old fashioned(see:old) I guess.
If I can’t hold it, I don’t want it. Just call me the dinosaur. 30 days……one of many yearly highlights(yes, I download, and then create a series of cds, grouped only to please me.

In retrospect this show suffers because it came right before the behemoth December 10 show. The first set is strong and has heartfelt versions of It Hurts Me Too and Black Peter. The second set is, well, short, but well played, and there’s no encore.

I thank TPTB for its official release………

I dug out "Let it be...Naked" the remix minus the Spector additions last night. Very enjoyable.

Thinking of John reminds me of the San Bernadino show 12-12-80 I attended days after John's death. In the second set, the band performed a heart-wrenching 'He's Gone', very touching.

Sad news. He will probably be more respected for his solo career than the records he made with The Monkees-but I am not familiar with the later stuff. I have aways like those Monkees singles, though, and "Porpoise Song" is a psych classic.

for DaP 41 in January. Had already forgotten the date so had to go back to the Seaside to be reminded. Baltimore 5-26-77 is my happy zone era but I don't want to spoil it by hearing it first on the Archive. So any opinions and superlatives? Dave seemed very high on this one putting it as one of four possibilities for DaP 1. One early DaP 40 post mentions the missing U.S. Blues encore as one of the better versions so glad it's getting on a CD quickly even if difficult to play in succession. Thanks and cheers!

Is there a Dead Head in the house?.....

A man goes to a pacific island for vacation. As the boat nears, he notices the constant sound of drumming. As he gets off the boat, he asks a native how long the drumming will go on. The native casts about nervously and says "very bad when drumming stops."

Later that day, the drumming is still going and it is really starting to get to him. So, he asks another native when the drumming will stop. The native looks as if he's just been spooked. "Very bad when drumming stops," he says, and hurries off.

After a couple of days with little sleep, the man has had enough. He grabs the first native he sees, slams him up against a tree, and shouts, "What happens when the drumming stops?!"

The native replies, "Bass solo."

Anniversary show 12/12/81 Fiesta Hall

40 years ago today, I was at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds to see a benefit show called Dance for Disarmement. It was billed as Joan Baez and friends, Garcia & Weir were the only friends mentioned. The Dead backed Baez with an acoustic set, and then came out and played a great electric set. It was a very small venue,( Fiesta Hall), probably only 1 thousand people there.. I see Strider was there, anyone else make it there? Anyway, we all had a blast!

Speaking of Bass solos

When I saw Garcia & Grisman play at the Warfield Theatre, Grisman's bass player James Kerwin, did a killer bass solo on the song Arabia, really a knockout! The shows were super special, and should all be released.

Yeah, I saw them do that song, the band was on fire, Garcia was really on top of things, playing as good as he ever had; then they ended the show with a knockout version of Ripple, with two mandolins, just like American Beauty.

Vguy, saw your L.A. Woman 50th post. I got into them on FM radio growing up, then bought that double CD Best Of The Doors. Then the movie came out and they were huge in the early 90s on my college campus (and others I'm sure). Cover bands were all over the place - remember being drunk and stoned at The Flying Club watching a band do a good cover of The End. Anyway, I was watching a documentary on L.A. Woman a few years ago and discovered the song Hyacinth House, which was neither on my double CD nor an FM radio song. Wow. How that song was publicly ignored, I cannot guess, but IMHO it's better than a lot of tunes on that Best Of CD. Peace Frog from Morrison Hotel too, though a buddy of mine had that CD, so I didn't miss out on it.

Is it just me? I have listened to this show 203,842 times (yes, I kept track) and it never fails to deliver. Inspired, intense, intoxicating, occasionally even baffling. How did they do it? Why did they do it? Who did they do it to? How many young minds were blown on this evening of delights? For me this show has attained mythic status……….

Dream like, yet firmly grounded in the reality of rock and roll. Rocking, yet soulful. Creamy smooth, yet nicely edgy. Psychedelic, yet country. Greasy, yet jammy. All Dead things to all Dead people………..

For 1971, this is the complete live Dead package. Highly highly recommended!

I was traveling in a jet from Florida to Washington. We had a stop in Chicago. I had had half of...something ;))) for the ride. We flew in to Chicago. I had 12/14/71 playing in my cassette Walkman. Looking out my window, the sun lit up the towers of Chicago...

Jonah as Jerry?

So, in today’s edition of “Is this a real news story or something from The Onion?” I see it’s been announced that Jonah Hill is going to portray Jerry Garcia in a new biopic to be directed by Martin Scorsese.

Assuming it’s true, I suppose it could be good. Scorsese has directed some of my favorite films and Hill’s not a bad actor. But man, there are a lot of ways this can go sideways. Can you imagine trying to cram an accurate representation of Jerry’s life into a 2-3 hour movie? Trying to recreate the Acid Tests on film? I hope they got a really good screenwriter.

In other news: my credit card took a beating this morning, as tickets for the TTB at Red Rocks went on sale. No sooner had I secured the ducats (further back than I’d like, but not too bad) than I got a message from Real Gone saying there were selling a limited edition vinyl version DiP 19, which I felt obliged to order. (Still kicking myself for not grabbing their vinyl of DiP 36 when I could, so I had to pull the trigger on this one.) I owe, I owe, so off to work I go … but at least I’ll have some good music.

As for the Scorsese movie, I am keeping an open mind but agree.. it could go sideways. Hopefully they pull it off.
