One more Saturday night at Winterland! Yes, we're back to home base for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 42, the complete show from Winterland, San Francisco, 2/23/74. The one that featured the earliest amalgamation of what would soon become the Wall of Sound, the one that is so "loud, clear, and defined," it's been ripe for release for quite some time and we're glad it's finally getting its due.
First set or second, there are no wrong answers here. From the unique show opener of Chuck Berry's "Around And Around" and an incredible "Here Comes Sunshine" that would then disappear for 18 years, to a medley of WAKE OF THE FLOOD tracks - "Row Jimmy," "Weather Report Suite," and "Stella Blue" - cementing their status in the canon and an unstoppable hour through the classic 1973-1974 Dead that is “He’s Gone”>“Truckin’”>“Drums”>“The Other One”>“Eyes Of The World,” it's all exceptionally hot.
Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE’S PICKS VOLUME 42: WINTERLAND, SAN FRANCISCO, 2/23/74 was recorded by Kidd Candelario and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.
Shipping Tracking
Hate to see you suffer, so...try this - my tracking number starts with "927...", if yours does also then it is probably a USPS tracking number. Copy the tracking number, go to the USPS tracking tool online on the USPS site, and paste the tracking number into the space provided. This works for me and shows that my order is moving steadily to my location, maybe it will work for you. Note that this is using the tracking tool on the USPS official site, not a search engine tracking tool.
Thanks Charlie 3 ……..
Tried it. Unfortunately it doesn’t work for me :-(
Just give it a few days,…
Just give it a few days, once they process it will show
shipping update
looks like 42 made it a couple of states away. Might get it tomorrow or Monday. Vinyl shipping label printed - looks like end of next week.
Full Moon Fantastickal
Good article on Gong in this months Shindig! magazine. Which led me to discover an amazing 7 minute clip of them live at La Vielle Grille Club in Paris-filmed in late 1967, and shown on French T.V. in April 1968 by the looks of things. Never ceases to amaze me, what shows up these days.
Batter Up!

Moving To Fontana Soon...
To be a dental floss tycoon. No wait, that's Zappa.
Tracking actually said something today.
42 left Fontana today, 5 days after shipping notice.
Here Thursday it says.
Gonna be a good one.
Warming up with DaP13 on Wed. to feel like I went to a two night run.
Feeling it for all the wounded warriors here. Took a digger and landed on my head backing over an unseen boulder. Heard like 5-6 vertebra pop hard. After a minute of collecting myself got up to find that Bumbles Bounce! Cannot believe all I had was a stiff neck, torn pants and a bruise that looks like a 6" purple/green paisley on my leg.
And so it goes...
Let's be careful out there. Humming Little Feat's Old Folks Boogie as per Oro.
Cheers!
Edit: DaP1 vinyl ship notice on 4/28 but still only label created.
Bumbles Bounce
Ha!
You guys are mostly older than me, but my body hurts too. So it must get even worse.
I need to exercise more now…
Nappy,
4-17-69 was released as Download Series 12. If you have that, does the new Miller sound better?

The jam is awesome
The rest of the show is fine
Today disc 3 of 5 7 77
Gonna get out 5 8 77 and 5 9 77
4 17 69 is that the one where Jerry says something like "you're not made of sugar"?
Non GD
13th Floor Elevators bull of the woods
David Bowie lodger
Beatles sgt pepper
Stalag 13 in control
Tangerine Dream title forgotten; it has a blue cover with a water drop (I'm pretty much a TD virgin...i heard one disc long ago but didnt explore further at the time)
@ICECRMCNKD...
Thanks for the reminder on the Download series...Vol 12 does sound better than the Miller...fuller sound...if 12 didn't exist the Miller would be more than adequate though...after the band quits on "Caution" because of the police, Vol 12 has ''The Eleven & Dupree's' from an Avalon Ballroom soundcheck on 1-23-69 as a bonus...again thanks for the Download reminder...gonna give those a listen over the next few days...
Song the Dead didn't play enough
The Dead didn't play Attics of My Life enough ; the song is a gem. I only saw the Dead play it once. I wish that the Dead would have brought it back and played it durring the acoustic portion of the 1980 Warfield shows.
Tangerine Dream
Proudfoot - that sounds like "Rubycon", released, coincidentally, on Virgin. The one before that "Phaedra" is probably their Sergeant Pepper. "Return To Hades 1973-1979" is a fantastic box set -as is the more experimental "Pink Years 1970-1973"box. It gets a bit bland after that - but those 70's cds can take you off the planet. Probably best to get the individual cds enclosed in those boxes, actually.
Billy - I think "Attics" is one of their best songs - but my favourite version ( of the few I have heard) is the one on American Beauty. Same with Box of Rain.

GOGD Boston 6/11/76 I've decided to re-explore the June 76 box. Pretty cool Sugur Mag>Eyes>Stella Blue>Sunshine Daydream.

Garcia, Crosby, Kaukonen, Lesh, Casady.... PERRO Sessions Jan 13-14, 1971 SBD
Recorded during the same studio and time period as David's solo album.
It's here!
Based on posts here, seems to be some question as to the track list of bonus disc. So wanted to share it here. Here goes:
1 US Blues
2 Brown Eyed Women
3 It Must Have Been the Roses
4 Black Throated Wind
5 Loose Lucy
6 Playing in the Band
7 Ship of Fools
8 China Ca Sunflower>
9 I Know You Rider
10 Uncle John's Band
Just popped it in while typing this. US Blue is starting off a little shaky. Starting to find it's groove a few minutes in.
All told, this bad boy is 79 minutes! Cant' wait to hear more!

Re: Bonus Disc
I am surprised to see the first set material, especially if U.S. Blurs starts slowly. I would have preferred Brokedown Palace and Wharf Rat. Maybe even a 2nd go at Eyes of the World. Just sayin'
I have filled all of my Europe '72 gaps. There is a lot to be said for the sound quality of course, but they play flawlessly every night. They seem to carry that through 1972. I never realized it until recently, but Donna doesn't really sing that much on this tour. In the second half of 72 she begins to get involved on a lot more songs. For E72 she is only on PITB, GSET, GDTRFB, and SMBH. Of those 4 PITB was the only one they did every night. 2nd half 72 I hear her on many more songs.
Go USPS!!!
42 is currently sitting in Flagstaff...should be here tomorrow...whether it's the Subscription one or the ala carte one I don't know...they usually arrive together though...we shall see
Bonus disc choices
The US Blues, Ship of Fools, and Roses are included as they were all debuts. I also would always want an available Wharf Rat, but I get the thinking behind getting out the debuts, plus that will give us all 3 Ship of Fools from the 3 nights, which I am happy about. After listening to Dave's 14 3/26/72, I put on the Jam> Ship of Fools from Dave's 34 6/23/74, spectacular stuff. Dave's 14 is still a top 3 Dave's for me. That whole second set is just unrelenting.
bonus disc picture
For those subscribers awaiting theirs, I changed out my thingy to the picture on the front of the bonus disc.
The 1st time I saw it, I thought the picture was pretty cool. I'm no pro at taking such pictures, but it'll hopefully give you a sense of it.
Waiting, waiting
UPS says my Dave's should arrive Thursday.
Listened to 6/11/76 again today, wonderful stand alone Scarlet in the first set, and a great second set St. Stephen>NFA>Dancing'>Music Never Stopped.
9/26/91
A great show and another request here for the the Norman. The whole Fall '91 your was great right from the opening run at Richfield through Boston.
My copy of Dave's Picks 42 is still out in the mail. Looks like it should arrive tomorrow or the next day.
I was marveling at the awesomeness of 5/2/70 Harpur College earlier. The acoustic set is such a contrast to the 7nrelenting energy of the electric set. When Dancing in the Streets reaches Dark Star levels of psychedelia during its peak jam you know the show is a good one.
DSO - Frankfurt Sept. 19, 2022
Just got my tickets. Hopefully they're doing the '72 Frankfurt-Show, 3 hours and 51 minutes.
DaP 42: Same as on April 25 - ''order information received''
Cheers
1974 the good, the bad, and the unreleased
I suspect people are just starting to get this release. I am super psyched to rip this one and see what it sounds like.
These are great shows, sort of the spring line-up of '74 and warm up of what would become The Wall of Sound one month later.
It seems their go to formula to rev up subscriptions is '77 in the pole position with '74 to follow. There are a few more top shelf '74 shows that will surely be released one day, but they are fewer and farther between.
Looking at what's been release so far by my counts we only have 11 unreleased shows from this year. They have either released or partially released just under 73% of the 40 shows played this year (the Partially released are primarily London and Winterland).
Partially Released 17
Released 12
Not released 11
1977 has been hit pretty hard too. The glass half-full view might indicate this formula will soon change and will begin seeing more variety and less predictability the subscription line-up. I expect we will see a shift in their approach to what kind of shows we see get released in the subscription shots.
There's a couple Slipknot! preludes and one unreleased Dark Star in the year, these shows will surely come out, but...
Hope you all are having a good start to the weekend. Birds are singing and the sun is gonna shine in my back door today. Happy first week of May everyone.
It's here. Or there. And the Tuna show.
But.... my tiny rural post office has very limited hours and PO Boxes are temporarily unavailable when the window is closed. Have to wait til noon before I can pick it up when the sole employee comes back on duty. Tiny, like six by six, one person at a time, all others wait outside. Last notice said 42 would not be here until Saturday 7th, but tracking over the weekend showed it was only 100 miles away, go figure. Jack and Jorma were great... said they very much enjoyed playing for an audience again. The venue has half its seats as food and bar in back and balcony. Jack brought Diana III, third in a series of custom designed instruments named for his late wife. Jorma said pandemic time off gave him a chance to get under the skin of his guitar playing. Jorma also noted his CBD stuff would be for sale at intermission, joked it did not sell well in Colorado or San Francisco. HT classics, played traditionally, a few new items, new arrangements of the familiar, standouts: Good Shepherd, Death Don't Have No Mercy, encore was Embryonic Journey. Really fine music, well worth seeking out.
Fall 91 you say?
Fall 91
Many great shows, but these seem to be the best overall without too many repeats and 7 shows seems like a good size, especially since there’s no reels to purchase and/or restore. Might make a tad more value oriented?
9/6/91
9/8/91
9/16/91*
9/22/91
9/24/91
9/26/91*
10/31/91*
Favorite/must haves*
7 Shows
66 one time songs: really good selection!
16 Repeats
6 Threepeats
(Not including D&S)
The three peats are: Dar Star, Attics, Let It Grow, Saint, Stranger, and Good Lovin’
The repeats are: Spoonful, Dark Star Jam, Wang Dang, Candyman, Maggie’s, Standing on Moon, Last Time, Stella, Samson, Eyes, TOO, Bertha, All Over Now, Heaven’s Door, Minglewood, and A&A. Hey, no matter how you slice em, Bobs ALWAYS gonna have repeats!
9/17 and other Oakland and Richfield are probably worthy, but then you start getting into more repeats and perhaps too big a box?
Your Welcome ; )
Bet this would sell out ridiculously fast!
#22712 landed
Six songs in, checking the booklet... Dave describes difficult decision on 2/23 versus 2/24 for DaP 13. If you have 13, you know the three photos on that case, they return again on the booklet for 42. Hope that's not a huge spoiler, since they have been out there for years. Resisted until a couple days ago, then had to spin DaP 13 to prepare. So nice to have most of the three night run with bonus disc. Must listen, no further comment for days, promise.
Package made it all the way…
Package made it all the way across the United States to the post office two towns away from my small town in Vermont, only to be notified that the package is being “returned to sender” due to an “insufficient address.” I don’t know why the address would be insufficient. It’s the same address I’ve always used. Email sent to customer service. Any idea if/when/how customer service will address this problem?
Land ahoy! 17206 has arrived safe and sound
Heard the mailman drive by and sure enough DaP42 is safe and secure, glad they went back to cardboard box shipping than the wimpy bags.
Why is the Bonus Disc not available as a T-Shirt? Would be greatest since Thelma! Anyone notice the change in hat between DaP42 & BD?
Hopefully it sounds as good as the artwork looks...
The Other Day, They Waited
Shipped last Thursday, arriving Thursday next, so it says. Really shouldn’t take a week for a small package to make it from Carlsbad up to NorCal, even for the USPS. But, as Hyman Roth said to Michael Corleone: this is the business we’ve chosen.
Fortunately, there is other music to pass the time. Including plenty of other ’74 GOGD. Just popped on the WoS Road Trips, fer eggsample.
For me, ’74 tends to have a more spacey and laid back feel than the previous year, and it does sound like they’re coming down off the peak of ’72-’73. I’ve wondered how the technology (ie, the WoS) played into that, and what the particular pharmacology of that era factored in as well. (I’ve heard stories, and I’m sure you have too, about how some of the crew were upset with the increasing prevalence of cocaine and began to insist that all who ascended the stairs to the stage must also partake of the sacrament, which could definitely contribute to some spacey second sets.) But like everything else prior to the hiatus, it’s all good to great.
Having fun spinning the ABB RSD release, Cream of the Crop 2003. Do yall know that 'un? There's a seedy release of this (with more tracks) that's still available, and allow me to recommend. Almost as good as the Fox box, which is pretty durned good indeed.
And when the day had ended, the rainbow colors blended, his mind remained unbended.

Try PM to Marye.
Wondering if you have P.O. Box?
The U.S Postal service does not do home delivery where we live, you HAVE to use a PO Box.
Since they sometimes use just UPS (box sets etc), we’ve been told to put both our PO and home address on, so depending on how it’s shipped, it will hopefully get here.
Daves is usually this Smart post nonsense (WHY?) so has to go to Post Office.
Once, after many years, Rhino messed up/changed the label, and the Box number wasn’t printed, so the PO rejected it and sent it back. It took awhile but eventually Marye and the Doc were able to facilitate a happy ending!
Check with your PO and see why they rejected it then try sending her a PM.
Still don’t understand why we can’t choose our shipping method. It would provide extra revenue!
Remember when anytime you purchased something on line there where usually several shipping choices?
Some of us would gladly pay additional to be able to use regular UPS and eliminate all the stress and headaches of Smart post!
PLEASE, STOP THE MADNESS! Give the customers what they want: less crap, more music, and shipping of our choice!
Thanks, rant over, back to your Mind Left Body jam…
Shipped from Fontana, Cali....
....Lopes lives in Mass and got his. Crow Told Me lives in NorCal and is "Talking Heads reference" still waiting.
Same shipping preferences I assume.
The Universe never ends = Dead.net shipping regarding topics that make my head hurt.
Unless some are still being shipped from KY. If so, delete this post.
Agreed on the missed opportunity regarding a bonus art tee.
Cue Fry's "take my money!" meme.
Oroborous
Hi,
I use a PO box. I’ve never had any troubles. Dave’s Picks have been coming correct for years, as have the box sets and the album re-releases. I’ve never had a problem before, which is why I’m not ranting or anything. Service has been great up until this moment. Without knowing anything, I’m going to guess the problem is with the post office and not Rhino.
Got my DP 42 Today ... Never got a shipping notice
Got it today - but for some reason I never got an email telling me this. Customer service needs to get their act together either that or update their computer system.
while I wait
I am listening to 5/25/77 (an "unofficial" set of discs from an "associate") for perhaps the first time ever.
May 77 was a gooooooood month for GD. Perhaps you got the memo.
I hope mine arrives today, but if it doesn't...c'est la vie. I plan to listen next week on a solo road trip. :)))
I need a miracle!!!!! This…
I need a miracle!!!!! This sold out on my birthday, I was a day late and a dollar short!!!
