    One more Saturday night at Winterland! Yes, we're back to home base for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 42, the complete show from Winterland, San Francisco, 2/23/74. The one that featured the earliest amalgamation of what would soon become the Wall of Sound, the one that is so "loud, clear, and defined," it's been ripe for release for quite some time and we're glad it's finally getting its due.

    First set or second, there are no wrong answers here. From the unique show opener of Chuck Berry's "Around And Around" and an incredible "Here Comes Sunshine" that would then disappear for 18 years, to a medley of WAKE OF THE FLOOD tracks - "Row Jimmy," "Weather Report Suite," and "Stella Blue" - cementing their status in the canon and an unstoppable hour through the classic 1973-1974 Dead that is “He’s Gone”>“Truckin’”>“Drums”>“The Other One”>“Eyes Of The World,” it's all exceptionally hot.

    that's a name I haven't heard for ages and instantly recognized. Nesterenko was a core player with the Blackhawks when I was a kid. Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Pit Martin, Tony Esposito and others. Legends. Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Flin Flon - what a cool name). Parents were Ukranian immigrants.

    Johnny Rotten wasn't so hard

    I met him once. Sort of. It was at the Electric Circus in Manchester in December 1976 a few days after the interview with Bill Grundy had been broadcast on television. There were 4 bands on that night, and the Sex Pistols were last on. I went on my own.
    Between bands I went to the bar upstairs for a pint and a breather. It was virtually empty - but the Pistols were there, talking to some girls at the bar. I got my drink and slumped down..and then got the feeling someone was looking at me. I looked at the next table, and it was Johnny Rotten , also sitting on his own. I mumbled a greeting, and he mumbled one back. Then he re joined the band and they went on. Not exactly great meetings of our time.

    Despite the fact that he had short hair and...well he was a punk....and I had very long hair and looked like - well I don't know what I looked like - but I sensed that we were cut from the same cloth at that time. Both about 19, skinny, mad..
    I'm glad Sid Vicious wasn't there, though.

    Wow, beyond cool Jeff! Those windows and that story was awesome! I can relate to egos, rich folk, and crazy deadlines. Fortunately I don’t have to deal with those so much anymore. Like y’all didn’t have enough to deal with without some DB mucking up the works. Shoulda dosed him lol. Seems like you’ve found the hard to get niche of art and commerce that’s cool and invigorating and not the soul crushing constantly compromised for cash scenario, kudos!

    Many celebrity brush ups but since it’s hockey season I’ll just share a related one. Mikes telling of the real great one, Gordy Howe, made me remember my time with the great but perhaps unknown by all except the most dedicated and perhaps “mature” hockey nuts. Almost 25 years ago when we first moved in the area we live in, my first job was at a golf club. I’d dropped outta grad school and for various reasons just wanted something less stressful and to be outside in the mountains etc. after a few years I became the outside staff manager.
    The director of golf had hired this old, literally crooked sort of old bent guy who had a been an NHL warrior back in the bad ole daze of Eddie Shore, Gordie Howe etc named Eric Nesterenko.
    He played over twenty years which is kind of amazing if you understand what hockey was like back then. So here’s this beat up old supposed legend working for me as a starter/ranger at an off the path club in the middle of nowhere.
    Well Eric was quite a guy but not much of an employee.
    He had two problems: as a starter he was never at the first tee box. Usually I could find him at the driving range which was no bueno because although we had liberal privileges at the club, we were not to use the facilities on the clock or in uniform. Well there’d be Eric 8 outta 10 times at the range. Now if that wasn’t enough, he was a machine and would not just hit a few balls, he go through ever damn ball on the range lol. I mean these were Titleist den caddies: (hollow mini golf bags full of about 300 balls), times about 15 stations on the range, that’s A LOT of balls and would wipe out most folks. But Nester would routinely go through ever ball out there.
    The other habit he had, as a ranger, people can be aholes when the ranger needs to repeatedly get on them. But hey, that’s their job and the offender was mucking things up for everyone else. I’m sure anyone who’s golfed regularly knows what it’s like being stuck behind rich ahole arm chair Tiger Woods, not fun!
    So Nesters problem was when some of these folks would get uppity with him, he’d be ready to drop the gloves!
    Now we thought that was hilarious, and some of these nutnics probably deserved a couple elbows in the corner, but of course professionally we had to act shocked, liked we cared when these dipshits complained about him.
    I never got to no him that well, but he was always a respectful gentleman to me and the staff, and we loved working with him.
    The amazing thing was, even years later, he continued to be a ski instructor in vail, even after all his body had been through! About 10-15 years after I worked with him, we had a gig at a tiny little place in vail. So small we were only allowed to use like one powered monitor with acoustic instruments. Nester, and his son, along with several others were regulars there for apre’ ski. We did the gig mostly because of the fun atmosphere, it was an early gig, and you didn’t need to schlep Amps/PA etc It was mostly for fun, which it was. In fact it got too big so they cancelled us. Imagine that: we’re making too much money and it’s too popular so you can’t play here anymore lol. Well not only was it fun, but Nester and all the regulars took really good care of us too. Some nights we’d actually make ok money!
    I haven’t seen Nester in years, but I think he might still be up the hill giving lessons if at all possible.

    So speaking of hockey, wow, wild games last night! Not a big Rangers fan (no offense) so loved that outcome, and holy crap I hope the whole Battle for Alberta series is like last night! Wow! Tonight…

    Jeff - Great guy to meet in Chuck Berry, that is gold! Great story, and your art work is amazing. What was Chuck Berry's reaction to seeing the work?

    I would say my meetings with celebrities has been great, overall. I worked a boat show in the 90s, and in the booth next to us was Desmond Llewelyn, infamous as "Q" in the James Bond series. It was a super dead night in January, and he was so nice. He was there for some company, and they were featuring that silly "Alligator Sub" from one of the cheesy Roger Moore movies (I was glad when they dumped Moore). I lost the poster he signed in one of many moves, regretably.

    Of the folks I met, Sir Edmund Hillary was top of my list for sheer respect, and he and Gordie Howe both had hands like dinner plates. Big dinner plates. Chris Hillman (pictured) was terrific, as was Herb Pedersen, and Gene Clark. Dan Akroyd was a hoot, and I still have the wine bottle he signed (sans the wine!). Rod Serling's daughter (Anne) and Byron Berline (fiddle master) both signed books for me, but the one that moved me the most was Kim Phuc, known infamously as "The Girl In The Picture", running naked as a little child from an errant napalm bombing in South Vietnam. She lives in the next town over, and she is the most spiritual person I have ever met, not at all defined by the atrocities done to her, or that she had seen.

    I'd love to have met Jerry Garcia, I understand he was about the most centred guy you could meet. I'm still holding out to meet Dylan, but I always get the feeling he may be somewhat jaded about that kind of an encounter.

    Meeting celebrities

    I worked at an Executive Jet Centre a few years ago for a while, rich people and celebrities, singers on tour etc. Rich people generally were great, polite and respectful, celebrities less so.

    I've literally bumped into Roy Orbison and Johnny Rotten. Roy smiled and ruffled my hair, I was about 8 at the time, and Johnny said nothing but the gorilla of a minder behind him (it was in the pub next to the Rainbow Theatre, London, before the Ramones New Year's Eve gig 1977ish) wasn't too polite.

    Getting in tune with Chuck

    I was surprised to find an unsuspecting Phil Lesh at a table at the Bar at Terrapin Crossroads one night a few years ago – wasn’t as quick on my feet at Keithfan was with Chris Squire. Sort of mumbled “Hi!” and “Thanks!” and dumb stuff.

    What I’ll never forget is the time I met Chuck Berry. He was the featured guest at the Grand Opening Night Gala for Dallas’s Hard Rock Cafe in 1986. I was lead artist/coordinator for the making of the Hard Rock's Elvis, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis stained glass windows, which earned me a coveted invite to the HRC’s VIP “Cheese Club” upstairs for a seated dinner. In fact I sat next to Chuck’s gorgeous daughter. After the meal, everyone exited back into the crush of revelers. All of us were partying hardy. During the transformation of this old church into the HRC, I’d discovered a hidden “nook” where I escaped for some calm.

    The next thing I knew club owner and visionary, Isaac Tigrett, opened the secret door to “my” nook, and told Chuck Berry he could tune and warm up there. Nobody asked me to leave, so I spent 20 or 30 minutes listening to Chuck play. We chatted a little about growing up in Missouri and Arkansas. Chuck was still kinda pissed at the way he’d been treated by the taxman, the law and the record companies. Then, before I knew it, a manager stuck his head in and led Chuck to where he waited until being introduced by Dan Ackroyd and proceeding to blow the top off the place. The Paul Schafer Band played most of the rest of the time.

Hung over, barely conscious, slumped in the lazy boy, bit of drool on the chin? Watching highlights.
Get a grip man, it’s only game one so far!!
When the going gets weird…
It was a tale of two cities: the AVs came down on the Preds like their namesake on a small Swiss village, but ESPN had to ruin it, at least for moi. Because of the never ending Rangers/Pens game (Boo!) they sent the AVs game to another channel. Well if your recording the game like I’m guessing a significant population ahem, you probably were unaware of this situation until it was too late, Dooaahh!
So only caught part of the first and the third periods. Hopefully the AVs are THAT good, and this wasn’t a fluke?
Tonight we’re turning Canadian again (actually I’m part Canadian already) and heading back to the TO where hopefully the Leafs will show us there for real this year and not the Leaves again!
GO LEAFS!!

I know it is one game, but I told you the Avs were good. And still the team to beat.

Look at it this way, at least you recoded the rangers/pens game and not a Hallmark movie. What a game. The rangers looked like they were going to blow them out after period 1. Chalk it up to inexperience.

Good luck to the Leafs tonight. I was very surprised by how flat Tampa was in game 1. Expecting a much better effort tonight.

It's hard to watch with the constant camera motion. I get motion sickness.

Also, never been a big hockey fan.

I have made my "I leave sports alone to avoid disappointment" comments previously, too.

And, don't you have to pay to watch the playoffs on the telly?

I do enjoy watching y'alls comments on the playoffs.

True to form, my DaP is likely sitting in some Customs house, where it will remain for days waiting for clearance. It’s amazing how I can order CDs from Germany, Switzerland, and the UK, and it is generally ten calendar days door to door, but DaP will be minimum 14, 15+ days.

As for the playoffs, I have great faith that Colorado is going to be in the final. They are a team built for the body burn that is the playoffs; they crushed a decent Nashville team last night like they were a college practice squad. Tonight, let thy might Leafs take another step up the rung with another win. Everyone says Tampa played so poorly. Hey. props to them as a good team, but maybe, just maybe, the Leafs are that good.

Oro - Before taking out citizenship here, let me tell you we have a useless waste of space for a “leader”. And don’t get me going on the taxes to pay for this moron’s brainstorms…

Excellent choice of shows. Great Here Comes Sunshine and one of the best locomotive Big Rivers and effervescent Eyes Of The World that exist. Sound is wonderful. Having said all that, how about printing all enclosed reading material (speaking of Wasserman's column specifically) large enough to read. Please. Even with readers I had to get a magnifying glass and I can't be the only one. Thank you.

The other thing is when text color and background color and font all clash into something you can't read.

I've never heard the first set but the second set is superb. IMHO, the best Comes A Time ever. I've skipped back and played it 4 or 5x in a row. I wish this was in the May 77 box instead of 5-5.

As already pointed out, the sound on this one is top shelf. Oro that was for you compliments of RJ.

As also mentioned, the boys had difficulty with the vocals for the first few songs. Suboptimal, yes, but it doesn’t really take away from the rest of the music. HCS is unbelievable. The vocals on that song are large the irrelevant anyway. To me that has always been unbelievably jammed out first set song. Love hearing it during this era.

I can’t read the liner notes either. However, a non-music highlight for me is the quote from the chick from Hayward on the inside cover.

When I was growing up we lived near a concrete spillway. On it was spray painted Uriah Heep. Next to it scrawled in smaller letters was the saying “ The Grateful Dead is for your head.” I never understood what it meant growing up. Now I do.

You're absolutely correct it's that Playin>Comes A Time>Playin sequence that makes it. And I agree this show more than ever beckons a full Norman. As far as the first set IMO the L.L. Rain is the BEST ever played and the set closing Dancin is BETTER than the gem played 05/08. It's also one the best SB's I ever heard. Yeah MAY the 4th BE WITH YOU!!!!

I didn’t lick it, saving that for the weekend.

Small print and using similar colors for text and background, definitely a major fail.
I stopped trying to read the booklets years ago.

Greetings All.

A question for your collective, valued knowledge and recollection. Does anyone know or recall if "Dave" had produced a video to announce the release of the Europe '72 Box set back in, was it 2011? Or was the official release only posted on Dead.net in a written announcement? I have tried various searches, but I cannot seem to locate any information on a video announcement for the release.

Any help with this question would be appreciated.

....that song holds a special place in my ❤️. It was the first GD song I listened to after Jerry passed. Had a tape in my truck stereo.
Got off work and headed to my friend's house. We just listened to the Dead all night and barely said a word. Smoked a lot. Nothing had to be said.
Still miss you big guy.

We had just mail ordered for MSG. Would have been our first east coast shows. Money orders were returned.
Some heads actually got physical tix back. I'm actually grateful we didn't. Is that weird?
Edit. Slipknot! tease in the Playin' y'all!! I wonder if that was random and Jerry wrote down that riff for future use or if they were already working on it.

Jerry sounds really into it on the vocals on sugaree. He really stresses out the words like he popped a quaalude or two, which is a good thing.

It’s been in “USPS currently awaiting package” purgatory for five days now. Beginning to suspect in a couple of weeks I’ll have to drop customer service a line and hope there’s a replacement copy available. Went through this with one of last year’s releases. Most aggravating.

There were no video announcements of Dead products back then. I DO recall getting updates as to how many discs it would take to finish the set. Either they were still getting tapes, or they hadn't quite worked out how to best present these complete shows on discs.
I cannot recall exactly when the video announcements came, though I am confidant that one of our brother "Heads" will come up with the answer to this riddle.
I'm still waiting for my Dave's 42, but still listening to other great stuff:

Missing not being in Vegas, drinking tequila with vguy this year! But I'll have a remote shot or three!

Listening to 1st Olympia night from RSD Vinyl today and sounds sweet. Have not had a chance to taste latest DaP. Entering the convergence where E'72 and May77 collide.

Trying to stay focused... My DaP1 vinyl is arriving on Mother's Day - woops...

...number 1152 has landed, yesterday! A day earlier than predicted by UPS!

So far the Dire Wolf, Here Comes Sunshine, and that awesome jam after Let it Grow stand out for me. Someone commented that Jerry is really stretching out the lyrics in his singing Sugaree, that's for sure.

Those videos have been made available for some time now, on the GD videos channel on Youtube.

Finally arrived at the last disc of St Louis box, said to be the killer in the box. That's tonight. Then I turn to DP 42.

Still pondering the imponderable: what kind of box has TPTB been cooking up?

After learning that my order was “returned to sender” due to a “bad address,” I reached out to Rhino. A person named Dr. Rhino immediately responded and offered to send a replacement. 48 hours later, the USPS recognized their mistake and delivered the package. I wrote Dr. Rhino and told him to cancel the replacement. I share this post to say that Rhino didn’t mess up, but they were willing to fix the problem. I know that saying positive things about Rhino isn’t popular, but here we are.

Meeting up with Nappy tomorrow at the Los Lobos gig.

Quaaludes, I remember reading or hearing about a show that someone gave Jerry some ludes, it did not go well.

Mickey. 9/11/81. Greek Theatre ( I was there, it was a killer show. They sang Mickey happy birthday before the show. Now that is a killer box set.

For Jerry's 31st birthday on 08/01/73 at Roosevelt Stadium - Jersey City, NJ. I clearly recall a woman sitting on a man's shoulders at the lip of the stage handing a bday cake to a roadie while the band was on stage. I could see Jer smiling from 100 feet away. And that's pretty much my ONLY memory of that two-nighter with The Band, as it occurred mere days after the two-dayer at Watkins Glen. I was all of 15, but getting wiser by the day. Man, were we crisp.

Back to JimInMD on the upcoming box, with a nod to Vguy and Nappy gettin' crazy with Los Lobos. Wish I was there.

Missed it by this much. Once it got rolling, 42 looked like it might get here ahead of schedule, then it sat for four days in GJ, was “supposed” to be here yesterday, PO has it now, so went, but hasn’t processed it. Anticipation, it’s making me wait!

I like the way you think.. except some of these shows either were not recorded or the tapes do not exist (thinking 9/8/67, etc.). Don't give Rhino any ideas suggesting we might pay for a rare yet empty box set, they might go for it.

PT Barnum, could it have been Valium instead? I recall reading a show where someone was giving them out backstage and Jerry jumped at the opportunity, downed a few and as it turns out he might have been allergic to Valium. 2/7/79??
