One more Saturday night at Winterland! Yes, we're back to home base for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 42, the complete show from Winterland, San Francisco, 2/23/74. The one that featured the earliest amalgamation of what would soon become the Wall of Sound, the one that is so "loud, clear, and defined," it's been ripe for release for quite some time and we're glad it's finally getting its due.

First set or second, there are no wrong answers here. From the unique show opener of Chuck Berry's "Around And Around" and an incredible "Here Comes Sunshine" that would then disappear for 18 years, to a medley of WAKE OF THE FLOOD tracks - "Row Jimmy," "Weather Report Suite," and "Stella Blue" - cementing their status in the canon and an unstoppable hour through the classic 1973-1974 Dead that is “He’s Gone”>“Truckin’”>“Drums”>“The Other One”>“Eyes Of The World,” it's all exceptionally hot.

Oro - Tampa is an excellent team, and if they ripped the lighting bolts off the jerseys, sewed on Maple Leafs, and called Toronto home I’d be over the moon, but this AVs team has got the winner’s swagger. They are just built to win this thing. I know some terrible things happened in Buffalo sports (damn you, Brett Hull!), but this ain’t your Dad’s Buffalo Sabres (or Bills). These guys are the real deal, and I’d stock up on “party favours” if I were you, because the whole state is going to go wild!!! The last winner we had here was the Craptors a few years ago, and those celebrations are incredible (see Golden State recently).

I just spent an hour watching Cup Check with Steve (from last night) and reading the comments.
If that’s an actual too many men penalty then half the goals in the NHL are bad goals!
Mac was no where near the play, and none of it affected the game, period!
The only reason the game wasn’t already over was the refs non calls against Tampa, luck and Vasilevskiy!
But if that’s not enough, the Bolts had 7 men on the ice, and Kadri was still able to burn 2 defenders and Vasy!
And if folks really want to get real, the refs stopped calling A LOT and more so as the game progressed.
If people are going to nit pick then go back and look at X number of actual penalties in OT and the 3rd with some involving hits that could of led to potential injuries. If the refs would of called even a few of those Tampa infractions, the game never would have gone to OT as the AVs PP would of scored for sure. The Bolts were gassed and on life support playing 5 Defensemen ffs!
I know, a lot of coulda, woulda, shoulda, but come on, anyone who actually KNOWS hockey they NEVER call Too many men in such situations AND, understands that in the playoffs, especially close final games etc, the refs generally let them get it on unless it’s just blatant and/or the refs need to calm down the aggression a little to keep things from getting outta hand. Ya know, tamp down the violence for national tv etc. lol.
So it was appropriate to not call a penalty on such BS. It was consistent with how they were (and often do) call these games.
And Cooper, who I think is an awesome coach: he’s just trying to change the focus and perhaps motivate his team. It’s truly bizarre how he, Kadri, and one of the linesmen were all involved in an even worse call that did affect the outcome of an AHL series.
Bottom line, it wasn’t a penalty and didn’t affect the play in progress. Certainly not the way that BS off sides during the Blues series in 2019? I think it was.
It sucks that things happen in big games like this, but unfortunately they do. Sure it would be great if it was all squeaky clean, but life ain’t like that. So it sucks that the Bolts are in the unenviable position there, but one could argue if they hadn’t have cheated the cap they wouldn’t have made this far anyway, and in the long run, the AVs probably would win anyways due to youth, healthiness if players, and talent, it just sucks that now there’ll always be that dark cloud.
But hey, you’ll get over it just like Sabres fans have had to get over NO GOAL! It sucks but Ce la vie!

If the Bolts can get enough healthy players, I don’t think thier gonna go quietly into that good night!
Or maybe being a long time Buffalo Losers fan (you pick the sport) I’m so paranoid and psychologically stressed out that I won’t be able to relax and believe it until I see em with the cup in the victory parade! ; )

Yea. The Avs had too many men on the ice. But you know what, it did not impact the play, so I am O.K. with it. It's not like a few years ago when the refs were overturning critical plays for irrelevant infractions. Or when Marchand jumps off the ice with ten seconds left in the period, leaving his team shorthanded and allowing the Blues to score the Cup winning goal. Not a penalty, but you screwed your team.

Oro - congratulations. The Avs are not going to lose three straight. I hope they win it for you tomorrow night. Always nice to hoist the Cup on your home ice.

For those that loved this particular edition of Jerry’s constantly rotating personnel, seek out the 3 Disc Pure Jerry release - Keystone Berkeley September 1, 1974. Leaving aside the family politics, the Pure Jerry series was an excellent collection, and they always included a little bit of swag with each release; this one included a bar napkin “from the Keystone”, which I still have!

DaveRock - How loud was it?

I was at one of the Ally Pally shows in September 1974. The hall was reasonably large and the full-blown Wall of Sound was used. The sound was really clear and the volume was "ideal". It certainly wasn't excessively loud - talking to your mates was possible without having to shout. Like home stereo systems, the better the quality of the system, the harder it is to judge exactly how loud it is. With the Wall of Sound definitely the emphasis was on clarity and quality rather than volume for the sake of it.

Is incredible too. Maybe a bit light on long jams - the one coming out of Truckin' may be the centre piece, but every song is played really well, and Jerry's guitar sounds superb.

It's probably been mentioned before, but I wonder how loud these 1974 shows were if you were actually there. They sound very quite, listening at home. Almost delicate. Especially compared to live shows I saw at that time-Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc who were so loud you couldn't hear for a week. I have just played the live 1973 show from Sabbath's Volume 4 super deluxe bollocks - a show I attended, as it goes - and even playing the cd quietly, you can sense how loud it was in the hall. The Dead sound almost acoustic by comparison.

the past few days was the 53rd Anniversary of the Newport Pop Festival in Northridge CA 1969...Jimi played twice, Spirit tore it up as did Johnny Winter & Jethro Tull...over the three days I don't think we slept over 6 hrs total...some fun....and the doses were free!

Good old grateful podcast - Europe 72

I have been listening to this podcast from it's first season. Currently it is covering the Europe 72 tour, show by show, venue by venue, days off adventures, with marvelous interviews with those of the 42 person entourage who were literally 'on the bus'. Wonderful stories abound, including great backstories of the new songs that made it to the official Europe 72 LP. Today I heard a great breakdown of all the characters referred to in Ramble on Rose, and the history of Morning Dew.

This podcast is making me consider going through the trunk again, this time just enjoying all the long jams.

PS Really enjoy all the discussion of Jazz masters. McCoy Tyner is one of my faves-seen him several times at Yoshies in Oakland. He used to play two week stands there right around my birthday. I would have a small birthday gathering of friends there, eating sushi, then we'd all go see the show. One time my friend passed him a note, and McCoy announced my name and it was my birthday! Sweet memories!

Someone on this forum mentioned Charles Mingus at Carnegie Hall a few months ago. I picked it up, nice mellow jazz, with a great pianist, Don Pullen. I really enjoy this and now I'm considering some of the other recommendations from you jazzy folk! Thanks for the great conversation.

Songs played during Europe 72

It occurred to me last night just how many new songs they played on this tour - and how few off "American Beauty", which was their last studio album at the time. Strange in a way, considering how good it is. Only "Truckin" and "Sugar Magnolia" were regulars-with just the one performance of "Brokedown Palace" as an encore for one show ( I think). Just goes to show how prolific they were at that time, I guess.

Hey VGUY72. I heard them on JamOn on Sirius and downloaded a couple of shows off Nugs. They are an awesome band. Jam band for sure. My favorite so far is 4-9-21. Take a listen. I've wanted to see them but I really curtailed my concert going since covid.

Another band you guys need to check out is Umphrey's Mcgee. They are a little heavier than Goose but in my opinion the best band there is today. I've seen them about 25 times before covid, mostly on the rail, and for sure the best times I've had since seeing the Dead in the late 70's early 80's. You really need to check them out live to get the full effect but download a show or two. 10-20-17 from the Capitol in Port Chester is one I would recommend. I saw a private show in Garcia's bar next door right before this show. They played right under a picture of Jerry. A great night!!!

The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Village Vanguard imbroglio...

So we're maybe 17, possibly 18, and we head into NYC to catch The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band at the Vanguard, which is barely big enough for the band and triangle-shaped room of the classic tiny bar tables. T-shirts, jeans, long hair, natch. Maybe three or four of us. My buddy's dad had drummed for the Newark-based Savoy label and turned us on to real music beyond rock 'n roll. So we were on a mission.

We catch the first set and blow our money on several drinks apiece. Second set starts, waiter stops by, 'What'll you have?' 'Oh, nothing, we're good.' (We're now broke except train fare home.) 'I'm sorry boys, there's a one-drink minimum required.' 'We bought several in the first set, doesn't that count?' 'No. No it doesn't.' Maitre de comes over. 'Gentlemen, you'll have to buy a drink or leave.' A light goes on in my head.

'May we have a word in the kitchen?' I say... 'Sure,' says the maitre de, uncertain of my motives. So we go into the tiny kitchen, a cook is looking on, and I said, 'We'd like to stay for the second set, would this help?' And I pull out a fat bindle of blow and dump some on the steel steam table. (The maitre de's eyes are getting wider...) Then I pull out a bag of killer Columbian and place a few buds on the table. The maitre de smiles. 'Feel free to order whatever you like, it's on the house,' my new best friend says. Ah, New York City in 1975! Where there's a will there's a way... even for veritable kids on the loose.

Trying not to get carried away, catching up. HF: fine stories from back in the day. In central Maine through mid 70s, our code name was CKR, for Columbian Killer Reefer, a huge step up from Mexican weed and standard grade Columbo. My how things have changed, local farmers gearing up, October 1st, retail sales begin in Vermont. Maine is way ahead of any other NE state in terms of retail, quality and value.

Forgot to mention Roosevelt Sykes for blues/barrelhouse piano. Saw Gary Burton and band play at a college chapel around 1971, outstanding. My second fave vibe after Hutcherson.

JJ Cale, indeed. A while back here, tagged a nicely done cover of Cale's "Same Old Blues Again" by the Terrapin Family Band with Neal Casal on location at TS, with that sweet Tulsa chug. Video can be found on the tube. Story goes, Cale was "discovered" after Clapton picked off "After Midnight" some fifty years ago. JJ's original remains the best, imho. He released several albums in the 70s that are well worth checking out.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, the 60s box must be about to be announced, fingers crossed there's several versions of Viola Lee Blues therein.

I also have it on good authority that a flock of Russian man-eating starlings has escaped, they are heading South and are expected to make it as far as Vancouver by the weekend. Chances are (nice song) if it is multi year, it’s going to cover different eras. That way they can have a mix of reels and cassettes/dats etc. I’m not sure they’d go full cassette/dat for a box yet as they still have many reels and then there’s the whole ABCD situation?
But if I’m correct about the above, there are just too many venues etc to try and guess, though my Great Dane Bix would fit the bill!

This is only relevant to anyone who had to wait a long time to receive a package(surely that's NEVER happened to anyone here) :)

Had a package shipped from TN, which is only 3 states away. It has travelled thus far, with 22 scans:

All of this has already taken the better part of 2 weeks. WHY??????

Excellent video on Paul Motian in NYC, at the end of his career, with undertone of valiant struggle with cancer that would take him out. One of the great contemporary jazz drummers, unique in many ways. ....there is a very good copy of video from a tasty portion of this show on yootooob; it's black and white if I recall (Nay! it's in color, I just checked) but crispy picture and sound. Pretty sure it includes the entire second set and the heavy Estimated > Shakedown from this show, which was a highlight for me despite Jer having a bit of laryngitis.

I will check out the aforementioned Bakedown GOAT from today in '85.

But seriously, why would it go to the house next door to one of the player's house
and not straight to safekeeping for the parade today?
