This was my first show, and life-changing. I remember being more familiar with the Violent Femmes than the Dead, and recognizing "Knockin" from the Guns and Roses version! But I was hooked, not just on the music but on the scene and the people. I had been very straight-life up til this point and I recall thinking "where did all these people come from and where do they live?" I had never seen freaks before!! :) Thanks from the bottom of my heart to Mike K., Brother Rich and Jersey Patty for showing me the way....

    first show
Huge fan of Violent Femmes at the time and had no idea they were opening...sweet surprise when i heard that distinctive bass thumpin over the speakers while in line for grubs! O! and the rest of the show was amazing...the scene changed me forever! beautiful day and all! "...Moloch the incomprehensible prison! Moloch the crossbone soulless jailhouse and Congress of sorrows! Moloch whose buildings are judgement! Moloch the vast stone of war! Moloch the stunned governments!..." -[I] Howl[I/}, Allen Ginsberg

Really well-played show, with superb sound. On the way out, someone in the crowd kept muttering "ALBUM PERFECT. . . ALBUM PERFECT!" I remember the first set list as Moonaree, Mingle On Rose, Masterice, Let It Grow!!! ;-) ". . . Music is the best!" (fz)

I remember during He's Gone the ending was done like it had never been done before. I also remember Jerry's hair waving in the breeze during Crazy Fingers. I really liked the place. I only went there that one time. I drove in from Illinois and it was well worth the trip. I do not remember hearing album perfect but I remember a lot of moos lol. I also remember a huge balloon peace chain going across the crowd where I was.

It was hot, and we were all sweltering. My friends and I had made it up pretty close and it was a hike back to the food stands, so we took turns going for lemonade, the sweet, fresh-squeezed lemonade that was like a gift from the heavens. The Violent Femmes weren't connecting with the crowd at all and the lead singer said something about how we were all too drugged out to appreciate them, and everybody kind of looked at each other like, "Give us a break." This giant of a guy fell suddenly before the first set and landed on my friend Keith, and all that you could see left of Keith was a little tuft of his red hair peeking out from under this mountainous fellow. Keith was squashed flat, like in the cartoons.Later, during the Ramble On Rose, our friend Noah turned to Keith and said "Can you imagine how long it would take to sing a hundred verses in ragtime?" and Keith just lost it. This was a great, solid show that was well worth sitting through the heat for.

I didn't get into this show, since my 2 mail order tickets were stolen by hitch hikers that I picked up, on the way over from Deer Creek. They looked, and acted cool enough, but I'm sure the girl opened my glove box, during a pit stop, and snagged my tickets. The f*cked up part was, I was planning on giving her a ticket....

I remember the naked man running around tripped out of his mind. The thought the Femmes were a weird combo.

This was my first show. I had to runaway from home to see this show because I was only 15 years old and there was no way my mom was going to let me go see The Boys(so she thought). Great first show to see, cool band to open, and what a sweet lot scene. I was instantly hooked. I totally remember mooing as we were herded out of the venue. In hindsight I wish that I knew that would be the only live Reuben&Cherise I would ever hear. At least I heard it live once!

This was my first show!! Ben & I drove up from Knoxville with a lot on our mind ;) It was an unbelievable scene and I one that I will never forget. We took our place in the 'herd' and yes, I too remember the "mooing" as we were herded out later that evening. I loved R & C and I remember dancing my ass off and feeling every single word that Jerry sang. This show also offered Bruce Hornsby on keyboard. He rocked out like he had always been with the Dead. What a way to start the journey!!! And the journey continues..............

Great show. The Femmes embraced coolness with Why Do Birds Sing? Amazing as it seems, that punk was originally an FU to bands like the Dead.

Every time we went...we said we would never go back...but like a fuckin magnet...Buckeye yanked us in...Rattle Friggin Rattle...back came the cattle...but this was an exception to the rule...I got my R and C while perched right in front of the tapers and the show was magic from that point on...never again did I have so much fun watchin Jerry.

I swear on Jerry's ashes that 2 months before this show a friend asked who was going to be the opening act. It was in the local paper there was an unnamed opening act. I had no idea so I said The Violent Femmes to shut him up. Well you can imagine my suprise when I hear over the loudspeakers "Please welcome The Violent Femmes." I was dosed heavily and thought someone was messing with me! that was one of the best (if not the best) show I ever attended. It has been over 15 years now and I still miss you Jerry. The angels in Heaven will love your music and I hope to see you there when I am called home.

I remember Dan Healy at the boards before the show and he was playing James Brown. He was messing with the levels and messing with everyones heads. Such the prankster. :)

This was the last show I ever went to (kinda drifted in other directions after that until it was ...too late) and definitely the coolest venue I ever saw the Dead at! (Only one outside the NY tristate area, actually, as most of my shows were as a teenager there.) I know this is a long shot, but I'm wondering if any of the attendees were among the group that stopped through Antioch College in a VW van (not making this up) and picked up folks on the way to this show. In my memory there were like 9 of us in that van...

Ahhh, I remember the moooing! That venue was weird. I got lost from all my friends during the first set, but magically was able to find them right after! Listening to the show now. Hard to believe that was 26 years ago!! I was 20. I remember that sweet Rubin and Cherise, and the juicy He's Gone. Nice show!!!
