Great energy show. As for evidence of Bobby, besides his singing, I do hear bits of his slide playing on a couple early tunes, but otherwise, yes, difficult to make out his rhythm playing. And I'll repeat what others have said, when a mix has Bobby well represented, it's a more interesting band, for sure.

Ready to pop in 3-10-81, thanks to "a friend," and blast away.

Yes to discussing music, I think we all know what's going down around us. But no apologies for backing Vguy.

Yes I’m talking about the selfish assholes post. So would I be ok saying people who support mask and vaccine mandates that still wear masks long after the mandates are over and want me fired because I won’t go along with the virtue signalers, are fascist goose stepping thugs? Masks that even Faucci admits are zero use against viruses. And cloth masks and gators….get real. Finally I don’t have a problem with people taking politics or hockey or baseball on the site. Free speech means just that. Just don’t think you can say something then stop debate. PS being born before the Polio vaccine I love them and have taken every one plus boosters. I’m 2x2 and plan on the 3rd one soon. Get my flu shot every year. I just don’t like sanctimonious goose steppers telling me what too do

....of course you would be ok saying that.
I didn't like wearing one. Wearing glasses, the fog was constant. But i figured it wouldn't kill me and it definitely wouldn't hurt me. And might prevent someone else getting it (I never got it to my recollection. Was tested four times). And remember the toilet paper shitshow? Woke my eyes up regarding selfish people. My son graduated high school in 2020. Poor kid didnt get a prom or a ceremony but we made it work. It definitely wasnt "fake news" and its still here. But there is no way they didn't help somehow. Especially N95's. Why do you think doctors wear them? Not a doctor btw. Just a guy who cares about people in general.
However, another positive, re; masks, was, in my opinion, was having to focus on people's eyes. Very expressionable. The eyes of the world if you will.
A younger co-worker even said he was starting to develop a mask fetish. 😷
Spinning 9.21.82 and watching the Oilers/Penguins game and the Bears are beating NE. Space into Throwing Stones is nice.
Such a long, long time to be gone, but a short time to be there.
You all stay cool now.
One of my touring buddies from the good ole days is passing through Vegas tonight and crashing with us. Gonna get high. He's looking forward to seeing the MSG Box.
We have a spare room in case any of you want to pass through. Doors open. No mask required. But it is Halloween season, so go for it.

says the box set is "righteous". Met this cool dude in 1988 at a gas station. Friendship bracelets unite!
Remember those?
I rocked at least six at one time.
Going to see Bobby this weekend, so that's cool.
Edit. Lawn seats at D&C in Phoenix are $88 before fees, so $130.
Just get me in the building. Thinking about it.

I haven't heard the latest box, but I like it generally when he is high in the mix. Fascinating guitarist. Shame he stopped playing Gibsons, though. That thought cropped up again listening to the October 78 shows in the last day or so - not as full bloodied as the sound he got in 1972 by a long chalk.

Again, it might be a cultural difference, but to me it is two different things, supporting people, and supporting what they say. We are not our opinions- which hopefully change as we grow and learn new things. It takes a true friend to tell you when you are out of line.

A couple of years ago, I came across a phrase in a book about The Quakers. It was " Think it possible that you may be mistaken." I always try to remember that when I think I know what I am talking about.

NARUTLEE: looks like that new technology you mentioned does exactly what you hoped: separate individual instruments off of a shared track. I didn’t look at much, so not sure quite how it’s done except somehow the computer learns certain sounds, voices, instruments etc. Giles Martin used Tax Man at a NY demo where he removes one thing at a time until until nothing but Ringos snare was left, Amazing!
Unfortunately Peter Jackson & company own the proprietary SW and are only letting Martin use it for Beatles work as he’s a huge fan, BUT, but, this could theoretically work on Dead tapes. In fact Martin first used it on redo of Hollywood Bowl because they didn’t think it would work with Studio recordings, so it has already been used on live material!
Wonder if anyones heard that redo and what it sounds like?
Thanks again to Narutlee for the heads up!

Am I the selfish asshole because I would love a forum dedicated to Dave's picks 44 to be dedicated to that or even have that as one of the more discussed topics? If you're calling someone a selfish asshole, be direct. I merely expressed that this forum is not intended for such discussion as to your fear or support of vaccines or mask mandates or who you do or don't support. There are plenty of outlets to express your freedom of speech and I wholeheartedly agree that it's an integral part of the fabric of American society, but if you're so devoted to getting out the vote, maybe find a better outlet because it seems like everybody here already knows it. Say whatever you'd like here, it would just be lovely if a forum devoted to the Dead's releases could be that. You might find this surprising that there are even sites where you can discuss just exactly the topic you'd like! Crazy, I know. Ain't it funny how people who use sanctimonious ironically are often the most sanctimonious of us all.

I rollerblade 9 miles a day when it's not raining. A hill course. None of this flatland nonsense. I proudly wear my Reggie Dunlop jersey while doing so.

Last night I made grilled halibut with a charred jalapeno, tangerine and honey reduction. Grilled artichokes on the side.

I'll be back when the bickering dies down.

Daverock, I just looked but couldn't find it -- a video of Weir onstage with Chuck Berry. Chuck nods to Bobby to solo and Weir plays the weirdest lead guitar ever. It just did not sound like a lead guitar solo but that's what it functioned as. Not saying he "couldn't" play straight lead, but the lead he played seemed so Weir-ish.

I'll search and see if I can produce a "lunk" to it.

Damn, that sounds wonderful! I was all "died down", then I see someone calling, I think, me a selfish asshole. At least I didn't see it to be directed elsewhere. So look someone's gonna throw mud around and not even have the decency to direct it at me, I'm not gonna be quiet. But I'm all done arguing over this nonsense. Seriously, talk about whatever you want, I'll just inject my thoughts on whatever the release might be.

Dave's 2023 announced with 45 looking to represent two spectacular shows from 10/1 and 10/2/77. Hot take but I love the fall tour even more than the spring, though I won't sit here and say the spring is not audio gold. There's a great Miller remaster of the Betty boards on the archive, check those shows out if you're unfamiliar, they are hot hot hot. Scarlet > Fire on the second night is especially so and new minglewood on the first is my personal favorite. Always hoping for 6/10/73 and 6/21/80 (also 71) so we'll see if any of those are one of the later picks.

I'm having a problem following your posts. First, the Grateful Dead was/is a political band, you said so in your post. Mentioning the rainforest benefit shows in 88 and specifically calling out 5-6-70 right after Kent State, I'm presuming that you must mean Phil's comment after the show? We all said that multiple times back in the day. Then you say there is no room on this forum for politics? Sucks for you and all the people who want to talk about the band and the music? A bit inflexible I would say, but hey, that sucks for me. Your condescending tone about the internet being a big place and there are other places for me or anyone else to post about other topics than the music or the band is just like a politician telling a woman she doesn't have control over her own body. Somehow I get the feeling that I'm speaking to an election denier, and I know that is a waste of time so I will end with this You don't get to tell me where or what I can say, dig it? On this site, only MaryE gets to do that.

Hey ORO, Didn't they use the same technology or a similar instrument-separating technology on the 50th anniversary mega box for Woodstock? IE: Got BS&T's individual horns, etc. back in tune, etc. Would be very cool if that became available for future and/or revisited Grateful Dead releases.

Probably old news to many, but I only recently ran across this. It's sort of a poor-head's way to listen to individual players on the China-Rider; Bertha; Playing in the Band; Sugar Magnolia from Veneta 8/27/72:
dead dot net/playingintheband

Sorry, but my optimism for the future is very low these days. I always thought that TRUTH was not a fashion or something to be molded to fit one's personal world-view and needs. We are losing/have lost the ability to listen and learn from others. Daverock's quote bears repeating: "Think it possible that you may be mistaken."

Interesting sidebar. There is a part of me that is really curious about how this would work and sound. There is another part of me that wonders how this would be received if Norman et. al. adopted the technology and set it in motion. I remember the feedback he got when he messed with Phil's bass a dozen or so releases ago.

My guess is even if the techology were rolled out so others could use it wouldn't necessarily go over well. Separating out the individual components from the two tracks and monkeying with the levels might drive some bonkers. I bet it would be controversial at best. Well.. at least had Bear, Betty & Co. to save us some of the agony.

Be well folks.. play dead, get the vote out. ..or as DHBrewer says, be kind.. rewind (to 1969).

I just glanced at a couple articles so don’t really know much, so I’m not sure Jeff? It sounds like it just got invented so I’m guessing the Woodstock thing is something else?
You can check out stuff on Peter Jackson’s Let It Be which is where and what for the tech was developed. Giles Martin has used it via PJ for Live at Hollywood Bowl and Revolver redos.
Somewhere the description is used: I was given a cake and when finished I had eggs, flour, sugar, etc…
Very interesting prospect. I just wonder how that effects the original sonics but I’m guessing GM wouldn’t let it get released on Beatles redos if it wasn’t proper?
But yes Jim it does propose a Frankenstein esque scenario, and I’m not sure of anything anymore, but I’d bet the farm that some Deadheads would most certainly have some kind of problem with it, especially if it was good lol
Theoretically this couid be a game changer for all old music…

I actually never said that you can't post political things, what I originally said was "it'd be great if these forums could try to focus on the music, reddit does exist after all". To back that up, I gave an analogy which, because you missed it, is a comparison of sorts like how you wouldn't talk about Adam and Eve in biology class, not that you couldn't. If you were able to read rationally, you'd see that I, several times, said you can post whatever you'd like, but that's not the literal topic of this forum. Not really room for debate on that, just kind of obvious. Hey, maybe you didn't know there are forums out there on the web where you can discuss whatever the topic may be, it's really cool actually. Again, for a place that's designated as a discussion on Dave's Picks, we're not doing a whole lot of that, but hey is what it is, right? As for me being an election denier, thanks for the assumption, and I'd guess you're old enough to know what they say about assumptions, right? Also, you equating my suggestion to talk about the music more to a politician denying women the right to advocate for women's rights is just as ignorant as the politician. I'd suggest you just read a little slower or maybe throw some fine tunes on, smoke a big fat j and relax before you feel the need to take so hard of a stance.

Well I’m sure some folks are elated for yet more 77.
I’m sure I’ll get at least one good listen but because we’re running out of “picks” more rapidly then one might think, it’s the one year I was hoping not. Since he’s hopscotched between 77/78 for first pick, I was hoping for another hot Spring 78, but since he’s gone with 77 first, 6 outta the 7 (77s) he’s put out, and 5 outta the last 6 first picks, it’s more formulaic then a surprise. That’s like 15% of all DaP from one year, yaaaawnnn!
But hey, I’m sure I’ll enjoy at least once and I’m sure more will like this than not, so

It’s one thing to shout “Judas!!!” at your favourite singer from the comfort of your own seat, and some of the hecklers are pretty damn funny. But crossing the line and going on stage…those tend to be the pretty crazy definition of “fan”, never quite sure what they may do. Bruce Dickinson was probably just being proactive.

As someone asked earlier the international shipping is $22.99, so more than last year but not too bad.

Edit: Contacted by my card company saying the payment was declined and asking me to confirm I made the purchase. I said yes and tried again 5 minutes later and it worked. My subscription is in.

Here's something posted a while back by Doormouse on a Steve Hoffman Woodstock forum:

"Andy Zax [who produced the 2019 WS mega-box] tells the story of how difficult it was to get all of the horns in tune on the Blood, Sweat and Tears performance in a Rhino podcast. He explains that all of the horns were confined to two of the available six tracks and that due to the conditions under which they were played and recorded they were out of tune making for uncomfortable listening and he explains that apart from one track on the fourtieth anniversary set nothing had appeared from this set in either the movie or on the soundtrack albums. Initially, as was the case with the Ravi Shankar set, the producers believed that the techniques used for demixing at Abbey Road Studios may provide the answer but ultimately it was developments in ‘polyphonic tuning’ that allowed the issues to be solved. This is a form of autotune but is tailored to the individual instruments to alleviate the problems caused by the less than ideal recording environment. The band were at a particular high point and were unhappy to have the recordings released with the tuning issues, over which they had no control, in play. And, in spite of the sax player, Fred Lipsius, stating that this was their worst gig ever, the result here is a triumph of modern audio mixing technology over the horrific environmental setting of the original mult-track recording. As a fifty year old record of a big band recorded in a muddy field in the cold, wet, early hours of the morning I guess you could say it is a magnificent achievement to all concerned."

I agree that, for the most part, nobody in their right mind would want to be responsible for deciding how to rebalance players on a hallowed Grateful Dead recording. Still, there could be times when technical shortcomings of a recording might be repaired with a tool like this.

There are times when I want to comment and don’t. At other times, I regret not commenting and it gets too late. However, I NEVER tire of visiting, reading and commenting.
So, please bear with me:

I believe that it’s perfectly ok to post about any topic you would like to (within reason of course). I mostly enjoy talking about other things in addition to the GOGD. I have learned about, and spent money on, many cds & a few books I never would have known about otherwise.
I don’t mind sports coming up, I love sports, although seemingly no one likes the same teams I like.
Even politics doesn’t bother me too much, even if it’s an opinion that differs from mine.
When it comes to ARGUING about an issue, that’s another matter entirely. We police ourselves pretty well on here, at least I think so.
Differing opinions (GD eras anyone??), really don’t seem to bother most of us.
Respect of others, and their right to volunteer an opinion is paramount. No one, I feel, has a right to an ongoing argument on this sight.
While I agree with a LOT of things discussed here, I certainly don’t agree with everything!!
My best response to a topic or opinion I don’t like, is no response at all. What’s that saying, If don’t have anything nice to say…”
There’s virtually no one on here that I could say I have a bone to pick with. C’mon people, we should OBVIOUSLY take care of each other.
There were a couple of times people have singled out DAVEROCK, and my first reaction to that was, what?? This guy ALWAYS has good stuff to share. There was ONE time he said something that I was surprised to hear, and except for this post now, NO ONE would have known that. And I maintain that if I ever get lucky enough to go to England a 3rd time, I would definitely see if it were feasible to meet up with him for great conversations.
Without a civil exchange of opinions/differences, how would we learn anything new?? An open mind is the best defense against differing views.

Please accept an apology for a long rant. I couldn’t help it.

Now, WTF?? I had NO IDEA Dave’s 2023 subs were available. I ALMOST bailed last year, and am glad I didn’t. I’m gonna pay the ticket, and take another ride!!

Lastly, my Ravens play Tampa Bay on Thursday Night Football. I invite everyone to root for, or against them. I’m OK with that!!
