This week, as we roll toward the official start of Fall, we have 15 years of Grateful Dead history to cover, starting in 1972.
Our first track this week is the second set opening jam from 9/10/72 in Hollywood, featuring a well-jammed He’s Gone>Truckin’ combination. These two songs often segued into an Other One, but on this night, they left them together as a stand-alone jam, saving the night’s big jam for later in the set.
Next up are a couple of tracks from 9/16/72 at the Boston Music Hall, the second of a two night stand in Boston. Worth noting is that these two shows were scheduled to be performed at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, but the local authorities didn’t sound too keen on having the Grateful Dead take over their venue, so the shows were re-scheduled for Boston. From this second show in Boston, we have a very pretty, early Stella Blue, as well as the first set closing Playing In The Band.
Moving up a year, we have a very nice pair of tracks from the excellent shows at William and Mary College, with the first being a typically good 1973 version of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider from 9/11/73 and from 9/12/73, this nascent Weather Report Suite, complete with horn accompaniment.
Next up is some music from the Grateful Dead’s return to Madison Square Garden in 1987 after a four year hiatus from the venue Jerry famously called “juiced.” From the first night of the five night run, on 9/15/87, is this post-Drums sequence of The Wheel>Gimme Some Lovin’>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia and from the next night, 9/16/87, is the second set opening jam of Bertha>Greatest Story Ever Told>Devil with the Blue Dress>Good Golly Miss Molly>Devil with the Blue Dress>He’s Gone. Check out Jerry’s stunning vocal flourishes at the end of He’s Gone; truly some unique stuff. These recordings are drawn from the Beta PCM digital tapes.
Check in next week, when we’ll have some more great music for you. As always, feel free to write with questions or comments.

The words "mean people suck" has a nasty ring to it.
It makes you think that the person who is saying it is no better than the one it is aimed at. Hey, as with anything, I think many folks have left for good is the obvious conclusion to be drawn here.
I only come to read the history, and then go away till next Monday. I do not like the way this stuff sounds on my computer sounds. I have been downloading some '73-75 Little Feat shows from Archive.org, which is excellent stuff! Great to listen to when driving around in the car.
Mean people can be nice if they are not riled.

The one good thing that has happened out of the nonsense on here is that it has led me to communicate with a bunch of people who have led me to a ton of downloadable Dead on the internet, which in turn has led me too more music than I ever imaged could be on the internet for free download. I have discovered a couple dozen new bands I never would have encountered otherwise, found a huge selection of Phil, Ratdog, JGB and bunch of other stuff. Thanks Rhino and the rest of crew on this site. I definitely don't ever need to do business with you in the future.

My 700 hours of GD cassettes are gathering dust: if your a newbie looking for stuff to appreciate, send me a note at gr8fulted@gmail.com and I'll accommodate you. Will entertain a tour of the vault as potential barter.
Great stuff
Thanks for more fine selections, Dave. While I'd like to be able to put these tunes on my mp3 player & listen while I'm walkin' 'round town, ya can't always get what ya want, can ya? Others have suggested a monthly download fee...personally, I'd prefer if you do make them available for purchase that you make indivdual files downloadable for anywhere from $.29 - $.99 per, depending on the length of each file.
My problem isn't with the change from downloading to streaming but, like so many others, it's with the bunch o' crap reason given for the change. After all, before the change, you were posting the number of mbs for each file, and the only reason for that would be to let us know how much hard drive space we'd need to have to download the file! Claiming to not realize people would be downloading is such a lie, and it hurts when people you think you can trust lie to you. Hopefully, you'll (and by "you", I don't mean you personally, Dave, but the powers-that-be who most likely forced you to give us the big lie) do something to regain that trust that the Dead garnered over 4 decades by being straight with us (so to speak). I have faith that you will. In the meantime, thanks for giving us the pleasure of being able to listen to such fine, fine live music.

Being a head for 15 years now , it leaves me ashamed of the few , but notorious people who are trying to greedily bother this nice space . That was created for us . But that they ' all of the sudden ' thought they could put their ' own ' rules to the TS - these few ' lost ' heads
Thanks David for the awesome selections
Remember folks , greed . In any way shape or form is not nice
Lets be real Dead heads and not comment against this effort by GD P
Thanks and much peace

i would think that both the dave's are not being effected by the outburts of anger...tho mis-directed, it's only but a choice to vent and express thoughts/feelings. it's not that this writer is supporting such verbage but rather supporting the fact of expression..we tend to know the 'golden rule' but most don't know the 'silver rule'.....if you have to take it personally refuse to take it seriously...if you have to take ti seriously, refuse to take it personally....i too am sadened by the choice (and it still hasn't been made clear/public who's decision it is) to stop the downloading but i've learned (the hard way) that the only thing i can control is my attitude and behavior..the rest i'm powerless over....
negative waves
all these negative waves are making me want to listen to beach music
I'm Free
Like red8sox, this site has helped me make connections that have weaned me off the corporate teet. Now I just read David's reviews to help me pick which show out of my collection I want to listen to next.
I don't need Rhino anymore.
I still might buy something from them, if they get around to offering something worth paying for. But I don't need them.
I'm free.
Peace,
Richard
might as well
streaming's cool. downloading was better but as so many people say ..."it is what it is" and its good enough for us.the grateful dead are alive and well.thank you David

Another very excellent selection David! I'd rather be anywhere but at a Dead show!
Mean People Suck
Again we see that pitiful saying so lacking in originality. Those types of things only polarize people. I find it interesting that anyone even offering the slightest opinion here, which goes against the grain, are ripped, yet someone else can use the "F" word all they want, yet nobody seems to find that offensive?
"Mean People Suck" is a pathetic saying that has a boomerang effect: it says more about the person saying it, than about the person it is aimed at.
Greg SC
Looking forward to listening
Looking forward to listening to many clips from Tapers Section. Sorry to read that there are Dead friends out there who can't even listen to the tunes. I'm having no problem.
downloads?
why are we not allowed to download and save these gems anymore? Why did it change?
Ashes to Ashes
Greg SC,It seems to me that you're the person trying to polarize this issue, which is surprising to me. If you took the cliché personally, that's your problem.
As far as the download issue, no one even knows what the facts are, at present, so show some fucking maturity and give all a fucking break! OK?
Sorry 'bout that Greg, I just couldn't resist the temptation (and I vow to cease using the word in all posts that are not narrative stories, quotes or characterizations, from hence forth - as difficult as it will be for me).
I'm also up for an adult (with suitable warnings for strong language and age restrictions) debate section on this and other issues (although it may exist already, I'm not sure if "What's on Your Mind" is suitable), if anyone else is interested but this isn't the proper venue, imo. I feel we need to take these fights "outside" and have it out, once and for all. The folks here putting this work together are owed an honest opinion on the music and their efforts in that regard, not the bitterness (and childish tantrums) some feel toward the other issues, of which they are most likely not involved. I find it ironic that many of those folks threatening financial boycott are angry because they can't have something for free. No one else finds this ironic? I side with those that are asking for music for which they would gladly pay (I'd rather it be free like everyone else but that seems ridiculous in this day and age, sadly). Not providing such a product also seems ironic (to me) for a company needing to generate revenue but again we don't know what is ACTUALLY at issue. I also agree that information seems very slow in emerging but I also don't prescribe to rushing the guy working on my car's brakes. I'm more concerned about getting a good product and end result than the legal/technical minutia involved in such projects and endeavors.
Let's just concentrate on the enjoyment we get from being here and listening to all this awesome music, which has taken years to realize while visiting the Dead's web site. I've wanted steaming music for YEARS on their site. I always found it a terrible reality to come here and not hear their music playing in the background, at least. Which reminds me, I've got to write Phil....
"All energy flows according to the whims of the Great Magnet. What a fool I was to defy him."
Negative Nancys
I guess they found somewhere else to bitch about some other universal injustice. Yay!
Polarizing
I'm not polarizing. I only think that people need be allowed to vent. And when they vent, things will cool down. And it doesn't help matters to keep fueling the fire by saying "mean people suck."
Some of the people on the receiving end of that have been dead heads spending their last nickels and dimes on the road following the band sometimes for years. Are those mean people?
I personally find more offense in the filthy language here.
Greg SC
wherever he goes the people all complain
I must second the powerful and well stated points that Golden Road articulated. Boycotting a business because they aren't giving it away free? Seems oxomoronic to me. Back in the day we said (*vulgar language alert) "fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity". But I have been in left field for so long that I have a tent pitched out there. And I like that about me.In my prior post I encouraged people to figure out what it is they are really angry about, and don't carry a bunch of anger (or disappointment) from other issues (ie. Jerry's passing, loss of the archive, no Dead tours, etc. etc.) to vent about this to a disproportionate degree, and then figure out what you can do in a positive fashion to HELP.
Yes, greg (and others) venting can be healthy especially when one is able to get that toxin out of them, and then move on, to then put energy into positive pursuits, and use the part of our brain that employs 'executive functioning" and then to be able to put our current trials into perspective. You know this isn't the worst thing to happen to us as a group, not by a long shot. If you want to rant and rail, ok, but get through it, to the other side. Otherwise you make yourself sick. And make others around you sick, even the people that care about you and that you care about.
"the wheel is turning and you can't slow it down, you can't go back and you can't stand still, if the thunder don't get you then ..." or " when the blind man takes your hand and says Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow, for the dreams we all...." You all know the rest. Live it.

LMFAO
the comment about people being on the wrong end after they spent all their money on dead tour is a laugh riot. Was a gun put to those folks head? It sounds like you think those people were forced to spend money (OH NO NOT MONEY!) going on dead tour. What, so since you went broke spending every dime you had following the dead you expect everything to be free? Thats hillarious. I don't even want to estimate how much money i've spent seeing/following/listening to/purchasing cds, t shirts..you name it on GD products. I wasn't forced to give my money away. I like giving my money to a band/organization who's main goal was and still is to provide limitless enjoyment to their listeners. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when i read that people have spent their last dime seeing the dead over a decade ago. What since that time you haven't been working? I know I have. Seriously folks, this is a business here. We are blessed to have FREE STREAMING AUDIO both here in the taper's section and over in the GDH section. If anything we STILL owe money to the GD. To talk of boycotting all of the new/furture Rhino releases because of a change from FREE Mp3's to FREE streaming audio is ridiculous. Its laughable. Its immature. Its selfish. Its just plain dumb. No one feels sorry for anyone who claims that they spent all their money following the dead around back in 95 and now they expect compensation....LMFAO. No one put a gun to your head and told you to spend your money. But then again, there were plenty of people who felt that they were intitled to see deer creek 95 for free also. I'm sure those people who ripped that fence down also spent all of their money on dead tour. So, they decided to be ass-oles and rip down a fence. Why not? wern't they entittled to get into at least one show for free? I mean why actually pay those musicians who get up on stage? Why actually pay all the people who put in hard work bringing those shows to you? Naw...you guys deserve to get into shows for free by ripping down fences. Its a personal decision...so don't bitch and moan now that everything must be free....
Thanks for the continued COMIC RELIEF i keep seeing. Its a laugh riot. If you want free stuff...then your welcome to move to any number of communist countires out there. I hear you get lots of free stuff down in Cuba and North Korea like free toilet paper once a year.
Untill then, please move on with your lives already and leave the people who enjoy this site alone. Thanks. The cool people know who they are.
The cool people know who they are?
There are "cool" people here? Are they hip too?
Who knew?
Cool People?
Hey Ed,Don't you know the secret handshake?
If not, you must be a square.
That means you can't hang out at the malt shop with the "in" crowd. You know, the ones with the dancing bear window decal on the back of their Lexus.
its obvious..
...cool people are the ones who buy their own toilet paper

sometimes you can view the info of/for the show in the 'shows/lyrics' section and sometimes (usually not then so) it'll post additional info like guest artist.....if you do look back at this gig..it dosen't even have this tune (weather report) listed so sometimes the posted info is not always accurate...i would have enjoyed the additional posting re: special info ie: mickey's return to the band and such but hey...don't laways get what I want...
Thanks TJC
I read the description several times and wasn't sure if it was me or the info wasn't present. It read as if maybe it was edited out to save space. I agree with the "principles before personalities" statement and have found it the hardest of those 12 to practice, outside those rooms. "Progress before profection" is what I ultimately settle for, in life. Not a Tradition but a great adage, nonetheless. Your wit is excellent!

Streams & Comments (Missing or Otherwise)
Why fewer comments? Pages less than before? I'd venture that once Taper's Section switched from MP3 to streams it lost many regular visitors. Perhaps it lost most of its weekly audience. That's what happens when the free download gravy train runs off the rails. (Pardon the forced metaphor.) So, all those conspiracy theories regarding nefarious acts of serial deletions need to be shelved. Please.
Next, I'd like to make one comment about MP3 vs. streaming audio. I miss the MP3s. I fervently anticipated every Monday's new batch of vintage Dead from the curatorial genius of David Lemieux, whose Podcast I used to grab from iTunes long ago. Alas, my one and only recourse has been to vote with my feet, er, mouse, er, fingers. I am among the many formerly dedicated TS visitors who've simply faded away since the streams arrived.
"The bottles stand as empty, as they were filled before. Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more."
Oh well. The Internet is full of free stuff (if you know where to find it). Rhino's doing whatever it's been told by the surviving members of the band. The band has every right in the world to decide how it wants its music released. And we've all got many, many, many, many choices as it pertains to consuming the recorded works of the Grateful Dead.
Further.
Priciples
Actually,it says "..reminding us.to place principles before personalities." - not "....practice principles..."
and
"...we claim spiritual progress, not perfection." - not "....before.perfection"
Small, yet significant differences in meaning - IMHO

Cool People... (cont'd)
On September 16th, 2007 GRTUD said:"Cool people... ...are folks that not only stand on their higher moral and educational ground and principles but fight to help others share the view, not to look down on them."
ppppffft! Anyone who stands on "their higher moral and educational ground and principles but fight to help others share the view..." is nothing but an arrogant, smug elitist who is in fact patronizing, and forcing their misguided views on others.
Spare me the arrogance and elitism, please!
