....I took that personally Mr. Ones.
I prefer having a seat these days, but I'm flexible. Just bought Widespread Panic tix for here in March. Options for floor with no seats or loft with seats. I picked seats this go around.

The ginger boy is Tigger (shelter name) and we're thinking of going with Hobbs or Otto. The tuxedo boy is Pepe (Le Pew? shelter name) and Checkers or Big Boy Pete are in the running. Feel free to vote on those choices. Both strays from the shelter in Ridgway and Tigger was one of those two days from death cases that made it. Tough row to hoe but it's all good now. I almost hate to admit this, but these days, if I can sit and listen, I quite prefer that now. I realize that I cannot dance sitting down, but at my tender, advanced age, sitting and listening is good!!
Occasionally, I'll get front row seats of this section or that, and really look forward to being able to SIT!! and don't you know usually, there will be rude, entitled fans up dancing, and blocking my view. Phish fans are notorious for going to areas that they have not purchased tickets for and feeling like they own the place.

Greetings from the Jam Band Ghetto

Kind of surprising, but not really, to see that the TTB's outstanding "I am the Moon" has been completely ignored by the Grammys and critics' year-end best of lists. It seems clear that once you get pegged as a "jam band" the recording industry and critics decide that there's no point in taking your music seriously, no matter how many people flock to your shows or how good your recorded output actually is. It happened to the GOGD, it happened to Phish, and to pretty much everybody who's gotten pegged as part of the jam band scene. Now it's happening to TTB, and it'll happen to Goose or whoever else comes along.

Have to say: I've never understood this. Bands that can actually play their instruments in a live setting, and who can even improvise on them, and develop devoted audiences on that basis, they don't count somehow. Probably because their music doesn't lend itself to radio or tik tok, and doesn't have much to do with the trends that wannabe hipsters pride themselves in being up on. Meanwhile, you get "bands" that are basically one guy and his girlfriend with a laptop in mommy's basement, who would get eaten alive if they tried to play in front of more than a couple dozen people, and that's considered a cutting edge rock band these days.

I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The jam band world is its own ecosystem, sustained by us die hards who like to stand up at concerts (maybe even dance) and who want to hear bands that can actually play for a couple hours without endlessly repeating the same three licks and the only groove they know.

OK, end of rant. Last five!

    How about lying down?

If I remember rightly, a lot people used to lie on the floor waiting for Hawkwind to come on. And then struggle to their feet when the band came on. Maybe it was just me.
I saw Pink Floyd in a huge air hangar on the Animals tour in 1977. After hours of sitting on the floor, the band came on, and one bloke in front of me stood up. The guy next to me shouted at him to sit down, and then turned to me and said, "The Floyd deserve to be listened to." It was partly this attitude that led to punk.
Mind you, that was the opposite end of the spectrum . Short haired herberts jumping about, barging into you. You've heard of the blues - that was the black and blues.

Sixtus, a good 5-6 years back, Bonnie Raitt's show at Red Rocks -- for the first time -- featured reserve seats down front. With most acts in the past, including hers, the first 20 rows was Gen Admission -- and the rabid fans (why are you looking at me?) would line up at 8-9am on the east stairs for the dash into the front rows as doors opened at ~6pm. Long haul but that's the cost of the first few rows at the Rocks. This always guaranteed that the core audience really wanted that artist, that show and we (yes, '78 til, say, 3-4 years ago) made sure every artist we saw (GD, ABB, Dylan, Raitt, etc) knew we were in support.

Fast forward to the first year that Bonnie made reserved seats out of the first 20 rows. We assumed it was a sop to an aging fan base. (I manned the stairs from my earliest 20s to my latest 50s before slacking off.) But with reserved seats, a lot of newcomers were really enamored of their oh-so-tiny territory and everyone remained seated. Bonnie delivered but was clearly mystified by the lack of froth coming from the audience. Oh well, everyone finally decided that it was okay to get up and boogey during the encore and Bonnie stayed for a few more tunes. But I was appalled at the lack of audience excitement and involvement in giving the performer something to work with or off of. Same thing once with a Lyle Lovett show -- apparently, it was date night. Lyle's Large (swing) Band hits the stage hot and I jump up and start dancing (in my peculiar way). Some woman behind me yells "Sit Down!" and I look around and I swear I am the only person out of 10,000 on my feet. Oh boy. Later, when it rained, it was "okay" to stand up...

If it's a theater show, I've sometimes sat down. But outdoor arena ala Red Rocks?! Only for the occasional break from the boogeyinig. Thankfully, that was a one-off and Bonnie killed it this past summer. But that sitting down jive can sure kill the vibe.

Same reason I still send my bills through the snail mail, people. That one has just stuck with me though more as a habit than really thinking the world will end; but these are heady times

Daverock - that's really cool you're falling into a Fleetwood Mac-hole. they are a solid pillar in the halls of music. Saw them about 8 or 9 years ago, Iggy got us tickets and while I loved the music at the show, I was astounded how everyone just sat in their seats. I haven't been to a rock show in a looooong time (if ever?) that no one was up and moving. It felt weird. But then again the demographic did sway upward, so I get it on that level. It was still weird. But the music was phenomenal as was the production.

Thanks to all those who recommended "Then Play On" by Fleetwood Mac. ( and apologies to those who are sick of hearing about it). An incredible album - I can't believe I had never heard of it, or seen it recommended anywhere else in all these years. The cover reminds me of those on the early 70's Quicksilver Messenger Service albums a bit. And the first track reminds me of QSM of that period, too - slightly Latin in feel. That track is okay, but the album really picks up after that . Great guitar sound, songs, rhythm. Maybe I should have got one of the boxes featuring it...although I am guessing there is nothing else in their catalogue quite like this one.

Last Dead, to keep it sweet, the second show in Dicks Picks 33. 10/10/76. Also great -I'm tempted to get the vinyl now.

holy crap Vguy, just read your previous post about being accosted by a lunatic in the grocery store with a concealed weapon because you had on........a dead shirt that had a really great message on it. Make Amerika Grateful Again. It's a good message, it's not really making fun, is it? I have seen this shirt and I think it is awesome. In the grocery store, concealed weapon, what the hell is happening to this country? It has all ready started, the republicans and the last person in the white house who shall not be named, are all ready talking about rigged elections. It may be too soon to say it, but is it over for this experiment that is a free republic? I voted, I made sure my 96 yr old mother in law voted (blue) and I have signed up to take people to the poles who can't get there on tuesday. That's all I can do. I won't go out and antagonize crazies who are poll watching or conceal carry to intimidate anyone, but I will do what ever I can to stop this madnesss that is trying to take over this country. You showed great restraint Vguy, when he grabbed you, how did you not remove his hand, did you grab his hand and ask him to let you go? How did you get him to let you go? was it the crowd? cowards Make America Grateful Again, political rant over and apologizes to any and all who I might have offended.
Highest # ever for me with a Dave's 24657 but it's here and will check it out in all its glory today. Peace and vote

Like I said, he wasn't exactly whispering and I'm glad a video of the interaction didn't hit social media should that conversation had gone on longer. The entire event lasted maybe 30 seconds.
I'm not 100% against conceal carrying. I mean, I own a couple of firearms. Would I conceal carry though? No. But I do worry about the mental stability of those that do. Has anyone ever had to reach out to Dead.net about a botched delivery on a Dave's Picks? Mine was marked "delivered, in/at mailbox" on Thursday but was not there and has not popped up in subsequent days either.

If I reach out to Dead.net is there any chance they'll ship me a new copy?

V, I am also a handgun owner, and long time NRA member. If I'm out in public, I almost never carry. I live in a primarily crime free 10 mile area, and have no need to carry such a weapon, but my apartment is a different story. I feel sorry for the sap who breaks through the door at night uninvited. He better be armed to the teeth. Especially if my daughter is over. David Crosby got into some trouble over the years for gun ownership, but he is famous, and a little crazy. I have a lot of respect for guns, and I never used them for harm.......or did I? Dap 44 sure builds up in speed as it plays. Good show.

Guns?

Statistics show you're more likely to shoot a loved one or have it used on you than you actually shooting "the intruder".

(great Gabriel song)

I was shocked to learn (recently) that half the handgun deaths are suicide!

Finally, I always think of the Harry Carey's line from Angel and the Badman.

Was supposed to be a joke or mystery album?

Supposed to be psychedelic album,,,, a quick jab at a few cuts showed maybe,,, maybe a fusion album. But the web pages that came up intrigued me.

Anyone else remember the tv special ‘The H Andrew Williams Kaleidoscope Company’ where Andy went ‘hip’? My limited memory of it has a guest appearance by Simon and Garfunkel.

Dennis obviously has a Blank Space for TS but I’m sure he can Shake It Off otherwise ‘We are never, ever, getting back together.

All in the Family was based on the UK show ‘til death us do part. This is a show which is difficult to watch now with its casual racism and bigotry but did lead The Monkees (Mickey Dolenz) to write ‘Alternate Title’ which was originally called ‘Randy Scouse Git’ after the name used by Alf Garnett in the show for his Liverpool born son in law.

I’d advise everyone to get out and vote to Make America Sensible Again but it’s not going to happen. This, of course, is coming from someone in a country being run by a group of expletive deleted.

A one hour musical special that aired on April 28, 1968 on NBC. Guest stars included: Ray Charles and The Raylettes, Burt Bacharach, Simon and Garfunkel and Mama Cass Elliott. Quite interesting use of the kaleidoscope meaning with appropriate for the time psychedelic backgrounds and some excellent music.

Never saw this and I was a big andy fan. Watched his tv show every week. ah, the cookie eating bear and mr echo.

Regarding Fall '72 Reels, Google Dick Latvala Introduces The Philo Stomp

It will bring you to a David Gans radio broadcast with guest host Dick Latvala on the Grateful Seconds blog where he seems to introduce the term Philo Stomp. Philo Stomp is a whole other conversation totally worthy of exploration.. but back to the point, Dick suggests there is a cache of Bear Reels that seem to not be indexed or included as vault shows but do exist, many of these from Fall 1972.

To quote Latvala from the hijacked Gans radio broadcast:

"I did go into Bear's Secret Stash and I did find a lot of fall '72 shows...."

Check it out. An interesting and pertinent chunk of history.

Americans told not to lick psychedelic toads

Hikers in the US have been warned to “refrain from licking” psychedelic toads. Officials said the Sonoran Desert Toad secretes a potent toxin that can make people sick if they touch the frog or get the poison in their mouths. The substance is sometimes crystalised and smoked as a psychedelic substance, said the New York Times. However, writing on Facebook, the National Park service described the potential risks as “toad-ally terrifying”.

Andy Williams and guns? Can't think how we got here but it did remind me of Andy's love Claudine and a rhyme from a curious incident. Strange days have found us
Strange days have tracked us down
They're going to destroy
Our casual joys
We shall go on playing
Or find a new town

Profound words on The Doors title track to their second album. My company just laid off 25% of IT. My team is now down to two, same headcount when I joined the company almost 10 years ago and we've grown 500% since then from an infrastructure perspective. I thought I was done, but I architected the latest and most complex solutions we have, so might have bought some time.

Unbelievable VGuy - you have such a gregarious personality and being towering in height, not sure what was his major malfunction. Glad you didn't go Gunny Sgt Hartman on the loser: "What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?"

Loving DaP44 - reminiscent of the great shows I got to see from '87 onward...

Still working my way thru the MSG box - Glad they have this era represented but kind of a tough slog for me. Not having Bobby's guitar in the mix was a bit of a shock for the one of the shows on the yearly major release. I'm sure I will enjoy the nuances of Jerry's guitar with more listens.

The San Francisco Chronicle today has a couple of decent articles on the 50th Anniversary of Sweetwater in Mill Valley and its history and upcoming shows and celebrations there. (For any who may not know, Weir is a co-owner of the latest version of this venue).

Search for them on sfchronicle dot com. Sometimes they'll block you and ask you to subscribe, other times they're open to read. Don't ask me why, but I'm not a subscriber and was able to access them this morning.

The best 2 shows I saw there over the years (at the original location) were Jorma and Jack Cassady in their acoustic blues duo - front row chairs - and Dan Hicks and band with his ever witty swing tunes. Good times.

You provide a tantalizing glimpse at what could be.... the discovery of the missing first reel to my first show, 9-19-72, which may still await us in Bear's mystery reels. I have alerted the OSF to look for that 1st reel setlist and get that entire show archived. Naturally, at the time -- a newly minted 15 year old with only GD records for reference -- I couldn't have told you that it was a hot show, only that it went on so freakin' long ("What are these people ON? Ohhh....") But we know with the benefit of hindsight that late August to early November '72 that band was on a streak.

1st guess- 7/27&28/73
2nd- 6/10/73 with po 6/9
3rd- 5/26/73
Last 3, 4? Years, second pick has been 73 or 74. Last year was 74, so…?

WOTF bonus: 9/15 or 17/73. If you count WRS all as one song these are the only 2 shows with 6 songs off the album and their good shows!

Box: summer 73

I suggest placing another order using a different browser, and even a different credit card.

Then tell the first credit card company to cancel payment because the retailer does not have a record or your purchase.

Also, you don’t need to create an account to place an order, you can check out as guest.
