    Earliest memories of music...

My folks had a vintage turntable and a large speaker encased in a piece of furniture my dad nicknamed "Lenin's Tomb." Shoebox shape, they had lamps on it. This is circa 1962. They had some classical albums, but it was the soundtracks to Broadway shows that I liked most, due to the catchy melodies. I remember Camelot among them. Also Herb Alpert. When the Beatles hit around 1964, I was six going on seven and the grocery store had bins at checkout with the first Beatles album. I begged my mom to buy it for me (even though we were taught to not want things - parents grew up in the Depression), $1.98 I seem to recall. At home, I put the sacred record on the turntable and put the volume low (a) to not bother anyone, but (b) also because this was powerful, radical stuff and I felt conspicuous for getting excited over it. Then I'd sit by Lenin's Tomb and quietly rock out.

A year or so later, they started coming out with handheld transistor radios and a Washington's Birthday sale had 'em for like $10. Again, I begged! I would hide it under my pillow when it was bedtime and sit up listening to AM radio stations out of NYC, dominated by Beatles and Stones but also Ray Charles, Temptations, Motown, Aretha -- the works.

By around '71 (now age 13) the Chambers Brothers were playing nearby and I got my mom to drive me to the show with two friends and pick us up afterwards. The Brothers played "Time" and other hits and I was hooked on live music. I later found out that Duane and the ABB had played there around the same time, but they were not on AM radio and I had yet to delve seriously. (Opportunity lost, like missing 6-10-73!)

Although, my entree to the blues (my real home) was looking at the credits on Beatles and Rolling Stones albums. I could understand credits like Jagger-Richards or Lennon-McCartney, but "McKinley Morganfield"? "Chester Burnett"?? Well, I figured it out and by age 14 was mixing my purchases between transient pop of the day with Chess records.

The following year, one month after turning 15, I went to my first GD show and, man, it was like some kinda crazy carnival that I marveled at but didn't quite get. Everyone seemed to be in such a strange mood... I knew drugs were involved (older brother) but was yet to be "experienced." (I think spring '73 began my "experienced" years -- hey, that's 50 years ago coming up!) As I've said before, after a couple hours of loud rock 'n roll by the Dead, I was good to go home, but the band kept playing and playing!! Good early training. Eventually, I caught on.

Like most of my posts, perhaps TMI. But it's Sunday morning and the coffee (w/Jameson) is good. Cheers!

    Dylan on The Dead

Excellent article on The Dead in Bob Dylan's recent book "The Philosophy of Modern Song". It's nominally about "Truckin'" but it also touches on why the Dead were a dance band rather than a rock band, and touches on the players various styles. If you want to know how different women looked from the stage when playing with The Stones and The Dead, he tells you that, too. He may not tell you anything you don't already know, but I have rarely seen it put so well.

Regarding the actual song, "The guy singing the song acts and talks like who he is, and not the way others would want him to talk and act." Way to go.

MR ONES - yes, both Live+ and Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop are top drawer. I think it was the way he played that was so magical, irrespective of the song or musical form he chose to unleash it in.

Deadfeati - that is quite something, seeing Gene Krupa live. I wouldn't think there are many around now who could lay claim to that.

    Jeff Beck/Music is Life

Fantastic comments from everyone on here. Regarding Jef Beck, I always favored the trio of albums beginning with Blow By Blow thru Live with Jan Hammer Group. Of course, there are many, many more excellent releases, Who Else, mentioned by DAVEROCK, Live +, and Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop to name just 3. As far as songs, I HAVE to put in a good word for ‘Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers, a killer cover of a great Stevie Wonder song, Led Boots, Diamond Dust and Big Block. Too many really, to choose just a handful.
This will probably come as no surprise to anyone when I talk about how much I love music and what it means to me. I guess the shortest way to put it, is that life before the Beatles was black & white. After the Beatles, my life went full technicolor, without doubt.
I can get goose bumps just from a well placed chord, a vocal harmony, or a well written lyric.
I don’t believe life for me, would be worth living without music. I feel blessed.

    Gene Krupa and 1/5/79

I'm always a little late here, but here goes...

I saw Gene Krupa when I was about eleven years old. Was with my family on one of our trips to the New York's World Fair. We were walking around at night and stumbled upon Krupa playing at the Metropole Cafe. Stood in the doorway and watched him pound it out. All I can say is wow - one of my all time favorite musical memories...

1/5/79 - The Spectrum - I remember that a good time was had by all and it snowed - only audience tapes of the show as far as I know

Last five-ish - The Dead - Closing of Winterland - What a fine performance and excellent recording!
    Still listening to Dave's 43 and 44
Working my way thru In and Out of the Garden -
Non Dead - The Kinks - On the Road
    Hendrix - Groovy Children
Africa 2 - A compilation that came highly recommended, but was somewhat redundant for my tastes -
    good dance grooves though
    Melissa Aldana - 12 Stars
Tom Petty - Live at the Fillmore

Still in a sipping, not chugging listening style...

Be well and enjoy the music!

And of course playing homage to Jeff Beck listening to a variety of his recordings - Always liked Beck-Ola

Your collection probably needs the Fleetwood Mac ‘Worlwide Live’ unofficial Box.
10 CD’s for $40.
8 Fleetwood Mac CD’s ranging from 1968 at the Carousel to 1990, along with a Stevie solo and a Lindsey solo.
Sounds pretty good. The only show that I already had was the 75 show. FM/pre-FM sources.
I figured that for $4/CD I should check it out.

I popped in the giants stadium 7/12, and it gets me every time. The whole first set like HIAB, loser, and TOS. the band was firing on all cylinders, especially Jerry and Brent with that tinkling keyboard is so sweet. Being there for most of the shows makes me bias. Just had to mention it. Back to dap 44. Great show.

Another one. Yikes! It's everywhere now.
And not a mask in sight.
Take it easy PF.
My local friend took a week. His wife like 10 days.
And they were just ready to get their bi-valent (Omicron+Corona).
I went and found the bi-valent (still scarce here) right after that.
Full effect around third week after booster, so about now for me.
But we are still doing masks in crowded stores since we have some COPD.
Best wishes and cheers

I purchased Dave's Picks 44, and it arrived as scheduled. The outer mailing box was punctured, and when I opened it, little pieces of plastic starting falling out. The CD case was broken. When I opened that, I discovered that CD3 was chipped and cracked. Today I listened to CD1 and discovered that it was defective. Tennessee Jed > Promised Land does not play. Anyone else have this problem? I have not listened to CD2 yet. I contacted customer service, and I learned that there were no replacement CDs available. Defective merchandise can be returned for a full refund. I am hoping that someone would be willing to email me digital copies of those songs that I am missing so that I can at least have the complete show. As I said, songs 1-7 on CD1 are fine. Songs 8>9 are defective. I haven't tried playing CD2, and CD3 is no good at all. Can somebody please help me out? Thank you!

In case you haven't sent a PM before: To send a PM, if you are logged in, on the upper right of the screen are your account options, cleck here, select messages and you can probably figure out how to send a PM from here. either that or fumble through customer service. They can probably pull something better than a refund off..??

Edit: Ooops.... Proudfoot beat me to this by a couple hours. I didn't see his response before I replied. Apparently, he and his dog have been eating mushroom chocolates all day and have developed super human powers as evident by their lightening fast and accurate response.

I'm pretty certain that Sarge was very happy to have had you around with him for 14 special years. You took good care of him and now he has an opportunity to rest. You provided space in this world for him and that is a special love that was returned.

Stay strong and stay positive.

Carlo - Sorry to hear you had to put to sleep your beloved dog companion Sarge. Such a tough loss.

Putting down a faithful companion may be the hardest thing you'll ever do in this life. This from an animal person who put down his 20-yr-old cat earlier this year. The day-to-day intimate and often subconscious connection is nearly unbreakable. And yet... mercy requires courage and acceptance. This will be hard in the days ahead. I survived by focusing on the blessing and cosmic luck of the years together and the realization, which does not come easy, that "there's nothing you can hold for very long," thanks Robert Hunter.

You did good for fourteen years and your departed buddy would wish you peace. As do we.

Condolences Carlo. So sorry Sarge's glorious 14 year run with you had to end. How lucky you both have been! As hard as it is to put down our four-legged companions when the time comes, they count on us to do the right thing to the very end. My 12 year old brindle Mastiff mix Annie is recovering from knee surgery, and I know her day will come sooner than later. I'll shed tears, but know she's counting on me. It's sad that dogs' and cats' lives are so much shorter than ours, but they sure do pack a lot into their time with us. Onward

I have had pets (dogs & cats) since 1965. It occurred to me years ago, that when I sign up to take a new animal (I call them my children, as I have no human children), we are implicitly signing up for an unknown time period of joy, and also, some days of grief & sadness. To me, this is still a good deal, but it makes the heartbreak no less painful or intense. I don't ever want to live without the unconditional love of a cat or dog, so I go in knowing the deal. I believe my life is always better with the love of a quadruped.

So, to Carlo, VGUY and everyone else who has lost a "child" recently, you have my total empathy and sympathy.
Carlo, as long as you remember Sarge, he's never really totally gone.
My 2 are 13 (redhead) and 7 (tuxedo) so 1 may go soon or not, but one piece of advice that was given to me was: "always allow 6 months to grieve before getting a new one".
By the way, I have not always taken this advice, but it does make sense to me.
