Some faiths believe humans can get reincarnated as animals - so if you eat an animal, according to them, there is a possibility that you could actually be eating your mother. It your mother has died, that is.

Not that I was thinking about that this morning - I was just joking around with how people - me for one - have often observed that heroin isn't as risky as most people believe it is - so I was substituting shepherds pie for heroin in my earlier post. Leddeds post on the human riff surviving so long through having access to the good stuff reminded me of this way of looking at things.

The Floyd just uploaded over 15 Dark Side Tour shows to stream/download for free. Not sure about download. Something they have done previously, and the shows are only up there for a limited time.

Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when it comes to recent poets, I am a big fan of Peter Balakian, especially “No Sign” and “Ozone Journal”. I stumbled on them when I was at Colgate, where he teaches, with my daughter who was deciding on colleges. She decided to go elsewhere, so finding them was the silver lining.

This "streaming release" of 18 1972 Floyd shows is similar to what they did last year. Audience recordings of previously available shows. Sadly, the Floyd didn't record a lot of their shows. I have these streaming releases, if anybody needs/wants, but caveat emptor!!!

We were huge Floyd fans before we became major deadheads. First Floyd show: March 14, 1973, at the Boston Music Hall. Awesome stuff, especially Axe and Echoes...........

Ghost Town by The Specials was a number 1. single in Britain in summer 1981, at the same time riots were breaking out in several major cities - including my old stamping ground, Manchester. One of those great examples where a record seems to mirror what is happening in society at the time of it's release. What was happening wasn't great, but that record reflecting it was.

watched this yesterday VGuy! I usually put on an HD/YouTube fireplace on the TV when I'm working at home (to save actual firewood but adding needed ambiance) so this was an added bonus to get some top shelf GD spinning to the fire.

Fellow Floydian here and I read that about those 18 shows being released streaming, but just for a short time. You got them all? I have several Pink Floyd boots and there isn't a one that has good sound or recording. In fact, most sound like they were recorded on a cassette recorder in someone's pocket. How do these sound? Any of them respectable enough to listen to, other than a historical record? 73 was the first time I saw them also, that was a great tour, DSOTM, Echos and One of these days as an encore...wow so good. It was May I believe when I caught them in Tampa at the stadium. There is lack of good Floyd recordings so if any of these sound any good, I would be interested.

It always seems a bit harder to take when Pink Floyd recordings sound a bit rough. Their records in the 70's were ones you would play to get full advantage of modern stereoscopic sound ( or whatever) - so an audience sourced bootleg seems a bit harder to take than one by a more raucous band.

Headline of the day - "Ambulance strikes : Don't get so drunk you need A&E NHS boss warns." There's always someone trying to take the fun out of the traditional British Christmas. They'll be telling us we can't attack each other on New Years Eve next.

Winter, starts here in the Bay Area in about 20 minutes, 1:48 pm to be exact. The Dead played lots of great shows in the Winter, maybe the greatest season ever for the Dead. Classics, like 2/14/68, 2/27 & 28/69, 3/1 & 2/69, 2/13 & 14 /70, 12/26 & 28/79, just to name a few. Winter could certainly make a strong case for being the Dead's greatest season.

I have not been able to locate the Floyd shows that dropped this week. Does anybody know which streaming services are they are on? I looked on Nugs.net and Spotify but I couldn't find them. Full disclosure, I do not have active accounts with either service so that may be why I can't see the full catalogue?

A really good Pink Floyd bootleg (both recording-wise and musically) is called Animal Instincts. It is a complete show from 5-9-77 in Oakland. I found it on eBay and likely there are still copies on there.

Winter 69 Spring 72 & 77 &90 summer 71 fall 73& 89. I think you can find good shows any weather it is and any clothes you wear. Maybe it could be a topic for the next boxset. in the early years maybe they play Chicago theatre 4 times a year (71)?

Clear skies? Meteors tonight. What do you do when the power goes out for days? Play live Dead of course. When heavy wet snow started up last Friday here in Vermont, no one guessed that more than 100,000 people would lose power that night. Friday night concert postponed. Saturday morning close to a foot of snow like wet concrete, trees bent over, branches broken, much damage. Phone lines went down too, no internet. That night, tablet to blue tooth speaker: November 14th, 1978 Boston Music Hall, add acoustic guitar. Kept the wood fired victrola well stoked. Power came back Sunday night, felt pretty special. Tomorrow night forecast for this storm affecting so many of us: starting as snow, changing to rain, up to two inches meaning flood watches, high winds before it turns back to snow and the temperatures plummet to single digits. More power outages predicted. Two inches of rain on top of a foot of icy snow, that's nasty. Fill the water jugs, charge the batteries, sand buckets ready. More Live Dead Please and Thanks. Funny, I randomly picked PNE 74 from the PNW Box this morning skiing. The only 74 show from this box without a Weather Report suite. This box keeps growing on me. The sound is great, the performances, far from routine.. they really mix it up for the most part and the jams are distinct, creative and original. I think I'll pick up Portland or Seattle tomorrow, the warm and rainy day. Then the temperature goes off a cliff and winter returns with a vengeance, by Friday night it drops below zero (-21F with wind chill) and colder in the high country. It stays arctic cold until next weekend. Alberta Clipper, Polar Vortex oh my.

Good morning, psychedelic rockers!!

So far, I have "sound checked" about 2/3 of those "newly released" (lol) 1972 Floyd shows. Most are what you'd expect from the audience taping technology commonly available at that time. Which means, varies from maybe passable to truly wretched. However, there are exceptions........

The Hollwood Bowl show recording is actually very good for that era.

The first show released, Southampton, this sounds like either an unbelievably good audience recording, or maybe---BIG maybe---a high generation soundboard recording. Either way, sounds very different and better quality than the others.

I do have them all, as well as tons of other Floyd. Anybody interested, please PM me directly.

Fair warning----I am having some serious issues with the transfer service I use, so until that's figured out, speading these things around may be delayed a while...........

I have returned from the future and I have it on telepathic authority that the next GD special release will be "Box of Rain: The Foul Weather Shows." Dave has gone back through the archives, cross-referenced with National Weather Service reports and tour diaries to find the stormiest shows available. This will of course include the first-ever release of the Woodstock performance (with that wonderful incomprehensible rap from that still unidentified rando babbling about the "third coast") as well several lesser known but certifiably soggy unreleased shows.

Speaking of which ... recently came across "New Years Eve 1973" by the ABB, a three disc thingy that floated down the Bezos to my doorstep for a mere 22 bones. The Brothers are in fine form (seriously, did they ever play a bad gig?), and Garcia guests all over the third disc encore, trading licks with Dicky Betts and Boz Scaggs. Audio quality varies over the course of the show, gets pretty ragged around midnight probably because of the firework BOOMs going off but is generally pretty darn OK, evidently sourced from a broadcast. Weird that the Dead did not play a '73/'74 new year's gig, but Jerry got out there and jammed anyway.

Also of potential interest on the ABB front: the ABB has issued the Syria Mosque show from January 1971, long available as a barely listenable (at least in the copies I heard) bootleg. The "official" CD is better, but not that much better, which is a shame because the performance is amazing. On balance, "Syria Mosque" is probably only for us nutjobs who have to have every last note Duane Allman played. You know who you are.

The reason humans are living longer (though not in the barbaric US) is that, as toolmakers, we put a barrier between us and the environment, while wildlife, for sure, may nest and den, but otherwise they're out "there" and that makes for greater mortality. But it's vguy's tenderness in caring for others that I dig. And only 54?? (Spring chicken...)

As for stormiest shows, I cannot recall the date(s), but more than one Red Rocks GD show was played in the pouring rain. I was pretty close and no one in front of me left. Behind me, all I saw was a multicolored collection of ponchos. (Ha! Deadhead story: I have two raincoats with me at the Rocks and it begins to pour. I grant a stranger one of them, which matched with rain pants. I.e., my valuable backcountry ensemble. After the show he walks away with the jacket. Two years later, same scenario and I see the guy wearing my jacket. So I said, 'Hey, I want that back.' He says 'Let me use it during the show.' I said 'Okay.' After the show he disappears again, forever this time. Today I recall the loss of gear, but do not want to let it make me less willing to help a fellow DH. Perhaps a faint echo of vguy's compassionate stance towards other creatures. But I'm still a little pissed!)

Okay, by now, Dave L. has made his 2023 box decision. Mr. Norman is reviewing the tapes for anomalies and the artist is offering sketches of his/her/their approach. But will it be a box I can pass on or will it be a monster '73 pkg that recalls my first big, year-long outing (at least June to October)?? And when during the year will they drop the Wake of the Flood reissue? Early on, with the box later??

Since it’s supposed to be the season: just would like to echo the kindness/compassionate sentiment.
As the world seems to be swirling down the proverbial shiter, kindness and compassion seem more important than ever! It’s the one thing every human can do, no matter what your situation or who you are.
No matter how tough it might be for you, there’s always someone who has it worse, so even just the smallest gesture of caring can make giant difference in someone else’s journey. Just a little smile, to the right person, at the right time, could change someone’s life! It’s that simple!

Think of how how vguy delt with that angry wing nut. Not so much the interaction itself, but hopefully perhaps the impression it made on those there that witnessed it. Maybe next time it’ll be one of them and in their subconscious they’ll now posses that ability to turn the other cheek, to let it go, to perhaps even have compassion for that guy who probably thinks he means well…forgive them as they know not what they done. Perhaps it’s all a test?
All I know is as things appear to get more dire, the more I can try to feel kindness, especially in situations where it wouldn’t normally be the case, the better I feel. It’s like wining some kind of personal lottery to be kind, especially if the person “doesn’t deserve it”.
When I was a doorman, one of the bellmen had this thing where if he checked someone in and they didn’t tip, or were cheap, instead of getting mad like the rest of us might do, and even go out of our way to not give them good service etc, this guy would spend the entire time the guest was with us trying to be even extra helpful and kind. Often, by the time the cheapskate left us, he’d actually end up tipping this bellmen better than if he’d just give the usual upon check in. It was cool to watch this guy take such a negative, and turn it into a positive, even if it didn’t pan out in tips.
Like, the more folks are dicks, the more I’m going to be kind!

So cue up Ryan Adams song Kindness, and think of at least one way you can make a difference in someone’s life today.
Tamp down all the noise, especially at this time of year, open up that GD hippie sonar, and shed some positive light and kindness out there. I mean what else is there?

That’s one of my favorite things about this dnet place. Oh sure we squabble and bitch about this and that, mostly nothing, but like family, we’re usually pretty cool to each other.
So sorta like Mickey said, take these feelings, and put them out into the world and do some good.

Floyd may have been another pioneering band in high quality concert sound, but they apparently weren’t smart enough to record everything.
On the other hand, everything probably isn’t needed since they played basically identically night after night (which I read before was because the music had to match the visuals).
I recall several years ago when I was trying to differentiate back to back nights of DSOTM, the difference was that in one of the recordings you could hear someone kick a glass bottle across the floor near the microphone.

That was my impression of Pink Floyd, that from DSOM onwards they basically played sets that were quite formalised, with no improvisation and no chances taken. They were the only band from that era that I saw, who played complete albums from beginning to end in concert. I only saw them twice, though. The first one, at Knebworth in 1975 was a bit more unpredictable. They played two sets - the first of which consisted of unrecorded songs that would later appear on "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals". In 1977 when I saw them they played the whole of "Animals" followed by the whole of "Wish You Were Here", with "Money" as the encore. I never felt like seeing them again after this one.
In some ways they were at the opposite end of the psychedelic spectrum to The Dead. They were a bit wilder earlier on, before I clambered on board.

....I will be honest, if he wasn't obviously packing, the interaction may have been a little different. Small man with a gun to make him seem bigger. I could've taken him easy but there were phones coming out as well. Best to just walk away. I don't want to be "trending" on social media.

Sad week at Casa Nappy...Señora Nappy and I had to say goodbye to our sweet little fur baby, Violet, this past Monday....she had been bravely dealing with a small cell feline lymphona the past year...the Mrs was her nursing saint, giving her the daily med doses that kept her going well the past year... a couple of weeks ago though there was a sharp drop off in her health and energy and last Friday we made the decision that it was time...Mr Jinks has been moping around Meowing loudly looking for his sister...we got them both 13 years ago...how such a small creature can leave such a huge hole in a household is amazing...I asked our Vet about how we should handle any issues Jinks may have and she told us just give him the attention he'll be needing...

Also I have read how folks here have dealt with their fur family members illnesses and I want to ask if any of you carry pet insurance...we go through a company called Spot...we paid about $50 a month for each animal....it covers annual wellness checks, meds etc...we get about 80% of the Vet costs back which is quite a savings....

All of you Northerners here please stay safe during these Artic Weather Bombs...I saw today that the Buffalo area was expecting a ton of snow near zero temps and 40 mph winds to boot!

....Vguy is trending towards We Three Kings, Silent Night and Tell It To The Mountain. The trifecta in my opinion.

I would guess it was, as Bobby said, "The Annual Red Rocks Rain Out" .... gushed all three days in July of '82, but the music was wonderful (IMO).... as I recall, before TLEO?, he says something to the effect "we want to thank the weather for not raining on us any more" and something else about going up "in a shower of sparks" .... in spite of it, managed a pretty doggone decent set of audience tapes (mics/equipment under huge blue tarps), which I still have and to which I still listen. The crowd response to Rider's "I'd shine my light through the cool Colorado rain" was a seminal moment for all....
