...this show was off the hook from the very get go. The Casey Jones is the best I've heard... beginning a jam that goes through each member going off on an instrumental solo. The end has them jamming so hard you can no longer hear them singing through it. Now you know you're in trouble (The Good Kind) when a show starts like that... Weirtheir on 10/2/77, Dead.net

Holy hell, the 10/2/77 Betty Board sounds incredible... I just wanted to pay homage to this unreleased gem, which features the lovely, tight playing you'd expect of a 77 show with some of the highest audio quality I've ever heard ... What a treat. u/monsteroftheweek13 on 10/2/77, Reddit

We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson (with a boost from Bob Menke, more about that in David's video) and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.

*2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

1st Show - Weather Report was a great fusion jazz band, one of the best. Impressive and world class musicians - I mean, Zawinul and Shorter alone were incredible, but also Jaco, etc - and a great library. For those who want to check them out, I highly recommend the 4 CD release “Forecast: Tomorrow”. By the way, Zawinul had some good solo releases, and I highly recommend his first one.

Everyone talking here about Herbie Hancock, I have his Columbia box set - 34 discs - that I have to pull out and spin some music. Gold.

A shout out to Col- Oro - ado! Long time no hear, Amigo. How are things in the hills of Colorado?

Just played Weather Report's self-titled first album yesterday.
A direct extension of his Miles Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew era with other Miles collaborators Wayne Shorter and Miroslav Vitous too. The very avant-garde early W.R. before their more percussion based later works. Next up their (2nd?) I Sing The Body Electric.

DMCVT you lucky dog. Riviera! Home of the stars. Good read with Riviera in it - The Mysterious Montague, a true tale of Hollywood, golf, and armed robbery by famed sports writer Leigh Montville. My favorite golf book. And Tiger is proof you can change your swing. Totally different and still awesome. Then again, he's had to do this every time he wrecks his body and the work he puts in is staggering.

BC - Missed Herbie's set at Telluride Jazz fest (2006?) but heard Chameleon and Vein Melter in his sound check while getting in a round of disc golf at lunchtime at work that day. The course winds around the stage and up Firecracker Hill and back to Bear Creek Falls. Priceless!

Edit: After seeing That Mike's post above I'd better add Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. (on Columbia) to today's listening list. The 1976 Newport Jazz Festival's "Retrospective of The Music of Herbie Hancock" which the liner notes indicate it's purpose was not so much to pay tribute to one musician, but to enable a group of great musicians to play together. Three different groupings of world class jazz artists including Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Wah Wah Watson, Buster Williams, Ray Parker Jr. and more. Thanks guys, I forgot I had this 2-LP.

    Cheers all

That is one sweet 60s soundtrack. really nice Sunday morning listen. vaguely familiar with the film from many years ago because based on a Julio Cortazar story but did not realize Herbie Hancock did the score, with some Page/Beck Yardbirds thrown in to boot. Wish I could hear some of those themes jammed out 4, 5, 10 minutes. Bring Down The Birds reminded me of Modereko. There's a nice BDTB cover by Funkallisto. And nextthing I know I got served up Chameleon. Need to revisit the Jimmy Carter sketches from SNL.

Jerry’s incredible talent as an artist was captured in book form before, but that publication - Jerry Garcia: The Collected Artwork - went out of print. Good news, it is being re-issued (re-published?), and I’ll definitely grab a copy this time. Such an amazing and inquisitive mind, and quite an accomplished artist. There are a number of truly excellent and exceptional artists in Music, Joni Mitchell, Bowie, Ron Wood, Dylan, etc, among them. The book looks to be reissued in April, as well as a pending Dylan art book for a decent price, as his “regularly” issued art books, through a London publisher, are out of this world expensive.

Mr Ones - Cannonball is always a great choice - may I recommend the (fake) live album “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”, which prominently featured the great Joe Zawinul, the machine behind Weather Report? A classic album.

Years ago we had softball and bowling teams at a previous job I had, girls and guys, and it was an absolute blast. It was really the best way to socialize as friends. The only thing that ruins these things is the person who forgets these are for fun, and they line up at bowling boasting they are “Lane Gretzky” at bowling, and never bowl less than 300. Yea, sure. Baseball, same thing.

As for Jimmy Carter, I have no opinion on him as a politician because I am not an American, but he certainly is a decent and charitable human being, and I think that alone is a life’s accomplishment. I once worked on a Habitat project, and I get why he and his wife embraced that initiative.

1stShow, I caught that Estimated fade to commercial as well, and was just slightly surprised, they look for California song hooks as the west coast swing draws to a close. Tiger Woods silly prank forgottten, that approach he hit into the first green to make eagle was spectacular. Riviera is special place, fortunate to play the course many years ago with basketball star Lynn Shackelford who was a member. Lynn's son Geoff, golf historian was the avenue but could not play that day due to injury. Fred Couples was out on the course just ahead of us, unforgettable visit. And yes indeed, after multiple runs, 10/1 really does seem to have a bit too much mid bass emphasis on my system. 10/2 not so much. Grinning and bearing with it. Both these shows seem like near effortless cruising in top gear, the band's in fine shape.

Only Dave's picks I've seen last a week, which is a bit of a shock to be honest. I've gotten them all from 30 on and this is probably my most anticipated show to be released. No doubt there have been some good ones since then but I thought this one would be gone quickly

Groucho - I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.

RT Vol. 1 No. 1, 1979 - Interesting sound on this. Very dynamic and heavy on the midrange? Vocals not so much. Brent's electric piano (synth?) so bright and loud it hurts. Phil sounds good though.

Glad to hear that folks are getting their Dave's Picks 45 in the mail. I got a shipping notification 5 days ago, but if I click on the tracking number USPS still says they are waiting for the package. This has happened before and I've come home and found the package waiting for me, so who knows.

Thanks to all who've weighed in on why this Pick isn't sold out. Anecdotally I've often found that people wax lyrical about Spring '77 but don't seem to have the same affinity for Fall, so maybe that's a factor. IDK. I just know that I was enjoying the heck out of Dave's Vol 25 yesterday. Pulling out 23 today just to listen to it while it's still January...

Istshow - great quote by Groucho Marx. Filched by The Cramps for the opening line of their classic " No Club Lone Wolf".

Paste that tracking number into the UPS system.
Mine tracked all the way with UPS until it was handed off to USPS.
At that point the USPS system tracked it until it was put in my mailbox today.

Started with 10-2 set 2 since I had a pretty good cassette copy of that show and know it well.

Sounds grate!
And waaaaaay better than the opera.

And wow small world- I was also figuring I'd start with 10/2, and for the same reason. Cheers

UPS tells me "A delivery date will be provided as soon as possible", the same message since 1/25/23. USPS just says Status not available. If I hadn't had three prior bouts with Dave's Picks being lost in transit and taking months to get resolved, I'd be less anxious about it. Not too encouraged seeing the shipping address is missing my apartment number, which my billing info definitely has as it's listed twice on the order status page at deadnet. Oh well, plenty of Dead to listen to...

Last five as best as I can recall:
GOGD 5/17/77 and 5/15/77
Jazz is Dead 4/14/99
Peter Gabriel Secret World Live I suppose watching a concert film counts
And GOGD DaP 45 Listening Party followed by my own Listening Party to 9/9/72 The Other One, which was a relisten as I listened to it when it was announced, curious at a 34 min Other One a week after the 9/3/72 Folsom one that is filler on DiP 36 9/21/72. It more than delivered, but this time I let the Stella Blue play, and I normally don't care much for '72 Stellas, as they just haven't yet found it, and it's almost exactly perfect in '73; but this one was fantastic. Phil is all over it. Far better than the one 2 weeks before on DaP 24 8/25/72 where Jerry is still searching for the vocal and the guitar voicing (another 30+ Other One on that one, too), but I also believe Jerry was completely wasted at that point. But anyway, I know some like to go in with virgin listens to the Normanized, I just get excited and want to hear some of the highlights of what I will hear in better quality. I also listened to Bird Song and Playing on this venture on 9/9. Saving the rest for May, I suppose.

Hope to hear more good things about DaP 45. I liked the Listening Party, except Jack Straw. Way too fast a tempo. Doesn't need to be funereal slow like Dead & Co, but I like a good loping pace to Jack Straw that builds to a fiery peak, not the double time, frenzied pace of this one. DaP 25 11/6/77 shows how by the end of the tour, they learned how to burn the place down with Jack Straw and keep it about the same tempo, just throw in more and more of the power chords.

I always thought "Passenger" had a Stonesy type swagger, and I notice that's played on the first night of this set. They did seem more heavy rock to me in the second half of 1977 compared to the first.

This just popped up. Dave's 23 on 5 LPs.
I always buy the vinyl but I just listened to this and it is good but...
I better decide fast only 5000 copies.
That's what I thought about Light Into Ashes.
And I think it is still available. (Yes, and it was a 7200 copy release)
Could justify Dave's 1 on vinyl because I don't have the CD.
I'm waffling. Where is Dennis' wife's credit card?
Cheers

So I guess the Dave's Vinyl model isn't doing them all in numerical order starting with No.1. More of a pick and choose by them.

$13.59 it is! Where is my wife's credit card?

Well that was unexpected. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a release to me on the back of Daves 45, featuring shows played only two months before it. I played the cds last month and while I do think it's a great show - both sets - I can't remember thinking there was anything wrong with the sound quality that could be improved by listening to it on vinyl.
I guess buying it would be insurance if the cds become unplayable in a few years, as some of them seem to have become..but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Ordered. Sorry 1st but that sucking sound was my wife's card being spanked to death. I would have asked her permission but she's been on a conference call. If I wait it may sell out!!!

45 is close, but Dallas is shut down for the second day since we got a 1/2 inch of snow!!! Post Office didn't even come yesterday. Looked like snow, but I guess it isn't,,,, right? Rain, hail, sleet or snow, must have be something else :-)

None of my GD CDs have what has been discussed here as "disc rot".
Most of them have never been played (or stored) in the car.
Just lucky? They have been in the dry high desert W. Colo. environment.
Hard to say. Maybe just bad pressings (are CDs pressings?) or production issues for the rotten ones?
Cheers

Edit: Thanks Dennis, I'm good. Gonna pass I'm afraid. Your DFW area looks like they drivin' in the funny papers (to quote Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy) on that ice. Just one after another piling up. Got a CO buddy who is in Ft.W and he always remarks at the lack of bad weather driving skills down there. No practice I guess! And likely no snow tires either.

Edit 2: Oro is famous! He is cited in Community Bits in the Feb. GD Bulletin currently in my inbox. Way to go Oro! And they mention it is Dave L's anniv. of 1st day working for the GD. PIc of him in his bold ski outfit and some cool looking rockered skis with bolts on them. Seen lots of different GD skis but don't know who made that newer model. Anybody know? The pic with his cat is cool too. Big ole long hair. Of course it's a longhair! Dang hippies, get off my lawn!

Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm very pleased that it contains both shows. Wasn't expecting them to both be complete shows. Thank you Dave.

The 10/2 post-drums section is one of my favorites of all time. Especially Wheel>Truckin>Other One - the transitions are exceptional. Yes, The Other One is brief, but that whole trifecta with the transitions is picture perfect. I can't wait to listen to it.

I have not been lurking here at all in recent months. I hope everyone is in good health and enjoying 2023 so far. Stay warm this weekend!

8-21-72 B.C.T. on GD Hour rerun this week. 1st of 4 that encompass the entire show. Interesting that David Gans can do complete shows just not all in one sitting. As I recall his earlier shows could not do whole sets either.

Hi all, I hope the crew is doing well. I got my copy yesterday and after hard jiu jitsu training session, I came home and gave it a listen. I got through CDs 1 and 2 which is the 10/1 show. As expected very much a classic 77 show. I really love that we are getting more of the fall of 77 being released simply because those shows still have 1977 Grateful Dead feel and flow (obviously), but they do differ (at least to my ears) from April and May of that year. Right now I am listening to 10/2 and I have to say there is quite the exceptional Casey Jones opener... In any case, 1977 is the year that keeps on giving.

Random things:
I have recently discovered Jethro Tull beyond the one commonly played song Aqualung that circulates through the local radio stations. Needless to say I am jumping head first down that rabbit hole.

Oro got the shoutout in the monthly Grateful Dead bulletin in the Community Bits section. Very cool!

I believe that today is the anniversary of Dave L coming on board with the Grateful Dead. All I can say to that is what I always do: Thank You Dave for everything! And when you can , how about a 1985 release pretty please?

Thanks Dave for the Portland Oregon consideration, also for Pick #44 in Eugene!

Picked up at the PO yesterday, previewed a few last night. Audio quality preliminary (*after auds) seems excellent. Busy with prep for the bitter cold weekend, will keep warm with this full listen soon. Nice to have more October to go with DaP Dekalb and RT 1.2 releases. Reminding folks Dicks 29 has hidden tracks from October 11 show on discs 2 & 5, including a grate Wharf Rat.

My wife's been watching every night for a week.
Drags herself out of bed after the moon sets in bitter cold air.
She's over it now and not very impressed with Greenie.
At best it was a fuzzy blob, as comets are, but color was evasive.
That said she did not set up the little telescope, just 10x binos.
Amazed at her dedication. You go girl!

Tull - Thick As a Brick, easily my favorite, Living In The Past comes in second. For more modern releases Rock Island and Roots And Branches weren't too bad. Oh, and Crest of a Knave was good.

Hey PF, I have a junior in high school, and he just wrote an essay for his English class titled something like "Why the SB 49 call was not as bad as you thought." He makes some great points, including that there was an 80% chance that play call would result in a touchdown. He goes into this "the analytics say" stuff and I'm just like, I don't give an EFF what the analytics say, you got Beast Mode, hand.off.the.ball. Kids and their analytics these days, pfttt

Spinning 45 now, after the first two tunes, it evens out and becomes very pleasant. Mexicali with Jer shredding and the last Dire Wolf in the key of E. A Cassidy then Deal with Jerry again on top of it into a killer Passenger then back to Tennessee. Great first set here with a real pretty Peggy-O. Second set looks great too.
