    Thanks Crow for pointing out the Herbie Hancock stuff. Turned out I have most of the stuff mentioned. Listened to "You'll Know When You Get There". What hit me most on first go round was the quality of the recording.

    Found I did have a chunk of Iron and Wine which included Sheppard's Dog. What hit me on first go round was how the recording did not compare with Herbie. Recording levels too high? Little muddy to my ears. Could be my copy of course.

    Cannonball's Experience in E,,,, I have a live copy off "Live at Pleyid 69",,,, it's only 14 minutes long.

    Mr Ones - I have both those Weather Report live collections, too, and they are incredible. If you want some great reading on WR, Pete Erskine wrote a great bio on the band from the drummer’s seat, especially in their heyday, called “ No Beethoven: Autobiography & Chronicle of Weather Report”, and an even better book came out about a year ago called “Elegant People”. Fascinating read, and a deep dive on their recorded works. A fantastic band I never tire of hearing.
    As for Miles, he made so many great recordings from the Fillmores, and Black Beauty smokes. A stripped down electric live band, Chick is very prominent on this recording. I think Miles is my top jazz pick, his whole career, but I’m endlessly fascinated by his electric bands and recordings.
    I still think how amazing Bill Graham was - genius, really - with some of his billing lineups, mixing different sounds or genres, but Miles Davis & the Dead on the same bill - Wow. Just wow.

    You guys and gals just continue to floor me. I know there’s a lot of non-Dead discussion here but my God. It’s just so fantastic!!
    THATMIKE-I have about 20 Cannonball discs, including the one you so kindly recommended. I generally prefer live stuff-Cannon is SO generous & descriptive with his introductions and banter. I especially like the 66-71 period. Which ties into the one Cannonball album I have not found on cd. Experience in E. I have a 2-disc compilation that has both songs off side 2 of that album, but none with side one, the 20 minute version of Experience in E. Anyone have or seen this on cd?? It comes up because that song (a Zawinul composition of course) is the 3rd track disc 1 of Forecast: Tomorrow. This and 2 other Weather Report compilations are prizes of my WR collection. A 2-disc set called “Live and Rare” (I believe) and a 4-disc set of live stuff from ‘78-‘81, mind blowing stuff!!
    Mwandishi you say?? There was a 3-disc box called The Warner Brothers Years (again, I think that’s the title) that has Fat Albert Rotunda, Mwandishi & Crossings. Also great.
    So what did all that inspire me to play??
    Miles Davis Black Beauty!! Again, truly mind blowing stuff (Chick Corea setting the keys ablaze!!).
    One last thing I want to add, for those of you with the high end stereo/sound systems. My favorite album of the Century (so far) is just chock-a-block full of amazing/interesting/ head spinning things in the stereo spectrum that I would be shocked if most (all??) of you wouldn’t enjoy. It’s not jammy, instrumental, weirdness, but I play this more than once a year. I recently had a co-worker ask me an interesting question:”what one album would you tell EVERYONE you know that they need to hear??” I thought for a bit, and came up with Iron And Wine “The Shepherd’s Dog”, which I have just played another 5 times in the last 3 days. I’m sure it may not be for everyone, but it’s one I brought to a friend’s house 4-5 years ago to show off his mucho-expensive sound gear. Even your wives may love this. So, I stake my (non-existent) reputation on this one. Feedback (good or bad) is welcome.

    After Miles, I’m putting on Herbie’s Sextant album!! You all are the best!! (after music, of course) 😃

    Did Somebody Say 'Mwandishi'?

    No? Well somebody shoulda.

    Herbie Hancock is to me one of the great geniuses of American music. Everything he did is worth a listen, and a lot of it is as Good As It Gets. All the stuff he did with Miles, and all the albums he made for Blue Note are stone classics. But my absolute favorite period from him is the Mwandishi stuff: ie, the period when HH was calling himself Mwandishi and (perhaps not coincidentally) rumored to be consuming mass quantities of LSD). He kept the same band together for a few years (Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart), touring the world and blowing minds, before he finally ran out of money and had to go a more commercial (though still great) direction with Chameleon.

    Official albums include Crossings, Mwandishi, and Sextant, which are quite literally the bridge between the fusion-y free jazz of the late '60 and the straight up funk of Chameleon. There's a few live boots out there that are pretty good, too. (As well as Fat Albert Rotunda, a soul jazz record with mostly the same personnel that's not bad.) If you are the kind of Head who enjoys a good 30 minute Dark Star, you want to check the Mwandishi out sometime.

    I associate Herbie Hancock mostly with the so called second great quintet of Miles Davis. The incredible rhythm section he was a part of with Ron Carter and Tony Williams." ESP" and "Miles Smiles" are the stand out ones for me. I also like the solo albums he made with Ron Carter and Tony Williams - "Maiden Voyage" and " Empyrean Isles". A few years since I have played those two, mind.
    "Blow Up" is great film - I never associated it with Herbie Hancock, though. More a picture Of London just as psychedelia was emerging. Maybe I should dust that one off n' all.

    Animals 2018 remix on BluRay, listened to the 5.1 surround mix, then the 2018 stereo mix, then the 5.1 again, then changed systems and listened to the 5.1 again, and while reading other people's reactions, I found out about the 2016 5.1 mix of Meddle that was slipped secretly into first runs of the big $550 Early Years Box Set. When they broke it down to individual year boxes, the 1971 box had had the bonus Meddle removed, but some kind soul has pisted it onto the youtubes and a simple search of Pink Floyd Meddle 5.1 will find it, and can play the playlist and have the whole album. It's great, even if a lesser compressed sound quality. But that's beside the main point: this Animals remix is absolutely terrific! Firstly, it's like James Guthrie turned the snare drum on 40 years later, as the drums went from dull to bright and driving. He even added some gated reverb on the drums for specific parts in Sheep and Dogs, and, as much as I hate gated reverb on snare drum, this is incredibly well done. (And probably more like what Peter Gabriel had in mind with the tasteful use of gated reverb, not dominating an entire decade needlessly with that horrid sound on soooooo many songs and albums through the 80s.) The bass sounds incredible, particularly the Pigs part by Gilmour. Guthrie has it sit in the mix in the surround and stereo mixes as a prominent, but not overpowering thing, with full sliding notes that Phil would love hearing, and, like the 5.1 mix of Have a Cigar, some phaser is now evident on the bass, which is more muscular and funkier. The guitar work on Dogs and Pigs is sublime, and sounds far better than it ever has, and I can't understand how David Gilmour would let a petty dispute over liner notes delay the release by four years, delaying by four years people hearing some of his most magnificent guitar work in its full glory. (One also wonders why that 5.1 mix of Meddle was pulled and not released. It was intentionally done after the mix was made.) I made this impulse purchase last night, and it was delivered at 12:30, just 20 bucks. The SACD seems to range for 40-60. Either way, glad I finally gave in and snagged this one, it is astoundingly good.

    Edited to add: glad to hear people breaking out Blow Up. I used to play Bring Down the Birds as a warm up exercise before gigs along with Bob Marley's War and In the Hall of the Mountain King. So groovy, one can see why Dee-Lite and millions of people dug it when they got Bootsy to play it. The movie comes on TCM occasionally. Oh, and I once saw Herbie Hancock opening for Dave Matthews Band. I heard Chameleon start, and I asked one of the 25 people in the crowd who was playing, they said, "Somebody called Bernie Hancock or something." "You mean Herbie Hancock?!" Even at 18, I was sad for the lack of crowd for Herbie. By the end of his set, he had pulled people in from the parking lot in Charlotte and maybe a few thousand were grooving to the legend that began as a pianist for Miles Davis, then became the pioneer of funk and synthesizers. 25 years ago, I was happy I got to see a legend opening for Dave Matthews. Most of that crowd had no clue what they missed.

Only Dave's picks I've seen last a week, which is a bit of a shock to be honest. I've gotten them all from 30 on and this is probably my most anticipated show to be released. No doubt there have been some good ones since then but I thought this one would be gone quickly

RT Vol. 1 No. 1, 1979 - Interesting sound on this. Very dynamic and heavy on the midrange? Vocals not so much. Brent's electric piano (synth?) so bright and loud it hurts. Phil sounds good though.

Glad to hear that folks are getting their Dave's Picks 45 in the mail. I got a shipping notification 5 days ago, but if I click on the tracking number USPS still says they are waiting for the package. This has happened before and I've come home and found the package waiting for me, so who knows.

Thanks to all who've weighed in on why this Pick isn't sold out. Anecdotally I've often found that people wax lyrical about Spring '77 but don't seem to have the same affinity for Fall, so maybe that's a factor. IDK. I just know that I was enjoying the heck out of Dave's Vol 25 yesterday. Pulling out 23 today just to listen to it while it's still January...

When you get your copy, pay attention to the time when the audience tape fades into the soundboard on track 2. :)

Paste that tracking number into the UPS system.
Mine tracked all the way with UPS until it was handed off to USPS.
At that point the USPS system tracked it until it was put in my mailbox today.

Started with 10-2 set 2 since I had a pretty good cassette copy of that show and know it well.

Sounds grate!
And waaaaaay better than the opera.

UPS tells me "A delivery date will be provided as soon as possible", the same message since 1/25/23. USPS just says Status not available. If I hadn't had three prior bouts with Dave's Picks being lost in transit and taking months to get resolved, I'd be less anxious about it. Not too encouraged seeing the shipping address is missing my apartment number, which my billing info definitely has as it's listed twice on the order status page at deadnet. Oh well, plenty of Dead to listen to...

Last five as best as I can recall:

Peter Gabriel Secret World Live I suppose watching a concert film counts
And GOGD DaP 45 Listening Party followed by my own Listening Party to 9/9/72 The Other One, which was a relisten as I listened to it when it was announced, curious at a 34 min Other One a week after the 9/3/72 Folsom one that is filler on DiP 36 9/21/72. It more than delivered, but this time I let the Stella Blue play, and I normally don't care much for '72 Stellas, as they just haven't yet found it, and it's almost exactly perfect in '73; but this one was fantastic. Phil is all over it. Far better than the one 2 weeks before on DaP 24 8/25/72 where Jerry is still searching for the vocal and the guitar voicing (another 30+ Other One on that one, too), but I also believe Jerry was completely wasted at that point. But anyway, I know some like to go in with virgin listens to the Normanized, I just get excited and want to hear some of the highlights of what I will hear in better quality. I also listened to Bird Song and Playing on this venture on 9/9. Saving the rest for May, I suppose.

Hope to hear more good things about DaP 45. I liked the Listening Party, except Jack Straw. Way too fast a tempo. Doesn't need to be funereal slow like Dead & Co, but I like a good loping pace to Jack Straw that builds to a fiery peak, not the double time, frenzied pace of this one. DaP 25 11/6/77 shows how by the end of the tour, they learned how to burn the place down with Jack Straw and keep it about the same tempo, just throw in more and more of the power chords.

I've also had delivery issues in the past.. this was not one of those times. Shipped notification email arrived Jan 25; package showed up today via US Mail (Jan 31). Tracking the package online was useless and seldom updated. Love the liner notes and pictures.. can't wait to spin it.

I always thought "Passenger" had a Stonesy type swagger, and I notice that's played on the first night of this set. They did seem more heavy rock to me in the second half of 1977 compared to the first.

Hi Everybody. For what it's worth, I never received a shipping notification. I just noticed yesterday that USPS was bringing a package to my house, which was delivered with my regular mail. If I didn't look at the USPS Informed Delivery e-mail, I would not have know it was coming.

This just popped up. Dave's 23 on 5 LPs.
I always buy the vinyl but I just listened to this and it is good but...
I better decide fast only 5000 copies.
That's what I thought about Light Into Ashes.
And I think it is still available. (Yes, and it was a 7200 copy release)
Could justify Dave's 1 on vinyl because I don't have the CD.
I'm waffling. Where is Dennis' wife's credit card?

Well that was unexpected. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a release to me on the back of Daves 45, featuring shows played only two months before it. I played the cds last month and while I do think it's a great show - both sets - I can't remember thinking there was anything wrong with the sound quality that could be improved by listening to it on vinyl.
I guess buying it would be insurance if the cds become unplayable in a few years, as some of them seem to have become..but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Ordered. Sorry 1st but that sucking sound was my wife's card being spanked to death. I would have asked her permission but she's been on a conference call. If I wait it may sell out!!!

45 is close, but Dallas is shut down for the second day since we got a 1/2 inch of snow!!! Post Office didn't even come yesterday. Looked like snow, but I guess it isn't,,,, right? Rain, hail, sleet or snow, must have be something else :-)

None of my GD CDs have what has been discussed here as "disc rot".
Most of them have never been played (or stored) in the car.
Just lucky? They have been in the dry high desert W. Colo. environment.
Hard to say. Maybe just bad pressings (are CDs pressings?) or production issues for the rotten ones?

Edit: Thanks Dennis, I'm good. Gonna pass I'm afraid. Your DFW area looks like they drivin' in the funny papers (to quote Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy) on that ice. Just one after another piling up. Got a CO buddy who is in Ft.W and he always remarks at the lack of bad weather driving skills down there. No practice I guess! And likely no snow tires either.

Edit 2: Oro is famous! He is cited in Community Bits in the Feb. GD Bulletin currently in my inbox. Way to go Oro! And they mention it is Dave L's anniv. of 1st day working for the GD. PIc of him in his bold ski outfit and some cool looking rockered skis with bolts on them. Seen lots of different GD skis but don't know who made that newer model. Anybody know? The pic with his cat is cool too. Big ole long hair. Of course it's a longhair! Dang hippies, get off my lawn!

Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm very pleased that it contains both shows. Wasn't expecting them to both be complete shows. Thank you Dave.

The 10/2 post-drums section is one of my favorites of all time. Especially Wheel>Truckin>Other One - the transitions are exceptional. Yes, The Other One is brief, but that whole trifecta with the transitions is picture perfect. I can't wait to listen to it.

I have not been lurking here at all in recent months. I hope everyone is in good health and enjoying 2023 so far. Stay warm this weekend!

Hi all, I hope the crew is doing well. I got my copy yesterday and after hard jiu jitsu training session, I came home and gave it a listen. I got through CDs 1 and 2 which is the 10/1 show. As expected very much a classic 77 show. I really love that we are getting more of the fall of 77 being released simply because those shows still have 1977 Grateful Dead feel and flow (obviously), but they do differ (at least to my ears) from April and May of that year. Right now I am listening to 10/2 and I have to say there is quite the exceptional Casey Jones opener... In any case, 1977 is the year that keeps on giving.

Random things:
I have recently discovered Jethro Tull beyond the one commonly played song Aqualung that circulates through the local radio stations. Needless to say I am jumping head first down that rabbit hole.

Oro got the shoutout in the monthly Grateful Dead bulletin in the Community Bits section. Very cool!

I believe that today is the anniversary of Dave L coming on board with the Grateful Dead. All I can say to that is what I always do: Thank You Dave for everything! And when you can , how about a 1985 release pretty please?

Being from PdxS and alive then (though only 2yrs) makes this release extra special.
Thanks Dave for the Portland Oregon consideration, also for Pick #44 in Eugene!

Picked up at the PO yesterday, previewed a few last night. Audio quality preliminary (*after auds) seems excellent. Busy with prep for the bitter cold weekend, will keep warm with this full listen soon. Nice to have more October to go with DaP Dekalb and RT 1.2 releases. Reminding folks Dicks 29 has hidden tracks from October 11 show on discs 2 & 5, including a grate Wharf Rat.

Is it just me, or is the sound quality not great for the first couple of songs on Disc 1 of Dave's 45? About halfway through TLEO it gets better, but not great to start. Could be my Bose disc player acting up.

The Groundhog popped up this morning, and predicts a quick delivery of DaP 45, rather than a further six weeks waiting on delivery.

PF - only 46 days until Spring - tonight, in my area, they are expecting -30 C/22 F, so I sure hope so.
I will NOT be out with my binoculars in my backyard tonight trying to see The Green Comet (Comet C/2022 E3 on its birth certificate), not seen since Neanderthals roamed the earth. It can wait a night or two.

My wife's been watching every night for a week.
Drags herself out of bed after the moon sets in bitter cold air.
She's over it now and not very impressed with Greenie.
At best it was a fuzzy blob, as comets are, but color was evasive.
That said she did not set up the little telescope, just 10x binos.
Amazed at her dedication. You go girl!

Tull - Thick As a Brick, easily my favorite, Living In The Past comes in second. For more modern releases Rock Island and Roots And Branches weren't too bad. Oh, and Crest of a Knave was good.

Kudos to your Mrs for her dedication. You’re right, though, most of the time - with the exception of Neowise - comet gazing is a dud. Neowise was a rock star.

Have yet to listen to 45, but it did arrive yesterday. Everyone seems pretty pumped so far....

Hey PF, I have a junior in high school, and he just wrote an essay for his English class titled something like "Why the SB 49 call was not as bad as you thought." He makes some great points, including that there was an 80% chance that play call would result in a touchdown. He goes into this "the analytics say" stuff and I'm just like, I don't give an EFF what the analytics say, you got Beast Mode, hand.off.the.ball. Kids and their analytics these days, pfttt

Jethro Tull - Benefit, Stand-up, Storm Watch, Living in the past.
Spinning 45 now, after the first two tunes, it evens out and becomes very pleasant. Mexicali with Jer shredding and the last Dire Wolf in the key of E. A Cassidy then Deal with Jerry again on top of it into a killer Passenger then back to Tennessee. Great first set here with a real pretty Peggy-O. Second set looks great too.
