I'm no historian, but I'm pretty sure in the 11+ years of Dave's, this is the first pick at a time a dozen eggs and a pound of bacon costs 15 freakin' dollars!

One of the rest live rock lp's ever. Used to listen to it on the way back from concerts, after I got the cd, after shows before that, we would get home and put the lp on the player. So fine. Great colors
The original lp was printed on the old capitol label, orange and yellow, reprints are in purple, black and red labels and other colors. The best way to tell if you have an original is to check the song credits for Who do you Love? If it credits Greg Elmore, then it is an original. Reprints credit Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Filmore Audience. Back in 13 this lp came out on HQ remaster vinyl and sounds just like you were sitting in the Filmore. So fine.
This is just a great lp. I have an original purchased in 69 or 70, plus the purple reprint that does not sound as good as the original. The HQ version is the best, hands down. I don't have the other reprints as after the first reprint, it just didn't have the punch as the original and never bought another copy. I also have their first lp, Son's of Mercury which is a 2 disc best of from 68-75. What about Me is another that I own and was turned on to it back in 72 by a California head who said, "this one's good" and I said, "as good as Happy Trails?" silence, like I had spoken blasphemy. Then the look, "like what are you, crazy? " It is a good one too, just not on the level of Happy Trails. i also own lost gold and silver which has a lot of the tunes from Trails, different and also good. The copy I have sounds great, not as good as Trails, but still to me any of that 68-69 Quicksilver is top shelf stuff.

Why hasn't 45 sold out? It's an enigma mystery rapped in a quagmire of lost thoughts and feelings. Who can predict or guess why, it just is.

Daverock, yesterday I posted about a Quicksilver video from 1969, its actually from April 1970. I was corrected by my brother, who said the video comes from a film called "Go Ride The Music". My brother saw Quicksilver play in 1970 at the Frost Ampitheatre. He also said about a video about John Cipollina called Recoil that's really good, has Garcia in it and lots of performances by Cipollina throughout his career.

I definitely have a reprint as it lacks the Greg Elmore credit.
Apparently I did get it at the friends of the library sale.
Usually a dollar but last time they wanted to move stuff so 50 cents.
All the baby boomers are passing and donating media to the library fund.
I need to go to estate sales. Friend found a McIntosh amp for $50. that works.
Nobody knows how to work the old stuff so they think they're broken when all they need is a fuse or a cleaning or the like.

It was even on sale recently, and yet, it didn’t sell out.

Billy - yes, this film came out on dvd a few years ago, twinned with a documentary called "West Pole". Well worth checking out. "Go Ride The Music" also features 7 songs from a highly energised Jefferson Airplane.

I don't think it has anything to do with the year. My guess is, a lot of resellers were still buying quantities for the 2022 subscription, but lost money: looking on ebay, I see vol. 41 through 44(1977, 1974,1969 & 1990) brand new have sold and are still being offered for less that cost.
I think a lot of those resellers did not buy the same quantities for this year, hence 45 not selling out. It will be interesting to see how #46 does(guessing it won't sell out right away either.)
Also, for all the people clamoring for 80s shows, the MSG box has not sold out either.

Did a quick look at eBay and prices are all over the place for the same release.
$20 for a new sealed DaP43 (11/2, 12/26-69) from one person, over $50 from another.
The $20 offer only has a single bid, that being the person who is selling it and set the price.

If 3 CD’s of 1969 won’t sell for $20, that probably gives a pretty good indication of what the resale market is like.
On the other hand, a used copy of 2-24-74 is over $100 with 9 bids, while a new sealed copy of 8-25-72 is $40 with 14 bids.

So, apparently 69 and 72 aren’t as popular out there in the world as some people here would want you to think.

Fortunately for me, I listen to all years (playing 9-18-91 right now).
I’m happy with the choice for DaP 45 and am looking forward to DaP 46,47,48,49,50,51………

Hi everyone, been a while! I'm still really enjoying this release. Fall 77 (and the pacific northwest) always has a cool vibe so i'm in no rush to move on just yet. Also, I think there are few reasons why this hasn't sold out:

1. Dead music has never been more accessible than it is now. Any fan could find a lifetime's worth of shows from just about any era on their phone or laptop and stream them endlessly for $10 a month. Not to mention what's free on the archive...
2. for the ebay folks, there doesn't seem to be a lot of resale value to dave's picks, outside of the first 10-15 releases. is it really worth the effort to spend $40 on a release if you can barely sell it for $50? As far i've seen, most recent releases sell for way less than that on ebay.
3. fatigue: after all these years and all these releases it's hard to get blown away by anything (speaking for myself). I haven't gotten the subscription in years (i don't care about the bonus disc). I just wait for the releases i want and get them the day they come out. i'm guessing there are a lot of people who feel the same.

just one man's opinion of course. this release could be an anomaly and the next few releases could sell out in hours. My guess is that as the years go on, however, longer availability will become the norm.

Left Vermont a couple days ago to escape the last storm and cold, visit an old friend in Maryland, audiophile with a very nice victrola. Thing is, even though there's forsythia and daffodils blooming here, its snowing lightly today by the Chesapeake. We've listened to Dave's 45, he had not heard it yet so it was a hoot to start out on his high end system with the aud bits, as in: "what the hell... ??" Listened through a lot of stuff including Chick Corea's beautifully recorded "Origins-Live at the Blue Note". We went up to Overture, a high end audio shop in Wilmington DE where we saw a set of MacIntosh 901s, dual monoblocks, each the size of a small steamer trunk, around $14k each. So, its great to come back to reality and read about an estate sale discovery at $50.

Yes, and the Listen to the River Box Set is still available as well. Released in 2021. They might have to go back to 10,000 for the box sets. I believe the Giants Stadium box set sold out in less than 2 months.

It makes sense what people - 80's Fan and Cousins particularly, have said on here about why this Daves isn't selling out. I wonder about fatigue setting in with me , too. Releases I would have bought without thinking in the past I am now hesitating over. They aren't cheap, if you live in England, either. Accepting that it's not a Dave's, but just to make the point -Dicks Picks 19 on vinyl, costs about the same s the 12 cd Wattstax Box .

My guess, at $38.00 it’s quite a bit more than the normal Dave’s price. I’ll bet some folks don’t understand that it’s 4-cds, 2 complete concerts. People don’t read ANYTHING thoroughly these days. Short attention spans may go a long way in stretching out the life span of these releases. Or not.

Then 1.5 days in LA to see my son. Cool and then rainy. It felt just like western Washington.
Drive back to PS in pm with rain and glorious white clouds and blue sky and snow on the high elevations.
Next day drive to Salton Sea. Cool yet beautiful.

Unusual occurrences: Venus and Jupiter and Moon, various hikes, Salton Sea. Griffith Observatory and view...awesome.

Dave's 45 cost $54.97 to me. Two shows from a year I'm not so keen on wouldn't be worth it to me at that price. In fact, in some cases a one set Pick would be more tempting than one with 2 sets in it.
They aren't an investment to me. When I die I have no idea what'll happen to them - or anything else for that matter. Go to my brother, I suppose - but he hasn't the faintest idea what a Dave's Picks is. Hopefully he'll get everything valued.

I wasn’t always sure my kid would, VGuy.
When he was young he referred with annoyance to anything I played from the 60s and 70s as my “old man music”.
He was a dubstepper.
Then one day I came home and he was blasting ELO, the Eagles, and Cheap Trick in his room.
On vinyl.
Hope was rekindled.
He only just started digging the Dead (Shakedown Street was the entry point).
So I’m banking that he’ll hop on the bus in time.

It certainly hasn’t been a typical February in Coachella Valley. But being a transplant from Omaha, a little Cold Rain and Snow is quite nice, all in moderation of course. The new hockey team here in the desert almost feels right on days like today. Salton Sea is a great story... wish I could have seen it in its heyday... and hopefully it will get the attention it needs. Anyway, all this weather ought to produce a super bloom in Anza Borrego this year! ....... tcc

I have many a friend that does auto collecting. They have the same stories. Two minutes after their dead, the wife/family is throwing everything out and selling off all the cars ASAP. My one buddy talks about boxes of "parts" bought at auctions and flea markets, maybe a dash from a 52 Caddy, maybe a set of valve covers for a 62 Deville, but all this stuff is in boxes and labeled. Into the dumpster!!

In jest of course. I'll likely be cremated. But I did see the throw it out idea happen at my parents' home when that day came. And I was one of the tossers as the sister who got the house is a hoarder. Surprising how little brown furniture went for at the sale. That was nice stuff BITD. But since there were three of us it sort of went by committee and had to be a unanimous toss or donation.
What few thoughts I have had toward that end is selling it off in chunks as I know my wife doesn't want any of it. Maybe like the desert island question. Which ones will you save 'til the end? Today I'd say the Dick's Picks stay and selected boxes. I've let her know the values so that scenario Dennis mentions won't happen. There's a lot of money sitting there that I'm sure she'll need. And no eBay if I can help it. Is there a thread on here for selling to the faithful? I'll keep you guys informed, LOL.

I think the LA Basin got hammered pretty well ... gorgeous view of the San Gabriels with the snow at very low altitude (appreciated by TV!!) ... a bunch of snow on the Santa Rosas & on San Jacinto out here... will make for Chamber of Commerce postcard photos today. Just a bit of rain and no closing of freeways for us. Did my time in Omaha (which was just fine, but for all that white stuff) where I learned to "watch out where the huskies go ....." As someone here says "And now to your regularly scheduled program" .....tcc

Tough call since some eras sound completely different with different set lists. Take Winterland June 1977 for example. Or Truckin' Up To Buffalo, Crimson, White, and Indigo, plus Giant Stadium show (not a box set, but 3 back-to-back-back shows). It's so hard to compare different Dead eras when the songs and sound change so much. Even within eras its hard to compare because if you take the FW box set, you have 4 shows that are PERFECT sounding. What if we had the Ark in multi-track perfect audio like FW? Or the Boston Tea Party at the end of the Year. Can you imagine having those shows in high quality audio? I think it would change our perception of how "good" certain shows and runs are compared to others.

It's a useless what if, would of could of should of, but my point is, yes there is a point, that there may be runs that are comparable in performance quality from the band that do not measure up because they don't have the tapes. What about Feb 11, 13, 14, 1970. if we never had tapes or Dicks Picks an partial soundboards, and then all the sudden they released those shows in the same multi track perfect audio that FW 69 is in? It would be beyond the pale magical. That's all I'm saying. Is that the Dead have many great runs, but this FW Complete comes from incredible source tapes and from a period when there is relatively little else available.

DaP 45 still not sold out??? What is going on? I think that guy with the flipper theory is on to something. These are great shows. I guess there is a lot of '77 out there too. If the only 1977 available was the couple of shows in Dicks Picks, this one might be sold out by now.

Hey Vguy, I'm really glad you enjoyed the Umphrey's show the other night. I've noticed the hand signaling as well and would love to talk to them about that. Before covid a VIP ticket, which was insanely less than any other VIP ticket, usually came with a meet and greet and they would talk about anything. They even took me backstage one time and showed me a little studio they had set up where they worked out some jams and the cover song for that night. The most regular, nice guys you would want to meet. Jake is a great guitar player. I checked out the setlist and Plunger and 2X2 are two of my favorites!

I would say that, for me, the FW 69 and Europe 72 are the greatest runs- of those released. And the Europe 72 shows are beautifully set up by the Academy of Music shows played that March, part of which I listened to last night. If I play any show from these runs, then I ain't burnt out on the Dead anymore. And if 3/2/69 ever comes out on vinyl, I will buy it without a moments hesitation.
As others have said - the Fillmore East shows from Feb 1970 would make a really great box and would join the two mentioned above in my estimation should they come out.
Or The Ark 1969, come to that.
I can't say I'm as enthusiastic about an anniversary version of Wake of the Flood. Everything on that ( that was played regularly) was so much better played live the same year - so I would only buy it again if it came twinned with a live show. From 1973, preferably - you never know with these 50th releases.

What a show! Any show that starts with Morning Dew, has got to be a knockout , and it is. Pig Pen does a great version of Slim. Harpo's King Bee. Alligator, Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Death Don't Have No Mercy. This show is part of the greatest run of Grateful Dead shows of alltime..

If the Leafs go all the way this year, I’m going to need an oxygen tank. I like that they are being aggressive though, but they have mortgaged their future. Tampa will be tough to get by, but Boston will be monumental. They are THE TEAM to beat this year.
Quick anecdote: My youngest went with his fiancé and some friends to Boston for a Leaf-Bruin game in January, and said he would proudly wear a Leaf jersey. I told him that likely isn’t a good idea, pretty hardcore fans in Boston. He says Nah, there will be a lot of them. Before the game they went to a local pub near the arena for dinner, and he sent me a video clip, showing nothing but wall to wall Bruin jerseys, and a note “You were right”. I wish I could have framed that, because it is one thing I don’t hear often from my kids!

I lived in Boston for a few years, so I know how fanatical those folks can be about their sports teams. The Bruins especially. Which I think is great. However, anyone that willingly supports a team that Marchand plays on can't be fully right in the head.

Just remember, the winner of the President's trophy rarely takes home the Cup.
